Visitors to?Hot Springs?National Park?in?Arkansas?really follow the crowd. The park contains 47?hot springs. And tourists can take relaxing soaks at a bathhouse in the park that uses warm water from the nearby?hot springs.
Great Springs
At 5,550 acres,?Hot Springs?National Park?is the smallest national park in the?United States. People have been coming to the area for hundreds of years to enjoy its natural hot baths. Starting in the 19th century, several bathhouses that offered baths with spring water opened in the region. Many visitors with illnesses went there, believing that the waters could help cure them.
The area became a national park in 1921. People aren't allowed to take baths directly in the springs. But you can still visit the one bathhouse that remains in operation at the park. You can also drink the spring water from special fountains (喷嘴式饮水器) around the park. And don't worry about burning your tongue. When the water flows from the ground into the pools, it's very hot. But it cools before reaching the park's baths and fountains.?
Home at?Hot Springs
Besides the springs, visitors to the park can also see some pretty cool wildlife. Sounds like there are a lot of ways to have fun at?Hot Springs?National Park!
Fees & Passes

When I was four years old, I got stung (螫) by a bee?—?twice in one week! After that, I had a fear of bees. That's when my parents suggested that I learn about bees instead of being frightened. I read picture books and watched videos about bees, and I learned that bees help make the food we eat because of their pollination (授粉). Take pizza, for example. If we didn't have bees to pollinate tomato plants, we wouldn't have tomatoes for sauce. And we wouldn't have cheese without pollination, either.
The bad news is that bees are struggling (挣扎) to survive. Many are dying. Some scientists think it might be because of chemicals that are used to kill other insects. What would happen if there were no more bees? I wanted to help. I thought,?“What if I make lemonade, sell it, and raise money to help bees?”?I talked to my grandmother Helen. She gave me her recipe (调制法) for lemonade. It came from a cookbook from 1940.
I added honey to her old recipe. That way, I could sell the lemonade and donate (捐赠) some of the money to groups that are helping to save bees. I could also support local beekeepers by using their honey in my product. And I would be educating others on the importance of bees and helping to save them.
My dad showed me how to work out what supplies I needed to buy. At first, I sold lemonade at a stand at a kids' business event. But I wanted to help bees all year round. We talked to a pizza place near where I live. They said they wanted to sell it. Now more than 30 stores sell it, too. This year we sold about 140,000 bottles. I love helping to save bees. It's the sweetest feeling ever.
25. After learning about bees, the author _____.
A. discovered their importance to people
B. developed an interest in insects
C. knew how to deal with them
D. became afraid of them
26. What led the author to start her business?
A. Bees' worrying condition.
B. A cookbook from 1940.

B. Kind and caring.
C. Brave and smart.
D. Strong and patient.

Have you ever been on a student exchange? How useful was it? We asked three people for their opinions.
Ellen
I spent 8 days in?Stuttgart?(Germany) when I was studying for my A levels. I went to school with my exchange partner every day, and spent the evenings with her family. It was great because I had to speak German all the time. However, the most useful thing was that I was focusing (关注) more on communicating with the language, rather than speaking perfectly correct German. It also made me more confident because people could understand what I was talking about. I'd certainly recommend (推荐) it to other students studying languages.
Frank
I went on an exchange with my class for a week in?Madrid?(Spain). Before the exchange, I thought my understanding of grammar was pretty good, but I struggled with listening and speaking. So, it was good to be in a place where I had no choice but to use my language skills. It also helped me learn the kind of Spanish that people use when they're speaking, rather than the language from books. If I had the opportunity, I'd certainly take part in another language exchange.
Alice
I took part in a French exchange. It lasted one week and I stayed with my exchange family in a small town just outside?Paris. I'm quite a shy person, so the first few days were a bit frightening, but then it was fine. I love French and my level has always been good. But the exchange really helped develop my speaking skills, and made me a much more confident person. It felt great to be able to talk with native French people. I also found that everyone who took part in the exchange did a lot better in their end-of-year exams. I would certainly recommend an exchange.
29. What impressed Frank most during his exchange?
A. Local culture.??????????
B. Grammar rules.
C. Natural Spanish.?????????????
D. New language skills.
30. What did?Alice?think about her exchange?
A. It mainly developed her listening skills.
B. It improved her confidence.
C. It taught her exam skills.
D. It was time-consuming.
31. All three people would most likely describe their exchanges as _____.
A. tiring??????????????????????
B. exciting
C. boring?????????????????????
D. helpful

