The mind of an elephant should not be?underestimated. They are intelligent animals born with both excellent memory and artistic talent. Elephants eat about 495 pounds of vegetarian food a day. They spend about 16 hours a day eating, but must walk about 4 miles a day in search of food. The average (通常的) elephant lives about 70 years, and its sharp memory allows it to remember places where it has found food as long as 30 years earlier, even as a baby.
In an elephant's travels, it comes across other elephants also looking for food. Some elephants are friendly, and some are not so nice. Elephants remember every elephant they have ever met. They can even recognize an elephant they perhaps haven't seen for 30 years. They immediately remember whether this elephant is an enemy or a friend.
When elephants are not searching for food, they sometimes produce art in the sand with their trunks (象鼻). They seem to enjoy just relaxing and painting in the sand. One day, an elephant zoo-keeper noticed this and gave an elephant a paint brush filled with red paint to see if the elephant would paint on a canvas (画布). Sure enough, it did, and since then elephants in most zoos have been given paint brushes, paints, and canvases. The resulting abstract (抽象的) art has been sold for high prices around the world. The money goes to support feeding the elephants in the zoos. Most felt that the elephants were only capable of painting abstracts. However, they have been trained to paint trees, flowers, and other things in nature. This has enabled us to understand “elephant genius” even more.
24. What does the underlined word “underestimated” mean?
A. Underdeveloped.? ??????

Scientists at the University of Hawaii at Manoa studied a huge area in the eastern part of the Pacific Ocean known as the Clarion-Clipperton Zone, or CCZ to find and study new sea species (物种).
Diva Amon, a researcher at the University says usually deep sea biologists think there is not a lot living in the deep sea.
“But we found that actually there is quite a lot living there, and so that was really exciting ...” she says.
The group is studying the area because the CCZ, a huge and flat area of seabed, is known to have valuable minerals. The International Seabed Authority (ISA) is allowing the company UK Seabed Resources Ltd. to explore (探索) the area on the?Pacific Ocean?floor for mining. However, the ISA said the company must first complete a biological study of the area before it can begin mining for metals. So, the company employed Amon and her group.
Amon says that more than half of the animals they collected were completely new to science. Her group discovered not only new species, but new genera (动植物的属) of animals.
Biological oceanographer Paul Snelgrove says that finding new species in the deep ocean is common. But, he said, finding a new genus “is really great.”
Amon warns that if mining happens across the whole area, the ecosystem would be largely destroyed. But, she says, we will find the least damaging way to make mining possible.
“There is a sort of scientific push to try and slow things down a bit so that the science can be done before ... so?it?can be done with the least influence possible ...” she says.
“It's likely we are going to develop at least some parts of these deep ocean environments and do it in a way that's going to minimize (最小化) our influence,”?says Paul.
28. What did scientists try to find out in the CCZ?
A. Whether there is life.
B. Whether there are valuable minerals.
C. What sea life exists there.
D. What metals lie under the sea floor.
29. What does Paul say about finding new sea species?
A. It's something unusual.
B. It's nothing to be surprised at.
C. It has a far-reaching effect on science.
D. It proves common species will change.
30. What is Amon's attitude towards mining the CCZ?
A. Careful.?????? ?????????????
B. Doubtful.?
C. Unsupportive.?????
D. Uninterested.
31. What does the underlined word “it” in the text refer to?
A. Mining.
B. A scientific push.
C. Finding the least damaging way.
D. Developing the ocean environments.

This journey began this morning almost an hour later than I had planned, although I had completed my packing before eight o'clock. I was quite clear about the fact that once I left, my house would stand empty for probably the first time since the day it was built. It was a strange feeling and perhaps explains why I was leaving so late, walking around the house many times over, checking one last time to see that all was in order.
It is hard to explain my feelings once I did finally set off. As I drove further and further from the house, I found the surroundings (周围的事物) grow unrecognizable. I began to have a feeling of unease mixed with excitement. I took a turning and found myself on a road circling the edge of a hill. I could sense the steep (陡峭的) drop to my left. I felt a sense of alarm that I was perhaps not on the correct road at all, but speeding off in the wrong direction into a wilderness. It was only the feeling of a moment, but it caused me to slow down. And even when I was sure I was on the right road, I felt forced to stop the car a moment to think carefully.
I decided to step out and stretch (伸展) my legs a little. On the one side of the road, thickets and small trees rose sharply, while on the other I could now see the distant countryside and a town nearby.
I walked a little way along the roadside, when I heard a voice behind me. Until this point I had believed myself quite alone and I turned in some surprise. Sitting on the large stone was a thin, white-haired man. He called to me again and signaled me to join him. For a moment, I took him for a homeless man, but then I saw he was just some local man enjoying the fresh air and summer sunshine, and saw no reason not to do so.
32. Why did the author set off later than planned?
A. He repeatedly checked the house.
B. He was feeling sad about leaving the house.
C. Packing his belongings took longer than expected.
D. There was no one to help him get everything ready.
33. What caused the author to start driving more slowly?
A. The road had become steep.
B. He realized he was driving too fast.
C. The beautiful scenery attracted him.
D. He suddenly feared that he might get lost.
34. When the author walked out of his car, he _____.
A. didn't expect to see anyone
B. didn't want to speak to anybody
C. didn't know there was a town nearby
D. couldn't see anything because of the trees
35. What was the author's attitude to his trip?
A. He just wanted to finish it.
B. He felt unable to continue it.
C. He regretted having started it.
D. He had mixed feelings about it.

