Module 4 Music
Liu Fang is recognised as one of the most successful pipa players as well as a sensitive performer on the guzheng. She has cooperated with world?class musicians all around the world and has released several albums. The following article is written by her about how she thinks of performances and her understanding of music.
While music is often about expressing mood and feeling, it is fascinating to experience how musicians who play different instruments come together to create a great piece of music. It is inspiring and creative, particularly when organisers provide enough time for musicians to rehearse (排练) before concerts. We have a lot to discuss and always bring our work to another level. This is especially true when musicians meet with an open heart, willing to learn from each other and not simply satisfied with things just sounding “okay”.
For my concerts, I play mostly traditional Chinese music. This type of music is often closely linked to poetry. As poetry, it sets out to express human feelings and purify (净化) the mind. This type of music was noncommercial, typically played solo on private occasions for oneself, or for Zhi Yin — close friends and music lovers. The music is supposed to be played in a calm state, and the feeling and energy are present and should remain fresh even when performers are repeating the “same old pieces”.
The challenge here is the current trend of looking for “new”. In fact, the “old” music has great value. While there is nothing wrong with creating new — and indeed, today's good creation will be tomorrow's tradition — it is misleading to use this to judge music?making. Even for the same piece, every performance is “original and new”, not to mention the different environments and audiences. In a real sense, one can't separate music from musician. When the musician dies, his or her music no longer exists. Recording is not the real thing. That is repeating, not music?making, which is very different from painting.

An Interview with Liu Fang
Part 1
Liu Fang is an international music star, famous for① her work with traditional Chinese instruments. She was born in 1974 and has played the pipa since the age of six. She's given concerts② since she was eleven, including③ a performance for the Queen of England during her visit to China. She graduated from④ the Shanghai Conservatory⑤ of Music, where she also studied the guzheng in 1993⑥.
What is your musical training and background?
My mother is a Dianju actress. Dianju is a kind of Chinese opera, which includes singing, dancing and acting⑦. When I was a child, she took me to performances⑧. I listened to music before I could speak! When I was five years old, she taught me to play⑨ the yueqin.
In 1990, when I was 15 years old, I went to the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, where I studied the pipa and the guzheng⑩. After I graduated, I went back to my hometown of Kunming and worked as? a pipa soloist? of the Kunming Music and Dance Troupe. In 1996, I moved to Canada with my husband and I have been living? there since then.

What are the biggest challenges? of playing the pipa and the guzheng?
If your technique is not good enough, it is impossible to play classical Chinese pipa music?. Also, the repertoire? for the pipa is large — some pieces were written during the Tang Dynasty.
There are many different pipa schools, and each one has its special way? of interpreting? the classical pieces. The biggest challenge is to respect the traditions but to add my own style. The same is true of? my second instrument, the guzheng.
?challenge n.挑战
take up a challenge接受挑战
rise to the challenge迎接挑战
?If your technique is not good enough是条件状语从句;it is impossible to do sth.“做某事是不可能的”,it作形式主语,动词不定式短语作真正的主语。

?(the) way of doing [=(the) way to do]做……的方法
?interpret/In't??prIt/v.
?(be) true of/for与……
Part 2
Who or what are your musical influences??
The main influence is traditional singing. I listened to traditional opera singing and folk songs in my childhood. Now when I am playing a tune, I am singing in my heart. When I'm playing a sad tune, I am crying in my heart. Listeners often say that they can hear singing in my music.
What characteristics of Chinese classical music do you try to show in your playing?
Firstly, Chinese music is similar to the Chinese language. In Chinese, the same pronunciation with different tones has different meanings. The same is true for music. Secondly, classical Chinese music is closely connected to Chinese poetry, so it isn't surprising that most classical pieces have very poetic titles. Thirdly, classical Chinese music and traditional Chinese painting are like twin sisters. In Chinese art, there are some empty spaces, which are very important. They give life to the whole painting and they allow people to come into the picture, like a dialogue.
It's the same with classical Chinese music. There are empty spaces, and people say the silence is full of music. The pipa sounds and the pauses combine to make a poetry of sound. Listeners can experience the power and the beauty of the music, like enjoying a beautiful poem or painting.
?influence n.影响
have an influence on对……

