Carol: I started playing the cello (大提琴) when I was about eight or nine. It was great playing the cello because I was in youth orchestras and we went abroad to do tours. But anyway, when I got to university, I stopped playing. Well, there just wasn't time and there were so many other things to do. Luckily, I took it up after my 25th birthday and joined a band.
Daniel: When I was little, I thought I'd end up learning the guitar like my father, but then I decided that I wanted to have my own instrument (乐器), so I chose the trumpet (小号). I'm in the school jazz band and I'd like to be a musician when I grow up, but my dad says it's difficult to make a living from music. But I don't want to be a lawyer like him. It's so boring.
Carmen: Nobody likes living near someone like me because when I practise, I make a lot of noise! But you have to keep practising, don't you? Otherwise it gets more and more difficult. The trouble is, in the summer, when it's hot, I have to open the windows, so the whole street gets to hear it if I'm not careful. I love playing the drums and I play in a fantastic band.
Vince: I've played the guitar for as long as I can remember, but when I was trying to make it as a musician after school, I used to play in the Underground in?London?to make a bit of extra money. Katie Smith Milway, author of the CitizenKid series, encourages children to be better citizens (公民). Milway's most well-known book is called? One Hen: How One Small?Loan (贷款)?Made a Big Difference. The book is inspired (赋予灵感) by the true story of Kwabena?“Kojo” Darko. It tells how a poor boy, Darko, in?Ghana?receives a small loan and buys a hen. This results in 25 more hens. The farm is enough to support Kojo's family and provide a livelihood for others.
In a recent interview, Darko talked about how the hen changed his life. “It was amazing,” he said. “I slept with the chicken; I did everything with the chicken. It brought us money, and I was able to go to school and study.” The tiny farm finally grew into one of the largest in?West Africa.
Darko went on to become chairman of Opportunity International, an organization that gives loans to people who cannot get them from a bank. “I want to give people who are poor and needy a chance just as someone did for me,” Darko said.
By writing about how small kindnesses can help families like Darko's, Milway hopes to encourage kids to deal with such problems as poverty (贫穷).?“Build a little business,”?she said.?“Maybe it's a lemonade stand. Maybe it's bigger than that. With the money you have made, you have a choice of spending it, saving it, or giving it to help others.”
Milway likes the idea of kids volunteering (志愿工作). When she was growing up, she enjoyed taking part in church activities and her school service organizations. She said that her mother encouraged her by volunteering and helping international students.?“We were always a home where they could feel welcome,” Milway said.