The Art of Conversing
In a world of 6.5 billion opinionated people, arguments are sure to happen.??36??But arguments can often lead to positive change — if you argue correctly.
Argue well
?37??In?a healthy argument, one's own goal should be to make the problems clear, to communicate the upset behind the problems, and to really move toward a solution. The minimum goal should be to preserve (维护) the relationship well enough to keep communication alive.
What not to do
Nothing kills a healthy argument like a personal attack, and personal attacks are a big no-no if you want an argument to end positively. For example, while I was making a public speech, someone interrupted (打断) and then corrected me.??38??I completely lost my temper (脾气), attacking that person directly and personally. Clearly I shouldn't have done that.
Don't be afraid of the heat
It's true that personal problems must be left at the door.??39??Conflict (冲突) is acceptable in an argument as long as you stick to the subject. Attacking the other person is not useful. That kind of argument closes down the willingness on both sides to keep talking.
?40??If you do find yourself in the thick of one, listening with an open mind can bring about a quick end to the argument and perhaps a positive solution.
A. I later ended up in an argument.
B. Many people see arguments as a bad part of life.
C. Learning how to voice a different opinion works.
D. Unpleasant arguments are just around the corner.
E. But that doesn't mean arguments won't get heated.
F. There certainly is such a thing as a “healthy argument”.
G. By actively listening, many arguments can be avoided.

The first time I went to the zoo was several years ago, with parents. Yesterday I went to the zoo with some classmates. Arriving here, we got a guidebook and started walking round a zoo. We all got pretty exciting about visiting the animals. But something in their eyes made me to think they might enjoy live in the wild rather than be kept in a cage. One classmate might have guessed what had come in my mind, as he tells me at least in this way we had a good chance to know more about the animals. I don't know. Maybe some days there will have a better way to see and study them.

选做题
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。
A
Alice Finch's work of?Hogwarts?Castle?is huge. It took her a year to construct (建造). And it's built, completely, out of Legos. About 400,000 pieces, to be exact.
A former middle-school teacher who lives with her family on?Mercer Island,?Wash., Finch is an AFOL: Adult Fan of Lego. Her Hogwarts “build” — as AFOLs call it — won Best in Show and the People's Choice award at BrickCon 2012, the annual Seattle-area exhibition for those who love Lego.
The following year, she teamed up with fellow builder David Frank to create Rivendell, a fanciful 200,000-brick description of the Elven outpost in Tolkien's series of books. The result, so colorful and beautiful it seems to have grown from the earth, was also a prizewinner.
Finch said that she enjoyed Lego as a child, but didn't make anything specialized until recent years. The Hogwarts build grew from reading the Harry Potter books with her sons, and from her longtime interest in architecture. Her father was an architect, and Finch said that she's always looking for architectural details while traveling.
“The difference between a great builder and an amazing builder is the level of detail,” she says.
Finch, who teaches Lego camps for children, hopes that her visibility (引人注目) as a Lego master will inspire more girls to get creative with the bricks. When the Hogwarts build appeared in public for the first time, she said,“People were confused and surprised that a woman had done this.”
Going public with her work, in the film and in public events like BrickCon, wasn't her original intention.?“It's a creative process (过程) that I enjoy doing ... not something I do for recognition,”?she says, but she knows that her visibility might be inspiring.
“If girls see a woman doing it,”?she says,?“it plants the seed (种子) that they can do it.”
As Finch's detailed builds show, there's no telling what might happen when you combine a pile of bricks, the gift of space and time and a creative imagination.
“Lego has a kind of language of its own,” Finch says, smiling. “You communicate by building together.”