Part 3
What do you like best about performing live?
I enjoy playing and I enjoy performing in public. I like the atmosphere in a concert hall and I always feel happy when I have a concert. I feel a little depressed or lonely when there is no concert for a long time. I also enjoy the time immediately after the concert to share the feelings and ideas with friends and music lovers, listening to their impressions and understanding about the music. I love my career. I also enjoy travelling: I enjoy sitting in a plane dreaming, or staying in a hotel.,in public公开地,当众
depress/dI'pres/v.
share (the) feelings and ideas with与……
listening to ...
career n.
career soldier/teacher职业军人/教师
What are your goals as an artist?
I don't have a particular goal. But I hope to work with many composers, and I also wish to compose my own music. My background is traditional Chinese music. Since I moved to Canada, I have had opportunities to make contact with other musical traditions and play with master musicians. I wish to continue working with master musicians from other traditions and to be able to compose my own music, using elements from different cultures. I also wish to introduce classical Chinese pipa and guzheng music to every corner of the world.

element n.
using elements ...
introduce ...to把……

A
A couple of years ago, music psychologist Elizabeth Margulis decided to make some changes to the music of Luciano Berio. Berio was one of the most famous classical composers of the 20th century. After loading his most famous piece into a computer editing program, she just randomly started cutting.
The idea behind this act was simple: Margulis wanted to see if she could make people like Berio's music more by making it more repetitive.
Margulis knew that 90 percent of the music we listen to is music we've heard before. We return again and again to our favorite songs, listening over and over to the same musical riffs (重复乐段), which themselves repeat over and over inside the music, and she'd become obsessed with understanding why repetition is so compelling (引人入胜的). This is why she was razoring the music of Berio — because his music isn't at all repetitive.
We are drawn to repetition. It surrounds us, not just in modern American pop music, Margulis says, but everywhere. “Musical repetitiveness isn't really an individual feature of music that's arisen over the past few hundred years in the West,” she says. “It seems to be a cultural universal. Not only does every known human culture make music, but also, every known human culture makes music in which repetition is a defining (典型的) element.”
Why? One part of the answer is what's known as the mere exposure effect.
Psychologists have found that people tend to start off wary (谨慎的) of — or even unfriendly to — new things, which makes sense from an evolutionary perspective. But then the act of mere exposure changes our feelings. We typically feel more warmly toward things we encounter again and again.
So mere exposure is one of the reasons we respond so well to repetition — both of music and in music — but Margulis clearly doesn't think it's the whole story. She says repetition also allows us to shift (转移) our attention around, from the surface aspects of the music to other aspects. So basically, part of what the repetition in music allows us to do is leave ourselves. In some small way, it allows us to shift and adjust our reality. And reality can often use some adjusting.

One of the most significant parts of my high school career would be playing in the orchestra. I remember when I first started playing the viola (中提琴) in my school's program as an inexperienced fourth grader. As my interest in music grew, I decided to find a private instructor.
During my first lesson, I was surprised at what Dr. T was teaching — how to hold the viola and play open strings! To me, these were basic concepts I had long ago mastered. However, the following week, what I thought I had learned was completely disproven. With such high expectations, Dr. T criticized many aspects of my posture, intonation and bowing But as I became more familiar with my viola, Dr. T started assigning me actual compositions. Meanwhile, I became more and more interested in our school's ensemble (合奏组).
I first decided to become a section leader in middle school, when we were given the opportunity to try out for our ensemble's first and second chairs. During the first class, our conductor, Mrs. V, introduced us to a section leader's responsibilities. These duties included helping others with the concert music and setting a good example. After discussion, I decided to try out and started preparing the assigned piece. Every day, I would practice for at least 45 minutes. Needless to say, this was easier said than done. It required a lot of concentration and will power. Regardless, by the end of the week, I had become more familiar with the music.
To my surprise, the audition (试听) process was more pleasant than I had imagined. As I unpacked my viola, I started to doubt my decision. However, when I entered Mrs. V's homely office, I felt more relaxed. By the end of my audition, Mrs. V said that I had a good chance of becoming the principal violist! The next day, during orchestra, I learned that indeed, I had become our section's first chair.
5.Before the author studied under Dr. T, she ________.
A.had never played the viola
B.had expressed interest in music
C.had written some compositions
D.had been a promising young artist
由第一段的“As my interest in music grew, I decided to find a private instructor.”
6.The underlined word “disproven” in Paragraph 2 can be replaced by “________”.
A.lazy B.wrong
C.foolish D.surprised
由第二段的“these were basic concepts I had long ago mastered”和“Dr. T criticized many aspects of ...”
7.Which of the following can best describe the author?
A.Unusual and scholarly.
B.Self?centered and proud.
C.Independent and optimistic.
D.Hard?working and determined.
由第三段的“Every day, I would practice for at least 45 minutes ... It required a lot of concentration and will power.”
8.When attending the audition, the author ________.
A.felt confident of succeeding
B.received some careers guidance
C.left a good impression on Mrs. V
D.remembered her first viola instructor