Researchers have solved a long-standing mystery: why rocks on a flat lakebed in?Death Valley?National Park?in?California?sometimes move. Racetrack Playa, the waterless lakebed, is named for the long trails (痕迹) that the rocks, some of which weigh hundreds of pounds, leave in the earth.
What was one of the world's natural wonders now appears to be the perfect combination of rain, wind, ice and sun, scientists have found. Dr. Norris and James M. Norris, a cousin and co-author, actually saw the rocks moving in December when they went to check on the project.
For their study, they used special global positioning system tools, designed by James Norris, in rocks of various sizes brought from outside the park. They were not allowed to move or change anything of the existing playa (盐湖) stones.
No river flows into the playa, though rainwater sometimes fills part of it to a depth of a few inches. It's when this happens, and the nights are below freezing and the days are fine, that the rocks may “sail”, the researchers said. On those occasions, the cold night air leaves a sheet (薄片) of ice only an eighth of an inch thick. Then the warmth of the sun causes the sheet to break up. As more ice melts, some of these lesser sheets have room to move. Driven by light winds, the sheets push up against rocks. The wind drives the water, too, which also helps push the ice to some degree. The movement is slow, no more than about 15 feet a minute.
The movements are?episodic?— the conditions may be just right for a few minutes, and then the sun causes more ice to break and the movement stops. And once the water disappears, it may be years before the rocks move again, even if the playa floods again, because the right temperature and wind conditions may not occur.
32. What do we know about Racetrack Playa?
A. It has flat rocks in the earth.
B. It is covered by rocks.
C. It has some valleys.
D. It is usually dry.?
33. What was the park's attitude to using GPS in the lakebed's stones??
A. It doubted the method.
B. It was against doing so.????
C. It felt it was worth a try.?
D. It thought it was useless.??
34. Why do the stones “sail” according to the Norrises?
A. They are moved by big floods.
B. They move just because of strong winds.
C. They are mainly pushed by wind-driven ice.
D. They move very slowly on smooth ice sheets.
35. What does the underlined word “episodic” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A. Amazingly big.
B. Extremely slow.
C. Happening sometimes.
D. Going on without?stopping.

Crop circles
Crop circles are worldwide phenomena, existing mainly in Europe and?North America, most created during spring or summer night. Flattened crops appear in various patterns that are found in grain fields.
Some people believe that these circles must have been made by aliens who have come to earth. While some people think that the circles might have been designed by local people to develop their tourism and make more money. Though researchers have secretly set up cameras in fields attempting to find out how these circles formed, nothing yet has been recorded.
So far who makes the circles and how they are made remain a mystery.

I come from Santiago, the capital of Chile. There are two separate areas in Santiago. There is an area for the very rich people and there is a part for the poor people. I come from the poor side of the city. The very rich people never cross over to the poor side of the city. But sometimes the poor people save their money and cross over to visit the beach on the rich side.
Dad drove buses. He would leave for work just after 4 am. His pay depended on the number of people who rode in his bus, so he would keep driving until he had made enough money for the day. Mum worked as a barber (理发师). She did not come home until late at night. My brother, sister and I spent a lot of time with my grandparents.
Dad had lived in Australia when he was younger. He told us about the large parks covered with grass. He told us about the beaches that were close to the cities which anyone could visit. Dad thought it would be better if we moved to Australia.
We could only take things that could fit in our suitcases (手提箱). I took clothes and a few special things that reminded (使……想起) me of Chile. I took photographs, a box covered with sand from the beaches of Chile and a traditional toy.
I was very sad to leave my friends and family, especially my grandmother. My grandmother had always looked after me. I didn’t want to leave her, but Dad said that she would come and visit us in Australia one day. When I left, I cut off some of my hair so that my grandmother would remember me.
Flying to Australia was a long journey. We stopped in Argentina and New Zealand before finally reaching Australia.
24. What was the author’s life like in Santiago?
A. He led a hard life.
B. He lived in the wealthy area.

