Module 2 Highlights of My Senior Year
By the time you graduate from high school, there are some things you should know to be successful in the future.Whether you go to college, or begin working full time, you will benefit from mastering a set of skills, useful not only in school, but in life.
Money management
Learning to manage your money means understanding how to keep track of your income and expenses.Take a course to learn basic knowledge on money management if your school offers one.Topics will include balancing a checkbook and learning how to compare prices while shopping for everyday items.
Time management
A high school student needs to learn how to budget her or his time. This involves knowing when to work, when to play, when to socialize (交际) and when to relax.Getting all of your tasks done and still having time to do the things you love will contribute to the peace of your mind and help reduce stress.
Goal?setting
The high school graduates should be able to set a goal and work towards it.This requires understanding which goal is realistic, and which is just a pie?in?the?sky vision. In addition, as a high school graduate, you must have a clear idea of how to get from point A to point B, taking the necessary steps to reach your goal.In general, knowing what you want and how to get it is a mark of adulthood.
Communication
Effective communication is key to human relationships. This includes knowledge of body language, etiquette (礼仪) and politeness when you get on with a variety of people. It also involves how you communicate in writing, whether it's an e?mail to your boss, a job application or a letter of complaint to your neighbors.
What makes you happy
Many high school students are stressed out due to a large amount of schoolwork and the college application process.Taking time to find out what makes you happy will help you avoid pitfalls (陷阱) when it comes to making big decisions in later life.

There's so much to remember?. One of the best things about this year has been working as? an arts editor for this newspaper. I've so enjoyed it! I love writing, and working on? this paper is my first step towards becoming a journalist, so this has been a real success? for me.

At the start of the school year, we were given training in how to do this, and it's clear that this kind of work can really help people.I think I'll continue to work as a mediator when I go to college.
During the Easter vacation, I went on a short school skiing trip to the Rocky Mountains. I've been skiing quite a few times, but never with the school, and since two good friends came on the trip, we had great fun racing each other down the ski slopes. It's well?known that Americans are competitive, and I did enjoy it whenever I won our races!

Other things I'm pleased about— getting good grades on my final exams, and receiving the senior prize for English Literature. I was given a car by my parents so I've been able to drive to school, which is brilliant. And of course, I'll never forget being elected to the student council. I really enjoyed meeting the teachers and telling them how we, the students, feel about things, and what we think should happen in the school!
All these things have been wonderful. But I have to say, the highlight of the year was the senior prom. For an American girl, it's so important that you have a good time at the prom. Well, I did! Daniel, a boy in my English class, asked me to go to the prom with him, and I was so pleased — I'd been hoping he would ask me. I found a dress that suited me perfectly, and had my hair specially done on the day of the prom. It took two hours but it was worth it, as everyone told me I looked very elegant! A group of us rented a nice car to take us to the prom. The food was delicious and I ate so much that I had to stop dancing for a while! We shared a table with some good friends, and laughed and told jokes all evening. It's a great pity that it's probably the last time this will happen.
I'm pleased about是定语从句,修饰先行词other things。

Daniel and I danced most of the dances together. But the big surprise of the evening was when I was elected prom queen! This was so unexpected, and I can't tell you how good this made me feel! After the prom, a group of us drove down to the coast, and sat on the beach in our long dresses and dinner jackets. I shall never forget watching the sunrise over the sea — it was unforgettable! Afterwards, we went and had an enormous breakfast in a nearby hotel — it was a perfect ending to a perfect school year.

afterwards adv.后来
enormous/I'n??m?s/adj.