Who could have imagined that a treadmill (跑步机) on wheels would one day become a thing? Lopifit is an unusual means of transportation that allows you to power an electric bicycle by walking on a treadmill.
Lopifit founder Bruin Bergmeester says it all started when he asked himself the question, “How can I use a treadmill outdoors?” He eventually came up with a design, to which he added an electric engine, and Lopifit was born. The treadmill bicycle is similar to a typical electric bicycle in that the motor (发动机) only works when the rider puts power in as well. The Lopifit senses it when you walk on the treadmill and uses the motor to turn a drive chain at the back part of the treadmill, helping you reach a top speed of 17 miles per hour.
To use the Lopifit, simply turn on the battery and use your feet to slide the treadmill backwards and activate (激活) the motor. Then get on and enjoy the ride! If you need speed, just walk on the treadmill, and if you want to coast, all you have to do is stay still and admire the view. To stop, you have two hand brakes available.
The Lopifit first hit the streets in 2014 and, unsurprisingly, became an instant hit. That was actually quite challenging for the company, because it started getting calls for orders, but it was nowhere near ready for mass production The unique treadmill bicycle became available this year, and Lopifit is struggling to keep up with demand, despite the high price tag of D|S2,115.
But despite having a very loyal fan?base of so?called Lopifitters, the creative means of transportation also has naysayers who simply consider the invention stupid and unnecessary. They basically believe that if you're going to walk, you might as well do it the old?fashioned way. But the Lopifit does have the unique advantage of helping you “walk” really fast without breaking a sweat, or walking at cycling speed, if you will.
9.With the help of Lopifit, you can ________.
A.answer some hard questions
B.offer power to any bicycle
C.create a treadmill on wheels
D.cycle to work by walking
10.From the second paragraph, we can learn ________.
A.how Lopifit was born
B.where Lopifit can be used
C.who Lopifit was intended for
D.which design is suitable for Lopifit
根据第二段的“it all started when he asked himself the question,‘How can I use a treadmill outdoors?’”
11.What can be learned from the fourth paragraph?
A.The supply of Lopifit failed to meet the demand.
B.It was hard for the company to design Lopifit.
C.Lopifit was cheap and available in 2014.
D.Lopifit always broke down on the streets.
根据第四段的“That was actually quite challenging ... nowhere near ready for mass production (大规模生产).”
12.How do the public react to Lopifit?
A.Positively. B.Variously.
C.Angrily. D.Cautiously.
根据最后一段“But despite having a very loyal ... consider the invention stupid and unnecessary.”

It is common to experience culture shock when living in a foreign country for a period of time. Here are some ways to overcome culture shock in a foreign country.
Keep an open mind. __1__ Withholding (保留) judgment will allow you to be an objective observer and will help understand different things. Also, if you are going to a country which you know nothing about, do a little background information. As you learn about the country where you are going, keeping an open mind is necessary.
__2__ Do not explain behavior from the view of your own society. Behavior is not data. For example, Americans often use the phrase “How are you?” to mean “hello” or “I notice you as I pass you in the hall”. Americans often walk away directly before one has a chance to answer the question. Foreigners may wonder why people walk away before the question about one's health gets answered. __3__ But an American would not be upset that someone did not respond to this question.
Do not take cultural familiarity or knowledge at face?value Even as you become familiar with customs in your new environment, be careful not to base an explanation on what you now believe you know. __4__ It takes a long time to really understand a culture in its social and historical context.