At a school in North Carolina, Monica Mitchell-Giraudo, a French teacher, instructs 19 sixth-graders to gather (聚集) into a circle.
“Okay, everyone, let's take a few mindful breaths, and think about our gratitude (感激) for Amy, who brought us apples for snack today,”?says Monica.?“What do you notice?”
“I notice my stomach is already growling (做隆隆声),”?laughs Ben.
“My mouth is watering,” says David.
Next, the students hold and examine the apples. They pick up the fruit and feel it. Then they bring the apples to their noses, using their sense of smell to enjoy the flowery smell of their snack before taking the first juicy bites.
“Excellent, class,” says Monica. “Before you eat the apple, ask yourself whether or not you're hungry. Remember, you don't have to eat if your body isn't giving you a hunger signal.”
These students are learning a practice called?“Mindful Eating”, which builds the children's awareness (意识) of important physical signals like hunger and fullness.
The positive feedback from the children shows how much these newly learned life skills are helping them.
“Mindful eating helps me think about the food that goes into my body,” says Jamie, a student in Monica's class. “I can make better and healthier food choices.”
Unfortunately, these kinds of courses are in short supply because many educators believe that social and emotional programs are too expensive or time-consuming (耗时的). To save costs and reduce staffing problems, prevention programs like The Body Positive are brought into the schools. The program teaches a series of self-exploration exercises that help educators examine their feelings and attitudes about food so that they can pass on these messages to their students, too.
Kathy Laughlin, director of counseling at San Domenico High School, is a fan of the training. “Since we began the program, I have not seen as many girls with problems related to body hatred,” she says. “Mindful eating practice is one of the best ways to help students develop a healthy mind and body connection — one which will help them for years to come.”
6. What did Monica ask her students to do as soon as they were gathered?
A. Express thanks to Amy.
B. Feel a need for the food.
C. Share their eating experiences.
D. Think about the state of hunger.

I can’t remember a time when my bedroom didn’t have a bookshelf. From Dr. Suess to Mother Goose, I had all kinds of books that progressed in size as I got older.
My earliest memory of books was sitting on my bed at night with my mom reading to my older brother and me from C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, or Madeleine L’Engle. And my first beloved book that was all mine was a children’s book about being a chosen child. As an adopted child, this book helped me learn that my family was my very own because they chose me. As I got older, the books got thicker and more difficult. The first set of books I ever bought with my own money was L.M. Montgomery’s?Anne of Green Gables.
When in elementary school, there was a book catalog (目录) that would come out. We could take it home and have our parents help us order new books. Then the books would be sent to the school. There was nothing better than getting my little bag of books.
My love for science fiction was deepened by my older brother’s love for it. Beyond being the person to introduce me to?Star Trek?and?Doctor Who, it was his copy of?The Sword of Shannaraby Terry Brooks that got me really interested in science fiction.
I read classics in high school. The first time I had the thought that I wanted to be a writer was after reading Edgar Allan Poe’s work. And his use of words floored me. I remember using his word “phantasmagorical” for a senior paper. Yeah, it’s no wonder I ended up an English major and English teacher passing on my love for the written word and the books students could hold in their hands.

The early life of the green sea turtle (海龟) is full of danger. Only one in 1,000 baby sea turtles survive to adulthood. From its home in the sand, it breaks its egg with an egg tooth. Its mother is not there to help it. Instead, it is greeted by crabs, coyotes, and dogs waiting to eat it for dinner. To survive, the baby turtle must hide in the sand until night. Then, it moves slowly to the sea.
The small turtle must swim hard to reach the ocean waters. In the sea, it tries hard to find food. It must also keep itself from being food for fish.
As dangerous as the sea turtle’s life is in the natural world, its most dangerous enemies are humans. The rubbish left by humans in the ocean causes problems for the small green sea turtle. A little turtle might eat a piece of plastic (塑料) in the sea. It might also eat oil on the ocean’s surface. Young turtles also get caught in fishing nets. There are laws against hunting sea turtles. Still, many are hunted, both for their meat and for their shells (壳). All of these dangers must be prevented.?
Sea turtles that do survive to grow into adulthood go through many changes. For example, adult green sea turtles weigh about 500 pounds. They stop eating jellyfish and other meat and eat only plants. Around the world, support is growing for electric cars. Car makers are producing more electric cars with a longer range (距离) and lower prices. Some European countries plan to be all-electric by 2040 or sooner. However, there are a lot of difficulties, including one practical consideration for customers: If they buy electric cars, where will they charge (充电) them?
Public charging stations are not built evenly (均匀地) around the world. Places with lots of support from governments, like China and the Netherlands have thousands of public charging stations. But in many places, there are not many public chargers. That’s a problem for people who need to drive further than the 200 miles or so that most electric cars can travel.
This situation worries many potential (潜在的) electric car owners.?“If I can’t charge, there’s no way for me to have an electric car as my primary transportation,”?says Solie, who works far from his home.
Mr. Romano, the CEO of ChargePoint, says workplaces should have around 2.5 chargers for every employee and stores need one for every 20 electric cars. Highways need one every 50 to 75 miles, he says.
Luckily, car makers and governments are pushing to fill the gaps (差距). The number of chargers grew by 72 percent to more than 322,000 last year, the International Energy Agency says. BMW, Daimler, Volkswagen, and Ford are building 400 fast-charging stations in Europe.
But there are?pitfalls. There are different types of charging stations, and no one knows the exact mix drivers will finally need. A store might spend $5,000 for a charger, which provides a car with 5 to 15 miles of range in 30 minutes. But once most cars get 200 or 300 miles per charge, slow chargers are less necessary.
32. What prevents potential customers from buying electric cars?
A. The long-time charging.
B. The power problem.
C. The safety.
D. The price.?????????????????????????????? ???
33. What is Solie’s attitude toward buying electric cars?
A. Tired. ????????????????????
B. Hopeful.
C. Supportive.???????
D. Uninterested.
34. What do Mr. Romano’s words suggest?
A. There is a great need for chargers.
B. The government should take action.
C. Car makers will have a bright future.
D. Electric cars are becoming less popular.
35. What does the underlined word “pitfalls” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Dangers. ????????
B. Problems.
C. Advantages.?????????????