A
I was very excited on the first day of high school! I had P.E. for the first period. We hurriedly gathered in the locker room (衣帽间) when the headmaster began to speak, “Good morning, boys and girls! Welcome to the first day of the great new school year. We will begin with the pledge (誓言) of loyalty.”
I pulled my shirt over my head and my right hand immediately rested over my heart. A few tears came to my eyes as every time I pledged. I thought of my grandpa. He had died almost a year before, but I still missed him every day. Grandpa served in World War Ⅱ and the flag had a very special meaning for him.
The next morning in the locker room, I noticed something strange. Some girls talked through the pledge. In the morning after that, even fewer did the pledge, including the teachers. By the second week of school, I was the only girl in the whole locker room that did the pledge.
The next morning, I hid in the bathroom to change clothes and pledge. There I couldn't see the flag and felt guilty to be hiding like that. I kept hiding for the next week and felt worse.
I spent a weekend gathering up my nerve. On Monday, I changed into my gym clothes right away and was standing by my locker when the headmaster began morning announcements. The pledge started and I put my hand over my heart.
A girl nearby locked her locker and asked, “Why are you doing that?” She looked confused.
“My grandpa fought in World War Ⅱ and he died last year,” I said. “I'm doing it for him.”
She felt embarrassed and looked away. “Oh,” she said.
Over the next few weeks, more girls questioned me about the pledge. I gave them all that same answer.
I never inspired other girls to do the pledge along with me. They made a choice; I made mine. I was doing it for Grandpa, but more than that, I was doing it for Grandpa raised me to be proud of my country and pride didn't stop.

In America, after middle school comes high school, which includes grades 9 through 12. Students are required to take certain subjects like English, social studies, math, science, and physical education. In addition, they choose among elective subjects to complete their high school education. Electives include subjects in technology, music, art, and foreign languages.
Each student in the school has their own locker for books and personal items. This convenience saves students from carrying textbooks, and allows students a small space they can decorate with posters and favorite objects.
Most high schools have at least one sports team that competes in local events, and all students are encouraged to be involved in athletics. Schools often offer football, baseball and softball (垒球), basketball, volleyball, tennis, and soccer. Some may even have sports like golf, swimming, gymnastics and cross?country skiing.
Many high school students have part?time jobs by the age of 15 or 16, some even earlier. Their first jobs are often babysitting or cutting lawns, but later they will likely get a job at a fast?food restaurant, video store, or clothing shop.
Sixteen years old is legal driving age in most states, and students usually want to own a car as soon as they can. Some parents allow their children to drive a family vehicle, and may even buy a car as a graduation present. Others prefer that their sons and daughters earn enough to purchase a used vehicle. Regardless, many teenagers feel it's a necessity to own a car, and will do whatever it takes to be able to drive.
Each school holds certain yearly (一年一次的) activities for the entire school body, such as homecoming, prom night, holiday celebrations, etc.
Homecoming is celebrated each fall, usually on a weekend, and events leading up to it may last all week. While homecoming is celebrated differently at each school, it usually includes a parade and the crowning of the Homecoming King and Queen, and ends with a football game and school dance.

C
It was the night before my election.I was running for Sophomore Vice President.
I had prepared a performance for the election — a funny boxing match. The fight had popular moves as seen in Dodge Ball, Iron Man, and Super Smash Brothers. In the end, I would perform my famous move, the Power?Punch from Hot Rod.
My friend Cheyenne and I rehearsed (排练)the fight for hours, but the fight would not be a fight without music and sound effects. This is where my brother came in.He stayed up all night to work on that soundtrack. And when my computer's disk burner (刻录机) went out at 6 in the morning, he spent a college student's week's worth of incomes to replace it.
Why would he go into all that trouble?Because he knew that out of all the other important things he could be doing, this was imperative to me.He knew because it was once important to him.Having graduated from Layton High just a year earlier, he knew what it was like to be in the centre of people's attention. He knew how fun high school could be, and he wanted me to have a great experience.
I ended up losing the election, but that day changed my world forever. The lesson my brother taught me became my most important belief. But it wasn't until I had a similar opportunity that I really understood why he cared so much.
What did it take for me to understand? It was the performance. The rest of the cast and I would rehearse every day after school for 6 months all for what? The chance to perform a play eight times. As I came out on that stage for the first time and listened to the laughter, I was filled with joy.By the end of the play, the audience broke into tears, and so did we.What happened? We had the sweet opportunity of giving them an unforgettable theatre moment — a moment to laugh, reflect, and shed tears.
9.Why did the author prepare a performance?
A.To prove he had a gift for performing.
B.To introduce moves from some movies.

