The?Golden Gate?Bridge?was the longest bridge in the world from 1937 when it was completed until the?Verrazano?Narrows?Bridge?was built in?New York?in 1964. Today, it is still the ninth longest bridge in the world.
For many years before the?Golden Gate?Bridge?was built, the only way to get across?San Francisco?Bay?was by ship. And by the early twentieth century the Bay was crowded because of them. In the 1920s, engineer and bridge-builder Joseph Strauss believed that a bridge should be built across the?Golden Gate?to solve the problem.
Many groups went against him, each for their own selfish (自私的) reasons. Besides, the enginee- ring challenge was also huge?—?the Golden Gate Bridge area often has winds of up to 60 miles per hour, and strong ocean currents (洋流) sweep below the surface. If all that weren't enough, it was the middle of the Great Depression, and funds were hard to find.
Strauss didn't give up, and the Golden Gate Bridge history began when San Francisco officials approved (批准) $35 million to build the Golden Gate Bridge. After the artistic design and red color were chosen, construction work began in 1933. The?Golden Gate?Bridge?project was completed in 1937, an important date in?San Francisco?history.
Strauss was a pioneer in building safety. The?Bay?Bridge, which was being built at the same time cost 24 lives while the?Golden Gate?Bridge?cost only 12, a great achievement in a period of time when one man was killed on most construction projects for every million spent.
28. What do we know about the?Golden Gate?Bridge?
A. It remained the world's longest bridge for 30 years.
B. It was the widest bridge worldwide when completed.
C. It is of the same age as the?Verrazano?Narrows?Bridge.
D. There are only 8 bridges worldwide longer than it now.
29. Why did Strauss want to build the?Golden Gate?Bridge?
A. To prove his artistic ability.
B. To build the world's longest bridge.
C. To solve traffic jams at?San Francisco?Bay.
D. To make crossing?San Francisco?Bay possible.
30. What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A. The necessity for building the bridge.
B. The hard time of the Great Depression.
C. The bad weather in the?Golden Gate?Bridge?area.
D. The difficulties in building the?Golden Gate?Bridge.
31. Which of the following words can best describe Strauss?
A. Honest.???????????????????
B. Patient.????????????
C. Warm-hearted. ???????

The Model T, created by Henry Ford, changed the way Americans live, work and travel. On October 1, 1908, the Ford Motor Company introduced the Model T. The car came only in black. But at $850, it cost about half as much as other cars on the market. Henry Ford's great improvement in an automobile assembly line (汽车装配线) made the Model T the first car to be affordable for most Americans. For the first time car ownership became a reality for normal American workers, not just the wealthy.
Assembly-line production allowed the price of the touring car to be lowered from $850 in?1908 to less than $300 in?1925. At that time half of all the cars in the?United States?were Model Ts. Even before it lost favour to larger and more powerful cars, the Model T, known as the “Tin Lizzie,” had become an American symbol, basically realizing Ford's goal to “democratize?the automobile.”
Henry Ford founded the Ford Motor Company in 1903. At first, Ford built only a few cars a day. Because demand (需求) for Model Ts was so high, Ford developed a way to make more of them without increasing cost. In 1913, he invented a moving assembly line. Workers stood in front of a conveyor belt (传送带), and each completed one step in putting the cars together.
Ford's method of mass production changed life in the?U.S.?More people could travel. Highways grew.
The Ford Motor Company stopped making the Model T in 1927. But the automotive lifestyle had taken hold of?America. Today, the race is on to make cars more efficient and to find green energy to power them. Will inventors with Ford's creativity bring the next revolution (革命)?
32. What made the Model T affordable for common American people?
A. Its old style.
B. Its small engine.
C. Comparatively cheap car labor.
D. A more developed method of production.
33. What can we learn about the Model T?
A. It had many different colors.
B. It was mostly owned by the wealthy.
C. It became cheaper from 1908 to 1925.
D. It was the first car built by Americans.
34. What does the underlined word “democratize” in Paragraph 2 mean?

