Hello London Foodies!
I’m kicking off this week’s blog by talking about a fantastic new Turkish restaurant in Soho called Moda. I can’t remember ever eating better dolma or hummus—it was so delicious! The chef insists that fruit and vegetables are brought over every day from Turkey—and from nowhere else. He may be a perfectionist, but it was so delicious that I can’t complain. Moda isn’t cheap, but it’s worth every penny.
And I’ve got great news for you. When I told him that I write a food blog, he said he’d give all my readers a 10% discount! Just mention this blog when you book.
A very different restaurant, where I had lunch last Monday, is Chez Fitz. Situated near Leicester Square, its main selling point is that its food is all locally sourced(within 30 kilometers of the restaurant). My friends and I were completely surprised—we had no idea that so much could be grown so close to central London. But it turns out that there are pockets of green all over the city—you just need to know where to look.
One final point: I couldn’t believe how pricey my weekly shop was this week. Normally it’s about £40, but this week it was more than £55 for more or less the same amount of food. Any ideas why?
More in a couple of weeks as I’m going away on my holiday tomorrow.
COMMENTS
Ecovore10 October
I am not sure if we should be supporting restaurants like Moda. They are very bad for the environment. What about all the extra carbon emissions from the “food miles” created by bringing over those ingredients from Turkey?
LondonMum 11 October
I know what you’re saying, Ecovore, but don’t have a go at restaurants like Moda. If we grow foreign vegetables in the U.K., then we have to use heated greenhouses and that probably uses even more energy.

“I’ve always loved food,” says Cassie Dawson in the kitchen of her flat in London. “But I’ve become bored with eating out.I’ve had too many disappointing meals and paid too much money for them! At one point, fed up with my complaint, a friend suggested I open my own restaurant. Impossible, I thought. But then I heard about supper clubs…”
Supper clubs are a mixture of a restaurant and a dinner party—you go to a stranger’s house and he/she cooks dinner for you.Like a restaurant, you pay for your food, but like a dinner party, you eat at the same table as other people. They are advertised through social?networking sites with a menu and little information about where the supper club is until just before the meal.
“It’s like running a secret restaurant for one night,” says Cassie.“The next morning, I set the tables and chairs aside.I put the TV back and it’s my living room again.”
Cassie opens her “restaurant” for people about once a month, and she really enjoys the evenings she’s had so far.She uses fresh, local ingredients and a typical meal costs about the same as a takeaway—much less than a restaurant meal.So how does she make money out of it?
“I don’t,” says Cassie.“In fact, at first I was worried about losing money on my club.I’m good at cooking but my maths is terrible! But I was surprised by how cheaply I could make a good meal. This isn’t about money. It’s about a different eating experience.”
And what about inviting complete strangers into her house? Was Cassie ever nervous about that?
“Not at all,” she says.“Almost everyone at the supper club is just interested in having a good meal with other interesting people.”
5.Why did Cassie decide to open her own restaurant finally?
A.To earn a living.
B.To satisfy her friend’s needs.
C.To make friends with strangers.
D.To cook cheap and good meals for others.
6.What does the underlined word “They” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A.Dinner parties. B.Supper clubs.
C.Fresh ingredients. D.Dinner invitations.
7.What can we know about Cassie’s restaurant?
A.It serves meals for free. B.It only serves takeaways.
C.It is only open to her friends. D.It is only open in the evening.
It’s like running a secret restaurant for one night以及第四段中的she really enjoys the evenings可知,Cassie的私人餐厅只在晚上营业,故选D项。
8.How does Cassie feel about her restaurant now?
A.Worried. B.Content.
C.Annoyed. D.Sensitive.

Here are some ways to make healthy snacking part of your everyday routine:
Prepare healthy snacks in advance. Do you know that you can make your own granola(格兰诺拉麦片) or trail mix(果仁混合包)? When you make something by yourself, you get to control the ingredients and put in what’s good for you! You can also keep plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables at home to have a go. __1__ Keep the servings in bags in the fridge, and ready to grab and go.
__2__ Make it a habit to stash some fruit, whole?grain crackers, or baby carrots in your backpack or workout bag so you can always have some healthy foods nearby. Half a cheese sandwich also makes a great snack.
Make it interesting. __3__ What you should do is that you give yourself a variety of choices. Whole?wheat pretzels with spicy mustard(芥末酱), rice cakes with peanut butter and raisins, or low?fat fruit yogurts are healthy, tasty, and easy.
__4__ If you’re crazy about chocolate, try a hot chocolate drink instead of a chocolate bar. An 8?ounce mug of hot chocolate has only 140 calories and 3 grammes of fat. The average chocolate bar, on the other hand, has 230 calories and 13 grammes of fat. Substitute nonfat frozen yogurt or sorbet for ice cream.
Read serving size information. What looks like a small package of cookies can contain 2 or more servings, which means double or even triple the amounts of fat, calories, and sugar shown on the label.
__5__ Evenings can be a tempting time to eat sugary and fatty snacks. If you’re really feeling hungry, don’t ignore it. Instead, pick the right snacks to fill the hunger gap. Whole?wheat fig bars, rice cakes, or air?popped popcorn can do the job.
A.Carry healthy snacks with you.
B.Don’t ignore dinner.
C.Cut up fruits or vegetables in advance.
D.Satisfy cravings with healthier ways.
E.Healthy snacking doesn’t have to be boring.
F.Don’t eat snacks at the time of watching TV.
G.Prepare some fruits in time of hunger.
结合本段中的so you can always have some healthy foods nearby可知,本段列举了一些可随身携带的健康食品,与A项信息一致,故选A项。
根据空前的Make it interesting可知,E项中的doesn’t have to be boring与其相呼应,故选E项。