10.How did the author's brother respond when the computer's disk burner went out?
A.He decided to give up in the end.
B.He bought one with his own money.
C.He found another way to make music.
D.He borrowed one from a college student.
根据第三段的“And when my computer's disk burner (刻录机) went out at 6 in the morning, he spent a college student's week's worth of incomes to replace it.”
11.What does the underlined word “imperative” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A.Important. B.Pleasant.
C.Difficult. D.Useful.
根据第四段画线词前面的“out of all the other important things”和后文的“He knew because it was once important to him.”
12.What did the author most probably learn from his brother?
A.We should try our best to do everything well.
B.We should spread the kindness we have received.
C.Family members should always support each other.
D.Happiness comes from what we do to brighten others' life.
Developing good study habits isn't easy. 1 In this way, you'll become more and more successful as a student.
Start by allowing no interruptions. 2 You have to give 100 percent of your attention to your work.Don't allow yourself to be distracted by friends or fellow students.Keep your goal in mind; know what you have to do and when it needs to be done.Don't let other people influence you into not doing your work.
3 If you study best in the morning, plan to do your hardest subjects first.Remember not to leave today's work till tomorrow.A delay like this is called “procrastination”.If you delay for any reason, you'll find it more and more difficult to get things done when you need to.You may rush to make up the time you wasted getting started, resulting in careless and error?filled work.
Another good way to study is to take part in partnered and group?study sessions. These allow students to share ideas, and help each other deal with difficult material. 4
Forming good study habits can be difficult at first, and requires energy and a strong will. But if you commit yourself to it, success will be yours. 5 By doing so, you will know that you have tried. If you are satisfied with what you've done and know that you have tried your best, your grade will be the icing on the cake.
A.Figure out when you're most productive.
B.It's impossible to study while chatting or watching TV.
C.Always give your best in the classroom and in study sessions.
D.Putting off your task for any reason can make it difficult to finish on time.
E.You may do well enough but maybe you can hardly achieve your goal easily.
F.But start with a plan, put in a lot of hard work, and studying will become easier.
G.In addition, learning among students is a good way of getting a firmer grasp of the material.
1.选F 承接上文“Developing good study habits isn't easy.”
2.选B 承接上文“Start by allowing no interruptions.”并与下文“Don't allow yourself to be distracted by friends or fellow students.”
3.选A 承接下文“If you study best in the morning, plan to do your hardest subjects first.”
4.选G 承接上文“These allow students to share ideas, and help each other deal with difficult material.”
5.选C 承接下文“By doing so, you will know that you have tried. If you are satisfied with what you've done and know that you have tried your best, your grade will be the icing on the cake.”

When you put down your pens at the end of the college entrance exam, 12 hard years of study will have come to an end. Forget your studies for a while. It's time to enjoy yourselves!
There are many ways to celebrate this special month of graduation. You can have photos taken with your classmates and teachers, or dine out together and exchange gifts.
High school students in Western countries such as the United States and Canada usually have a prom to mark their graduation. It's to mark the time kids turn into young men and women. After the prom, teenagers either go to college or find a job. It means they are no longer as dependent on their parents as they were before.
At the prom, boys usually dress in dinner jackets and bow ties, though many different types of formal clothes are worn. Traditionally, girls give boys matching boutonnieres (a small collection of flowers they pin to their jackets). Girls traditionally wear formal dresses, or dress to shock or be noticed, in shiny or brightly colored materials.
Common prom activities include dining, dancing, the crowning of a Prom King and Queen, and just talking to friends. In some cases, high school students collect funds for their class prom through the four years of their high school. High schools in or near large cities may rent ballrooms at expensive hotels or, to be unusual, on a pleasure cruise boat (游船). But often costs are cut by simply using the school gym. Students make a lot of effort to decorate the gym to make the event special. The music played at the prom will be the most popular kinds, like rock and hip?hop.
The students elect the Prom Queen. She is partnered with a Prom King who is elected similarly. These are great honors that the pair take very seriously. The two dance with each other to celebrate their election.