B. Develop.
C. Change. ?????????????????
D. Sell.
35. What is the author's attitude to the Model T?

Megan
I'm based in Bahrain, and I have a small apartment there. The thing I like most about my job is the chance to meet people from different cultures. I spend a lot of my time handing out food and drinks and clearing up people's rubbish. I certainly don't feel very excited about going home at two in the morning!
Frank
I enjoy playing around with word puzzles (字谜). So I sent a couple in to a local newspaper and was really surprised when they asked me for more. I suppose it is a strange way to spend your day surrounded by dictionaries and books, but it's great because I'm just doing what I like.
Gemma
I love music and listen to it all the time, even when I go jogging. As for my job — you really can't be shy in this kind of work, and you have to be very patient because sometimes we practise for hours before we get it right. When we're on tour, we work for several weeks with no breaks and you can get really tired. For relaxation, whenever I get a holiday, I go straight to a sunny beach.
Raoul
Most people think I spend my day chopping (切) vegetables and washing dishes, but it's not that simple. I have to be really careful with the food and keep everything very clean. The biggest problem is my boss?—?he shouts at me all the time?—?even, for example, if I forget to wash up one plate. Actually, I'm hoping to find a new job soon because I don't get much time off.

In January 2012, two seventeen-year-old Canadian students, Mathew Ho and Asad Muhammad, put a LEGO man in the Earth's upper atmosphere (高层大气).
The two worked on the project every Saturday for four months. They decided to spend no more than $500. They bought a weather balloon?—?the kind of balloon that scientists use to get information about the weather. They bought some helium (氦气). Then, they made a parachute (降落伞). They bought three second-hand cameras and a video camera. They made a very light box to hold the cameras and a cell phone with a GPS. The GPS was to let them follow the balloon on its trip. They fixed the parachute and the box to the weather balloon. Then they added a LEGO man carrying a Canadian flag. They didn't want the wind to blow their balloon out of Canada and into the US, so they waited for the right wind conditions.
Then one Saturday morning, the weather was just right. The boys hurried to a football field and worked quickly. They turned on the cameras and the cell phone's GPS, filled the balloon with helium and let it go. They watched the GPS signal? (信号) on Mathew's iPad.
After a while the GPS signal stopped and the boys went home. About ninety minutes later, the signal started again. The LEGO man was coming back to the Earth! The boys found him in a field 122 kilometers away. When they saw the video movie and the 1,500 photographs, they shouted with excitement! The LEGO man had traveled up about 24 kilometers. Behind him, the pictures showed the curve (曲线) of the Earth and the blackness of space.

The first lighthouses (灯塔) in America, which were built in the 1710s, used wood or coal as fuel. By the mid-1700s, American lighthouses began to use oil-burning lamps (灯). The lamps were lit and then placed in a high place so they could be seen from great distances.
The trouble with using oil lamps was that only a small percentage of the light produced by the lamp could be seen from the sea. Increasing the amount of light meant burning more fuel, which required bringing more oil to the lighthouse. This was a difficult job for the lighthouse keeper.
Many inventors tried different ways to increase the brightness of the light from oil lamps. By the early 1800s, American lighthouses used Argand lamps. Air coming from the base of this lamp made the light brighter. With the addition of a reflector, the Argand lamp became standard in American lighthouses until the 1850s. Ships fifteen miles away could see the light on a clear night.
In 1819, the French government asked scientist Augustin-Jean Fresnel to work on directing more light toward ships. Fresnel, who studied prisms (棱镜), began working on a special lens (透镜) that used many prisms. Fresnel was able to send 80 percent of the light, so ships could see the light from twenty miles away! The new lens was named the Fresnel lens. America began to use the new lens in the 1850s.
Over the years, sources of light continued to change. By the 1870s, lighthouses began to use kerosene fuel, and in 1886, electricity was first used. By the 1990s, many lighthouses started to use solar (太阳的) power. Electricity is still used in lighthouses today, but it is usually produced by solar power.
28. What was a disadvantage of the oil-burning lamp?
A. It might result in fire.?
B. It was not bright enough.
C. It did not work well in bad weather.
D. It might cause harm to lighthouse keepers.

