第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
[A]
In box-office terms, Steven Spielberg is the most successful movie director in the world. Jaws, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Indiana Jones, Schindler’s List ... his movies are cinema classics.
Q: What were you afraid of when you were a child?
A: I was my own monster (怪物). My fancy (想象力) was unbelievable, so I was afraid of everything. A chair could very quickly change into a mouse. I remember looking up at the sky when I was five. One of the clouds up there looked like a beautiful bird, then suddenly it was a tiger. I ran home crying.
Q: What did your parents feel about that?
A: For my parents my imagination was a real problem, so much so that they seriously considered having me examined by a doctor. After all I was always seeing things that didn't exist (存在) except in my head. My mother and father thought I had something wrong with my mind. I probably did — but it is the gateway to a great career!
Q: What do you consider your greatest career achievement so far?
A: The right to decide my own programs. That was always my only dream, telling my stories without anyone else interfering (干预). It was also why I built my own company.
Q: Which movie did you enjoy making most?
A: That was E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, because it was the first time I realized I wanted to be a father. Three years later I had my first son.
Q: Do you make home movies?
A: Yes, I always have a video camera with me. At Christmas it's traditional for my family to see a movie about the family that lasts one hour. We all watch the film together and everyone gets a DVD of it.

NMAAM's aim is to celebrate the more than 50 music styles that African Americans have created or influenced.
“Whether you're talking about country, blues, R&B, jazz, even rock and roll, the odds (可能性) are pretty high that it's African American in its beginnings,” NMAAM president and CEO Henry Hicks says.

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Should we create more national parks to save endangered animals?
Don't you find it worrying that more and more species of animals are in real danger of becoming extinct (灭绝的)? 36 And I think the best way to do this is for governments to create more national parks.
37 If this environment is destroyed — for example, when farmers clear a forest for new fields, or trees are cut down for making money — many animals are unable to survive, and more species are likely to become extinct.
Besides, national parks protect animals from the danger of being hunted. A major reason why many species are endangered is that the animals are killed by hunters. 38 Some hunters even hunt animals simply for sport.
On the other hand, some people fight against the creation of national parks because they consider it wrong to interfere with nature. 39 They say though the animals may face danger, they enjoy a free life. They also point out that a few species are more likely to produce young animals in the wild than in national parks.
All in all, though, these disadvantages are far less important than the benefits (好处) of national parks. 40 As a matter of fact, they protect animals from their greatest enemies, that is, human beings.
A. They hunt animals to make money.
B. To begin with, animals are important to humans.
C. I personally believe that we must save these animals.
D. These parks allow animals to live in a safe environment.
E. Firstly, national parks protect the animals' natural environment.
F. There is a heated discussion about whether to create more national parks.
G. They believe that wild animals are happier living in their natural environment.

选做题
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项A、B、C和D中,选出最佳选项。
A
Endurance (耐力) cyclist Mark Beaumont has made plans to go around the world in 80 days on his bike, which would break the current (当前的) record. To be successful, Beaumont will have to complete the 18,000 mile route (路线) in less than half the time he took when he set the record nine years ago. He will also have to knock about 40 days off the current world record.
Beaumont, 34, will begin his difficult journey on 2 July and will have to travel 240 miles a day to get around the world on time. Beaumont set the world record in 2008, completing his cycle around the globe in 194 days.
As a warm-up to the trip, he will first cycle around the coastline of Britain. The 3,500-mile, 15-day training ride will be at “80 days” pace and will see Beaumont cycle for 16 hours and 240 miles per day.
The cyclist said his average day would see him on the bike at 4:00 and riding for four sets of four hours with half-hour breaks in between. “I'll get off the bike at 9:30 at night, get some sleep until the alarm goes off at 3:30 and then get back on the bike.”
He said: “I cycled around the world nine years ago but that was unsupported, wild man-style, trying to find clean water and a place to sleep. This time it is Tour De France-style. I have a support team behind me and it is just about performance. That makes a huge difference.”
Beaumont said he thought cycling round the world “sounds like a good idea.” He said he had cycled across Scotland as a 12-year-old boy and had been doing endurance rides for the past 20 years. “I know what I'm taking on. Though it frightens me, I believe this is possible,” he said.