27. How did the author feel about leaving for Australia?
A. He was very excited about it.
B. He was unconcerned about it.
C. He regretted his decision before leaving.
D. He was unwilling to part with his grandmother.

The earliest cars made just for racing were built low to the ground and just wide enough for a single passenger, the driver. In the early 1900s, the drivers were the same people who invented and built the first passenger cars. For example, Henry Ford, founder of the Ford Motor Company, sometimes raced his cars. In 1906, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway was founded by Carl Fisher. On August 19, 1909, the first car race took place at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Twelve thousand were in attendance. In 1911, the first Indianapolis 500 was held there with 40 racers. Finishing in 6 hours and 42 minutes, first-place winner Ray Harroun clocked in at what seemed back in those days an unbelievably high average speed of 74.59 mph!
Over the years, as technology improved, these cars became lighter and faster. There are two kinds of open-wheel racecars, IndyCars and Formula One. IndyCars are almost exactly identical (完全相同的) to each other, so the race is a test of driving skills around a street, or race course, mostly in the U.S.; Formula One cars are customized (定做的) and raced on road courses around the world. Unlike the kind of car your family drives, neither IndyCars or F1 cars have doors, and their wheels are on the outside of the car’s body.
In 1936, Louis Meyer asked for a bottle of buttermilk after he became the first three-time Indy 500 winner, which led to the tradition of winners drinking a bottle of milk on Victory Lane (车道).
The Indy 500 has grown into one of the most anticipated (期待的) international racing events of the year, with hundreds of thousands of fans flooding into the stands each May. In 2011, it celebrated its 100th event?—?and tickets sold out for the first time ever.
28. What do we know about the first Indianapolis 500?
A. It was founded by Carl Fisher.????????
B. It had twelve thousand racers.????????
C. It was the first car race.
D. It was held in 1909.?
29. Different from Formula One racing, IndyCar racing is _____.
A. raced with the same cars??
B. held in different countries
C. competed on road courses
D. an open-wheel car competition
30. Why did the author mention Louis Meyer?
A. To introduce his great invention.
B. To show his influence on drivers.
C. To describe a fun fact about the Indianapolis 500.
D. To explain the important role of the Indianapolis 500.
31. What can we infer from the last paragraph about the Indianapolis 500?
A. It needs a larger speedway.
B. It enjoys great popularity.?
C. It will raise its ticket prices.
D. It has an unpromising future.

If you visit the new Mummies (木乃伊) show at the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH), in New York City, don’t miss the Gilded Lady. Scientists say she probably died of lung disease when she was in her 40s?—?about 2,000 years ago?—?in Egypt. They even have a model of her skull (头骨). Based on that, an artist was sure how she may have looked when she was alive. And yet, the mummy’s coffin has never been opened. Instead, scientists used a machine called a CT scanner (扫描仪) to look inside.
CT scanners were developed to help doctors examine patients. But the machines turned out to be perfect for studying mummies, too.
“A hundred years ago, scientists would usually open mummies’ coffins. This did a great deal of harm to those mummies,” says AMNH president Ellen V. Futter. “We just don’t do that anymore. We can do so much better. By using CT scanners, scientists can know about an ancient person’s diet from some of a mummy’s hair. Pieces of bone can show who was related to whom.”
Some mummies in Peru were buried with a skull hanging from their neck. Scientists thought these mummies wore the skull of an enemy. But DNA evidence showed that the mummies were buried with the skull of an ancestor (祖先) .
The 19 mummies in the show are from Egypt and Peru. They had completely different reasons for mummifying the dead. The ancient Egyptians believed that mummification allowed an ancestor to live on in the next world. The people who prepared the Gilded Lady thought she would continue to see, hear, and smell. In ancient Peru, people practiced mummification to stay connected with their ancestors. Some families kept mummies in their home.
Futter calls the mummies in the show “messengers from another time.” With the help of technology, scientists will continue to uncover mummies’ secrets so we can understand?it.
32. What did scientists find about the Gilded Lady??
A. She was a great artist.?????
B. She died a natural death. ? ?

C. Mummies usually wore the skull of an enemy.
D. Technology plays an important role in mummy studies.
34. Why did the ancient Peruvians make mummies?
A. To do traditional medical research.

