Module 6 War and Peace
On June 6,1944, allied (联盟的) troops from different countries invaded Normandy, France to Nazi Germany in World War Ⅱ. This is considered one of the most important events in the world. Here are some facts about D?Day that you should know, the first day of the invasion of Normandy during World War Ⅱ.
The invasion of northwest Europe was called Operation Overlord. The landing operations were called Operation Neptune and the actual day of the landings was referred to as D?Day. In preparation for the invasion, the actual day of the landings was not known in advance because it depended on the weather conditions. In fact, D?Day was originally scheduled for June 5 at that time, but the weather conditions were unsuitable for a landing. Thus the operation was pushed back to June 6,1944.
Over 150,000 soldiers were involved. They mainly came from the United States, the UK, France, Norway and Canada. The landing operation had two parts. First, more than 20,000 soldiers would be parachuted (伞降) into Normandy, and then would land from ships. About 5,000 ships and more than 10,000 planes were used.
Surprise was key to the success of the attack. The weather helped hide the invasion, as did missions called Operation Glimmer and Operation Taxable to make the Germans believe that the landing was going to take place at different beaches.
Operation Neptune began on June 6, 1944 (D?Day) and ended on June 30, 1944. It was a success. There were five key beaches along the Normandy's coastline. The troops gave these beaches names: Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword. The forces took control of the five key beaches, allowing major invasion force to be landed. Paris was freed from Nazi control on August 25,1944. The fighting on Omaha beach was the fiercest and many troops lost their lives as they tried to occupy the beaches.

The D?Day Landings — Passage 2
The soldiers of Able Company crossed the English Channel in seven boats early on the morning of 6 June 1944. When they were about 5 kilometres from the beach, the Germans started firing artillery shells at them but the boats were too far away. The Germans continued firing and Boat 5 was hit one kilometre from the beach. Six men drowned before help arrived. Twenty men fell into the water and were picked up by other boats. As a result, they missed the fighting on the beach. They were lucky. If they had reached the beach, they would probably have been killed.
When Boat 3 was a few metres from the beach, the soldiers jumped out, but the water was so deep that some of them disappeared under the water. Many of the men were either killed or wounded by machine gun fire.

The soldiers on Boat 1 and Boat 4 jumped into the water, but it was too deep and most of them drowned. Half an hour after the first attack, two thirds of the company (a company is a group of about 100 soldiers) were dead. The survivors lay on the beach, exhausted and shocked.
After an hour and forty?five minutes, six of the survivors tried to climb up the cliff to get off the beach. Four were too exhausted to reach the top. The other two, Private Jake Shefer and Private Thomas Lovejoy, joined a group from another company and fought with them. Two men. Two rifles. This was Able Company's contribution to D?Day.

Moutai Thanks the Hit Movie

Chinese box office hit Wolf Warrior Ⅱ has received a thank?you letter from the president of China Kweichow Moutai (Group) Distillery Co., Ltd, the country's most famous brand of liquor, because of the scenes where the hero drank Moutai liquor in the movie.
The movie, which premiered (首映) on July 27,2017, tells the story of a former Chinese People's Liberation Army soldier protecting Chinese citizens and local factory workers in an African war zone.
The patriotic (爱国的) emotions have proven popular with audiences. By the end of September, Wolf Warrior Ⅱ had earned more than 5.6 billion yuan, breaking China's all?time box office record, set last year by Hong Kong comedy The Mermaid. Wu Jing, 43, both starred in and directed Wolf Warrior Ⅱ, whose prequel (前传) earned 525 million yuan in 2015.
On August 7, Yuan Renguo, president of Kweichow Moutai, congratulated Wu Jing on his success in an open letter on the company's website. “The movie has hit a new record and become a phenomenon,” Yuan wrote. “The movie is now synonymous (相同的) with patriotism. Your free advertising of Moutai in the movie has once more allowed this famous Chinese brand to impress the world.”
Yuan also added that the company had organized screenings of the film for its more than 30,000 employees, which improved their feelings of nationalism and “company cohesion (凝聚力)”.

Tong Yemeng, a 32?year?old office worker from Beijing, told Sixth Tone that she watched the film because of positive reviews from her colleagues and on the social media. “I felt so moved and proud of my country when I saw Wu Jing waving the national flag in the war zone,” she said. “It showed our increasing national power.”