Street Music
It's a warm Saturday afternoon in a busy side road① in the old district of Barcelona. The pedestrians② are standing in a semi?circle③ around someone or something in front of the cathedral④. I push my way through⑤ the crowd and find a quartet⑥ of musicians playing a violin suite⑦ of classical music⑧. The session⑨ lasts ten minutes. Then one of the musicians picks up⑩ a saucer? on the ground, and asks for money. All contributions? are voluntary?, no one has to pay, but the crowd shrinks? ?as some people slide away?. But others happily throw in a few coins. They're grateful for this brief interval? of music as they go shopping?.
Below the window of my apartment in Paris, a music man takes a place? made vacant? by an earlier musician. He raises the lid of his barrel organ and turns the handle. Then he sings the songs of old Paris, songs of the people and their love affairs. I remember some of the words even though I have never consciously learnt them. I tap my feet and sing along with him. Down there on the pavement, few passersby stop. Some smile, others walk past with their heads down. Cars pass, gangs of boys form and disappear, someone even puts a coin in the cup on the organ. But the music man ignores them all. He's hot in the sun, so he mops his head with a spotted handkerchief. He just keeps singing and turning the handle.

In Harlem, New York, some locals place a sound system by an open window. They plug it into the electrical socket, and all of a sudden, there's dancing in the streets. In downtown Tokyo, young couples eat popcorn and dance to the music of a rockabilly band, which plays American music from the Fifties. In the London Underground a student plays classical guitar music, which echoes along the tunnels. It lifts the spirits of the passengers, who hurry past on their way to work. In a street in Vienna or Prague or Milan a group of pipe musicians from the far Andes fill the air with the sounds of South America.
The street musician is keeping alive a culture which has almost disappeared in our busy, organised, and regulated lives: the sound of music when you least expect it. In a recording studio, even when relayed by microphone, music loses some of its liveliness. But street music gives life to everyone who listens and offers relief from the cares of the day. It only exists in the present, it only has meaning in the context. It needs space.

Drawing upon? more than 1,500 years of Chinese music, Twelve Girls Band mixes this rich tradition with? classical, folk and contemporary sounds. The group signifies? the symbolic choice of a dozen members found in various aspects of Chinese numerology with 12 months in a year, and in ancient mythology, 12 jinchai (golden hairpins, which represent womanhood). Inspiration also comes from yuefang, the female chamber orchestras that played in the royal courts of the Tang Dynasty.
Each member of Twelve Girls Band has classical training, with backgrounds that include the China Academy of Music, the Chinese National Orchestra, and the Central Conservatory of Music. Skilled multi? instrumentalists, they perform on traditional Chinese instruments that include the guzheng, the yangqin, the erhu, the pipa and the dizi and xiao.
The group's appeal is equally as broad, with children, teens, adults and grandparents filling arenas to see it perform. American critics noticed the mixture of pieces by Mozart and Beethoven, with jazz standards like Dave Brubeck's Take Five, or a version of a much?loved classic such as Simon and Garfunkel's El Condor Pasa.
The group honours its musical heritage and shows a genuine love for all styles of music — from complex classical works to long?lasting pop tunes.

Six?time Grammy nominee (候选人) singer/song?writer Brandy Clark got into music young. Until the age of five years old, her family listened to records instead of watching TV. At nine, she picked up the guitar and at age 11, she started singing in her first band. However, Clark didn't get serious about music until college.
Clark has always loved country music for its epic lyric quality. She moved to Nashville and started out writing but never gave up her dream of being a performing artist in her own right. Roughly three years ago, Clark achieved her goal with her first album 12 Stories. On June 10, 2016, Clark released her second album Big Day in a Small Town. Clark said her favorite song was Crazy by Willy Nelson. She believes his song will last for years to come and hopes to have the same for her own music.
Many artists find the hardest part of the business is the concern from their friends and families. After all, the saying “poor starving artist” isn't popular without reason. Clark has always had a supportive family and friends and has been lucky enough not to confront that particular doubt. For her, the hardest part of the music industry is struggling to find a new way to say something that has been said. She said it could feel like pushing a rock uphill. However, performing in front of a live audience makes everything worth it to Clark. She succeeds in knowing that she can do something that connects with people.
Clark grew up in Washington about two hours south of Seattle. She loves her town and didn't want to move away but her dream moved her. She says, “Choosing to follow singing was the best and the hardest thing I ever did.” Now she spends most of her time touring and loves moving around. She particularly enjoys going to bed in one city and waking up in another. Those cities love her too as she just finished a run of sold out shows.

A.Face. B.Think.
C.Hate. D.Raise.

