A Lesson Plan from?Life Planning Education: A Youth Development Program
Purpose:?To learn about body language and how to use body language
Materials:?Cards; container
Time:?25-35 minutes
Planning Notes:
?Write the words below on cards:
angry ? disappointed ? shy ? afraid ? sad ? happy ? nervous ? excited ? bored
?Place the cards in the container so volunteers (志愿者) can draw them out one at a time.
Steps:
First make sure that all volunteers know what body language means (expressing feelings through body movement and facial expressions). Go over the following instructions:
?I'll need at least 9 volunteers to play a game similar to charades (猜词游戏).
?The first volunteer will draw a card with a feeling written on it and act out the feeling without using words.
?The rest of the group will guess what feeling is being communicated. Once someone correctly guesses the feeling, the next person in line will draw a card and act out what is written on it, again without words.
?The game will continue until there are no more cards or until time is up.
?????? At last, end the activity using the discussion points below:
?Can you give examples of when someone's body language communicated a different message from what he / she actually said?
?Sometimes one person is offended (冒犯) by another's body language. How can you work to keep that from happening? Answers may include: be honest and direct; match your nonverbal messages to your verbal ones; be aware of (清楚) cultural attitudes toward different kinds of body language.

In March 2008, I told my friends: I was going to shut down my law practice and travel around the world in a year. What's more, I'd do it without taking any flights or making a single advance (预先的) reservation. Some friends offered support and encouragement, while others were doubtful. Once I'd said the words, there was no turning back. It took months to shut down my law practice and get things in order.
There really wasn't any great reason why I wanted to circle the world. I simply wanted to do something fun and different. When I had this plan, I didn't plan for it to lead to a life on the road forever. I was planning to come back, open a new law practice and write a hugely successful book about my travels. Before I left, I started a travel blog, which served as a way to take notes for the book.
Once I set off on my trip in December 2008, I found that travelling without using planes was not easy. It took seven days and nights on trains to get from Moscow to Beijing. Sometimes, I wouldn't see a village or a human being for 10 hours. I had a whole cabin to myself from the second day of that journey.
It turned out that travelling with no reservations was far less difficult than I had imagined. Pulling into a city on a bus with a bag, looking in a guidebook for a few suggestions of accommodations, and then finding an empty room was never a problem.
Soon after I started this adventure (冒险), I realised that my return to the US would be temporary (暂时的). About three months into my journey, I realised that I didn't want to go back to my old life. The world is so wonderful and I wanted to see as much of it as I could.
24. What's the author's friends' attitude to his new plan?
A. Dissatisfied.? ?????????
B. Supportive.
C. Uncaring.????????????????
D. Divided.
25. Why did the author shut down his law practice?
A. He lost interest in law.
B. He followed a friend's example.
C. He wanted to find some enjoyment.
D. He failed to run the business successfully.
26. What was the author's plan for his global trip?
A. Avoiding travelling by air.
B. Finishing a book while travelling.
C. Making careful plans in advance.
D. Finding a place for his law practice.
27. What would the author probably do after returning to the US?
A. Start a travel blog.
B. Go back to his old life.
C. Prepare for another trip.
D. Be a temporary worker.

I was asked by a reader recently why so many animals seem to have pink ears, when their bodies are all different colours? The truth is that most animals actually don't have pink ears. Let us explain.
Near the equator, where the climate (气候) is hot, animals are likely to have darker skin, including on their ears. Think of the African elephant, which has quite dark ears. In colder climates, skin colour is usually lighter and often pink.
Why is skin colour different in different climates? Skin pigmentation, which is what gives skin its colour, can protect against sunburn and skin cancer. When animals live in colder parts of the world, they don't need?it?as much to survive. Light-coloured skin also helps animals stay warmer because it reduces heat loss (丧失), which is useful if you're in a colder climate.
For most animals, the colour of their fur or other body covering has generally developed as camouflage. That allows animals to mix into the background and avoid being eaten, or for predators (捕食者) to remain hidden during hunting. One example is the sandy-coloured coat of the desert fennec fox, which uses camouflage for both hunting and hiding.
By the way, in many animals, ears come in many different shapes and sizes. For example, in bats, the serval (a type of African wildcat) and the fennec fox, the ears are large compared to their body size — this helps them hear better because it allows them to sense more sound waves. Naked mole-rats have tiny ears because they need to dig a lot. Big ears would get in the way. The other downside of big ears is that you can lose a lot of body heat. That's why animals that live in really cold places, like the Arctic fox, have quite small ears.
28. Who is the author most likely to be?
A. A teacher.?? ???????????
B. A librarian.???
C. A zoo worker.?????
D. A science writer.
29. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A. Sunlight.??? ??????????
B. Camouflage.
C. Skin pigmentation.?
D. Light-coloured skin.?
30. Which animal uses its skin colour to protect itself from being eaten?
A. The Arctic fox.
B. The naked mole-rat.?
C. The African elephant.??
D. The desert fennec fox.
31. What do we know about animals living in cold places?
A. They usually have small light-coloured ears.
B. They know ways to store body heat.
C. They need big ears to keep warm.
D. They usually have good hearing.