Two people, father and son, who had lived in total isolation (隔绝) from society for 40 years in a remote jungle in central Vietnam have been brought back to normal life. To survive, they ate fruits, corn and only had cloths made of tree barks. They even built a tree house.
They are Ho Van Thanh, 86, and his son, Ho Van Lang, 45, who were found by some local people while they were travelling in a deep forest.
Being very surprised by abnormal appearances, gestures and manners of the “jungle men”, these people reported their finding to the local government, who set up a team to look for them, and after five hours of search in the forest, caught the father and son staying in a small hut built on some branches of a large tree.
Due to being isolated from social contact for a long time, both the father and the son could only speak a little of the language of the local place.
After carrying out an investigation (调查) into the men's identity, they found that Thanh once lived a normal life with his family at a local village 40 years ago. But one day at that time, a bombing happened in the village, killing Thanh's mother and three of his four children on the spot. It is suspected that due to the shock, Thanh took his remaining son, 2 years old at the time, and ran away into this jungle. He and the son, now Ho Van Lang, had since lived their lonely life, without contact with anyone. Their daily foods were fruits and manioc they found in the forest. Thinking is something you choose to do as a fish chooses to live in water. To be humans is to think. But thinking may come naturally without your knowing how you do it. Thinking about thinking is the key to critical thinking When you think critically, you take control of your thinking processes. Otherwise, you might be controlled by the ideas of others. Indeed, critical thinking is at the heart of education.
The word “critical” here has a special meaning. It does not mean taking one view against another view, as when someone criticizes another person for doing something wrong. The nature of critical thinking is thinking beyond the easily seen — beyond the pictures on TV, the untrue reports in the newspapers and the faulty reasoning.
Critical thinking is an attitude as much as an activity. If you are curious about life and desire to dig deeper into it, you are a critical thinker. If you find pleasure in deep thinking about different ideas, characters, and facts, you are a critical thinker.
Activities of the mind and higher?order reasoning(推理) are processes of deep and careful consideration. They take time, and do not go hand in hand with the fast speed in today's world: fast foods, instant coffee, and self?developing film. If you are among the people who believe that speed is a measure of intelligence (智力), you may learn something_new from a story about Albert Einstein. The first time Banesh Hoffmann, a scientist, was to discuss his work with Albert Einstein, Hoffmann was too nervous to speak. But Einstein immediately put Hoffmann at ease by saying, “Please go slowly. I don't understand things quickly.”
9.Critical thinking is important to us because if we do not think critically, ________.
A.it will be hard for us to think naturally and fast
B.we might be influenced by other people's ideas
C.it will be easy for us to do something wrong
D.we might be fooled by other people's ideas
根据第一段中的“Otherwise, you might be controlled by the ideas of others.”
10.If you are a critical thinker, you will ________.
A.think deeply about different ideas
B.trust the reports in the newspapers
C.take one view against another view
D.criticize other people for their mistakes
根据第三段中的“If you find pleasure in deep thinking ... a critical thinker.” 故选A。
11.In the last paragraph, the underlined part “something new” suggests that ________.
A.the smarter you are, the faster you do things
B.the faster you do things, the smarter you become
C.speed can improve intelligence
D.intelligence is not decided by speed
根据最后一段中的“If you are among the people ... from a story about Albert Einstein.”和“Please go slowly. I don't understand things quickly.”
12.What will be the best title for the passage?
A.Thinking and Critical Thinking
B.Understanding Critical Thinking
C.Thinking Is Natural
D.Thinking Fast Means Intelligence
根据全篇文章尤其是第一段中的“Thinking about thinking is the key ... take control of your thinking processes.”

D?Day+2
To our astonishment①, just two days after we had received our confidential② orders to join the D?Day landing troops, and after a day fighting and seeing many of my friends killed by the enemy, we found ourselves outside a peaceful village in France③. It was so sudden, after the mess④ and confusion⑤ of war on the beach.
It was late afternoon, and the sun was setting⑥ on a perfect country scene of farm buildings, a main street, a few shops, a garage⑦ and a church. But we hesitated⑧ because we were aware that there might still have been⑨ enemy soldiers. Our lieutenant⑩ told Private Kowalski and me to advance? and check the village.

