This short list of the best rock festivals in the world is limited to those that feature primarily mainstream (主流) and hard rock bands. Many great festivals weren't primarily rock shows, so they didn't make the cut. With than in mind, here are a few top rock festivals you need to put on your list.
Austin City Limits Music Festival
Tied to the popular PBS music series “Austin City Limits”, the Austin City Limits Music Festival attracts rock fans who enjoy acts in the mainstream. It usually (but not always) runs during a weekend in September and takes place in Zilker Park in Austin, Texas. Check the website for the dates before you plan your trip.
Download Festival
The Download Festival happens every June over one weekend at Donington Park in Leicestershire, U.K. There are a ton of bands playing on different stages during the three-day event, so it's important to map out your route in advance. Reading Festival
Held in Reading, U. K., the Reading Festival takes place over the last weekend in August. In 1992, front man Kurt Cobain was taken to the stage in a wheelchair. It became one of the most special and famous moments in the history of the Reading Festival. But that led to a rumor (传闻) that Kurt Cobain was terribly addicted (上瘾的) to drugs and was in poor health.
Rock on the Range
Rock on the Range brings together hard rock and metal bands every May to Columbus, Ohio, for a weekend festival. Hinder, Stone Temple Pilots and Alice in Chains are some of the big names that have played at Rock on the Range. Soundgarden and Metallica were on the schedule for 2017.

Various animals are respected and even worshipped (崇拜) in different cultures. In Hinduism, for example, cows are valued for their gentle nature. However, in ancient Egypt, crocodiles (鳄鱼) were regarded as living representations of the god Sobek.
During the serious drought in the 15th century, the Mossi were led to an undiscovered pond by the crocodiles. This not only allowed the Mossi to survive, but also led to the founding of the village Bazoulé.
As the villagers owe their survival to the crocodiles, they now care for and live side by side with them. The villagers even bury the crocodiles and hold funerals for them after their death. The crocodiles are not only regarded as protectors of Bazoulé, but also fortune-tellers that give best wishes to the villagers. It seems that the worship of the crocodiles has paid off. For over 70 years, there has never been a death from a crocodile attack in Bazoulé. It's normal for women to wash their clothes in the water and gather plants nearby. And it is also normal to see children playing around the water where the crocodiles live.
Naturally, this strange relationship between the villagers and crocodiles has attracted a lot of attention. Tourists from all over the world come to the village, hoping to catch sight of this unlikely bond between humans and crocodiles. Visitors have the opportunity to buy a chicken, with which they can attract the crocodiles out of the water. You can pose for pictures, and if you're brave enough, you can sit on a crocodile's back just like the local children usually do.
The village is trying to develop its tourism, but unfortunately, it was found to be threatened by global warming. Lower annual rainfall means that the pond will vanish one day .Perhaps the legends are true, and when this happens, the crocodiles will lead the Mossi to a new water source.

About 3 in 10 people worldwide, or 2.1 billion, lack access to safe and readily available water at home, and 6 in 10, or 4.5 billion, lack safely managed sanitation (卫生设备), according to a report by UNICEF.
The report presents the first global judgment of “safely managed” drinking water and sanitation services. The conclusion is that too many people still lack access, particularly in rural areas.
“Safe water and sanitation at home shouldn't only belong to rich people,” says Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom. “These are the basic requirements for human health, and all countries must ensure that everyone can access them.”
Billions of people have gained access to basic drinking water and sanitation services since 2000, but these services don't necessarily provide safe water an sanitation. Many homes, healthcare organizations and schools also still lack soap (香皂) and water for hand-washing. This puts the health of all people, especially young children, at risk for diseases, such as diarrhoea (腹泻). As a result, every year, 361,000 children under the age of 5 die of diarrhoea.
“Safe water and effective sanitation are essential. They are beneficial to the health of every child and every community,” said UNICEF Executive Director Anthony Lake. “As we improve these services for the poorest children today, we give them a fairer chance and a better future.”
Good hygiene (卫生健康) is one of the simplest and most effective ways to prevent the spread of disease. For the first time, the SDGs are monitoring the percentage of people who have facilities to wash their hands at home with soap and water. According to the new report, access to water and soap for hand-washing is terribly different in the 70 countries with available data, from 15 percent of the population in sub-Saharan Africa to 76 percent in western Asia and northern Africa.

A.All people should have available safe water and sanitation.
B.The government should care more about people's health.
C.It is very difficult to deal with water problems.
D.People have to pay a lot for safe water.
根据第三段“Safe water and sanitation at home shouldn't only belong to rich people... ensure that everyone can access them. ”可知,他认为所有人都应该有安全的饮用水和卫生设备。
9.361,000 children under the age of 5 die of diarrhoea every year for lack of ________.
A.nutritious food

C.medicine and safe water
D.soap and water for washing hands
Many homes, healthcare organizations and schools also still lack soap and water... 361,000 children under the age of 5 die of diarrhoea.
10.What does the underlined word “essential” in Paragraph 5 mean?

