Module 1 Life in the Future
第二部分: 阅读理解 (共两节,满分40分)
第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。
A
Dear Managing Director,
As you know, money was recently received for improvements to the café, and the Board (董事会) has made some suggestions about how to spend it. The purpose of this letter is to show the reaction of the staff (全体员工) to your ideas and to present some suggestions of our own.
As we understand it, the Board has three main suggestions:
? to repaint the walls and hang curtains (窗帘)
? to buy longer tables and more chairs
? to brighten up the café with plants
We are very happy with the idea of repainting and curtains. This would certainly make the café more attractive. However, we do not feel that there is any need for new tables and chairs. The present furniture is in good condition and because the tables are small, they encourage a friendlier feeling than long tables would. As for plants, we feel the money could be better spent on other things. Our suggestions are:
? to buy a new dishwashing machine. The present machine is of poor quality and doesn't always clean the dishes well.
? to buy a new coffee machine. The present machine breaks down very often and takes a long time to get repaired.
Also, would it be possible to change our servicing company?
? to buy more salt and pepper sets so we have one for every table.
? to buy new staff uniforms (制服). The present uniforms are uncomfortable and unattractive.
We hope that our suggestions will be given serious consideration, particularly those related to the two machines.
We look forward to discussing them with you at a convenient (方便的) time.

Vanessa Berlowitz, who studied science at Oxford University, now works as a producer for the BBC. She has worked on many nature documentaries, including the 2006 BBC program Planet Earth. For this series, she travelled around the world to film the world's greatest mountains.
The job of series producer is very complex. For Frozen Planet, a seven-part series that explores what life is like on the North and South Poles, Berlowitz had to decide when and where to film. She also had to decide how to tell the story. Every day, she helped set up the cameras, which can take hours. With the crew (工作人员), she often spent hours quietly looking or waiting for animals. She talked about the day the crew finally found a polar bear and her cubs (幼崽).
“A mother polar bear was having a hard time finding food for her cubs. But the little cubs were playing, which made her hunt difficult. I was crying with laughter when she put one of the little cubs in a hole so she could hunt. I thought, this is what mothers do!”
Berlowitz is one of very few series women producers. She hopes more women will become producers in the future. She said: “As producers, you do not have to be very physically strong, but you have to be happy to go to extreme areas.”
Berlowitz enjoys seeing new parts of the world and filming things many people have never seen before. But the best part of her work is hearing from the people who watch her documentaries.
“I got a wonderful email from an eleven-year-old girl from Iran. She was so excited that women do jobs like mine. She wants to try and follow my example. She wrote me a beautiful poem, which was about the polar bear film. It made me cry with joy,” she said.
24. What can we learn about Berlowitz's work?
A. It takes time and patience.
B. It always puts her in danger.
C. It needs to be done independently.
D. It has nothing to do with her major.
25. What feeling did Berlowitz express from her observation of bears?
A. Pity.
B. Worry.
C. Fun.
D. Pride.
26. What did Berlowitz say to possible producers?
A. Grow a strong body.
B. Be pleased to go to terrible places.
C. Be prepared to travel around the world.
D. Learn to deal with extreme weather conditions.
27. Why did Berlowitz talk about the Iranian girl?
A. To describe her hope for the little girl.
B. To prove Frozen Planet's huge influence.
C. To explain she set a good example for girls worldwide.
D. To show her audience's positive response means a lot to her.

