Back home from the Navy, I started school at Greenville College in my hometown of Illinois. I'd been out of high school for four years, but my high school headmaster, Mr. Gardner, invited me to a Valentine's Day dance party at school. The thought of seeing my former teachers was exciting. So I agreed.
When Friday came, I cleaned up, dressed up and drove to the high school gym. I chatted with my teachers and approached Mr. Gardner to thank him before leaving. Just then, the band started playing and a young girl stood up to sing. One look at her and I was crazy?I had never seen such a beautiful girl!
I asked Mr. Gardner who she was, and he answered, “That's Marilyn Riley, Cut Riley's daughter.” I was shocked to say the least. They lived just around the corner from me. I walked across the gym floor to introduce myself, “Hi, I'm Jack Joseph.”
“I know who you are,” was her not?too?friendly response.
“Would you like to dance?” I asked. “No! I'm working,” she shot back.
“Can I call you next week for a movie date?” I asked. “No” was her response.
For the next month I phoned, trying to set up a date. She always had the same answer: No. Then one rainy afternoon in March as I was driving home after basketball practice, I saw Marilyn, walking with no umbrella, no raincoat and no hat. I pulled alongside her and asked if she needed a ride, half expecting her to say no. Instead, she stepped over the roadside and sat down on the seat next to me. It was only a few blocks to her house, but after pulling into her driveway we talked for 45 minutes. It was magic from then on.
Then one rainy afternoon in March as I was driving home after basketball practice,I saw Marilyn, walking with no umbrella,no raincoat and no hat.
1. Why did Jack decide to attend the party?
A.The party was held to welcome him back home.
B.Marilyn would be introduced to him at the party.
C.He could meet some of his former teachers there.
D.They gathered there to celebrate Valentine's
Day.
根据第一段的“The thought of seeing my former teachers was exciting. So I agreed”可以看出,由于在校园舞会上可以见到原来的老师,所以作者决定参加舞会。所以选C项。
2. What was the author's attitude towards the party?
A.Casual. B.Formal.
C.Passive. D.Worried.
根据第二段首句“When Friday came, I cleaned up, dressed up and drove to the high school gym”的描述可以看出,作者对这次舞会的态度是很正式的(formal)。
3. We can infer from the text that__________ .
A.Jack once served in the army after high school
B.it took Jack 45 minutes to drive Marilyn home
C.Jack and Marilyn were familiar with each other
D.it was Marilyn's cold attitude that interested Jack
根据第一段的“Back home from the Navy, I started school at Greenville College in my hometown of Illinois. I'd been out of high school for four years”可以推断,作者在高中毕业后去海军服役4年,退役后就读于家乡的大学。
4. How would the story most probably develop in the end?
A.Marilyn would fall in love with Jack.
B.Jack would make great achievements in college.
C.Marilyn would become a famous singer.
D.Jack would have frequent conflicts with Marilyn.
根据末段最后两句“It was only a few blocks to her house, but after pulling into her driveway we talked for 45 minutes. It was magic from then on”可以看出,作者和这位女孩的关系有很大改善;特别是从最后一句“从那以后(我们之间的关系)很神奇”可以推断出,故事结局与两人的关系有关,而四个选项的叙述之中,只有选项A提及二人关系。

A Yorkshire village in England has created what could be the world's smallest museum. The museum has been created by transforming a disused phone box. The attraction in Warley Town only has enough room for one visitor at a time. Despite the limitations of space, it features etched (风化的) glass, old photographs and a selection of personal items from the local people that tell the history of the village. Visitors can explore the museum and learn about the history and culture of the village.
The phone box was redesigned by members of Warley Community Association (WCA). After researching the uses of other phone boxes, including book exchanges and cafes, the group decided to create the museum. The work and planning were carried out by Mrs. Bailey, her carpenter husband Doug Bailey, and Warley artists Paul and Chris Czainski. And the museum was unveiled (揭牌)by mayor Howard Blagbrough. Kathryn Gallagher from WCA, said,“We just started talking about what we could do with the phone box and came up with the idea. Many people are excited to come and look at it.”
The theme is currently local history, but the group plans to make changes every three months. WCA has also submitted an application for the museum to be included in the Guinness Book of World Records.
Eliana Bailey, WCA chairwoman, said:“We've had a positive response. People thought it was amazing. When they saw the inside of the museum they could not believe it. It's so great to show the history and culture of the village.”