Ever since appearing on the music scene, Nicki Minaj has been called hip?hop's version of pop star Lady Gaga. From her colorful clothes and wigs (假发) to her stage shows, it's not hard to see the similarities, but the 34?year?old US singer says that she is different.
“She's made her own lane for herself and I respect that, but I have my own lane, too, and we never cross
paths — ever!” Minaj told Nightline.
Minaj has achieved fame quickly with her rap. On April 21 she appeared in Time's list of the 100 most influential people alongside Hollywood actor Leonardo DiCaprio and UK singer Adele.
Minaj is known for her energetic rapping style. She uses metaphors (暗喻) and wordplay so well in her work that The New York Times described her as a great rapper with a gift for funny accents and unexpected turns of phrase.
Raised in New York City, the young Minaj wanted to become an actress. But her acting career failed to take off. Dealing with a lack of money, in addition to her parents' fighting, Minaj turned to music as a way to escape — she rapped on the streets and posted her songs on the Internet.
She was discovered by Wayne in 2009 and her real fame came from her first album Pink Friday. It topped the US Billboard charts soon after its release in late 2010.
Although Minaj has managed to pick up award after award, she is no stranger to controversy (争议) over her bold fashion choices and performances. But she has no plans to change. Clearly, confidence and strong will are the most important parts of her makeup.
Her strong personality has also seen her create her own musical style, whether everyone likes it or not. “Most artists in this business are so scared of thinking outside the box that they will remain in one little box for their whole careers,” she told MTV News, “but I feel that as women, we have got to dare to be different.”
1.Which aspects of Nicki Minaj are mentioned in the passage?
a.her musical style B.her strong personality
c.how she wrote her songs D.how she rose to fame
A.a,b,c B.a,c,d
C.b,c,d D.a,b,d
2.What can we know about Nicki Minaj according to the passage?
A.She keeps a low profile so she doesn't cause much controversy.
B.Her talent for using metaphors and wordplay has made her a great rapper.
C.She has to change her singing style in order to be accepted.
D.She has encouraged other artists to stick to the styles they have chosen.
根据第四段中的“She uses metaphors (暗喻) and wordplay so well in her work that The New York Times described her as a great rapper”可知B项表述正确。
3.What leads to success according to Nicki's story?
A.Difference from others.
B.A gift for singing.
C.Confidence and strong will.
D.Following influential people.
由倒数第二段中的“confidence and strong will are the most important parts of her makeup”可知,妮琪·米娜的自信和坚强的意志力使得她走上了成功之路。
4.Which is the best title for this passage?
A.Nicki staying different
B.Nicki becoming popular
C.Nicki's similarities with Lady Gaga
D.Nicki's success in music

The recent most popular song in schools is the folk song Chengdu which is composed and sung by Zhao Lei. The singer accompanies himself on the guitar. The song is set in the capital city of Sichuan Province, Chengdu, where people live a leisure and comfortable life. The melody of Chengdu is slow, while the lyrics describe many details of the city, arousing the same feelings of common people.

Module 4 Music
No music, no life! Music can help us relax, give life to those who are depressed and offer relief from a day's hard work. Most people like appreciating music or dancing to the music. Today we'll introduce a band and a pipa and guzheng soloist.
The band is named Twelve Girls Band, founded in June 2001. At first it wasn't famous, but all of a sudden it became popular in Japan. Now the band has become one of the most popular groups at home and abroad. The members of Twelve Girls Band come from such famous colleges and universities as China Academy of Music and Central Conservatory of Music. Drawing upon over 1,500 years of Chinese music, the band charms the world. They have been presented with awards many times. Their records have become its fans' collections. The band honours its music heritage and shows a genuine love for all styles of music.
The soloist is Liu Fang, an international music star. In addition to pipa, she also plays guzheng. She is good at playing folk songs. Meanwhile, she combines Chinese traditional music with western music. Liu Fang had a great gift for music as a child, therefore her mother sent her to play pipa. She has given concerts since 11. While playing pipa, the biggest challenge is to respect traditions and add her own style. The same is true of guzheng. Now, Liu Fang lives in Canada, where she often makes contacts with master musicians, sharing feelings and ideas with them. She's also voluntary to give some bands directions. Regarding her ambition she wants to compose music and introduce Chinese classical music to every corner of the world.,

A.She keeps a low profile so she doesn't cause much controversy.
B.Her talent for using metaphors and wordplay has made her a great rapper.
C.She has to change her singing style in order to be accepted.
D.She has encouraged other artists to stick to the styles they have chosen.