Bryan Laubscher, one of the world's leading astrophysicists, who study the physics and chemistry of the stars, planets, etc, is developing an invention called the Mars Elevator. To form a picture of this, you may want to imagine the story of Jack and the Beanstalk (《杰克与魔豆》). This is the story of a boy who grew a beanstalk that reached the heavens. Jack climbed the stalk and entered another world. The space elevator is similar but of course much more high-tech and better yet, it is real!
Astrophysicists are designing a steel-like cable (缆绳) that will be connected to a platform (平台) in the ocean. This cable is designed to be pulled up into space, where it will then be connected to a space station. People will be able to travel up and down this elevator by the year 2020. There will be a number of space elevators so that both tourists and businesses can travel into space. To get there, space tourists will simply travel to the nearest ocean elevator entrance. The trip up into space will take about a week. When they arrive, space tourists will be inside a space station and will be able to stay there. There are other alternatives, too. Astronomers think it will be easy to travel from the space station to the moon, where space tourists can stay in a moon hotel — which is now being designed.
The future looks bright for space tourists. It also looks bright for industry and scientists. Mining companies will travel to space to mine elements (元素) that are rare on Earth. Energy scientists will travel to space to set up space solar panels, which will collect a huge amount of energy from the sun and shoot it back to Earth where we can use it to heat our homes and meet our energy needs.
28. What does Jack and the Beanstalk help readers understand?
A. The difficulty of building space elevators.
B. What material space elevators would use.
C. What space elevators would look like.
D. The reason for inventing space elevators.
29. What can we infer about space elevators?
A. They're accepting pre-paid bookings.
B. They'll be available in the near future.
C. They're mainly used for scientific study.
D. They'll offer people a seven-day round trip.
30. What does the underlined word “alternatives” (in Para. 2) mean?
A. Advantages.
B. Purposes.
C. Entries.
D. Choices.
31. What is the author's attitude towards space elevators?
A. Worried.
B. Doubtful.
C. Critical.
D. Positive.

My beautiful new watch had run eighteen months without losing or gaining (走得快). But at last, one night, I forgot to wind it up (上发条) and it stopped running. The next day I stepped into the jeweler's to set it by the exact time, and the head of the shop started to set it for me. Then he said, “She is four minutes slow — regulator (调节器) wants pushing up.” I tried to stop him — tried to make him understand that the watch kept perfect time. But no; he calmly and cruelly did the shameful deed.
My watch began to gain. It gained faster and faster day by day. Finally I took it to the watchmaker to be regulated. He forced the watch open, and then said it wanted cleaning and oiling, besides regulating. After this, my watch slowed down to an unbearable degree. I began to miss trains and my dinner.
At last, I took this instrument to another watchmaker. He said the kingbolt was broken. To tell the truth, I had no idea what the kingbolt was. He repaired it, but what the watch gained in one way it lost in another. It would run awhile and then stop awhile, and so on.
So I went with a heavy heart to one more watchmaker. While I waited and looked on I presently recognized in this watchmaker an old acquaintance (熟人) — a steamboat engineer of older days, and not a good engineer, either.
“She makes too much steam and ...” he said.
I gave him a heavy blow on the head and ran away.
My uncle William used to say that a good watch was a good watch until the repairers got a chance to look at it. And he used to wonder what became of all the unsuccessful repairmen, and shoemakers, and engineers, and blacksmiths; but nobody could ever tell him.
32. What did the author say about the jeweler?
A. He made a mistake.
B. He had a quick mind.
C. He had a hearing problem.
D. He was a quiet repairman.
33. After being cleaned, oiled and regulated, the author's watch _____.
A. kept perfect time
B. gained faster and faster
C. was unbelievably slow
D. ran awhile and stopped awhile
34. Why did the author hit the watchmaker on the head?
A. He was a liar.
B. He was talking nonsense.
C. He treated the watch cruelly.
D. He was an old enemy of the author.
35. What did the author learn from his experience?
A. Never get a watch repaired.
B. He should listen to his uncle.
C. Repair work was not an easy job.
D. Unsuccessful people exist in all walks of life.