Guam is a beautiful, small island in the Pacific Ocean. You'll find happy songbirds, clear blue water, and leafy forest there. But the small island has a big problem: snakes. There are about 2 million brown tree snakes living in Guam.
The snakes likely arrived in the 1940s. They probably slipped (滑行) unseen onto ships and planes heading to Guam. Once there, the snakes laid eggs. Snake families grew. The snakes have no natural enemies to eat them on Guam. Soon, the island was covered with these snakes.
The brown tree snake has had a devastating effect. The snakes eat birds. There used to be 12 kinds of birds on the island. But these snakes have killed off nine kinds of the birds. The snakes can grow to be 10 feet long. They often bite (咬)humans. They climb onto power lines and make the electricity go out. This causes millions of dollars in damage.
Scientists have tried many different ways to control the number of snakes. They have used snake traps and snake-sniffing dogs. Nothing seemed to work. Nothing, that is, until they found a surprising secret weapon (武器): killer mice.
Scientists found out that there is one easy way to kill brown tree snakes. They could give them a medicine called Tylenol. People take Tylenol for headaches and other pains. Even a little bit of Tylenol can kill a brown tree snake.
But how would scientists get the tree snakes to eat Tylenol? They came up with a plan. First, the experts put the medicine into dead mice. Then they attached(系上)each mouse to a mini paper parachute (降落伞). Planes dropped the mice over Guam. The parachutes got caught in the trees. The mice became dinner for the snakes that live there.
Has it worked? So far, research shows that there are fewer snakes because of the mice. The worry is that it may be too late to clear the snakes, but Mr. Vice from Guam's Department of Agriculture says this should not stop the islanders from trying. “Our long-term goal is to kill the snake off completely,” he says.
5. What can we learn about the brown tree snakes?
A. They were shipped to Guam on purpose.
B. They were not native to Guam.
C. They were at risk in the 1940s.
D. They grew very slowly.
6. What does the underlined word “devastating” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Magical.
B. Damaging.
C. Short-term.
D. Interesting.
7. What was a more workable way to kill the brown tree snakes?
A. Letting them eat Tylenol carried by mice.
B. Putting Tylenol in the trees.
C. Bringing in their enemies.
D. Using snake traps.
8. What does Mr. Vice think of solving this snake problem?
A. He is proud of it.
B. He is hopeful of it.
C. He is doubtful about it.
D. He is unconcerned about it.

Hi Ellie,
It’s Jack’s friend Dan here. Hope all’s going well at uni. I can’t believe you’re in your final year already! I’m at Leeds doing the same engineering degree as you. The amount of work was huge at first, but by and large the course is going OK.
You’re probably wondering why I’m writing to you out of the blue like this. I spoke to your brother and he said you wouldn’t mind if I got in touch with you. We’ve been given the chance next year of doing the same year-abroad programme that you did last year in Austria and I just wanted to pick your brains about a couple of things. The choices they’ve given us are Poland, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Portugal and Greece. To be honest, I don’t know much about any of those countries and my foreign language skills only stretch (伸展) to a bit of broken French?—?languages were never my strong point!
So first and foremost, how important do you think it is to be able to speak the language of the host? (主办方) university country? Does the organisation set up language classes for the foreign students? One more thing, do you know how I can go about applying for a scholarship (奖学金)?
Sorry to ask you so many questions, but I really appreciate you helping me out and any advice about anything connected to the year abroad will be happily received!

