As a child, Sue Hendrickson loved to look for buried treasure. She would also walk along streets, looking at the ground and hoping to find interesting things.

WWOOF organizations connect people who want to live and learn on organic (有机的) farms with people who are looking for volunteer (志愿者) help. WWOOF hosts (主办方) offer food, housing and opportunities to learn about organic ways of life. Volunteers (WWOOFers) give hands-on help in return. They help on the land for 4-6 hours a day. WWOOF is a network of national organizations. If you want to have hands-on experience, learn and share organic ways of living then WWOOF might be for you.
Volunteers
Usually you live with your host and are expected to join in the day to day activities. In most countries the exchange is based on 4-6 hours' work in exchange for a full day's food and housing. You may be asked to help with a variety of tasks like gardening, planting, cutting wood, packing, milking, feeding, wine making, cheese making and bread making. The length of your stay at the farm is discussed directly between you and your host. Most WWOOF visits are between one and two weeks, though some may be as short as two or three days or as long as six months.
The first step of your WWOOFing experience is to choose the place you are going and join the right WWOOF organization. As a member you will be able to receive information about farms in your chosen country and start making plans.

If you have an organic farm or garden, you might consider opening your home to WWOOFers. Our volunteers can provide an extra pair of hands to help with various projects you are busy with. I think that teenage years should be the best in everyone life because you have few problems than adults. It all started with a simple request. In 2006, Cathryn Couch was working as a chef (厨师), making home-delivery meals for customers. Parents, you’ve worked hard to teach the most important life lessons to your little ones. You ask them to say “please” and “thank you”, you remind them to eat with a knife and fork, and you never, ever let them pick their nose in public. But there’s one important lesson that you might be forgetting — and it’s nothing you can cover in a simple conversation.
According to a new study in the journal Science, babies receive more than genetics (基因) from their parents. They can also get certain good qualities (品质), such as persistence (坚持不懈), by watching how adults behave. Researchers at Massachusetts Institute of Technology say that babies who watched an adult struggle (努力) with and then triumph over something were more likely to show persistence themselves when given a new task.
The team at MIT studied 262 babies between the ages of 13 and 18 months. They placed them in one of three situations. In the first one, the lead researcher struggled with two different toys’ problems before solving them, letting the baby watch while she did so. The second time, the researcher solved the problems but did not struggle with them. And for the third scene, she did not do anything.
After each scene, the researcher left a small musical toy with the child. She showed the baby that it could play music but did not teach them how to turn it on. The babies who had watched the researcher struggle discovered and pressed the toy’s button (按钮) a much greater number of times than those in the last two groups. In other words, the babies did not copy what they had watched; they learned not to give up, instead.?

Princess Cruise Lines has agreed to pay a record $40 million fine for discharging (排放) waste off the coast of England and trying to cover up its “deliberate (故意的) pollution of the seas.”
According to the U.S. Department of Justice, the company’s Caribbean Princess ship had been making illegal discharges through a piece of equipment known as a “magic pipe (管子) ” since 2005, one year after it was placed in service.
The agreement announced Thursday relates to an event off the coast of England on Aug. 23, 2013, when the Caribbean Princess discharged “oily waste” from shop machinery into the ocean. A newly employed engineer reported the event and stopped his work when the ship reached Southampton, England.
The fine is the largest one ever paid for a deliberate discharge by a cruise ship. “The pollution in this case was the result of more than just bad actors on one ship,” Assistant Attorney General John C. Cruden said. “It is not in line with Princess’s culture and management. This is a company that knew better and should have done better. Hopefully other companies can learn a lesson from the result of this case.”
Princess Cruise Lines said it was very disappointed about the inexcusable actions of the employees who broke the policies when they discharged untreated waste water into the ocean.

But then the band started playing that old Vern Gosdin song “Chiseled in Stone”. “Our song,” said Johnny to Mary. They turned around for one more slow dance. Can you imagine a world without balloons? No balloons on your birthday. No balloons to cheer you up when you’re sick. No balloons at parties. What a sad, boring world that would be!
But some people are saying it’s time for balloons to go the way of the dinosaurs. They say balloons are bad for the environment and dangerous to animals. They are wrong.
“There is little evidence to show that balloons are a danger to sea animals,” says Dan Flynn, chairman of the Balloon Council, an organization of balloon makers and sellers. According to Flynn, the real problem is plastic rubbish — things like bags and bottles.
Still, even if balloons were a threat to wildlife, the solution wouldn’t be to ban all balloons forever. The solution would be simply to stop letting them go and dispose of (处理)? them properly instead: Let the air out of them and cut any strings (细绳) into small pieces before throwing the balloons away. Balloons placed in the rubbish bin are unlikely to end up being eaten by sea animals or as rubbish on beaches. Proper disposal would also solve the problem of balloons getting caught in power lines.
Another way to ensure your balloons don’t harm the environment is to choose ones made of latex rather than mylar. Latex is biodegradable (可生物降解的). Mylar — a plastic material — is not.
Then there is the so-called problem of helium (氦). Yes, there isn’t a lot of helium. But only 5 to 7 percent of the world’s helium supply is used for balloons, according to the Balloon Association, a British trade organization. This amount of helium is so small it is not worth worrying about.
The Balloon Council has been working with buyers and sellers to make sure everyone knows how to use and dispose of balloons responsibly.
“Balloons bring people so much joy,” says Flynn. “There aren’t a lot of dangers. When they are properly used, they are very safe.”