Who would have thought that there was any connection between a cup of coffee and a bird, butterfly, or even a bat? Such seems to be the case, however, as methods for growing coffee plants have gradually changed over time.
Coffee plants were first discovered growing in Africa hundreds of years ago. The plants grew under a wide cover of forests, which protected the coffee plants' leaves from the burning sun. As coffee was introduced to other countries, farmers would naturally try to grow the plants in the shade (树荫) of tall trees. These trees provided more than shade for coffee plants; they were also home for many species (种类) of birds, insects, and other plants.
Over the past 30 to 40 years, people developed a new kind of coffee plant, one which grows well in open sunlight. Sun-grown coffee produced two times more coffee than shade-grown coffee in the same amount of time and space. As a result, the growing need for coffee makes the sun-grown method appear to be the best way to grow coffee.
However, this newer method has some unexpected results. First, the lack of tree cover leaves the land open to heavy rainfall, which can wash away the soil's nutrients (营养物质). This necessitates an increased use of fertilizers (化肥) and additives, which is likely to create health risks. Second, as forests are taken down to make way for sun-grown coffee plants, native and migratory birds no longer have a home. This is threatening many species, and the effect is now being examined and recorded by ornithologists, who are discovering sharp falls in some species that travel to the northern United States each year. Finally, more pesticides (农药) are used in the sun-grown method, all of which have a bad influence on both the environment and the long-term health of the coffee plants themselves.
Today, as more people recognize the problems of coffee grown in the sun, perhaps they will be willing to pay the higher prices, encouraging coffee growers to return to the more natural method of producing this worldwide product.
1. Under what conditions can coffee plants grow naturally?
A. There is much hot sunshine.
B. There is enough heavy rainfall.
C. There are tall trees around them.
D. There are lots of nutrients in the soil.
2. Compared with shade-grown coffee, sun-grown coffee _____.
A. grows more slowly
B. tastes much better
C. is more expensive
D. is more productive
3. What do ornithologists most probably do?
A. Study birds.
B. Grow coffee.
C. Protect forests.
D. Make pesticides.
4. What does the author want coffee farmers to do?
A. Improve coffee production.
B. Grow shade-grown coffee.
C. Sell coffee at lower prices.
D. Plant a new kind of coffee.
5. The text mainly explains the connection between _____.
A. coffee and forests
B. coffee and sunlight
C. coffee farmers and animals
D. coffee production and the environment

Angels Vet Express is located in Savannah in northern Missouri, but the clinic attracts pet owners from the Kansas City area. Today the clinic treats 100,000 animals every year for much less than the fees private veterinary practices charge.
“The clinic was founded on the idea that no animal should fail to receive care services because the expense is too high,” said Gary Silverglat, the owner of Angels Vet.
It's no surprise Angels Vet has such a huge following. People love their pets, and veterinary care in the U.S. is big business. According to the American Pet Products Association, Americans spent $15 billion on veterinary care in 2014.
The average price in the Midwest for the most basic veterinary procedure (手术) — preventing animals from producing babies — can cost up to $45, according to Silverglat.
At Angels Vet, the cost is $17. Major surgical (外科的) procedures at the clinic can cost a tenth of standard private practice settings, Silverglat said.
The animal clinic's low fees help the average family struggling with veterinary care expenses, according to Jenny Hays, hospital administrator of BluePearl Veterinary Partners in Overland Park.
“Having a choice like Angels Vet Express for our after-hours clients (客户) allows them a way for treatment when financial hardships exist in their family,” Hays said.
Building the business didn't come easy for Silverglat. He has put several million dollars of his own money into his business over 13 years. Silverglat is not a veterinarian. But he has what he calls “a natural love for animals.”
When he and his wife, Lisa, moved to the rural area, they saw a large number of abandoned animals. That's when the entrepreneur decided he and his wife needed to take action.
“We kept a lot of the abandoned animals at first, but then we realized we couldn't keep 27 animals and we needed to start a business to fix this,” he said. “We figured we could do more for the animals by treating them rather than holding them.”
6. Why is Angels Vet so popular?
A. It has a long history.
B. It has first-class vets.
C. It is in a really good location.
D. It provides much affordable care.
7. How does the author explain Angels Vet's advantage over other clinics?
A. By using examples.
B. By describing a process.
C. By studying cause and effect.
D. By presenting research findings.
8. What does Hays think of Angels Vet?
A. It acts quickly to treat animals.
B. It brings hope to certain people.
C. It is suffering financial hardships.
D. It has very humanized opening hours.
9. What caused Silverglat to set up Angels Vet?
A. His job as a vet.
B. His pets' bad experience.
C. The poor veterinary service.
D. The sight of homeless animals.
10. What's the best title for the text?
A. A new treatment
B. For the love of pets
C. An overnight success
D. In the name of business

