I wanted someone to find the men and get them off it before it sank. But then it started to rain. After a few minutes we saw the black outline of our raft moving up and down at the side of the river. We drew up alongside. For a long time we hear and saw a light approaching. “Ahoy there,” I shouted. The light moved and a surprising face looked out. “ Who is it disturbing me at this time of night?” said the captain.
I told the man I had left my family on a sinking steamboat downstream. I said I was the only one who could swim. The man listened. “ This is a dangerous business,” he said. “ We’ve no time to lose.”By now it had stopped raining. The man asked us to follow him on our raft and we all went back to the steamboat. As we got closer I heard nothing. Perhaps the three men were already dead.