HOW DAISY LEARNED TO HELP WILDLIFE
Daisy had always longed① to help endangered 【1】 species② of wildlife. One day she woke up and found a flying 【2】 carpet③ by her bed. “Where do you want to go?” it asked. Daisy responded④ immediately. “I'd like to see some endangered wildlife,” she said. “Please take me to a distant⑤ land where I can find the animal that gave fur⑥ to make this sweater. 【3】” At once the carpet flew away and took her to Tibet. There Daisy saw an antelope looking sad.【4】 It said, “We're being killed for the wool beneath⑦ our stomachs. Our fur is being used【5】 to make sweaters for people like you. As a result, we are now an endangered species.” At⑧ that Daisy cried, “I'm sorry I didn't know that. I wonder what is being done to help you. Flying carpet, please show me a place where there's some wildlife protection.【6】.”
【4】saw an antelope looking sad中,looking sad作定语,修饰an antelope。
【5】We're being killed...和Our fur is being used...
【6】Where there's some wildlife protection是where引导的定语从句,修饰先行词a place。
The flying carpet travelled so fast that next minute they were in Zimbabwe. 【7】 Daisy turned around⑨ and found that she was being watched 【8】 by an elephant. “Have you come to take my photo?” it asked. In relief? Daisy burst into laughter?. “Don't laugh,” said the elephant, “We used to be an endangered species. Farmers hunted us without mercy?. They said we destroyed their farms, and money from tourists only went to the large tour companies. So the government decided to help. They allowed tourists to hunt only a certain? number of animals if they paid the farmers. Now the farmers are happy and our numbers are increasing. So good things are being done 【9】 here to save local wildlife.”
【7】The flying carpet travelled so fast that...
【8】was being watched
【9】are being done
Daisy smiled. “That's good news. It shows the importance? of wildlife protection, but I'd like to help as the WWF? suggests 【10】.” The carpet rose again and almost at once they were in a thick rainforest. A monkey watched them as it rubbed? itself. “What are you doing?” asked Daisy. “I'm protecting myself from? mosquitoes?,” it replied. “When I find a millipede? insect, I rub it over my body. It contains a powerful drug which affects mosquitoes. You should pay more attention to the rainforest where I live and appreciate how the animals live together. 【11】 No rainforest, no animals, no drugs.”
Daisy was amazed. “Flying carpet, please take me home so I can tell WWF and we can begin producing this new drug. Monkey, please come and help.” The monkey agreed. The carpet flew home. As they landed, things began to disappear. Two minutes later everything had gone — the monkey, too. So Daisy was not able to make her new drug. But what an experience! 【12】 She had learned so much! And there was always WWF...
【12】... what an experience! “……多么奇妙的一次经历呀!”是感叹句,是 ... what an experience it was!

戴茜如释重负 (in relief), 突然笑了起来 (burst into laughter)。

Katie Smith Milway, author of the CitizenKid series, encourages children to be better citizens (公民). Milway's most well-known book is called One Hen: How One Small Loan (贷款) Made a Big Difference. The book is inspired (赋予灵感) by the true story of Kwabena “Kojo” Darko. It tells how a poor boy, Darko, in Ghana receives a small loan and buys a hen. This results in 25 more hens. The farm is enough to support Kojo's family and provide a livelihood for others.
In a recent interview, Darko talked about how the hen changed his life. “It was amazing,” he said. “I slept with the chicken; I did everything with the chicken. It brought us money, and I was able to go to school and study.” The tiny farm finally grew into one of the largest in West Africa.
Darko went on to become chairman of Opportunity International, an organization that gives loans to people who cannot get them from a bank. “I want to give people who are poor and needy a chance just as someone did for me,” Darko said.
By writing about how small kindnesses can help families like Darko's, Milway hopes to encourage kids to deal with such problems as poverty (贫穷). “Build a little business,” she said. “Maybe it 's a lemonade stand. Maybe it's bigger than that. With the money you have made, you have a choice of spending it, saving it, or giving it to help others.”

She said that her mother encouraged her by volunteering and helping international students. “We were always a home where they could feel welcome,” Milway said.

International Tiger Day is an annual celebration to raise the awareness of tiger conservation. It's held on 29 July. Governments and citizens across the world organize awareness programs on that day to spread the importance of protecting tigers.
From ancient times, tigers were the subject of constant attraction for their beauty, size and sometimes mythical (神话) stories related to them. People's fascination (迷恋) for tigers is obvious from the fact that tigers are still a part of many national symbols and flags. Tigers are the largest cat species. Unfortunately, the population of tigers is fast decreasing. Every part of tigers from tail to skin to nail is traded in the illegal market for very high values. Many tigers are hunted, which is one of the key threats to their existence. They are also caught and raised as pets. 97 percent of the world tiger populations decreased in the last 100 years and only 3,890 tigers are left. If tigers get extinct, we will lose a species. And it also means that enough forests have been destroyed, which may endanger many other species.
For us, tigers are symbols of wildlife's fighting for survival. It reminds us of the dangers we face because of people's over-exploitation (过度开发) of the nature. It's an opportunity as well. Many efforts are on the way to double the tiger population by 2022. Strict national and international laws are against hunting and trading tigers. As a result, the number of tigers in the wild has risen for the first time in more than 100 years. Even though this is just a small increase, it's a huge symbolic victory in our efforts against the destruction of forests and wildlife. It's very important that we all join together in this effort, not only to save tigers, but also to save our forests.