M: Hey, Joanne. What's up? Are you heading to the beach, too?
W: I'm trying to get there as fast as I can. I need to deposit some money at the bank and mail some letters at the post office. But first, I've really got to find a ladies' room!
(Text 2)
W: Have you looked in the mirror today?
M: Uh, not since I woke up this morning ... Why? Did I forget to do my hair or something?
W: Well, let's just say that green ties and pink shirts don't really mix ...
(Text 3)
M: I'm starving! What have you got to eat around here?
W: Um, not much. I really wasn't expecting anyone over, so ...
M: All you have in here is some salad and one of those health drinks that only girls drink ...
W: Look. I don't show up at your door without calling and criticize your food, do I?
(Text 4)
W: Do you have any idea what time it is now? Have you ever heard your phone?
M: I'm sorry. But my phone ran out of power. I got back here as fast as I could because I knew you'd be worried.
(Text 5)
W: Hi, James! It's me, Diane. Oh, I'm so glad I caught you. I was just talking to Drake, and ...
M: I'm sorry. But I think you dialed the wrong number. My name is Daniel.
(Text 6)
M: What's the matter with you? You look miserable.
W: It's us.
M: What do you mean “us”?
W: Well, we used to talk to each other before we were married. Remember?
M: What do you mean? We're talking now, aren't we?
W: Oh, yes, but we used to do so much together.
M: We still go to the cinema together, don't we?
W: Yes, but we used to go out for walks together. Remember?
M: Oh, I can remember.
W: And we used to do silly things, like running barefoot through the park.
M: Yes. I remember. I used to catch terrible colds.
W: But we never used to argue. You used to think I was wonderful. Once ... Where are you going?
M: Back to live with my parents. That's something else we used to do before we were married. Remember?
(Text 7)
M: Can you see how close we are on the map?
W: It looks like we're pretty close, but these smartphone maps are hard to read.
M: Yeah, I always prefer to look at a paper map. I think I still have some in the pocket of the right door, if you wanna grab one ...
W: No, I'd probably be even worse at that. Uh?oh, I think you were supposed to turn left back there.
M: You mean that you were supposed to tell me to turn left back there?
W: Yeah, I'm sorry. I don't have one of these kinds of phones, so I'm afraid I don't really know what I'm doing. Do you want to pull over and take a look?
M:No. It's okay. Just push that little button on the side of the phone to turn on the sound. That will allow us to hear the directions out loud.

W: Brett, can I ask you a question about your dog?
M: Sure. What's up?
W: Well, I have to get my little Ferguson some medicine.
M: Oh, is everything all right?
W: Yes, of course. It's not like he's sick or anything. I give him medicine every month as part of his regular care, so he doesn't get any diseases from insects or other dogs.
M: Oh, right. I do that for Fargo, too.
W: Yeah. That was what I was going to ask you about. Where do you buy your dog's medicine? I asked my vet, and she told me the prices. I almost dropped dead right there!
M: Yeah. Unfortunately, most special pet stores sell them at fixed prices that are set by the companies that make them. You can usually find discounts of ten or fifteen percent for a lot of those stores, though.
W: Well, that's not a huge help for something that's two hundred dollars per year! Isn't there any other way?
M: Well, you can order some medicines from websites that are based in other countries where the prices are lower.
(Text 10)
This is the Lakewood Public Address System. This is not a test like the one we had last week. I repeat, this is not a test. The Western Hill Fire is spreading toward Lakewood much quicker than we had expected. Currently, we expect the fire to come within twenty miles of Lakewood by six o'clock this evening. We are therefore requiring all residents to leave this area immediately.
Springfield to the north, Point Cabina Station to the east, and Galveston to the south are all in the safe zone. It will take less than thirty minutes to drive to any of these towns. Take as many things as you can fit in your car, but do not delay. We have orders from the state police to make sure that the entire town of Lakewood is empty by five o'clock today. You have plenty of time to get all your family members, pets, and belongings together, so there is no need to panic. Stay calm, but get started as soon as possible.

If you're a high school student, you may tend to measure your self?worth based on your popularity and status. You may feel depressed or disappointed if you have a difficult time fitting in or if you lack the confidence to talk to others. If you want others to like you, you'll need to have a healthy understanding of how people think, what appeals to them and how you can gain their approval. There are four tips on how to be popular in high school. And if you are popular with your classmates, you can get many benefits from them.
You must be yourself in order to gain any real popularity in high school. While imitation is the sincerest form of flattery (奉承), copying another's style and personality will have a negative effect on your popularity. If you're not comfortable enough to be yourself 100 percent of the time, others won't feel comfortable around you. If you establish your own style and personality and stay true to yourself, popularity will soon follow.
Make yourself approachable to appeal to others and be popular in high school. People love to be around others who are confident and ready to have a good time. Hold your head up high, keep your shoulders back, and smile as you walk with an air of confidence to instantly attract others and increase your popularity.
Be friendly and kind to everyone you meet. It's not enough to gain the approval of the other popular students in your school. In order to gain real popularity, you'll need to be kind and polite to everyone you meet. Make an effort to talk to your classmates regardless of their popularity or economic status and try to develop friendships with them. The more people you appeal to, the more popular you'll become.
Involve yourself in school activities that interest you. You can be popular in high school if you play an active role in your school's extracurricular activities The more you participate in group activities, the more popular you'll become.

