Teaching aims :
1 Read and learn the five simple forms of English poems. ( comprehensive understanding)
2 Learn to write a poem in cinquain.
3 Improve the students’ reading abilities, especially understanding of long sentences.
Difficult points :
1 Understanding the passage as a whole.
2 Writing :express an idea in cinquain.

Step 1 lead- in
Today we’ll learn sth. about poetry or poems. As a Chinese ,we can read and recite many poems ,especially Tang Poems. Our country is a country famous for poems. But do you know some English poems?
Ss activity : Try to recite some English poems the students are familiar with.
Teacher’s activity : Show 2 famous simple poems and get the ss read and enjoy them.
The first : A grain of sand

Part2 Discussion ( Group work)
A question for the ss to discuss : Why do people write poems? Give your own opinions.
Get the ss to discussion the question in groups of four .
Get some students to present their answers. Then read para1 of the text and enrich their knowledge about the topic.
Step 2 Fast reading ( read to understand)
Ss read the whole passage and find out how many forms of poems are mentioned in the text.
What are they?
The possible answer: Five simple forms of poems : nursery rhyme , List poems , Cinquain , Haiku and Tang poems.
Part 3 Careful reading
Learn the first3 forms of the poems in the text and learn to write a cinquain.
Step 1 Nursery rhymes ( read to find )
Show the students a nursery rhyme in PPT.

The ss read and experience the beauty of of a nursery rhyme. Especially it’s repetition and rhyme.
Read and answer
Read Paragragh2 carefully and find out the characteristics (特点) of nursery rhymes
Then fill out the forms in proper words and phrases.

3) Does the speaker really believe his own excuse?

Explain the structure of a cinquain to the students.
It’s simple and easy to write. Encourage the students to write a cinquain on their own..

1 Preview the rest part of the passage. Read and translate.
2 Writing
Why do people write poems? Give your opinions. Write a short passage. (50- 80 words)