As we entered the main street?, a young woman on a tractor? drove out of the garage, saw us and called out something in French. Immediately five men came out of the bar, and two more? from a farmyard, holding guns. I took off? my helmet? and yelled?, “American! Put your guns down?!” They gathered round us, shouting and shaking our hands?. Some women appeared and kissed us.
We soon understood that the enemy had abandoned? the village, so Kowalski went back to the others to let them know it was safe. I walked into a barbershop and stroked my chin, to show I needed to shave. The barber had a magnificent moustache, which he used wax to keep in shape. He filled a tin with cold water, and took out a razor from a drawer. He used a leather sharpener on the razor, and then gave me the best shave I had had in years. When the rest of our company arrived, they unloaded their baggage and bedding while the villagers brought out some jars of wine, and laid a table in the middle of the street, which they then covered with plates of potatoes and carrots, ham and sausages. Someone shouted “Cheers!” in English and we all drank to liberation and to the French constitution. Some of our boys had never tasted wine before, and spat it out, thinking it was vinegar.
We gave stockings to the women, which they loved, and in return, they gave us perfume for our girlfriends. I was too ashamed to admit that I was too young to have a girlfriend. Winston Churchill's Speeches
Winston Churchill is well?known as① a statesman②, politician and as the British Prime Minister during most of the Second World War.
A month later, the Germany army had advanced across northern Europe, and the British Army had retreated? to the coast of the English Channel. The only escape? was to cross the sea back to England. Hundreds of small boats set out? from ports on the English coast to bring back the soldiers from the beaches of Dunkirk in France. But Churchill encouraged people that this was only a temporary defeat in a speech which included the words, “We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender.”
On 18 June 1940, Churchill gave another fine speech when he drew attention to the courage of everyone defending Britain. “In years to come,” he said, “... men will say, ‘This was their finest hour.’”

The Germans continued their attacks on Britain from the air. A small number of pilots resisted the much larger German Air Force. Germany lost many airplanes, and was forced to change their strategy. Britain was no longer threatened by an early invasion, and on 20 August 1940, he said, “Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few.”
In two years, Germany began to lose some important battles. After a defeat in North Africa, on 10 November 1942 he made a speech with the famous words, “Now this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning.”

John Nelson, 92, grew up in Michigan and volunteered for the army in 1945. The 18?year?old managed to get accepted, despite being colorblind. He landed on the island of Iwo Jima in the first days of the American attack to take the island from the Japanese. Nelson fought day and night for 10 days before receiving a serious wound to his right arm. The other seven men in his squadron (中队) all died. American losses included 5,900 dead and 17,400 wounded.
Nelson saw the American flag being raised on Mount Suribachi after the island was taken by the American forces. The arm would continue to trouble him the rest of his life. Suffering from anxiety and flashbacks, he was diagnosed with post?traumatic stress disorder
Al Elders was a Grandville farm boy. He joined the Navy and was stationed on Guam when the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki on August 6 and 9, 1945, basically ended the war with Japan.
War often develops lasting friendships. But for the two World War Ⅱ veterans (老兵) living at Sunset Manor in Jenison, their friendship didn't begin until about a year and a half ago. One day, Elders noticed a man sitting at a cafeteria in the Sunset Village, and that was Nelson. Seeing his Marine cap, Elders thought they would have something to talk about. And they did. The war in the Pacific is a common bond.
The two men later worked together to serve other residents (居民) at Sunset Manor. John began detailing cars during good weather and cleaning walkers in the winter. Elders became his advertising manager. They donated most of their incomes to the Wounded Warrior project. John is less mobile now and is in care at Sunset. Al continues to visit and to encourage his friend. A friend of Elders' who traveled to Iwo Jima brought back a jar filled with sand from the rocky island. Elders sent the gift, along with his own wartime collections, to the Seabee Museum and Memorial Park.

