Module 6 Films and TV Programmes
Broadway on the high seas
Over the past seven years, the Amber Theater has shown a series of popular theatrical productions. But you won't find the theater on Broadway (a famous street in New York City with many theaters where you can see popular plays and musicals). It is on one of the largest cruise ships (游轮) in the world, Royal Caribbean's Allure of the Seas.
I recently traveled on the ship, where I met with the cast and crew (全体演员和工作人员) of Mamma Mia! They explained what it takes to put on a show at sea. “The safety of our guests and actors is our number one consideration,” said Samantha Grassano, who works with Royal Caribbean's stage crew. Since the ship moves constantly (不断地), sets have to be properly positioned.
Another difficulty is that the theater is used for different shows and activities during a given week. There might be a 3-D movie, Bingo, and a Broadway show all in the same day, so a show's backgrounds and equipment have to be stored properly.
After talking with cast members and getting a backstage tour of the Amber Theater, I attended a production of Mamma Mia! Audience members loved the full-length production. By the end of the show, people were on their feet, cheering and singing along.
Most actors have more than one duty on the ship. “When not on stage,” said dance captain Joe Conroy, “our dancers also help backstage with quick costume (服装) changes, lights, or other duties within the theater.”
Nearly 6,000 passengers — from babies to grandparents — sail on Royal Caribbean's Allure of the Seas each week. In order to attract people of different ages, shows include acrobats (杂技演员), actors, and even ice skaters. But productions at sea are worth all of the work for the smiles they bring.

Film Review: Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
Martial arts films① are often enjoyable but they are seldom great art. Now, to everyone's surprise②, Ang Lee, director of a number of③ excellent films, has made a martial arts film called Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon【1】. The result is a masterpiece④.
【1】本句中director of a number of excellent films作Ang Lee的同位语;called...是过去分词短语作定语,可转换为定语从句that/which is called...
The film belongs to⑤ a type of ⑥ Chinese story called wuxia. These stories tell of⑦ nineteenth-century martial arts masters with unusual⑧ abilities. Wuxia films are popular in⑨ China, and they are now popular in the west too.
The story takes place⑩ in the early 1800s? in China. A man and a woman, Li Mubai (played by Chow Yun-Fat) and Yu Xiulian (played by Michelle Yeoh), both masters of the martial arts, are in love with? each other. But Xiulian had a fiancé? who has died【2】. Because this fiancé was a good friend of Mubai, Mubai feels that he cannot marry? Xiulian.【3】 When someone steals Xiulian's sword?【4】, Mubai and Xiulian try to get it back. The action takes place on Peking rooftops?, and in places as far away as? the deserts of western China. As in the old wuxia stories, characters? leap? through the air every now and then?, with beautiful, graceful movements, while audiences shout in surprise.
【2】who has died为who引导的定语从句,修饰先行词a fiancé。
【3】本句中Because this fiancé... Mubai为Because引导的原因状语从句,主句中that he cannot marry Xiulian为that引导的宾语从句,作feels的宾语。
【4】When someone... sword为When引导的时间状语从句。
Unusually, it is the female characters that interest us most.【5】 Brave, good and strong, Xiulian is the character we care about most.【6】Beautiful Zhang Ziyi plays the part of Yu Jiaolong, a young woman who is not as good as she seems【7】. The fight scenes between Jiaolong and Xiulian are some of the most exciting moments in modern cinema. But one cannot forget the wonderful Chow Yun-Fat, who is as good with a sword as he is with a gun【8】. His romantic scenes with Yu Xiulian are very moving, as their eyes show all the love that they must not express in words【9】.
【5】本句使用了强调句型“It is... that...”,强调了主语the female characters。
句中“Brave, good and strong”为形容词短语作状语,后面的we care about most为省略了关系词that/who/whom的宾语从句,修饰先行词the character。
【7】此处a young woman... seems为Yu Jiaolong的同位语,对其进行补充说明,其中who is not as good as she seems是who引导的定语从句,修饰先行词a young woman。
【8】who is as good... a gun为who引导的非限制性定语从句,先行词为Chow Yun-Fat。
【9】as their eyes show... words为as引导的原因状语从句,其中that they must not... words为that引导的定语从句,修饰先行词all the love。
Films like this rarely reach the cinema. Go and see Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. It will make your heart leap with excitement at its beauty.

A picture is worth a thousand words, as the saying goes. Professional photographer Aaron Josefczyk lives by that statement every day.
Josefczyk photographs sporting and political events. He also works on company and school projects. His assignments (任务) sometimes involve (涉及) travel. “I'm very lucky to get paid for what I enjoy doing,” he said.
As a photographer for Reuters, an international news company, Josefczyk covers events in Ohio. He is also a photographer for Lifetouch, a photography company that specializes in school photos.
Josefczyk's favorite assignments are the ones involving sports. He often covers the games of Cleveland's three professional sports teams, the Cavaliers, Browns, and Indians, as well as professional golf events. When we spoke, he had just returned from covering the Final Four of the 2018 NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament.
“SOME GREAT EXPERIENCES”
Josefczyk has been a professional photographer for 25 years. “When you're a photographer for that long, you get some great experiences,” he said.
Josefczyk became interested in photography when he was a freshman in college. He received a degree in photography from The Ohio State University.
“It's very challenging to get into the professional photography field,” Josefczyk said.“There are so many people doing it, and with technology now, many are photographers without the education behind them.”
EVERY DAY IS DIFFERENT
“As a photographer, I get to see many different things, and get to be a part of them,” Josefczyk said. He has been to the NBA Finals three times and, in 2016, covered the World Series.
“You never know what you're going to do each day,” Josefczyk said. Some of his assignments are planned far beforehand, and others are last-minute. He recently traveled to Florida and the Caribbean island of Curacao for a company photography project. After our interview, Josefczyk was heading off to photograph a speech by the President, who was visiting Ohio. A career (职业) in professional photography is certainly never boring.