Why are you looking at cheap used cars for sale? More than likely because you want to save money on a car. Maybe you haven't considered why you should buy donated (捐赠的) cars before. If that's the case, now is the perfect time for you to consider donated cars and what they have to offer. A lot of people looking at used cars for sale go right to the local car sellers hoping to save money when they buy a used car. But at the same time, other people are donating their used car to charities. Why don't they sell it to the used car sellers you're going to? They donate used cars for two reasons: Either to help a charity they care about or to help reduce their taxes (税).
The charities that receive these used cars?then sell them to raise money for their organization. Because the used car for sale or auction (拍卖) is donated, unlike a used car seller, the charity doesn't have to pay for it and can therefore sell it more cheaply. That means when you buy donated cars, you help these charities while saving yourself money over buying a used car for sale from a car seller!
Many charities find it difficult to sell these cars on their own so they work with professional auction companies.?DonatedCarDeals.com?is partnered with some of the largest donated car auction groups in the country so we make it easier for you to view, bid (出价) and buy donated cars. When you look to buy donated cars on Donated Car Deals, you'll find you can save up to thousands of dollars on a used car?—?and help out another organization in the process!
Donated cars are located all over the country! Some listed used or donated cars may have additional (额外的) money connected with the sale. Please keep that in mind when deciding your bid amount on the donated car?—or even motorcycle?—?of your dreams!
32. Which of the following is a reason for people donating used cars?
A. They will pay less taxes.
B. They can live on charity.
C. They can't find a local car seller.
D. They have failed to find the right buyers.
33. Why are people advised to buy donated cars?
A. The auction is done by professional companies.
B. The money will go to those in need.

Growing up in London, Ernest Shepard began to draw as soon as he was able to hold a pencil. As a child, Shepard had two big hobbies?—?watching soldiers (士兵) practice, and drawing. He decided on a career (事业) as an artist and was encouraged by his father. After attending a special art school, Shepard entered the Royal Academy Schools, Britain's oldest art school, in 1897 as one of its youngest students, and won two scholarships (奖学金) while there.
While working as a cartoonist for the British humor magazine Punch, Shepard was introduced to A.A. Milne, who was looking for an artist to illustrate (加插图于) his collection of children's stories. Wanting to impress the picky author, Shepard went to great lengths to land the job. He walked around Ashdown Forest to draw its scenery and then showed up unannounced at Milne's house with his drawings, winning the acceptance of Milne.
Shepard and Milne are best known for creating the popular?Winnie-the-Pooh?books — starring a honey-loving teddy bear and his friends. A skilled cartoon artist, Shepard's black-and-white illustrations brought the silly adventures of Hundred Acre Wood to life. He was known for his pen-and-ink drawings. He added light and movement with lines, dots (点), and curves.
For nearly a century,?Winnie-the-Pooh?(1926) and?The House at Pooh Corner?(1928) have been favorites among millions. Throughout the rest of his career, Shepard illustrated books for many leading authors of the period, including several for Kenneth Grahame. He remained busy as an illustrator his whole life and even tried writing two children's books of his own in his mid-eighties. Though the books didn't gain much popularity, Shepard was very pleased. Shepard also colored his first line drawings for new editions of?Winnie the Pooh?(1973) and?The House at Pooh Corner?(1974).?The Pooh Story Book?(1976) had new line and color pictures by Shepard.

For a mother and kids at the Philadelphia Zoo, in Pennsylvania, it was a close encounter (遇见) of the frightening kind. Directly in front of them was a Siberian tiger. But the family did not?panic. They laughed. The tiger was in an enclosed (围住的) walkway.
That tiger trail (路径) is part of Zoo360. It has changed the way humans and animals experience the zoo. But Zoo360's bigger influence may come from its effort to change animals' lives in captivity (圈养). Many experts think zoos need much repair work if they're going to last. The Philadelphia Zoo may be the best model for that change.
“Even the best zoos today are based on captivity,” says Jon Coe. He is the zoo designer who invented the Zoo360 Animal Exploration Trail. “To me, that's the big weakness.”
In 1975, when David Hancocks took over as director of the Woodland Park Zoo, in Seattle, Washington, it looked like any other big-city zoo. But within a year, Hancocks asked Coe to rethink how zoo animals are kept. Coe developed a plan that included plants growing naturally, wide open areas, and plenty of light.
Many zoos, however, have difficulty in providing a proper home for animals. Take elephants, for example. A recent study shows how well elephants live when they have social connections and can collect their own food. In 2011, the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) started requiring zoos with elephants to keep at least three of the animals and an elephant scientist on staff. Not every zoo can afford that.
Hancocks has done a lot to shape the zoos we see today. Now he spends more time thinking about their future — and weaknesses.
People are going to zoos in greater numbers than ever. According to the AZA, in 2015, more than 170 million people visited zoos in the U.S. Still, those big numbers will do little to lessen the growing arguments against keeping animals captive.
“Where are we going?” asks Hancocks. “I guess I'm worried.”
5. The underlined word “panic” in Paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to _____.

A. It is the biggest one in the U.S.
B. It will put Zoo360 into practice.