A mobile phone game will be used to help international students deal with?“culture shock (冲击)”?and university life in Britain.
The game — called C-Shock — is the idea of University of Portsmouth games technology expert Nipan Maniar who, himself, arrived in the UK from India five years ago as an international student. Nipan said the game would act as a “mobile mummy” for new students. “I found some parts of British culture very different to what I was used to in my own culture in India,” Nipan said. “I thought it would be great to have a learning tool to help people deal with the culture shock because if you have not experienced such things before, it's hard to know how to act properly.”
The game follows an international student arriving in the UK for the first time. The aim of the game is to reduce the character's “culture shock” by performing a series of tasks that introduce things and pictures that are related to culture shock.
The game's beginning is a student's first day at university in the UK. The student is shown a map of the university and is given tasks to find certain locations. Clicking on (点击) pictures along the way warns the student about what to expect in terms of culture shock?—?for example, it is acceptable for students to drink alcohol (酒).
“C-Shock could be used to guide students through events such as course registration and help them with basic information like getting to a bank. You could put a whole city guide into the game so the new student can settle into (融入) a new city very quickly,”?Nipan said.
The game is in the final stage of development and is expected to be downloaded from the University of Portsmouth website later this year.
32. What caused Nipan to develop C-Shock?
A. A new student's story.
B. The university's support.
C. His personal experience.
D. His friends' encouragement.
33. What can be learned about the character in the game?
A. He's a “mobile mummy”.
B. He's a student from India.
C. He visits the UK very often.
D. He needs to complete some tasks.
34. What information can C-Shock users get?
A. Maps of city roads.
B. Different types of alcohol.
C. Where to get a tourist guide.
D. How to register for a course.
35. How is Nipan's game going?
A. It's nearly ready.
B. It's in the first stage.
C. It's free to download online.
D. It's been put on the market.

Spider-Man is one of the most successful characters in history.?But the character nearly didn't get off the ground, 95-year-old creator Stan Lee admitted. Lee told reporters in Tokyo he came up with the idea while watching a fly climb a wall and wanted to create a superhero with the same abilities.?“Somehow calling him?‘flyman' didn't sound dramatic enough. What else could he be? Mosquito (蚊子) man? Then I said: Spider-Man. And it sounded so dramatic,”?said Lee.
Lee decided to make his new creation a teenager and give him “many personal problems.” “He won't have enough money, he lives with his aunt who is ill and needs medicine and he has to take care of her. And he's also got to fight the bad people,” he said. He took the idea to his publisher, who said, “Stan, that is the worst idea I have ever heard.” Superheroes have to be adults and cannot have any problems and that's why they are superheroes, said his boss.
Lee was allowed to add a Spider-Man story into the last edition (版次) of a book, though. It became an immediate hit.?“Just for fun, to get it out of my system, I put Spider-Man in that last edition and forgot about it,”?he said.?“A month later, after all the sales numbers were in, my boss came running into my office and said, ‘Remember that character Spider-Man we both liked so much? Let's make him a regular feature.'”
“And that's how Spidey was born,” said Lee. The energetic 95-year-old, who admitted to driving around the streets of Tokyo in a “Super Mario” car the previous evening, was asked how he kept so active. “Being busy is the best medicine there is. As long as you're not busy being a bad person,” he said. As for how he came up with the idea of Spider-Man, the answer was simple: “I'm very lucky.”

One of the newest words on the coffee stage is?“shade (树阴) grown coffee”. Shade grown coffee isn't new. In fact, until only a few years ago, shade grown coffee represented the major coffee beans sold on the world coffee market. The coffee plant is a natural shade lover, growing best in the shade afforded by an overgrowing canopy (树冠) of rain forest plants. That canopy protects the coffee plant from sunlight that reduces its production and kills it.
Shade grown coffee is, however more expensive to grow, at least in the short run. Growing coffee in the shade means that coffee growers also have to spend time working on?the protectors.?It means that less land is left to produce coffee beans. The arrival of technically engineered coffee plants that grow well in the sun represented a major development in coffee industry. Because there was no need to grow shade trees to protect the coffee trees, farmers could use more and more land to grow coffee trees, increasing their productivity and possibly leading to more money for the coffee plantations and farmers.
However, it was not a good idea to move away from shade grown coffee. The sheltering (遮蔽的) canopy provided more than just shade for the coffee trees. Those plants provided shelter for birds and other animals who feed on pests? (害虫). They help to fix nitrogen in the soil, and nitrogen is a natural fertilizer (肥料), which makes plants grow more successfully. The increase in land used to grow sun loving coffee trees also had an unexpected effect on the law of supply and demand (供需). The increased production resulted in a huge amount of coffee beans coming to the market, which brought down prices.
Moreover, most experts agree that shade grown coffee is better in taste than coffee grown in full sun. Plants grown in shade take longer to develop. The slower growing time helps to improve the coffee's taste. You can buy a can of shade grown coffee to replace your usual sun coffee. One cup of coffee a day — it's a small price to pay for a better world.
5. What do we know about shade grown coffee?
A. It has been introduced to the market recently.
B. It was planted in many places.
C. It likes sunlight very much.
D. It is a cost-friendly plant.
6. The underlined part “the protectors” in Paragraph 2 refers to “_____”.

