In the state of Maryland, a girl was born into slavery (奴隶制) in 1820. Her parents named her Araminta Harriet Ross. She was to become Harriet Tubman. She was one of about one million Africans in slavery in the?United States.
From the age of five, Harriet Tubman's owners made her work very hard. First, she cared for the child of the farm owner. Then, she did hard work on large farms.
Although she could not read or write, Tubman learned from her parents to do what was right. Through her whole life, Tubman put herself in danger to help other people.
One such act changed her life when she was 13 years old. Because she helped another slave, her owner threw a piece of metal at her and it hit her on the head. She was badly hurt. For the rest of her life, Tubman's head wound caused problems for her.
When she was about 25 years old, Harriet married a free black man named John Tubman. But she was still a slave. Her life was so difficult that she decided to escape (逃走). She travelled for 145 kilometres, and finally crossed into the North. Tubman became a free woman.
But Tubman could not leave her family enslaved in the South. So she travelled back to help them escape as well. Then, she made many trips and guided about 300 slaves to freedom. Tubman also fought bravely in the American Civil War and in 1865 slavery was not allowed in the?US.
Harriet Tubman died in 1913. Her memory brings hope to many people — especially to those who fight for justice (正义). She encouraged people to never give up.

One of the most unusual flowering plants in the world, the Snowdonia hawkweed (斯诺登水兰), grows only in Snowdonia National Park in northern Wales. The area is rocky and mountainous, and the air is cool and wet. The Snowdonia hawkweed prefers this area. In fact, it grows nowhere else in the world. It is even picky about where it grows in the park.
The Snowdonia hawkweed is about two inches tall with bright yellow flowers. It may not be the most beautiful plant in the world, but it is a favorite snack of sheep.
In 1953, the Snowdonia hawkweed disappeared. People feared that the plant was gone forever. They believed that the sheep there had eaten the last few plants. So, the people who ran the park took the sheep away from the area, hoping that the hawkweed might return. In 2002, almost 50 years after it was thought to be?extinct, a group of plant scientists found the yellow flowers in the park — exactly where it had last been seen, and where it had been searched for without success. The hawkweed had returned!
To try to prevent the plant from disappearing again, scientists collected seeds (种子) from the plant. Since 2002, the unusual plant has continued to appear in the park.

A new law in Arizona requires high school students to pass the United States' citizenship (公民身份) test. There're 100 questions on?US?history and government in the test.
The Joe Foss Institute helped create the law. They want to pass a law in each of the 50 states to require high school students to pass the test.
A 2010 national test showed only about 25 percent of students in their final year of high school had a good understanding of American government. Thirty-six percent did not have even a basic understanding.
“That's a shame, and it's not only a shame,” said John Hale, the Associate Director of the Center for Civic (公民的) Education in California. Mr. Hale thinks it is dangerous when citizens do not know or care about how their government works. He says students do not only need to learn facts about government. They should also learn how to take part in their communities. “Requiring high school students to take the test might be a way to improve students' civic behavior,” he says.
But some wonder if a test young people take in high school will make adults more active in their communities.
Sam Stone writes reports for the Joe Foss Institute. He says research shows that civic education does result in more involved (参与的) adults. He noted a 2012 survey that found the more young people studied civics in high school, the more likely they were to get actively involved in their communities.
In another state,?Virginia, many people are against the test. Meg Gruber is the President of the Virginia Education Association. She says students already take classes in civics and?US?history. And, she says, schools should not have to pay more for the test.
Sam Stone agrees. He says his organization is paying for an online testing website. Schools can use the website to give the test for free.
28. The US citizenship test _____.
A. is a required test all over?America
B. was created by the Joe Foss Institute
C. helps students understand American government
D. has been included in American law for five years
29. What may John Hale agree with?
A. How the?US?government works should not be open to the public.
B. It's a shame that the?US?government is unpopular with students.
C. Community activities outweigh facts about the?US?government.
D. The US citizenship test will be good for students and society.
30. The result of the 2012 survey _____.
A. was different from Sam Stone's findings
B. showed civics helped students become more active citizens
C. led more young people to study civics
D. showed students were as interested as adults in their government
31. What did Meg Gruber think of the citizenship test?
A. Unimportant.?? ????????????? B. Unpleasant.??

Long, long ago people couldn't write and they had no books. But they had stories. People learned the stories by heart and taught new ones to one another. Sometimes it was hard to remember them all.??36?
The ancient Egyptians wrote their stories on something made from papyrus (纸莎草) plants. People in other places learned to use papyrus from the Egyptians.?37??So parchment (羊皮纸), made from goatskin, later took its place.
In ancient?China?books looked a little different. People there used ink to write on bamboo or silk. And then they invented paper. Made of trees, paper was easier and cheaper to make than papyrus or parchment.??38??Papermaking later spread to the West, but there was a big problem with these early books. Every single one had to be copied and written by hand.
?39??They carved (雕刻) a page of words into a piece of wood or stone. They could then print the page by spreading ink on the wood or stone and putting it against paper. But it wasn't until a German printer invented movable, metal letters that books became fast and easy to make. The letters could be used to print copy after copy, and the letters put together again and again to print different pages of words.
?40??Once a luxury (奢侈品) only the rich could buy, they soon became a treasure everyone could enjoy.
A. But papyrus grew mainly in?Egypt.
B. It took years to finish making just one book.
C. Finally books could be printed by the thousands.
D. Things grew a little easier when writing was invented.
E. Its surface was smoother and better for writing on too.