When you first step into a classroom, one of the first things to catch your eye is usually a list of rules. However, there's one rule that you just can't help but question: No electronics. In reality, the classrooms in our schoolhave an aversion to?modern technology, so electronic devices (设备) such as computers and cellphones are not allowed, for they are thought to have a bad influence on children's attention at class. However, is it possible that these devices could actually be used to improve our learning experience?
As is known to us, these years we have spent so much time talking about the disadvantages of modern technology that we've failed to see their advantages in a classroom. Many children of the 80's and 90's still remember learning about history by playing the game? The Oregon Trail, and many of us 2000's kids remember games such as?Brain Age?that encouraged our cognitive (认知的) development.
It doesn't end with educational games, either. Take?Minecraft?for example. While a parent may complain (抱怨) that their child spends too much time playing the hit video game, what they probably fail to realize is that their child's brain is being enriched with information allowing creativity and problem-solving. Children who play on public or local computers may also pick up on social skills. For older children, creating computer games can be a great introduction to coding (编码). Many schools have begun to bring the game into their classrooms.
In the end, it's important that we welcome technological development in our classrooms and see the educational value in having fun. School no longer must mean sitting down for hours in front of a pictureless textbook. Instead, school can be a place where children are able to see learning as a lifelong experience.
29. What does the underlined part “have an aversion to” in Paragraph 1 mean?
A. Change.
B. Dislike.
C. Expect.
D. Overuse.
30. Some computer games are mentioned to show _____.
A. parents know little about computer games
B. children can create better computer games
C. children can learn from computer games
D. parents only welcome educational games
31. What is the author's attitude towards electronic devices?
A. He is against them.??
B. He is in favor of them.
C. He is uninterested in them.????????
D. He is uncertain about them.?
[D]
They are sisters. They are in a car. They are arguing and one of them tries to leave. The two girls are acting but for 17-year-old Ellie it's not all that far from the truth. Next week she will be in court to testify (作证) against a friend who hurt her.?“Being here makes me forget all about that,” she says.
At Breeze Arts Foundation in?Leeds, eight young people between the ages of 16 and 20 are practising what their acting teacher Fiona has presented to them.
Breeze Arts Foundation, which has been running for five years, is trying to get young people who are Neet (not in education, employment, or training) or in danger of becoming Neets back into education or work.
Each member of the group tells a different story. Some are here because they simply can't stay in school, some because they have family problems, and some because they have a history of breaking the law.
The course members attend a 12-week programme. While here they will all work towards an Arts Award (奖) and an end-of-term performance.
Sarah McGlinchey is the course keyworker. As well as designing the courses, she does one-on-one work with the students, helping with everything from housing to job hunting. Lessons are given on Wednesdays and Thursdays but the rest of the time McGlinchey focuses on (集中精力于) one-to-one support.
Some of the teens here will never go on to work in the performing arts, but some will make careers in the area. One former member has worked at the West Yorkshire Playhouse. Another student went on to university to study modern art. Whatever happens, McGlinchey says,?“Learning about performing arts and the arts industry builds their confidence (自信) and shows them what chances are out there.”
32. What does Ellie probably think of the course?
A. It is challenging.
B. It takes her pain away.

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项A、B、C和D中,选出最佳选项。
A
It takes a specific personality type to get up on stage in front of family, friends and strangers and play a character unlike yourself. When you also have to speak, sing and dance on the stage, the task is hard. If you're a young person with Down's syndrome (唐氏综合征), it becomes even harder.
People with Down's syndrome have intellectual and developmental problems, so it?can be really hard for them?to memorise?and?read. But eight theatre lovers?have?done just that,?with some help from local theatre group Hong Kong Players.
Today, the eight performers with Down's syndrome are giving a performance at Grappas Cellar in Jardine House, Central. The show starts at 11.30 am and?the tickets are HK$150.
The Hong Kong Players representatives (代表) working with them, Adam Walker, Candice Caalsen and Claire Johnson, are all performers themselves, and all teach performing arts; they admit working with the group was a special experience.
“Neither Candice, Claire nor myself are specialist teachers for people with special needs, so it has largely been trial and error (反复试验). The members find it hard to remember movements and words, but with repetition, they have developed their skills,”?says Walker.
Walker?says that the things expected of performers in shows can be difficult for people with Down's syndrome, adding that the ages of them — from six to 32 — make it hard to hold everyone's attention at the same time.
He hopes the project can show the public how young people with Down's syndrome can take part in all kinds of events. “We believe all people with Down's syndrome have all sorts of talents, especially in the arts. The performance has helped increase their self expression and self-confidence.”
But it's not all about the actors?—?the Hong Kong Players believe the project will help the public better understand people with Down's syndrome.?“We feel that it is important to offer the skills of our members to the wider community (社区) in order to help people understand other less represented members of society,” says Walker.
1. What does Paragraph 1 try to show about people with Down's syndrome?
A. The reasons why they should perform.
B. The importance of getting them to perform.
C. The difficulties they have when performing.
D. The requirements for them when performing.
2. What do we know about the eight theatre lovers?
A. They are all troubled teenagers.
B. They have put on their own show.
C. Some of them have Down's syndrome.
D. Some of them are part of Hong Kong Players.
3. What does?Walker?think of working with the eight theatre lovers?
A. It is enjoyable.
B. It is demanding.
C. It is a great comfort.
D. It is a bit dangerous.
4. What would?Walker?like the public to do for people with Down's syndrome?
A. Help develop their skills.
B. Find their artistic talents.
C. Better understand them.
D. Provide jobs for them.