The idea of turning recycled plastic bottles into clothing is not new. During the last five years, a large number of clothing companies, businesses, and environmental organizations have started turning plastics into fabric (织物) to deal with plastic pollution. But there's a problem with this method. Research now shows that microfibers (超细纤维) could be the biggest source of plastic in the sea.
Dr. Mark Browne in Santa Barbara, California, has been studying plastic pollution and microfibers for 10 years now. He explains that every time synthetic (合成的) clothes go into a washing machine, a large number of plastic fibers fall off. Most washing machines can't collect these microfibers. So every time the water gets out of a washing machine, microfibers are entering the sewers (下水道) and finally end up in the sea.
In 2011, Browne wrote a paper stating that a single piece of synthetic clothing can produce more than 1,900 fibers per wash. Browne collected samples (样品) from seawater and freshwater sites around the world, and used a special way to examine each sample. He discovered that every single water sample contained microfibers.
This is bad news for a number of reasons. Plastic can cause harm to sea life when eaten. Studies have also shown that plastic can absorb other pollutants.
Based on this evidence, it may seem surprising that companies and organizations have chosen to turn plastic waste into clothing as an environmental “solution.” Even though the science has been around for a while, Browne explains that he's had a difficult time getting companies to listen. When he asked well-known clothing companies to support Benign by Design — his research project that seeks to get clothes that have a bad effect on humans and the environment out of the market — Browne didn't get a satisfying answer. Only one women's clothing company, Eileen Fisher, offered Browne funding.

Two books have been developed to help designers, developers and homeowners make it easier and safer for the blind to find their way to, into and through buildings and public spaces.
The books were created by the Cooperative Research Centre for Construction Innovation (建筑创新), a programme which helps solve the problem of finding ways around buildings and public spaces.
Construction Innovation CEO Keith Hampson says any wayfinding system is more than just signs. “It includes buildings, inside design and lighting,” Keith says. He says people having problems with their eyesight use these communicative signs to make moving around spaces easier. For example, a good sign may include tactile (可感触的) lettering — Braille and a tactile ground surface.
The project won the 2007 Disability Action Week Building Accessible Housing and Environments Award (奖). “The project has received increased national attention since the award last year,” Keith says. “Most importantly however, we have helped to raise the awareness (意识) and need for a wayfinding system across the building and construction industry.”
The Department of Public Works was a key member in the project. Team leader Ron Apelt says people with eyesight problems are often forgotten in the planning and design of buildings and public open spaces.
“Our books are mainly for new buildings and the immediate spaces surrounding these buildings,” Ron says. “However, the books can also be used for any plans for old buildings and improvmg (改善) wayfinding around places such as universities, hospitals and schools.”
“They can also be used in busy spaces like shopping centres as the design ideas remain unchanged no matter what the spaces and places are like.”

Steven Spielberg — Film Director①
Ask a young person in the street who the greatest American film director is, and you may get the answer Steven Spielberg. 【1】 He has certainly made more successful films② than any other director in the west.
Spielberg was born in the state of Ohio, America, in 1946. He showed that he had unusual③ abilities when he was very young, completing his first 15-minute home movie at the age of 13. 【2】 When he was 16 he made a 135-minute home movie called Firelight 【3】. This was shown at a local cinema and made $100.
【2】本句为双重主从复合句, that引导宾语从句; when he was very young为when引导的时间状语从句;后面的现在分词短语completing his... age of 13作状语。
At the age of 24, Spielberg made a 26-minute film called Amblin. A Hollywood film studio④ liked it and employed⑤ Spielberg to make a full-length⑥ film. This film, Sugarland Express, made in 1974 【4】, had some success. Spielberg's next film was Jaws, a film about a shark⑦ that ate people 【5】. This was one of the most successful films of all time⑧. Other wonderful films followed: E.T. — The Extra Terrestrial (1982), The Indiana Jones Trilogy, Jurassic Park (a film about dinosaurs), and Schindler's List. For this last film Spielberg won an Oscar, Hollywood's highest prize.
【5】a film... people作Jaws的同位语,对其进行补充说明,其中that ate people为that引导的定语从句,修饰先行词a shark。
For many years, Spielberg could not make a mistake. However, in the last fifteen years, some of his films have been less successful. But it is generally agreed, that he, more than anyone else in the history of films, understand the meaning of the word “entertainment⑨”. 【6】
【6】本句中it is generally agreed, that...属于“It is+过去分词+that...”

Dear Mandy,

I work really hard, often study late into the night! I've tried to talk to my mother, but she always say I have to work as hard like my brother does. My brother don't study very hard, but he always gets excellent grades. It's not fair!
The only thing I like are art. My teacher says I'm the best student she's had for year. When I told my dad, all he said was, “You mustn't waste your time in art. You must focus your mind on your lessons!” I'm feeling quite puzzling what to do now. Would you please help me out? Thanks a lot!
Yours sincerely,