Without much warning, in 2016, Avis Darnley suffered a fall. It was the first sign of Parkinson’s disease. Over the years, Avis, once an active person of Waikanae Beach just north of Wellington, New Zealand, slowly lost the ability to stand or walk and was in a wheelchair finally, dependent on others for care.
John Darnley, Avis’s husband of 44 years, is her main carer. “I used to take time out and exercise by riding around the area,” says John. “But as Avis has become more dependent on me, she can’t be left alone.”
The most he could manage was to take Avis out for walks in her wheelchair, but only for short distances. Then he had a thought: “I wonder if I can join my bicycle and her wheelchair together.”
Looking back to the three-wheeled ice-cream trikes of his youth, John wanted to create the hybrid machine he was picturing in his mind’s eye. He took the idea to Trikes New Zealand. John met with Brian Gilbert at Trikes NZ, based in nearby Levin, and explained what he wanted to be able to do for his wife. John’s idea soon became a reality. Highly prized by the elderly for their extra stability (稳定性) and comfort, the hybrid trike John and Brian developed was far more stable to control the wider frame (构架) and greater weight of Avis’s wheelchair on the front. “It’s an electric trike, too,” says Brian — and, he’s proud to add, “all made in New Zealand.”
Once again Avis is able to see neighbours and friends. Together she and John have taken part in local events and conversations. They even managed a 40-km round trip to a distant beach for a day of sightseeing. “In the future I want to be able to cycle with Avis around different parts of New Zealand,” says John. To this end, he has bought a truck that can fit Avis’s trike. “We’ve always liked to do things with each other and be together,” says John. “No wonder the light has returned to her eyes.”

D. They’ve benefited greatly from the trike.
4. What’s the best title for the text?

I am a young coin collector and coin collecting has taught me a few different things. The two most important skills are: knowing the different conditions of coins and knowing the value of coins. The condition of the coin is its grade. There are six different grades: good (the coin is well worn down), very good (the coin shows a small amount of fine detail), fine (the coin’s higher points are well worn), very fine (the coin’s high points are slightly (轻微地) worn), extra fine (the coin is slightly worn down), and uncirculated (the coin is in the condition that it came from the mint). A mint is a place where coins are made. The value of the coin depends on the coin’s grade, age, how many were made, how much silver is in it and from which mint it came. The older the coin and the better the grade, the more it is worth. When you touch a coin, you hold the edges in between your thumb (the short thick finger) and index finger (the finger next to the thumb). If you touch the top and bottom, you can wear the coin down by making it very smooth.
I organize my collection by the year and mintmark. The mintmark tells where the coin was made. The mints are: Denver (D), Philadelphia (P), and San Francisco (S). A key date is a year when very few coins of a certain type were made and they are therefore difficult to find. The greatest key date in the Mercury Dime series is the 1916-D because there were very few made.
I share my collection with my family and friends. My collection began when my parents started giving the Mercury Dimes to me. They have helped me collect coins by buying them for me and looking through coins with me. The advice I would give about collecting is choose something you want to collect, not what someone else wants you to collect.
5. What can we learn about uncirculated coins?
A. They have many different conditions.
B. They are made mainly for collectors.
C. They are at the highest prices.?
D. They have the highest grade.
6. Which of the following is the right way to hold a coin?
7. What can we infer about the 1916-D Mercury Dime?
A. It is of great value.
B. It is unpopular in the U.S.
C. It is very easy to be found today.
D. It was produced in Philadelphia.
8. What is the attitude of the author’s parents to her hobby?
A. Doubtful. ????????
B. Supportive.
C. Uncaring. ???????
D. Angry.?

38. E。文中的shower, too hot,too cold与E项中的check the water first with your hand语义相关。
39. C。本句后有However一词,表明设空处与后一句在意思上是转折关系。C项表示“我们都不喜欢猫跳上桌子”,但“这些行为其实都是因为动物无聊才造成的”。此外,后一句中的bad pet behavior也是上句中jumps on the table的总结。
40. B。从本段的内容可以看出,养宠物的人要记得“给狗带项圈,写上狗的名字和主人的个人信息,此外还要记得关笼子避免宠物跑丢”,这都证明本段的主题是说要做一个有责任心的主人,B项符合文意。