One afternoon about six years ago, I was entering my new school (Beaver Country Day School) and passing some middle school classrooms. I asked myself, “Every adult in the school sits in a chair that is on wheels. Why aren’t student chairs on wheels?” If chairs on wheels are more comfortable for adults and make them more productive, it seems reasonable?they?would have the same influence on students. So, we ordered some for the middle school and the results were immediately satisfying. Teachers and students alike loved the new chairs. To increase flexibility (灵活性) in the room, we put all classroom furniture (家具) on wheels and made all the walls writeable with long whiteboards.
All of this was easy to do, and not very expensive. The next question I asked myself was: if it’s this easy, why don’t schools pay more attention to learning environments? When new office buildings open, it is common for newspapers to review them and describe how they meet the needs of today’s workers. However, classrooms are still the same as they were more than 100 years ago.
Organizations like Steelcase and Gensler Architects have done in-depth research on workspaces, and Steelcase has paid special attention to schools; they find that workspace and classroom design send powerful messages. When students enter a room with desks or tables in a row and a board at the front, the message is that today we will be on the receiving end of instruction. While with all chairs and tables on wheels and all walls writeable, the message is that today we are going to create something.
As we build schools, let’s think in fresh ways about the student experience. Let’s give the same amount of research-driven thought to the school environment as we do to our best work environments. Let’s put thoughtful student-centered design at the forefront of school design. Maybe then it will be worth the time to write reviews of exciting, new classroom environments.
32. What happened to Beaver Country Day School about six years ago?
A. Students moved into new classrooms.
B. All the classroom walls were repainted.
C. Teachers asked for wheeled chairs in their office.
D. Wheeled furniture was introduced into classrooms.
33. What does the underlined word “they” in the first paragraph refer to?
A. Adults. ??????????????????
B. Chairs on wheels.
C. Students. ????????
D. Middle school classrooms.
34. How did the author explain the advantage of the new classroom design?
A. By listing numbers.
B. By offering examples.
C. By showing research findings.
D. By asking questions and answering them.
35. What did the author suggest doing when building schools?
A. Using the latest technology.
B. Avoiding workspace design.

? ? ? ?A picture is worth a thousand words, as the saying goes. Professional photographer Aaron Josefczyk lives by that statement every day.
Josefczyk photographs sporting and political events. He also works on company and school projects. His assignments (任务) sometimes involve (涉及) travel.?“I’m very lucky to get paid for what I enjoy doing,”?he said.
As a photographer for Reuters, an international news company, Josefczyk covers events in Ohio. He is also a photographer for Lifetouch, a photography company that specializes in school photos.
Josefczyk’s favorite assignments are the ones involving sports. He often covers the games of Cleveland’s three professional sports teams, the Cavaliers, Browns, and Indians, as well as professional golf events. The idea of turning recycled plastic bottles into clothing is not new. During the last five years, a large number of clothing companies, businesses, and environmental organizations have started turning plastics into fabric (织物) to deal with plastic pollution. But there’s a problem with this method. Research now shows that microfibers (超细纤维) could be the biggest source of plastic in the sea.
Dr. Mark Browne in Santa Barbara, California, has been studying plastic pollution and microfibers for 10 years now. He explains that every time synthetic (合成的) clothes go into a washing machine, a large number of plastic fibers fall off. Most washing machines can’t collect these microfibers. So every time the water gets out of a washing machine, microfibers are entering the sewers (下水道) and finally end up in the sea.
In 2011, Browne wrote a paper stating that a single piece of synthetic clothing can produce more than 1,900 fibers per wash. Browne collected samples (样品) from seawater and freshwater sites around the world, and used a special way to examine each sample. He discovered that every single water sample contained microfibers.
This is bad news for a number of reasons. Plastic can cause harm to sea life when eaten. Studies have also shown that plastic can absorb other pollutants.
Based on this evidence, it may seem surprising that companies and organizations have chosen to turn plastic waste into clothing as an environmental “solution.” Even though the science has been around for a while, Browne explains that he’s had a difficult time getting companies to listen. When he asked well-known clothing companies to support Benign by Design — his research project that seeks to get clothes that have a bad effect on humans and the environment out of the market — Browne didn’t get a satisfying answer. Only one women’s clothing company, Eileen Fisher, offered Browne funding.
5. What has happened during the past five years?
A. Fabric has become much stronger.
B. Plastic pollution has been less serious.
C. Many plastic bottles have been reused.
D. Microfibers have been greatly improved.
6. What does Browne think of washing synthetic clothes?
A. It is adding microfibers to the clothes.
B. It is worsening environmental problems.
C. It is making synthetic clothes last longer.
D. It is doing great damage to washing machines.
7. What can be inferred about Browne’s Benign by Design research project?
A. It has achieved great success.
B. It hasn’t got anything done.
C. It is known to very few people.
D. It is facing some difficulties.
8. What’s the best title for the text?
A. It’s important to learn to recycle

One possible version:
Dear David,???
How are you? In your letter you told me you enjoyed a programme about lions on television. I don’t like animal programmes very much. I don’t watch television very often. But I watch a Chinese reality show Keep Running every Friday evening. I think it is really interesting. I also watch the news sometimes. Actually I prefer to watch films. Recently I watched a film called Children of Heaven. It tells the moving story of two children and their adventures over a lost pair of shoes. Have you watched this film?
I’m looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Hua