For people living in?California, especially in?Irvine, it will be hard to imagine a place without clean water, enough food, and safe houses. However, some people in?Mexico?are fighting against poverty endlessly in order to survive.
I decided to take a break from my busy summer in July last year by volunteering at an orphanage (孤儿院) in Tijuana, Mexico. During my trip, after spending time with some of the orphans, I noticed that their eyes shined with thirst to learn, to socialize and to succeed. All they need is a chance to receive education.
However, the lack of social programs makes it hard for these children to even dream about achieving their academic goals (目标). Therefore, many orphanages depend heavily on organizations and companies for funding (提供资金) in order to improve the quality of education for the orphans.
According to OECD Better Life Index, only 37% of adults in the country between 25-64 have completed upper secondary education. Although the percentage has increased compared to ten years ago, it is still greatly lower than the OECD average of 75%. Despite the government's recent effort to carry out social programs to increase enrollment (登记入学), dropout rates still remain high and many don't finish high school.
However, by changing the overall studying environment and by increasing awareness (意识) of such poverty-stricken areas, the orphans can learn in a better environment with educated teachers and read proper textbooks. As a result, more funding is needed. More funding can also help teenagers get into college in order to achieve their dreams.
Moreover, students need to be provided with the chances to experience non-academic activities in school, such as music programs, computer science, and performing arts so that they can become true intellectuals.
5. What did the author realize about orphans during his trip to?Mexico?
A. They never thought they would succeed.
B. They had a strong desire for knowledge.
C. They had no interest in physical activities.
D. They liked staying alone most of the time.
6. What does the author want to show by giving numbers in Paragraph 4?
A. The government has tried its best.
B. Most Mexicans are poorly educated.
C. The future looks bright for Mexicans.
D. There is a shortage of schools in?Mexico.
7. What does the author think can help the orphans in?Mexico?
A. More volunteering programs.
B. Higher academic goals.
C. Lower education costs.
D. Further funding.
8. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. Education is the key to success for all students. ??????????
B. Taking part in activities makes smart students. ????????????
C. Social programs are now available to students.?????????????
D. Non-academic activities are equally important.

Dear Jack,
I’ve just got the news that a concert will be held in your school. You know, I have a great interest in music so I’d like to attend it very much. Here I’m writing to ask for more information about it.
First, I’m wondering whether students from other schools like me will be allowed to attend it for free? If it is possible, should I wear formal clothing? Second, I’d like to know the exact time and place of the concert. Third, could you tell me what will be performed during the concert?
I would appreciate it if you could send me a reply as soon as possible.

Kids in primary schools in Bellaire, Ohio, have something to sing about. For the past eight years, public primary schools in that town didn’t offer music classes. They didn’t have the money to pay for them. But the school district got some support to bring back music this school year.
Many school officials across the country say music classes get students excited about going to school. And studies have shown that music classes may boost brainpower. For example, researchers from the University of Southern California recently released (发布) the results of a five-year study. They found that the brains of 10- and 11-year-olds who learned to play a musical instrument developed faster than the brains of kids who didn’t.
Though most people aren’t against teaching music in schools, not everyone says it’s necessary.
Many school officials argue (争论) that learning music means less time spent on math, writing, and science, all of which may be more useful to students later in life.
Here’s what two of our readers think.
Music should be taught in school for the simple reason that it makes learning more fun. We have music classes at my school, and I love them!
Taking music lessons can also build character (品质). In 2015, a research company called Grunwald Associates did a survey on music education. More than 60 percent of parents whose kids took music classes in school said their child became more focused.
— Noah Falcon, New Jersey
At my school, we don’t have music classes. I think that’s OK because it gives us more time to focus on main subjects, like reading and math. It’s more important to learn these subjects than it is to learn how to play an instrument or sing.
If someone wanted to take music lessons, he or she could do it outside of school. I took a mariachi (墨西哥街头乐队音乐) class after school, so it didn’t take time away from my other classes.
— Sophia Salazar, California
24. What change has happened in primary schools in Bellaire this year?
A. Music classes are offered.