25.Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?

D.How to Develop Friendship with Your Classmates

A.setting up your own style and personality will benefit your popularity

America is a mobile society. Friendships between Americans can be close and real, yet disappear soon if situations change. Neither side feels hurt by this. Both may exchange Christmas greetings for a year or two, perhaps a few letters for a while — then no more. If the same two people meet again by chance, even years later, they pick up the friendship. This can be quite difficult for us Chinese to understand, because friendships between us flower more slowly but then may become lifelong feelings, extending (延伸) sometimes deeply into both families.
Americans are ready to receive us foreigners at their homes, share their holidays, and their home life. They will enjoy welcoming us and be pleased if we accept their hospitality (好客) easily.
Another difficult point for us Chinese to understand Americans is that although they include us warmly in their personal everyday lives, they don't show their politeness to us if it requires a great deal of time. This is usually the opposite of the practice in our country where we may be generous_with_our_time. Sometimes, we, as hosts, will appear at the airport even in the middle of the night to meet a friend. We may take days off to act as guides to our foreign friends. The Americans, however, express their welcome usually at homes, but truly can not manage the time to do a great deal with a visitor outside their daily routine. They will probably expect us to get ourselves from the airport to our own hotel by bus. And they expect that we will phone them from there. Once we arrive at their homes, the welcome will be full, warm and real. We will find ourselves treated hospitably.
For the Americans, it is often considered more friendly to invite a friend to their homes than to go to restaurants, except for purely business matters. So accept their hospitality at home!

On July 10-12, 2017, a huge iceberg (冰山) named A?68 broke free from Antarctica's Larsen C Ice Shelf. The crack (裂痕) that led to the separation was observable in 1963. However, the crack remained inactive for decades before suddenly spreading northwards and widening by 18 miles between 2011 and 2015 and then an additional 13 miles in 2016.
Iceberg separation is not a natural part of a glacier's (冰川) life cycle but a result of global warming. However, the separation of A?68 is receiving a lot of attention due to its size. Measuring 5,800 square kilometers, the A?68 has reduced the Larsen C Ice Shelf area by more than 12%.
“The interesting thing is what happens next, how the remaining ice shelf responds,” said Kelly Brunt, who has studied the effects of the warming climate on the Larsen C Ice Shelf since 2015. “Many people may ask,‘Will the ice shelf weaken? Or will it fall down, like its neighbors Larsen A and B? Will the glaciers behind the ice shelf speed up and have a direct contribution to sea level rise?’ I think answers may be not that terrible.”
Ice shelves, which border 75% of the Antarctic Peninsula, form from snow that became ice thousands of years ago. They are found where glaciers meet the ocean and the weather is cold enough to keep the ice frozen. The icy structures are natural barriers against the water melting from glaciers, which can lead to rising sea levels.
The Larsen Ice Shelf once consists of four parts: Larsen A (the smallest), Larsen B, Larsen C (the largest) and Larsen D. While scientists will continue to monitor A?68 and its parent, many believe it'll take several years before Larsen C breaks down further. “The remaining 90% of the ice shelf continues to be held in place by two points,” said Chris Shuman, a glaciologist. “So I just don't see any signs that this event will lead to the falling down of the Larsen C Ice Shelf. But we will be watching closely for signs of further changes.”

To begin at, do some study with the phrases and sentence structures you have learned. Keep a list of them and make some sentences with them. And, in order to write well, you must do some readings every day. Beside, you have better recite some good passages, from which you can learn many beautiful sentences. What's more, keep a diary is also a effective way. You can have a try without delay and it's necessary to practise writing as often as possibly.

Introduction & Reading — Pre- reading
A
A couple of years ago, music psychologist Elizabeth Margulis decided to make some changes to the music of Luciano Berio.