February was a hard month for Internet-connected toys.
First, Germany stopped the sale of My Friend Cayla. The German government believed that hackers (电脑黑客) could use the talking toy to get information on kids.
Then U.S. computer users learned that CloudPets, made by Spiral Toys, had a problem. The toy’s Internet connection allows users to send and receive voice messages. Computer experts discovered that CloudPets’ database (数据库) was not safe. The private information of more than 820,000 users was at risk of being stolen.
Computer hackers didn’t only hit toys. Many big companies in the U.S. have also been hacked. The hits showed emails, card numbers, fingerprints, and other private information. Experts are looking for ways to fight hackers. Kids are joining the fight and getting ready to lead.
The organizers of CyberPatriot see the advantages of getting an early start in cybersecurity (网络安全). In 2016, 69,000 students took part in the cyber-education program. Its goal is to encourage kids to make achievements in cybersecurity and in STEM fields, including science and technology.
CyberPatriot’s central project is the yearly National Youth Cyber Defense Competition. Winners receive some money to help pay for their education. The competition takes place over several months. Student teams manage the computer network at a fictional company. They must find and fix its security problems. From April 3 to 5, the nation’s top teams competed in the finals, in Baltimore, Maryland.
Team Error 37, from Summit Lakes Middle School, in Lee’s Summit, Missouri, won the middle school group. “There will be a lot of jobs that require cybersecurity knowledge,” said team member Keenan Curp, 13.
Arjun Pratap Ghoshal, 13, also competed in Baltimore. He was the leader of a team from Oak Valley Middle School, in San Diego, California. “We have to teach kids around us about cybersecurity,” he says, “so that we can prevent harmful hacking.”

Imagine a world where everyday objects produce their own light. And it could happen!
Scientists are looking to nature’s bright lights for ideas. Bioluminescent organisms (发光的生物有机体) produce light and about 80% of them are found in the ocean. The ability to give off light serves a number of purposes. Some organisms use their light to communicate, others to hunt, or to mate.
Bioluminescent organisms are encouraging discoveries. “It’s quite an exciting time in bioluminescence,” Scientist Waldenmaier says. “The possibilities are endless.”
Lighting discoveries
Gary and Kathy Luker are research scientists at the University of Michigan. They use bioluminescence as a tool in medical research. The Lukers have turned to bioluminescent organisms like click beetles to understand how some cancer cells (癌细胞) work. In one experiment, the scientists make healthy cells show one color and harmful cells another. “The click beetle has two light organs — a green and a red one,” Kathy Luker says. “We just copy what the beetle does and put?that?into the cells we are studying.”
Green light
Bioluminescence isn’t naturally found in plants. But a company called Gleaux is creating plants that light up. “People have dreamed about this for many years,” says the company’s founder, Alexander Krichevsky. He is working toward a future in which plants giving off light take the place of indoor lights and shining trees line highways. The future of farming looks bright too, says Krichevsky. Plants might give off light to let farmers know when they need water or they are ready to be picked.
That natural light
The French company Glowee is lighting the way with bioluminescence. The company has developed technology to light store windows and street signs using bioluminescent bacteria (细菌). Glowee hopes its inventions will one day take the place of electric lighting. “This could be a great way out for the future of energy and light,” says Glowee’s founder, Sandra Rey. Glowee’s products only last about three days. Once the light disappears, the company uses the bacteria again for light.