Self-driving cars might make your future travel a lot more pleasant, but they won’t reduce traffic.
Car producers have mentioned that traffic reduction is one of the many advantages of having self-driving cars on the road. The idea is that self-driving cars will reduce accidents caused by human mistakes. But experts say self-driving cars’ influence on traffic will probably be bad.
Lew Fulton, a co-director at UC Davis’ Institute of Transportation Studies (ITS), said that self-driving cars won’t fix traffic problems unless a pricing system is put in place that discourages self-driving cars. For example, many companies are interested in programming self-driving cars to do something, which could increase traffic on the road, Fulton said.
Massachusetts lawmakers have already suggested introducing a tax (税) on driverless cars. It calls for at least $0.025 per mile.
Traffic jams (堵塞) could also worsen as companies like Lucid Motors try to produce self-driving cars with reclining seats (可躺座椅). People may choose to live farther outside of cities if they can travel in cars that allow them to sleep and relax. But that increases the number of people travelling in and out of cities during rush hour, Fulton said.
Without the cost of a driver, Fulton said he worries self-driving Ubers or Lyfts will become so cheap it will be hard to push people to choose car-sharing services like uberPOOL. “I think it’s going to take some kind of pricing system that discourages cars without a single passenger,” he said.
Some cities have already started programmes that discourage people from taking car trips alone. For example, Chicago and New York City have set up lanes (车道) that single-passenger cars must pay some money to use. That money increases during rush hour.
28. What do car producers think of self-driving cars?
A. They are safe.
B. They are fast.
C. They save buyers money.
D. They increase traffic slightly.
29. What do Massachusetts lawmakers suggest?
A. Introducing a tax on car producers.
B. Increasing the selling price of self-driving cars.
C. Pushing up the running costs of self-driving cars.
D. Calling for drivers to avoid travelling during rush hour.
30. What will happen if there are self-driving cars with reclining seats?
A. More people will live in city centres.
B. People will spend less money on transport.
C. People are likely to travel longer distances.
D. There will be lighter traffic during rush hour.
31. What’s the best title for the text?
A. What cars will we drive in the future?
B. Where will we travel with self-driving cars?
C. How can self-driving cars solve traffic problems?
D. Why self-driving cars could be terrible for traffic?

Ever wondered why fresh fruits and vegetables are the first thing you see in stores or why the bread and milk are so far away? Supermarkets spend millions of dollars researching consumer (消费者) behaviour in order to develop ways to make you buy more in their stores.
CHOICE?magazine takes a look at some of the more common tricks to help you avoid spending more money next time you go shopping.
Experts say turning to the right when you walk into a shop is connected with most people’s preference for using their right hand.
Dr Paul Harrison, expert at Deakin University, says a store’s entry (入口) is not the only important point.?“Research in the US has shown that shoppers who travel in an anti-clockwise (逆时针方向的) direction will spend about two dollars more per trip than clockwise shoppers.”
Research made on shoppers’ in-store movements suggests people travel to some aisles (过道) only. The most common trip to travel in stores is around the outside circle, walking in and out of the aisles as needed. As a result, the ends of each aisle are where the store makes the most money.
When you enter a big supermarket fresh fruits and vegetables are in the first shopping area. Although it’s not wise to first put fruits and vegetables into your shopping basket, this department is set to make the shoppers feel that it’s fresh and healthy. People who use the fresh food areas are also likely to spend more money in the store.
By setting up different “marketplace” areas, it feels as though we’ve visited several different stores where we can get everything we need rather than a single big shop. Each of these areas has different lighting and floor coverings. “It’s all about creating a market-like feel,” says Harrison. “Areas making and selling bread, apart from smelling good, give the impression that the supermarket can be trusted. It’s like they’re saying, ‘You can trust us because we make food.’”
32. Why do people turn to the right when entering a shop?
A. People are mostly right-handed.
B. It’s easier for them to walk in a circle.
C. Fresh food is often placed on the right.
D. Shopping baskets are usually on the right.
33. What does the research in the US find?
A. Most shoppers walk anti-clockwise.
B. Clockwise walkers are often big shoppers.
C. A store’s entry is the most important point.
D. Walking directions influence consuming behaviour.
34. As for aisles, what do supermarket managers most care about?
A. The ends.????????? ????
B. The middle.
C. How long they are.??
D. How wide they are.
35. What impression does a supermarket try to give shoppers by making each area different?
A. It is fresh.
B. It is healthy.
C. It covers a big area.
D. It offers a wide choice.