Milway likes the idea of kids volunteering. When she was growing up, she enjoyed taking part in church activities and her school service organizations.

A
I was born in Venice, one of the most popular tourist attractions in Italy, and studied designing at university here. Though I have also spent time away, I have always come back because it's my home.
In Venice, there are no roads, only canals, so you have to get around on foot or by boat. I live on a canal in the Rialto area in a house that was built in 1588 for the Muti family, who were businessmen in the silk trade. In the mid-eighteenth century, it was home to the Vezzi family, who made things like plates and bowls in fine china and became rich by sending these around the world. These businessmen's houses in Venice are like palaces. Their owners had to have space to show off their goods, but the building also had to be an office, a factory, a store and a home. My house came into our family in 1919, when it was bought by my grandfather. He died before I was born but he was the director of a museum where I often do research on old documents (文件). On some of these, I've seen notes in his handwriting, so, in a way, I met him through these documents.
Sadly, the population of Venice has dropped from 120,000 in the 1950s to about 60,000 now. This doesn't include the thousands of tourists who come to visit. I welcome the tourists but unless something is done to stop everyday shops like bakeries from disappearing, the city will die. I want people who love the city to come here to live and work and give Venice back a life that is not just about tourism.

Just like your senses of sight, smell, or touch, a strong sense of humor (幽默) could actually save your life. Laughter helps our brains tell the difference between something bad and jokes. It magically helps develop a special relationship with our friends. And it has even been shown to be good for our health. Most importantly to many of us, humor can also tell you whether you've found your perfect partner.
To take a wider view of the power of humor in relationships, University of Kansas professor Jeffrey Hall surveyed the results of 39 related studies, and more than 15,000 men and ladies took part in this survey. After the survey, he found that when it comes to love, a “good sense of humor” means far more than being able to tell a good joke, or even being considered funny — relationships in which couples are able to laugh at the same things are the strongest and most satisfying relationships.
“It's not about being a great comedian, but finding what's funny in everyday life and enjoying it together,” Hall explains in a statement, “whether that's the comedy The Simpsons or repeating funny things your kids say. The most important is that you do it together. If you share a sense of what's funny, it improves your relationship through laughter.”
To this point, Hall shares another finding: it's important to laugh “with” your partner, not “at” him/her. If you have a very strong sense of humor, it will make your partner become the butt (笑柄) of too many jokes. As a result, it will undo the magic of shared laughter and likely lead to hidden unhappiness deeper than any joke.
Hall states that this is all true even between you and your future husband or wife, not just established relationships. So, if you have a first date with somebody, make sure you have a few short jokes to improve your relationships, and leave the insulting (侮辱人的) jokes for those who should receive them.
4.What's the purpose of Hall's survey?

A.Being a brave man.
B.Repeating funny things.
C.Laughing with your partner.
D.Doing some challenging things together.
It's not about being a great comedian, but finding what's funny in everyday life and enjoying it together.
6.What does the underlined word “undo” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A.Destroy. B.Provide.
C.Refuse. D.Practice.
从本句话的后半句... the magic of shared laughter and likely lead to hidden unhappiness deeper than any joke.
7.What's the author's suggestion for people having a first date?
A.Don't just think about yourself.
B.Don't ask about your partner's age.
C.Don't talk too much about comedies.
D.Don't play some insulting jokes on your partner.

A
I was born in Venice, one of the most popular tourist attractions in Italy, and studied designing at university here.

3.What can we infer from the last paragraph about Venice?

A.To write a paper about humor.
B.To help couples get happiness.
C.To learn more about humor's strength in relationships.
D.To discover strong and satisfying qualities of humor.

5.According to the writer, which will benefit your relationship with your partner?

Dear Sir/Madam,
I'm writing to express my opinion on how to protect the animals on the island I visited last weekend. The animals there are lovely, but it's said that the number of them is decreasing year by year. If measures aren't taken, they will be in danger of extinction.
As far as I'm concerned, laws concerning animal protection should be made to punish those illegal hunters. Besides, it is necessary to set up natural reserves. There is no doubt that animals living in safe environments are more likely to survive. What's more, something should be done to raise people's awareness of protecting animals.
To sum up, protecting animals is of great urgency and it is vital for us to take steps to protect them.
Please help the poor animals. I am sure that they will survive with your help.
Yours,
Li Hua