Most of us now have more than one online social media platform that we often use. They all have a place for you to show your best face in the form of a profile (简介) photo. A satisfying photo can make any visitor to your social media pages feel good about you at first sight. But, according to a new study, we may not be the best judge of our own profile pictures.
Researchers asked 100 university students to choose images that they would most likely use as profile pictures on social networks. They found that the participants picked the trait (特点) of attractiveness for a dating site and professionalism for a career site. They decided what to emphasize (强调) in this way. Next, the students were asked to perform the same task for a stranger in the group. At last, researchers showed these images to online viewers and asked them to rate how confident, trustworthy or able the person in them appeared.
The online viewers tended to favor the photos that were chosen by strangers rather than those chosen by the people themselves. Researchers suggested that strangers are better at choosing true images that show a person's current appearance. One idea is that people tend to think themselves more positively than others do. This may affect their ability to distinguish (区分) when trying to select a satisfying photo. Module 6 War and Peace
In September, 1939, Germany invaded and occupied Poland, which marked the beginning of the Second World War. The war lasted for about 7 years. Later, many countries, including Britain, declared war on Germany. Numerous privates died. Despite this, the survivors still think their sacrifice and efforts worthwhile.
The most important and memorable battle of the war was Operation Overlord. The situation at Omaha Beach where American troops landed was so bad that its commanders even thought about abandoning the operation. To our great astonishment, eventually, the soldiers made a breakthrough with great courage and the D?Day landing was successful. During the landing, some soldiers drowned in the deep water, others wounded by the bullets or shells. Fortunately, some soldiers were picked up. When some old soldiers think of the scene now, they still feel shocked and frightened. On 6 June, 2004, survivors with different nationalities of the D?Day landing returned to France to watch the cemetery and memorial overlooking Omaha Beach to remember their lost comrades.
Nowadays, most people long for peace and condemn war. Peace is the very thing that most countries have gone after.

Moreover, it appears that people overemphasize the trait of attractiveness compared with other traits, such as trustworthiness and kindness, which are characters that strangers often focus on.
Still, there are a number of questions to be answered. Researchers have not yet begun to examine which photos can bring actual benefits in life or workplaces. But if you want to put your best face forward, you can ask someone else to choose your next profile picture.

M:What is your working time?
W:I work from 9 to 6 from Monday to Friday and on Saturday I work from 10 to 5.
(Text 2)
W:Sahara has been very sad these days.
M:What's the matter with her?
W:She's all right, but her grandma passed away.
(Text 3)
W:Front desk. Can I help you?
M:Yeah, hi. This is Room 201. Is your dining room still open?
W:I'm sorry, sir. The dining room closes at 10:30.
M:Thank you.
(Text 4)
W:John, good news. Here's a letter for you.
M:Thanks a lot.
W:It's always exciting to get letters.
M:That's true. But it's always tiring to write letters.
(Text 5)
W:I hope you remembered to pick up my clothes from the cleaners.
M:I couldn't go because my car wouldn't start.
(Text 6)
W:In order to reduce crimes in the city, I think we should employ more policemen.
M:I don't think so. Only education works. What are you doing here? You seem to be so happy.
W:Oh yeah, I'm stealing other people's crops.
M:How can you do that on the Internet?
W:Of course I can. You know, there is a special website here for you to grow and steal crops. It's great fun.
(Text 7)
W:Have you heard the city has passed a law against walking dogs in the streets?
M:Sure, it's published in the newspapers.
W:It means that dogs have to be kept inside all the time.
M:It's rather cruel, isn't it? We shouldn't be so cruel to dumb animals.
W:But dogs often leave a mess everywhere.
M:But owners can clean up the mess.
W:Would they?
M:Perhaps the best solution is to build a dog park. Then people can walk their dogs there.
W:Sounds too good to be realistic. The city is already too crowed without dogs.
(Text 8)
W:When are you going to take your vacation?
M:I've got a ten?day vacation starting from July 25th.
W:Where are you going?
M:To Hawaii.
W:That sounds like a good place. Is your family going?
M:Yes. We plan to climb the mountains, go fishing, swimming, and wind surfing, just to relax. My wife is taking a whole bunch of books to read.
W:Your children must be all excited about it.
M:Yes, they are. They're already crossing out days on the calendar. Are you going to Europe again this summer?
W:No, not this time. We're going to visit some old friends in Egypt.
M:Are you going by ship or taking a flight?
W:We're going by air.
(Text 9)
Young people and older people do not always agree. They sometimes have different ideas about living, working and playing. But in one special program in New York State, adults and teenagers live together in a friendly way.
Each summer 200 teenagers and 50 adults live together for eight weeks as members of a special work group. Everyone works several hours each day. They do so not just to keep busy but to find meaning and fun in work. Some teenagers work in the forests or on the farms near the village. Some learn to make things like tables and chairs and to build houses. The adults teach them these skills. There are several free hours each day. Weekends are free, too. During the free hours some of the teenagers learn photo?taking or drawing. Others sit around and talk or sing. Each teenager chooses his own way to pass his free time.
When people live together, they should have rules. In this program the teenagers and the adults make the rules together. If someone breaks a rule, the problem goes before the whole group. They talk about it and ask, “Why did it happen? What should we do about it?”
One of the teenagers has said something about it, “You have to stop thinking only about yourself. You learn how to think about the group.”
(Text 10)
If someone offered to pay all my expenses for a month's holiday anywhere in the world, I would feel very surprised and very excited. I think I would decide to fly around the world and to visit three different countries. The countries I would visit would be Australia, the United States of America and Kenya. If I went to Australia, I would stay there for about two weeks. Before I went, I would write to one of my Australian friends. I would suggest that if it were possible, he should spend a week with me visiting Aboriginal tribes in the northern part of Australia. My friend could explain what we saw and he could translate what people said because he majored in Aboriginal Studies at Queensland University. If I went to the United States, I would stay there for about a week. I expect I would start by visiting New York. I have heard that New York is a very exciting city. After I had stayed for two or three days in New York, I would fly to San Francisco. I hope I could stay with my friends who live there and I would visit the city and other parts of California. Finally, I would fly to Kenya where I would stay for about a week. There are three things I would like to do in Kenya. First, I hope I could visit the coast. Next, I would like to visit a game reserve. I imagine the wild animals of Africa — the lion, elephant and hippopotamus — are very exciting and beautiful. Finally, I would like to visit the Mountains of Kenya where you can see snow on the Equator. If someone offered me this money, I would be amazed. Unfortunately, I do not think this will ever happen and I doubt if I shall ever visit these countries.