A European gym and fitness provider is offering customers a delicious deal at their new café: work out and get a free meal.
At the Run for Your Bun Café in London, David Lloyd Clubs is advertising its new activity as the first of its kind in the world. According to its advertisement, potential customers just need to book a lunch reservation, then complete a six?minute workout consisting of intervals on the rowing machine and spin bike. After exercising, people can order one of four tasty, healthy options on the café's menu for free.
The gym chain explained that the motivation behind the activity is to get sedentary(久坐不动的)office workers away from their desks during the workday. “According to our research British office workers spend almost 90 percent of the working day sitting, being inactive and eating lunch at their desks — a problem worsened by the huge popularity and convenience of food and shopping delivery apps,” Elaine Denton, a health and fitness expert from David Lloyd Clubs, said in a statement. “We want to remind workers of the importance of being active at work and moving around more.”
She added,“Importantly, the café isn't in any way about encouraging people to ‘cancel out’ calories through exercise. Indeed, the micro workout at Run for Your Bun Café only represents a part of the calories contained in any of the lunch foods.”
Though the deal is only open to Londoners from Jan. 11 to Jan. 13, the model is one that is likely to inspire lots of copycats(模仿者) around the globe. Interested parties can head to 3 Slingsby Place, London from 12 pm to 3 pm until Friday.

Time flies! This is a third year that I have been in this school. In the past two and a half years, our school had organized many activities. What impressed me most was an activity called “Learning to Farm”. In an autumn afternoon, we were sent to a farm which we learnt to plant potatoes. Having been in the city for so a long time, we were so happy to go to the countryside. After divided into three groups, we started to work. Some students cut potatoes into pieces, some dug holes, and the others put the pieces of potatoes into the hole, put the earth back and pushed them down hard. We continued doing that until all the work was done. Although we were exhausted, but we felt fulfilled on our way back home.

Booking a trip on an online travel site is convenient, but comes with its own set of problems.
◆They know who's going to spend more.
Last year, US travel research company Orbitz tracked people's online activities to test out whether Mac users spend more on travel than PC users. It turned out that on average, Mac users lay out $20?30 more per night on hotels. As a result, online travel sites show these users more expensive travel options first. To avoid paying more, sort results by price.
◆ Their software doesn't always link the hotel's system.
A guaranteed reservation is almost impossible to come by anywhere — the risk of your flight or hotel being overbooked increases with third party providers. The middleman's software isn't immune(不受影响的)to system errors, so always call the hotel or airline to make sure your booking is processed.
◆You could miss out on loyalty (忠诚) points.
Third party providers can get between you and frequent flyers miles or points. Many hotel loyalty programs don't recognize external sites, while others award only minimum points without special offers, like double points on hotel stays.
◆Don't be fooled by packages: Often, they're low?end items grouped together.
Ever noticed how travel sites recommend a hotel, a rental car, and tour packages all in one click? These deals usually feature travel that no one wants, like flights with multiple layovers(中途停留). Check the fine_print.
◆Once your trip is purchased, you're on your own.
An online travel agency can't provide assistance the same way an agent can if a flight is cancelled or a room is substandard. Basically, when you arrive at the airportor hotel, you're just another customer who booked at the lowest rate.
An online travel agency can't provide assistance the same way an agent can if a flight is cancelled or a room is substandard.
分析:该句为主从复合句,句中if a flight is cancelled or a room is substandard为if引导的条件状语从句。
1. What does the writer mainly intend to tell readers?
A.Tips of how to reserve flights online.
B.Problems of reserving a hotel online.
C.Notices about reserving a trip online.
D.Traps in reserving hotels and flights online.
通读全文可知,第一段“Booking a trip on an online travel site is convenient, but comes with its own set of problems”为文章主题句。 A项错在flights online,与第一段第一句“Booking a trip on an online travel site is convenient, but comes with its own set of problems”的表述不符;B、D项仅为文章的细节之一,无法说明全文的目的。
2. Why do people probably spend more on their online reservations for trips?
A.They book at prices offered first by travel sites.
B.They are shown less expensive travel options first.
C.Some of the travel expenses are earned by Mac users.
D.Their flights or hotels are overbooked by tourist agencies
根据第二段的第二、三句“It turned out that on average, Mac users lay out $20?30 more per night on hotels. As a result, online travel sites show these users more expensive travel options first”可知,在线预订的旅馆价格较高是因为在线旅行网站会先向用户展示价格更高的选择,故A项正确。
3. Which of the following can replace the underlined “fine print”?
A.Detailed items. B.Discounted prices.
C.Good deals. D.Special services.
根据该段标题“Don't be fooled by packages: Often, they're low?end items grouped together”可知,该段主要提醒在线预订旅行的顾客不要受网上旅游包服务项目欺骗。
4. What can we learn from the passage?
A.The third parties will provide good travel services online.
B.Few people book trips online because of possible troubles.
C.Travelers' interests may not be guaranteed with booking online.
D.Those booking trips online will benefit much from loyalty points.