Wanda Butts dropped the phone and screamed when she heard the news that her son was dead.
Josh had drowned (溺亡) while sailing on a lake with friends. The 16-year-old didn’t know how to swim, and he wasn’t wearing a life jacket.
Josh was not alone in the black community. According to USA Swimming, 70% of African-American children cannot swim. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, African-American children between the ages of 5 and 14 are three times more likely to drown than white children in the same age range (范围).
In 2007, Butts started the Josh Project, a non-profit (非营利组织) that provides low-cost swimming lessons for children in Toledo, Ohio. The swimming lessons take place at a local high school over four Saturdays for a total cost of $10.
To date, the Josh Project has helped more than 1,000 children learn how to swim.
“The public pools near our home were closed, and other places were not affordable,” said Lisa Haynes, whose 14-year-old son, Joshua, is one of 60-plus students in the Josh Project this summer.
“I am less worried if Joshua is near water because he has the basics of how to swim,” Haynes said. “And we’re thankful for that.”
Butts is doing much more, however, than just providing swimming lessons.
“She ups the awareness (意识),”?said Shaun Anderson, a swimming coach who was so inspired by her story that he created a Josh Project swimming program at Norfolk State University.?“Once these communities learn how to swim, they will pass it down, which results in future generations (代) that know how to swim.”
Butts said she has two wishes for the future: One is to change the drowning numbers of African-American children, and the other is to have a swimming center where the children can swim daily instead of just once a week.
24. What led to Josh’s drowning?
A. He was poor in boating skills.
B. He gave his life jacket to a friend.
C. He was never taught swimming skills.
D. He was careless when swimming in the lake.
25. Why did the author list the numbers in Paragraph 3?
A. To show children under 14 are more likely to drown.
B. To argue children should learn swimming at a very young age.
C. To show many African-American children lack swimming skills.
D. To introduce the difference between African-American and white children.
26. What can we learn about the Josh Project?
A. It has its own swimming pools.
B. It provides lessons only in summer.
C. It serves children aged from 5 to 14.
D. Its swimming lessons take place once a week.
27. What did Lisa Haynes think of the swimming lessons the Josh Project provides?
A. Expensive. ?????????????
B. Helpful.

There’s nothing like Christmas in New York City. Among hundreds of traditions, one of the most beloved is the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s famous Christmas tree. People from around the world visit the Met daily and are impressed by the 20-foot tree and its special decorations.
Instead of the usual decorations, beautiful angels (天使) and candles hang from the tree. At the base are lifelike handmade figures of townspeople of Bethlehem doing their daily tasks, as well as animals. The room is warmly lit, and there’s beautiful Christmas songs softly playing, creating a feeling of calm that is really hard to find during Christmas.
Jasmin, an Australian student studying in the United States, says that the tree is “wonderful because you don’t often see trees like this.” And she says that her “favorite part of the tree is the beautiful angels.”
The tree has a rich history behind it. The decorations and figures were gifted to the museum by collector Loretta Hines Howard. More than 200 eighteenth-century figures were given to the Museum starting in 1964, and they have been displayed (展览) each holiday season with a Christmas tree. Each year, new angels and figures are added to the collection and display.
If you want to fully experience the beauty of the figures, you’ll need to get close to the tree, most easily done when there aren’t many visitors surrounding (围绕) it, so try to visit early in the day or on a weekday if possible. Each year they change how the figures are placed and with so many beautiful pieces in the collection, it’s easy to find something new to examine.
28. What is special about the Christmas tree in the Metropolitan Museum of Art?
A. It has a long history.
B. It welcomes visitors all year round.
C. It is displayed with special figures.
D. It is the highest Christmas tree in New York.
29. How do visitors probably feel when entering the display room?
A. Warm. ???????????????????
B. Lucky. ?????
C. Peaceful. ????????
D. Satisfied.
30. What can we infer about the figures?
A. They grow each year in number.
B. They were made by Loretta Hines Howard.
C. They show people’s life in the 20th century.
D. They are especially popular among young people.
31. Which of the following is the best title of the text?
A. Christmas in New York
B. Meet the magical Christmas tree
C. The Metropolitan Museum of Art
D. The perfect place to spend your Christmas