Up to now, some scientists have suggested that cloning existing people might be ethically acceptable in some cases. One possibility is generating replacement for a dying relative. All such possibilities, however, raise the concern that the clone would be treated as less than a complete individual, because he or she would likely suffer from limitations and expectations based on the family's knowledge of the genetic “twin”. Those expectations might be false, because human personality is only partly determined by genes. The clone of an extrovert (性格外向的人) could have a quite different way of behavior.Clones for athletes, movie stars, or scientists might well choose different careers because of chance events in early life.
Some people have also pointed out that couples in which one member is infertile (不生育) might choose to make a copy of one or the other partner. But society ought to be concerned that a couple might not treat naturally a child who is a copy of just one of them.Because other methods are available for the treatment of all known types of infertility, and the traditional choice seems more appropriate.None of the suggested uses of cloning for making copies of existing people is ethically acceptable to my way of thinking, because they are not in the interests of the resulting child. It should go without saying that I am strongly opposed to allowing cloned human embryos to develop so that they can be tissue donors.
In spite of this, it seems clear that cloning from cultured (人工培育的) cells will offer important medical opportunities. Predictions about new technologies are often wrong; societal attitudes change; unexpected developments occur.Time will tell. But biomedical researchers looking into the potential of cloning now have plenty to do.
25.Towards cloning an existing person, what concern does the author show ?
A.The clone created is unlikely to fulfill your expectations.
B.The clone created is ethically unacceptable.

D.The clone created will have one defect or another.

D.One's personality is determined by the environment they live in.
27.What is the author's attitude towards cloning technology?
A.It should wait till people's views change.
B.It should be condemned.
C.It was unethical from the very beginning.
D.It has medical potential for scientists to explore.

