A
Think of the animal world, and a group of colorful wild animals will spring to mind:a parrot's rainbow feathers(羽毛) or the showy scales(艳丽的鳞片) of sea fish. But,many mammals(哺乳动物) on the planet come in only two colors:black and white. Spend some time exploring what science has discovered about these animals' appearances, and you'll see that basic black and white isn't so basic at all.
The panda's white body helps it hide in snowy areas. The arms and legs are black, helping it hide in forests. The markings on its head are not used to hide, but to communicate. Black ears can act as a warning to enemies.

Depending on the species, black skunks (臭鼬) may wear white spots that act as covering or white stripes that signal enemies to be aware of their smelly spray, which causes no real harm to its victims, but it surely makes them uncomfortable.

Zebras' thin coats make them more vulnerable than long-haired animals to biting flies that carry disease, but the coats' stripes prevent flies from landing on them, for reasons that scientists are still studying. Further, their attractiveness to flies increases with stripe width. No two zebras' stripes are exactly the same.
( )31. According to the passage, which of the following sentences is TURE?
A. The panda's white parts help it hide against snow.
B. Both white spots and white stripes help skunks kill their victims.
C. Zebras with wider stripes are less attractive to flies.
D. Scientists have already known all the secrets about the stripes.
( )32. What does the underlined word “vulnerable” mean?
A. Being easily landed. B. Being easily attracted.
C. Being easily discovered. D. Being easily attacked.
( )33. Which could be the best title of the passage?
A. Why Animal Stripes Come in Different Shapes
B. Why So Many Animals Wear Black- and- White Coats
C. How Wild Animals Protect Themselves from Enemies
D. How Black and White Become Basic Colors in Animal World

A squirrel (松鼠) that was nearly killed nine years ago continues to visit the family that saved, raised and later sent her into the wild
In October 2009, a four-week-old squirrel was almost killed by an owl (猫头鹰). Luckily a wildlife rescue group saved her and left her in the care of Brantley Harrison and her family in South Carolina. The Harrisons often look after wild animals and later send them back into the wild.
The Harrisons named her Bella. With three other squirrels,Bella stayed in Brantley's care until spring. During her stay, Bella acted similarly to the other squirrels. In April 2010,the squirrels were sent back into the wild. Bella, however, wasn't ready to leave her human family. Within days of being released, she started visiting them, looking for treats. Brantley said that the other squirrels also came back over the first few days, but within a week they stopped coming by and began to avoid people.
“Bella usually sits at the front door, waiting for someone to notice her. She comes almost every day. ” said Brantley. Her husband John often brings Bella nuts as she is usually waiting by the door for him. Actually Bella has become a member of the family.
For nine years, she continues to visit them. Brantley said,“If Bella can teach at least one person to care for all living things,no matter how big or how small, then we have done what we have set out to. ”
( )34. The underlined part “being released” means “________”.
A. getting hurt B. dropping by
C. being saved D. being sent into the wild
( )35. What does Paragraph 4 mainly tell us?
A. Bella wants to get more attention.
B. Bella becomes a member of the family.
C. Nuts are Bella's favorite food.
D. It's not easy for the Harrisons to find Bella.
( )36. What's the best title for the passage?
A. To Save Squirrels
B. Ways of Volunteering
C. The Harrisons and Their Pets
D. A Squirrel and Her Human Family

Many people say dolphins are intelligent. They seem to be able to think, understand and learn things quickly. But are they as smart as humans,or are they more like cats and dogs?Dolphins use their brains quite differently from the way humans do. But scientists say dolphins and humans are very similar in some ways. How?
Like humans, every dolphin has its own “name”. The name is a special whistle(哨声). Each dolphin chooses a specific(特有的)whistle for itself, usually by its first birthday. Dolphins are like people in other ways, too. They “talk”to each other about a lot of things—such as their age, their feelings, and finding food. They also use a system of sounds and body language to communicate. But understanding their conversations is not easy for humans. No one “speaks dolphin”yet, but some scientists are trying to learn.
Dolphins are also social animals. They live in groups called pods, and they often join others from different pods to play games and have fun—just like people. Scientists believe playing together is something only intelligent animals do.
Dolphins and humans are similar in another way:Both species make plans for getting things they want. In the seas of southern Brazil, for example, dolphins use an intelligent plan to get food. When there are fish near a boat, dolphins signal(发信号)to the fishermen to put their nets in the water. Using this method, the men can catch a lot of fish. Why do dolphins help the men? There is an advantage for them:they get to eat some of the fish that escape (逃脱) from the net.
( )37. What is a dolphin's “name”?
A. It is a kind of game. B. It is a body sign.
C. It is a dolphin's age. D. It is a specific sound.
( )38. What does the underlined word “others” refer to?
A. Other fishes. B. Other people.
C. Other dolphins. D. Other games.
( )39. What can we infer from the passage?
A. Some scientists can understand dolphins' system of sounds.
B. Dolphins probably help fishermen by using their body language.
C. Humans join dolphins' groups to get things we want.
D. Dolphins can talk to humans about their age and their feelings.
( )40. What's the main idea of the passage?
A. Dolphins can communicate with each other at birth.
B. Dolphins are social animals because they play together.
C. Dolphins are smart and are like humans in some ways.
D. Dolphins help humans do many things like catching fish.

35. B 36. D
C. 37. D
38. C 点拨:词句猜测题。题干意为:画线单词“others”指的什么?根据第三段第二句“They live in groups called pods,…”可推知,此处others=other groups(dolphins)。故选C。
39. B 点拨:推理判断题。题干意为:从这篇文章中我们能推断出什么?根据最后一段最后两句“Why do dolphins help the men? There is an advantage for them:they get to eat some of the fish that escape(逃脱)from the net. ”可推知,海豚可能用它们的肢体语言来帮助渔民。故选B。