D. Discover.
26. What does Noah Falcon think of music education?
A. It is unnecessary.
B. It is very important.
C. It is a waste of money.
D. It is easy to continue.
27. What can we learn about Sophia Salazar?
A. She didn’t like music at all.
B. Music brings her more fun.
C. Music helps her keep focused.
D. She took a music class after school.

Ice cream businessman Mikey Cole’s treats are cooler than cool. Truffle Shuffle, Foxy Brown, Brady Bunch — these are just a few of the popular ice creams made at Mikey Likes It Ice Cream in NYC’s East Village. But nine years ago, Michael “Mikey” Cole, the man behind the cold ice creams, was serving something different: “I spent six months on Rikers Island selling drugs,” says Cole, a native New Yorker. “That time in my life was about having fun and being reckless (不计后果的), but things hit home when I was put in prison (监狱).”
Determined to be a changed man once he’d done his time, Cole, now 37, graduated from college and held various jobs until the death of his aunt Lucy — “She used to tell me, ‘Don’t go left when you’re supposed to go right’” — led him to find his real interest. While cleaning out her apartment, Cole discovered her cookbook collection, including a recipe (食谱) for chocolate ice cream. He bought an ice cream maker and began experimenting with her recipe. “It took me away from everything,” he says. Six experiments later, Cole perfected his chocolate treat, Ice Ice Baby, and began selling ice cream out of his apartment.
In 2014, Cole opened his own shop not far from where he grew up. But no matter how popular he becomes, Cole is committed to (忠于) his neighborhood. “For me, ice cream is about encouraging other Mikeys to start businesses and give back,” says Cole, “just like my aunt taught me.” How sweet he is!

A new program encouraging children ages 9 to 12 to get interested in computers, math and science starts next week at all 36 libraries of the San Diego Public Library.
Called “Spring into STEAM,” the program will offer workshops in March, April and May. It begins on March 2.
“We know that science education is so important now, and technology is changing so fast,” said Misty Jones, library director. “We see this as a way to bring kids new ideas and help them know more about the world around them.”
STEAM stands for science, technology, engineering, art and math, and there will be workshops in each area. This year’s theme (主题) is “Bug Out!” so the science workshop will invite insect (昆虫) experts to explain the survival skills of insects. The engineering workshop will watch bees as builders. For math, the kids will learn spatial geometry (空间几何学) by making 3-D paper insects. Kids in other workshops will learn computer coding, create a light using a glass bottle, or build insects using pipe cleaners and LED lights.
Jones said she’s also excited about the chance for children to take part in the International Barcode of Life Project, which is trying to create a digital catalog (电子目录) of different kinds of insects on Earth. Kids in San Diego can ask for free insect collection tools at their local libraries beginning on March 2. Insects they collect can then be sent in for DNA identification (鉴定).
Jones said it is unusual for every library to start the same program at the same time. “It’s something we’ve been trying to do, and I think it’s just the beginning of the chances we will be able to offer,” she said.
32. What do we know about “Spring into STEAM”?