There are many things that go into making a successful school, and success can be measured in many ways. Often, the teachers are praised for a school's success and blamed for its failure. Yet, in order for a school to be effective, it must be a place where teaching and learning can easily take place, and that requires the hard work of more than just educators. Students must take learning into their own hands and feel as if what they are doing is as important as it actually is. This can only be done with the cooperation of every adult that is involved in the students' life. Some of these individuals often go unnoticed, yet the role they play in the students' lives is immeasurable.
Administrative assistants welcome students at the beginning of the day and answer a large number of questions. When an assistant remembers a student's name or even something special about that student, it communicates to him that he is cared for. The assistant can also give that extra encouragement for a student to make better choices, especially when they are visiting the principal's office.
Cafeteria workers have a short period of time to interact with students, but can make a big difference as well. Beyond meeting nutritional needs, cafeteria workers may also on occasion meet the emotional needs of the students they serve. Students benefit from positive interaction with adults, and cafeteria workers may give that extra bit of encouragement that a child needs.
Custodians (管理人员) are often underappreciated for all that they give to schools. They have to be knowledgeable about everything from cleaning to fixing the most intricate (复杂的) tools. They get to school early in the morning before teachers arrive and lock up late at night after the last student has left from the after?school event. They also make sure teachers are equipped with the necessary items and prepare the rooms so that they are ready for learning. A great custodian also gives that kind word or extra smile to that student who needs it most.
28.If an assistant remembers a student's name, the student will feel that ______.
A.he is cared for
B.he is special
C.he has done something wrong
D.he has made progress in study
29.Which of the following is TRUE about cafeteria workers?
A.It's enough for them to cook for the students.
B.It's hard for them to interact with the students.
C.They can also meet the emotional needs of the students.
D.They have the most interaction with students at school.
30.We learn from the fourth paragraph that ______.

The tombs of Pompeii, the Roman city buried by a volcanic eruption (火山喷发) in A. D. 79, are quite special. Animal bones, broken potteries (陶器) and architectural material, such as bricks, were found crowded inside and outside the tombs where the city's dead were laid to rest.
To explain the condition, some brought out a theory that 15 years before the eruption, an earthquake left Pompeii in disorder. But archaeological evidence shows that the city wasn't forsaken by its people. Instead of leaving, citizens appeared to have rebuilt the public spaces and houses. “It just didn't make sense that garbage would mean the tombs weren't being used,” said Allison Emmerson from University of Cincinnati. She suggested that we shouldn't judge Pompeii by modern standards, which never encourage being messy in life. “Attitudes toward the garbage are very culturally defined, and it looks like in Pompeii attitudes were very different from ours,” said Emmerson.
The same sort of garbage was also found in the city streets of Pompeii, along the walls of the city, and even on the floors of homes. In a house that appeared to have served as a restaurant, a cistern (水箱) for storing water between two garbage sites was packed with broken potteries and food waste, such as animal bones and grape seeds. No evidence has been found for a system for handling garbage.
The citizens in Pompeii also appear not to have shared our traditions on burial. As Romans, the citizens were always concerned with being remembered after death, so they built tombs in high?traffic areas. Since Roman law forbade tombs inside the city, they were built along the city walls. When the eruption buried the city, new tombs were still being built and the city appeared prosperous (繁荣的), according to Emmerson.

Do you read reviews before you see a movie? I use to do that, but I usually wished I didn't. I used to read so much about a movie in the advance that often I ended up not going to see it. The writers point out everything what is wrong with the film, and seldom mentions anything good about it. They also tell we the important things and even the ending of the movie. Should students make friends on line? Some people say yes. The Internet helps make many friends. Chatting on line, students can more freely express their feelings and opinions, and even get help with their foreign language studies.
Others, however, think students should not. They say making friends on line is a waste of time, which should be spent more meaningfully on study. Besides, some students get cheated on line.