Everybody knows how important it is for students to get a good night’s sleep every night. They aren’t able to do their best unless they sleep well. Most experts agree that the proper number of hours is eight, and this has been accepted as common sense for as long as I can remember. However, I was young once and I know that most of you get much less sleep than that — and sometimes this affects your schoolwork.
I read an article in a teachers’ magazine recently. They did a study of 848 students in Wales. Worryingly, the results suggested that teenagers are facing a new problem. They may go to bed and get up at proper times but a growing number wake up in the middle of the night, not to use the bathroom or have a snack (点心) but because of FOMO?—?the fear of missing out!
According to the article, schoolchildren suffer (遭受痛苦) because of an increasing trend (趋势) to wake up during the night to check social media. Afraid of missing a message or chance to take part in a discussion, teens wake up at all times of the night to go online and join up with social groups. All this happens when they should be sound asleep.
The report gives some worrying numbers. 23% of 12- to 15-year-olds wake up nearly every night to use social media. Another 15% wake up at night once a week for the same reason. As a result, one in three students are constantly tired and unable to do well at school.
So, I’d like to ask you to be responsible when it comes to social media. Be brave and turn off your phones and computers at night. The world won’t end and your social media will be waiting to greet you in the morning. I give you my word that you won’t have missed anything important.
32. What is the new trend among teenagers?
A. They get up too early in the morning.
B. They have difficulty in falling asleep at night.
C. They wake up at night to get something to eat.
D. They wake up in the middle of the night to go online.
33. How did the author introduce the new trend?
A. By using examples.
B. By asking questions.
C. By making a comparison.
D. By showing research findings.
34. What is FOMO?
A. A fear of going online.
B. A fear of losing touch on social media.
C. A need to go out all the time.
D. A need to use the latest technology.
35. What can we learn about the author’s opinion on the new trend?
A. It’s worrying.
B. It’s encouraging.
C. It’s hard to understand.
D. It’s difficult to change.

I recently watched a woman film herself as she walked around an ancient building in San Sebastian, Spain. The place was rich in history and the view (风景) was great. But she wasn’t looking at the blue sea or the old houses?—she was looking at her camera!
?
What are we missing by seeing life through social media? I’m not the first person to ask that question but I’ll also admit I’m part of the “problem”. I take photos of beautiful places and enjoy them just for their social media value.
I remember a usually cheerful friend of mine going through his Facebook feed one day during a quiet afternoon at work. “I’m so depressed. Everyone’s going to the most wonderful places and having the most wonderful time,” he said. Except they’re probably not. One photo shows one moment in a day. People simply don’t post a photo of the time when they got into a fight with their taxi driver.
Take the day that I got more?“likes”?than usual for a picture I’d posted on Instagram. I’d gone to a temple (寺庙) in Japan and spent the day climbing hundreds of steps to see what turned out to be a rather ordinary temple. I had seen a lot of temples by then and this one was a bit disappointing. That evening, I posted a photo of an ice cream with colourful little sugary decorations on it and was surprised by how many of my?“followers”?liked it. But that ice cream didn’t sum up (概括) my day and I felt like a bit of a liar.
Of course, that experience hasn’t stopped me using social media. I can see the advantages too — “connecting” with friends overseas, taking photos to remember the beauty of a moment, sharing our experiences of new places. We want to remember the good moments of travelling and social media helps us do that. But let’s not forget that’s only one part of travelling. Is that photo you just posted as important as being there in that moment and in that place?

It continues to be an important part of our company policy (公司政策) to pay attention to the well-being of people in the areas which we serve. In the past year, we have centered especially on education and training, and have put over £4,000,000 in this and other areas from the care of the old to the arts.
Let us look at these first. We have, as always, supported health research and care projects helping not only the old but children and the disabled (残疾的) too. We were especially pleased this year to provide alarms (警报器) for disabled people who live alone and to run programmes which help children understand better the problems facing disabled people.
The Groundwork Foundation encourages young people in poor areas to protect their environment, while the Schools Prom concert at the Royal Albert Hall in London includes 20,000 children nationwide. Both of these were given help in the form of money.
As mentioned above, in the last year we have been active in supporting several education projects. Two of our managers are now out of the company on 1-year projects, training young people for work. In addition, we have started a programme of 3-month plans which managers in our company are able to benefit (受益) from without having to take a long break from their jobs.
It is not only the company that supports good work for other people. Our members are encouraged to join the company’s Give as You Earn system, to give money to others, especially those working for the benefit of the community. In such cases the company often gives its support in the form of money.
We look forward to putting even more money into these and other projects in the coming year.

Recently our class had a discussion about the advantages and the disadvantages of the use of WeChat Moments.
We all think that WeChat Moments is a place where we can upload pictures, share videos and articles, etc. This helps expand our horizons and makes us keep track of each other. However, there are some disadvantages to WeChat Moments. For example, it may put us at risk of giving away our personal information. Also, some people spend too much time looking through their WeChat Moments and as a result they spend less and less time with their family.
In my opinion, WeChat Moments really plays an important role in our communication. But we should use it wisely.