It’s amazing to consider the fact that today, in western Michigan, people speak more than 120 languages. And it’s even more amazing for me to be part of helping many of those immigrant (移民的) families.
My family and I immigrated to the US in 1975. We’ve lived for years in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Early on, I was interested in becoming a schoolteacher, but language prevented me from doing well on tests. Most of the teachers were very kind, but one, pointing to a low score I had made, laughed at me, “You should have done better; you’ve been here a year already.”
So I took English classes while continuing my education, and I graduated (毕业) in 1980 from Grand Valley State University as a licensed practical nurse. First I worked in a hospital, but I found the work didn’t fit me. Then I worked with the United Nations helping immigrants and, later, worked as an interpreter (口译者) and translator.
Realizing there was a growing need here for my skill set, I started a business to help non-English-speakers. That became my lifework. I employ some 250 interpreters and translators, some of whom are gifted in as many as seven languages.
We are found in any place where words are spoken or written?—?schools, hospitals, workplaces, etc. We mainly provide interpretation and written translation services. Our expertise in rare languages and dialects (方言) sets us apart; we can also translate papers in 30 different languages.
Mercy Health is a health-care provider in western Michigan. It has praised our professionalism and quickness. We provide translation for languages often considered difficult to support — from Albanian and Assyrian to Zaghawa and Zulu. Besides, we can?field?16 languages spoken in Myanmar and American Sign Language.
Especially satisfying is serving the nearby Kentwood Public Schools. Twice a year, we partner with mothers and fathers attending parent-teacher meetings. We deal with 450 such meetings in just two or three days.

A. They should be appreciated.
B. They need some improvement.
C. They should be offered outside Michigan.
D. They should get the attention of the public.
4. What does the underlined word “field” in Paragraph 6 most probably mean?
A. Point out.?????????

Carmakers now allow drivers to make phone calls, use email, and text, etc. Cars used to have a few buttons (按钮). Some cars now have as many as 50 buttons.
“It’s adding complex information at drivers’ fingertips without often considering whether it’s a good idea to put it at their fingertips,” University of Utah professor David Strayer said. That complexity increases the time drivers spend trying to use the systems.
The car industry says that mobile phones are not allowed while driving and navigation devices (导航设备) were not made to be used while driving. But the systems?“are developed to be used in the driving environment and require drivers’ attention that is comparable to turning on the radio, which has always been considered acceptable behavior while driving,” said Wade Newton, a spokesman for the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers.
But Jake Nelson, AAA’s director for traffic safety research, said drivers testing all 30 of the 2017 model year cars took their eyes off the road and hands off the wheel while using the systems. The test drivers touch screens and other technologies to make calls, send texts, turn on the radio, or program navigation all while driving.
Researchers said 23 of the 30 cars were considered “very high” or “high” in terms of the attention they required from drivers. It takes drivers about 40 seconds to program navigation systems. Research made before has shown that drivers who took their eyes from the road for just two seconds double their risk of a crash.
In 2012, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration made voluntary (自愿的) safety guidelines to carmakers. The guidelines suggest that automakers lock out the ability to program navigation systems while a car is moving. However, the ability to program navigation while driving was allowed in 12 cars in the study. The guidelines also suggest carmakers prevent drivers from texting while driving, but three-quarters of the cars tested allow drivers to text while the car is moving.
5. What was David Strayer’s attitude toward the systems?
A. He was interested in them.
B. He was hopeful of them.
C. He was uncertain about them.
D. He was dissatisfied with them.
6. What did Wade Newton say about the systems?
A. They were good choices for drivers.
B. They couldn’t be used while driving.
C. They were unacceptable to the public.
D. They were mainly used for navigation.
7. Which of the following might Jake Nelson agree with about the systems?
A. They were risky but worthwhile.
B. They were quick and easy to use.
C. They saved drivers a lot of money.
D. They increased the risk of accidents.
8. What can be inferred about voluntary safety guidelines?
A. They are quite welcome.
B. They are not properly made.
C. They are not strictly followed.
D. They are very helpful to drivers.

One possible version:
Being a teacher has long been my dream and I believe this dream will come true in ten years.
As a teacher, I will surely be popular among students because I will teach them using proper methods which will make them relaxed while studying. What’s more, I will offer to teach in a school in a mountain area which is in need of teachers. If possible, I will have my own family there and help more children to achieve their dreams.??