Fixed or growth mindest — which do you have?
We live in an uncertain world with all the technological advances we are experiencing, which means that there is a requirement for a change in mindest (思维模式).In order to be on top of our game both personally and organizationally, we need to develop a growth mindset.
A fixed mindset supposes that you have native abilities and are naturally clever or skilled in certain areas of life. When you receive information about how you have performed in a test or set of tasks, you may worry about how you are judged. Our parents probably said to us when we were young, “Since you scored really well in that test, you must be clever.” However, by being repeatedly told “You are clever” or “You are really great at your job”, a person's self?esteem (自尊) is actually damaged.
The growth?mindset individuals view life as a series of exciting challenges and want to constantly learn.Brain activity occurs in this mindset when they receive information about what they could do better or improve. They do not view their abilities as fixed or as failure.Learning is king and the more they practice, the more they know they will succeed.
What is important is giving praise around process and not around ability. For example, instead of saying “Since you got a great score, you must be clever”, say “You got a great score, and you must have tried really hard”.This creates a challenge in individuals and encourages them to take on more tasks, responsibilities and risks.
The meanings of mindsets are massive for business. If you have fixed?mindset managers, they will not be fans of giving feedback (反馈).They will not want to change themselves or others because they fear failure. Therefore, the business could stagnate because there is no risk or innovation (创新) occurring.
Listen from your own fixed mindset — for example, “I can't do that” — and answer with a growth?mindset response — “I can't do that yet!” Remember, there is no such thing as failure and there's only learning. If you don't fail occasionally, you will never learn to change and grow.
1.What is the author's opinion of people's mindsets?
A.A growth mindset means no failure.
B.People need to stand a fixed mindset.
C.People should develop a growth mindset.
D.A fixed mindset helps to protect reputation.
从第一段最后一句“In order to be on top of ...we need to develop a growth mindset.”
2.Which of the following judgments is more encouraging to those with a fixed mindset?
A.You are clever.
B.You are skillful.
C.You have worked hard.
D.You are great at your job.
根据第二段中的“However, by being repeatedly told ...self?esteem is actually damaged.”
3.What do the growth?mindset individuals support strongly?
A.Keeping on learning.
B.Viewing ability as failure.
C.Giving praise around ability.
D.Learning from the fixed mindset.
特别是第三段最后一句“Learning is king and the ...they will succeed.”
4.What does the underlined word in Paragraph 5 mean?
A.Make progress. B.Stand still.
C.Keep moving. D.Be successful.
从画线词所在的句子和前一句“They will not want to change themselves ...there is no risk or innovation (创新) occurring.”

I still remember the happiest moment of my life. I decided to hold a party for my Italian friends while living in Florence, Italy. My friends didn't speak any English. And I vividly remember 1 (try) to only speak Italian in 2 party. And then, someone asked me to tell a joke.
I don't know if you know this, but 3 (tell) jokes in another language is one of the most 4 (pain) experiences you can imagine.
I began the joke.“C'era una volta (Once upon a time) ...”
Halfway through the joke, I began to get nervous, so I suddenly forgot the Italian words. And 30 Italians were staring at me, 5 (wait) for the joke to come to an end. At the last minute, I remembered and completed the joke. I waited for the sound of crickets ... But instead I experienced a 6 (thunder) laugh and a round of applause. I made dozens of Italians laugh, in their country, in their language.
7 today, that memory continues to be one of the 8 (happy) moments I've ever experienced. And it's the reason 9 , over the last four years, I 10 (study) languages and now I can speak five: English, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, and German.

