教学目标
1 所有学生都能找到文章的写作线索:How did Xie Lei’s feeling change?
2 至少80%的学生能够复述谢蕾为适应国外生活所作出的努力,能够用所学语言(board with/substitute family/ tutor/ revision /contradict...)设计出交换留学生的项目。
3 每一位学生都能积极思考谢蕾所遇到的困难以及解决方式;并能用英语在小组讨论中与同伴分享自己思考的结果;在小组代表向全班展示时,能够认真倾听,并学会适时向发言者提问。
4 通过观看视频以及小组讨论,欣赏主人公坚持和努力工作的精神。

The students will be divided into 9 group and choose a group leader. Number the paragraphs in the whole article.
2 Individual work:
Learn new words and expressions in the word list of unit 5. Search Internet about oversea students learning life.
Direction:给学生分组以及给课文分段为课堂的活动开展打好形式基础。通过个人的上网查找资料和熟悉单词,拓展了话题讨论的视野,为最终的语言输出做好内容上的准备。

The students will watch a movie and guess who the people in the movie are and where they are from.
Students are expected to be aroused their interests about the topic: oversea students’ life.
The teacher guide the students to guess the characters’ information in the movie.
With the help of the two questions, the teacher will arouse students’ interests about the topic.

The students read the first two paragraphs within 1 minute and try to fill in blanks about Xie Lei’s basic information.
The teacher guides them how to find basic information by underline key words and phrases.

The students focus their attention on four parts of XieLei’s life:
As a new arriver, accommodation, learning style, present situation and her feelings about those four aspects. With teacher’s guiding questions, theyskim the whole passage to catch the feeling clue of the passage.
The teacher give guide students time to skim the passage using the following questions:
When she faced a whole new way of life, what’s her feeling?
Where did she live?
What did she feel about her accommodation?
What marks did she get of her essay?
What did she feel when she got an E?
How about her present situation? What’s her feelings?

Detailed reading

The students are requested to read paragraph 4 to 5 carefully in order to find the efforts that Xie Lei made to change her feelings. And then they have to fill in the blanks with the proper information summarized according to each paragraph. After that they have to individually practice spoken English by deliver the speech of “What I can learn from Xie lei”. During the process the key words and sentences are consolidated, which will contribute to their role play later on.
The teacher encourage students to fill in blanks and express themselves by giving them language scaffolds.

The students are asked to discuss about the difficulties Xie Lei may encounter and find out solutions, putting forward different ideas in their own groups.
The teacher offers some help in their group discussion and encourage them to express their point of views.

Movie time

Students are expected to watch a movie about Chinese International students at Harvard University, aimed to learn more about oversea students’ life.
The teacher play the movie for them.
观看电影,是对讨论部分的总结与思维拓展,同时,同时感受到留学生活的艰难,为最后的情感引领做好铺垫。
Role play

The students start to prepare for a role play based on what they have learned from the passage and their discussion. They have to make sure to use as many words and expressions from the passage or related to the topic. Finally, they will cooperate with each other to act out their program design.
After one group’s presentation, some students will make some comments on their performance according to the evaluation standards.
The teacher introduces them how to make the role play; and then offer necessary help during the students’ preparation. After the presentation, some students will be selected to make some comments.
学生们在角色扮演中练习本课所学的句型、词汇、锻炼合作意识,提高口语表达能力,达成教学的语言目标。在评价的过程中,学生又可以对自身语音语调、流畅性以及使用的语言有一个正确的估评。

The teacher plays PPT while reading the poem to them.

The students are requested to write a letter to Finland students to give them some suggestions about how to fit in with Chinese students’ life.
The teacher gives the students an assignment and make some explanations.