When a grown hummingbird really gets going, it can beat its wings up to 200 times per second and fly forward at about 30 miles per hour. Hummingbirds can also beat their wings both forward and backward as well as up and down. 39 — it is the only type of bird that can hover (盘旋), or stay in one place in the air. Mathew Brady was born in 1822 in Warren County, New York. At this same time, in various countries around the world, the first cameras were being developed. By the time Mathew Brady grew up, the technology had developed enough that cameras had become portable (轻便的). In his early adult life, Brady became interested in the new technology and saw its importance. Later on, he brought the camera to the battlefields (战场) of the Civil War and became known as the first photojournalist.
Mathew Brady began to work in New York City by studying painting. While there he became friends with other artists who had begun using photography for their artwork, and soon joined them. After studying photography, he made a living taking photos of wealthy and famous Americans. After the Civil War started, many of Brady’s customers were soldiers (士兵) passing through who wanted photos taken of themselves. This gave Brady an idea for documenting the war itself with photography.
Brady asked Abraham Lincoln for permission to travel with the army and photograph the war as it was happening. Lincoln agreed, but on the condition that Brady pay for it himself. Brady was able to raise enough money to buy several cameras and portable darkrooms and invited more than twenty men to travel with him. The photographers often got very close to the fighting, but the photographs could only be taken on the battlefields after the fighting was over. Cameras, at the time, needed the subject to be very still, or the picture would be unclear.
Brady and his team took thousands of photographs of the Civil War, and the photographs have since been recognized as very important documents of American history.
Unfortunately, after the war was over, people did not want to remember the difficulties it had caused. Brady had very little success in selling his work. He had thought the government would buy them, but when he offered, the government refused. He died in New York City in 1896, before anyone recognized how important his photographs were.

A. It was changing too fast.
B. It might face a dark future.

Does a grasshopper taco (墨西哥蚂蚱卷饼) sound delicious? If you were living in another part of the world — say, Mexico or Thailand or Kenya — the idea of eating insects might not seem strange to you at all. For thousands of years, insect-eating has been common practice among many of the world’s people. According to insect-eaters around the world, insects are tasty. “When I traveled in Mexico, I tried grasshoppers and found them really delicious,” Arnold van Huis, an insect scientist from Wageningen University in the Netherlands told TFK.
Insect fans say insects are not only tasty, they are also nutritious (有营养的). Arnold van Huis is working with other scientists to encourage insect-eating in areas where it is already common, as well as in Europe and North America, where people are more likely to kill an insect than eat it.
According to the United Nations, the planet’s population is now almost 7 billion. It is expected to reach 9 billion before 2050. By that time, people’s need for meat is expected to double. Raising livestock (家畜) requires large areas of farmland, and feeding the animals can be expensive. “We have to find something else to take the place of meat,” Arnold van Huis says. “One very good choice is using insects.”
Raising insects would require less land, says Arnold van Huis. Insects would also be cheaper to feed. “We throw away one-third of our food,” he says. “Insects could feed on that.”
For insect-eating to become popular in the U.S., Brian Fisher, an insect scientist at the California Academy of Sciences, says people must be careful with ready-to-eat insects. There are more than 1,700 types of insects that are safe to eat. But do not even think of eating insects from your backyard, since there is no way of knowing if they are dangerous! If you really want to eat insects, it is possible to order insect cuisine (烹饪) at a handful of U.S. restaurants.
Arnold van Huis is working with chefs in the Netherlands to develop delicious insect recipes. For one experiment, his team prepared two types of meatballs: some made with meat and others made with mealworms and meat. In a blind taste test, nine out of 10 people preferred the mealworm meatballs.
In the future, will eating insects be common practice for people in Europe and North America? “I’m completely sure it will,” says Arnold van Huis.
5. What can we learn about insect-eating in Thailand or Kenya?
A. It is not allowed.
B. It is not common.
C. It is very popular.
D. It is rather strange.

Dear Jack,
I’m very glad to receive your email. I’m writing to tell you something about our band.
Last month, we gave a performance at our school’s Festival of Music and the Arts. It was a success. So our band is becoming increasingly popular among our schoolmates. Also we visited Xinhua Nursing Home last Sunday afternoon, giving a wonderful performance to the elderly people. To our delight, they enjoyed our songs very much. Our band practices once or twice a week. These days we are practicing “Try Everything”. We need more new English songs. Would you please suggest some to us?
I’m looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Hua
