Reading strategy: understanding feelings
A letter to a magazine advice columnist
usually includes:
Descriptions of problems
Descriptions of feelings
so it’s important to identify the writer’s emotions and then think about what
advice to give . Try to find information as much as possible used to express the writer’s feelings in the text.
How Sarah felt:
Why?
She scored the lowest mark in her
class.
She found a piece of paper on her
desk that said “stupid Sarah got a D”.
She thought her best friend Hannah
didn’t keep her secret.
Practice of Reading Strategy:
Read A friendship in trouble, and analyse
Andrew’s problem and his feelings by filling in the blanks:
angry
guilty
awkward
He made some really cruel remarks to Matthew.
His best friend Matthew has stopped talking
to him.
1. If your friend tells others about your secrets, what's your feeling and how will you react?
We should keep our promise and keep friends’ secrets. Honesty is one of the most important factors in friendship.
2. When your friendship is in trouble, will you stop talking with your friend and make a new friend?
Friends should unite and help each other
when meeting with some difficulties both in study
or in other fields of life.
If you were Sarah or Andrew, would you try to re-establish the friendship with your friend? What would you do to fix the broken friendship?
If you had problems with a friend, who would you turn to for help?
Problem-solving:
Suppose you are the advice columnist,
what advice will you give Sarah and what
to Andrew?