7. What is an advantage of sheltering plants?
A. They bring more money to farmers.
B. They keep a balanced environment.

8. What does the author suggest?
A. Spending less on coffee.
B. Listening to experts' ideas.

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

Dear Sir / Madam,
It worried me a lot when I heard of the plan to cut down St John’s Wood to make a car park for shoppers. Although I agree that the town is short of car parks, this idea would be improper.
In the first place, the wood is an area of natural beauty. There are many ancient trees of an unusual kind. I often go there for a picnic or just to relax at weekends. The wood is, without doubt, a natural home for birds, animals and insects. If the trees were cut down, many species would be lost. Furthermore, the wood is right in the centre of a heavily polluted part of town. The trees help to make the air cleaner. The council (地方议会) says they are worried about global warming, yet they wish to cut down trees which help reduce the build-up of gases that lead to global warming because they feed on carbon dioxide. Besides, that area also suffers (遭受) from high noise levels from passing trucks and the railway line. The trees help reduce the noise levels and do a lot of good to the whole environment.
In my opinion, cutting down the wood would be stupid and pointless. A car park may well attract shoppers to the town and increase the shopkeepers’ trade. However, a beautiful part of our town would be destroyed. I would be very interested in hearing what your other readers think.

?????? I was on an amazing trip with my wife, following Marco, our guide to experience the festival of Qoyllur Rit’i which takes place at 4,300 metres in the southern Andes of Peru, a festival which few foreign tourists ever get to see.
?????? People were travelling to this festival from all over Peru. Among them there were old men, mothers with small babies and children all following the same route. Many of them had horses to carry their food, blankets and tents. Some, like us, had come by bus to Mahuayani, the nearest town, and were walking up from there.
?????? We continued climbing for another hour and a half before reaching the Sinakara valley. There we looked down on a flat plain of open grassland. Right across this flat piece of ground people were putting up tents of blue plastic to protect themselves from the rain. Marco chose a spot to put up our tent.
?????? Not far away in an open market, people were buying tiny houses, cars or small pictures showing a baby or something else. Marco explained that these represented something the pilgrims (朝圣者) wanted. They would take them and bury them in the mountain. This, they believed, would make sure that what they wished for would come true in the year to come.
?????? After dinner we went to bed fully clothed inside our sleeping bags. We were up early the next morning, the main day of the festival. The ukukus, men wearing black masks and bright costumes, had left their tents in the early hours to climb the nearest mountain by the light of the full moon. They stopped to dance from time to time, believing this would bring luck to their villages. As they came down, they were joined by groups of dancers in traditional costumes. They performed wherever there was a space. Although there did not seem to be anyone organising them, the whole festival had become a huge harmonious (和谐的) celebration.

What makes one person have more accidents than another? Most people would say that it’s to do with taking risks. Take fewer risks and you’ll have fewer accidents. But is taking risks really a matter of choice?
Some experts believe that whether or not you take risks in life has a lot to do with your upbringing and, some believe, with your birth order. Parents are often stricter and more careful with their first child, and so first-born children tend to grow up taking fewer risks. Parents are often more relaxed with a second or third child, so these children tend to take more risks.
But why do children tend to have more accidents than adults? During childhood the body grows very quickly. There seem to be periods in these years when our brain and body are at different stages of development. Our arms are longer than the brain thinks they are, so we knock things over; our legs are longer than the brain believes, so we trip over easily.
Besides, the research suggests that the more time a child spends watching TV, the less they are developing their physical co-ordination (协调) skills. It gives the child a false sense of how the world works and of how much danger it contains. If a child doesn’t run around a lot, they don’t begin to understand that the world is full of physical risk.
So, what about adults? Some studies have shown that life in this world is a little difficult for left-handed people. As we know, we live in a right-handed world. Everything — from cars to door handles, from children’s toys to engineering tools and equipment — is made by right-handed people. Therefore, left-handed children and adults are more likely to have accidents because the modern world is not designed for them.
33. Different from the first child, a second one tends to _____.
A. become ill more easily
B. have more accidents
C. learn more quickly
D. make more friends
34. By saying “Our arms are longer than the brain thinks they are”, the author means that _____.
A. it is very easy for children to take risks
B. our brain develops faster than the arms do
C. children often do more exercises than adults
D. it is important to give children a balanced diet
35. Which of the following may have more accidents?
A. Right-handed people.
B. Children who often run around.
C. Left-handed people.
D. Children who seldom watch TV.