1.trying remember doing sth.
10.have been studying 根据时间状语“over the last four years”及语境可知这里应用现在完成进行时。

Therefore, I told them interested stories and how I was enjoying Brazil. As a result, nobody knew truth. I still think that it was right to do so.
答案:第一句:before→ago; 去掉for
Unfortunate→Unfortunately; staying→stay
第四句:will→would; and后加that

My Ideal High School
Though my present school is great, I have been dreaming of a school that satisfies all the students.
My ideal high school would be like this:The school is located near a small river, at the bottom of a green hill, with beautiful flowers blooming all year round.Subjects can be selected according to the needs and interests of students. If so, we must be interested in everything taught in school. The timetables are flexible, and teachers just need to appear in the classroom when necessary. My wish is that there will be no examinations forever.
Without the pressure from examinations, we can take part in any of the after?school activities we like. What a wonderful school life!

A.You are clever.
B.You are skillful.
C.You have worked hard.
D.You are great at your job.

3.What do the growth?mindset individuals support strongly?
A.Keeping on learning.
B.Viewing ability as failure.

My Ideal High School
Though my present school is great, I have been dreaming of a school that satisfies all the students.
My ideal high school would be like this:The school is located near a small river, at the bottom of a green hill, with beautiful flowers blooming all year round.Subjects can be selected according to the needs and interests of students. If so, we must be interested in everything taught in school. The timetables are flexible, and teachers just need to appear in the classroom when necessary. My wish is that there will be no examinations forever.
Without the pressure from examinations, we can take part in any of the after?school activities we like. What a wonderful school life!

W:Last night I had a frightening experience. While I was eating dinner at the fast food restaurant where I normally go when I'm in a hurry, the manager announced that everybody had to leave the building. The place was crowded and that made the situation dangerous, as everyone was determined to get out first. To make matters worse, an elderly woman, who must have weighed 300 pounds, had just come up to the entrance, which was also the only exit. In the meantime, I remembered that I had left my purse in the chair I had been occupying when the announcement was made. It was certainly not convenient to return and get it, but I had to do it. When I finally got outside, I saw that the police bomb team had arrived and the men were studying the area. They finally found out that it was all a false alarm and the crowd went away.

No one can doubt the fact that education plays an important role in a person's life. However, different people prefer different ways of education. Recently, a survey in Canada found that about 40 percent of high school students are not in favor of daily homework, which quickly led to a heated discussion about whether daily homework should be ended or not in schools.
Some people insist that daily homework helps students a lot. Yet others are for the opinion that homework is nothing more than a routine activity that cuts time for leisure or physical exercise. It's true that out?of?class activities should be valued in a student's development, but from my point of view, homework still plays an important role in one's life.
Doing daily homework is a way to build a foundation for a person's self?development. In the long run, student's study habits will be more developed and their awareness of the importance of learning will be raised by doing homework every day. An experiment carried out by the University of British Columbia found that former students who did homework every day still take part in self?study every day even though they have already graduated. Homework also helped give them a deeper understanding of how important education is in a person's life.
Students doing homework every day also have better time management skills, since daily academic exercises can help them plan their free time more effectively. Take me as an example, I spent a lot of time playing video games when I was in primary school when there was little homework to do. After I got to middle school, the time I spent on homework began to increase greatly. But it did not become a burden for me. Instead, it helped get rid of my gaming habit as well as improve my ability to manage time.
Doing homework not only develops students' good habits and knowledge, but also improves their ability to manage their spare time. Although doing daily homework isn't ideal for everyone, people have to admit that the advantages it brings are more valuable than the harm.

At the age of 16, Julia Butterfly Hill quit school and worked at a restaurant. For many years, she was only interested in making money and material things. Then one day she had a serious car accident, which changed her life. Hill said:“I realized I wanted to find a more powerful purpose for being here on this planet.”
As soon as she recovered, Hill traveled to California. There she saw ancient redwood trees, which are the largest trees in the whole world. The wood from redwood trunks is very hard. So the Pacific Lumber Company cut down many of the huge redwoods to use for construction. There are not many forests of these trees left. Many environmental activists want to protect the remaining trees. The redwoods are very important to the environment.
In 1997 Hill learned a group called Earth First was working to protect a particular group of trees. They decided to send someone up into a redwood tree, hoping this would stop the company from cutting the trees down. Julia Butterfly Hill volunteered.
Hill lived in the tree for over two years without ever coming down. Her home was a 6?by?8?foot tree house, 180 feet up. It is always cold and wet in a redwood tree. There were even very serious winter storms while Hill was in the tree. The wind and cold almost knocked Hill out of the tree. But she did not fall — she survived.
Finally, after years of arguing, the company decided to protect Luna, the tree Hill lived in. They signed an agreement to never cut down this huge redwood tree or the trees around it. When Hill put her feet on the earth again, she began to cry. But from that moment on Hill hasn't stopped working to protect the environment.

A new study finds a lack of education for young children in developing nations seriously affects the country's economic progress. The organization Results for Development called R4D performed the study. The Non?Governmental group is based in Washington D.C. Its study says children who are not attending primary school are an unused source of economic growth for their country.
R4D says it performed the study because it was worried about a growing worldwide problem in education.
Milan Thomas works for R4D. He says there has been progress in reducing the number of children who do not attend school, but he says that progress has slowed in recent years. He says there is no disagreement that children with basic education can look forward to a better life.
“The benefits associated with primary education are really undisputed at this point because there are countless studies showing that children who complete basic education tend to enjoy better health and higher incomes over their lifetimes,” said Thomas.
But he says even though the value of education is known, it is important to find new ways of proving that value. So the organization led its work with the question, “what is the estimated cost to a nation's economy of its out?of?school children?”
The study uses information from the UNESCO Institute for Statistics, as well as studies of developing labor markets. The results indicate the losses suffered by 20 developing countries if more young children can not get basic education. Milan Thomas says the study also considered earnings the children not attending primary school would never receive.
He says the research found that it is far more costly in sub?Saharan Africa to have primary school age children out of school than to educate them. He notes the cost to provide all children with primary education is much less than the average cost of not providing the schooling.
He says he hopes the study will prove to local governments and policy makers the value of a basic education for all children. And he says he hopes it will move them to provide that education to primary school age children in their country.

You'll start to question whether your goal is worth fighting for and guess what?100% of the time, it's worth it once you've achieved it.So keep your eye on the goal all the time.
They write their ideas down all the time. How to stay motivated to do more?Successful people do that by writing down their ideas all the time. Why? 38 You will never know whether one idea in your notebook could be the next revolutionary big thing.
39 Many successful people always have praises for their partners for getting them where they are today. If your partner is not supportive on things you want to achieve, communicate to find out why he/she doesn't like what you're doing. The end goal is to let your partner know that you'll put all your effort into getting a brighter future for both of you.
They have lots of fun.If fun is not part of your plan, you would probably lose sight of your goals easier. 40 If you simply do not enjoy doing what you do, how could you accomplish a tough goal?
A.They read a lot.
B.They have extremely supportive partners.
C.Taking everything too seriously is a sure method for failure.
D.Soon you'll pass your negative comment to your colleagues.
E.So what is stopping you from being motivated to achieve more?
F.Because they understand that ideas don't stay long in their heads.
G.Then you'll have enough time to plan your day before starting work.

Sometimes teachers and parents also go to the prom. But others like to go with friends, to whom they are soon going to be saying goodbye.
If you like the idea of a prom, why don't you and your classmates organize one for your graduation?

Introduction & Reading — Pre-reading
A
I was very excited on the first day of high school! I had P.E. for the first period.