M:I can see that.
W:Well, now it seems that some of the students aren't willing to give up their machines when the hour is over.
M:I suppose they feel that it doesn't matter very much to keep them a few minutes more.
W:Yes, but this makes it hard for those who are waiting to use the machines.
M:You are right. Let's prepare a notice right now. Then we can pass it out tomorrow to clear up the problem.
(Text 8)
W:Hello! I'm home! Tom?
M:Hi, Mum! I'm here.
W:Oh, my God! What's going on here?
M:I'll clear it up later. I've nearly finished. What do you think?
W:It's so lovely. I like the roof. What a beautiful red!
M:I haven't painted the front door yet. What color do you think it should be?
W:I think green would be nice ... or yellow ... or perhaps blue ... Oh, I don't know. Would you like me to make some curtains for it?
M:Oh, that would be great, Mum. Oh ... by the way ... I'm afraid I've got a bit of paint on the carpet over there. I'm terribly sorry.
W:Oh, you haven't, Tom!
M:It's all right. I think it will come out. If not, I'll just paint the rest of the carpet the same color.
(Text 9)
W:Yes, Sir. You called?
M:Yes, I wonder if you could bring me another bottle of beer.
W:Certainly. Would you like anything else?
M:Well, my grandson is supposed to meet me in London at the airport. Do you think he'll be able to find me?
W:I'm sure he will. You don't have to worry about that. Are you going to be visiting him?
M:Yes. I've never seen my grandson.
W:I think you'll have a wonderful time in London. It's beautiful, is this your first time abroad?
M:No, I saw quite a bit of Europe before, Rome, Berlin, Paris, places like that, but I've never been to London.
W:Oh, then you have flown before too.
M:No, that was during the Second World War and I went to Europe on a large ship carrying soldiers.
W:Things are quite different in Europe nowadays.
M:I'm sure they are. I'm really interested to get there.
W:Well, it's 4 o'clock now and we'll be there at 6:00. Will you be staying long?
M:I plan to stay five weeks. I was a teacher but I have stopped working. My wife has been dead and so I can go wherever I want.
W:I think you'll have a good time. I'll go and get a beer for you.
(Text 10)
M:Now, where am I staying in Barcelona?
W:I've booked you out in the Sky Palace, just at the airport terminal.
M:Sky Palace? Wasn't it possible to get me into Barcelona Hotel as usual?
W:Well, Barcelona Hotel would have involved much more traveling for you. The company you're visiting is located near the airport.
M:Oh, I see. Yes, fine. Have you got the hotel's phone number?
W:Oh, no, but I'll get it for you from the travel agency. And at the next stop, you've been booked into the Larval Hotel in Brussels.
M:The Larval? I've already stayed there twice and found it rather depressing. Is it possible to change the hotel?
W:Of course. I will do my best. Oh, the last stop, London.
M:OK. When everything is settled, I will ask my wife to meet me at the Heathrow Airport. Is there anything else?
W:If possible, I will ask them to send the tickets up before we close today. That's all in order now.

It was Halloween, which is a big deal when you're seven. I was sitting on the couch in my Sleeping Beauty costume, eagerly waiting for my dad to come home so he could take me trick?or?treating. My father had been away on a business trip. He was supposed to return earlier that day, but now it was midnight ... Finally I nodded_off.
The next morning I woke up and guessed that my mom had already known something I wouldn't find out for another couple of days. It was my dad who had a new identity: a plane crash survivor.
He told us about it later. It had been raining as he got on the plane home. The pilot was cleared for takeoff on one runway but turned a little too far and ended up taking off on another runway, one that was closed. Because of the rain, the pilot couldn't see the heavy construction equipment blocking the runway, and he crashed right into it. The left wing was torn off, the fuselage (机身) split in two, and fire shot through the middle of the plane. Nearly half of the passengers died, but amazingly, my dad was completely unhurt. After the crash, he couldn't breathe because of the smoke, so he ran toward the exit. When the plane wreckage (残骸) finally slid to a stop, my dad simply walked out.
My father told me when the plane crashed, his first thought was us. As sad as he felt at the thought of never seeing us again, he also felt a sense of relief that all his financial worries would be over. When he survived, he saw it as a second chance — but not the kind where he gave up everything. He valued his second life, so Dad sold his old business and started a new one. I'm so proud of my dad for this. I also think the quality time with my dad is precious. I'll enjoy it to the fullest.

Office workers should know that long periods of sitting at your desk may be a killer. Sitting still for long periods of time leads to the buildup of things in the blood that are harmful to health. While the bad influences are well recognized, it has been thought that they can change the situation by regular trips to the gym or swimming pool. However, that is not enough. In addition to regular exercise, office workers need to keep moving while at work.
There are six exercises that all office workers can do at their desks to stay healthy. The simple moves were designed by physiotherapists (理疗医师) who warn that sitting_is_the_new_smoking. They have been made public by the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP) after a survey announced last week which revealed (显示) four out of ten office employees walk for less than 30 minutes a day. The survey, from the British Heart Foundation, found a third of people are so tied to their desks that they even put off going to the toilet.
Now, CSP is urging people to try to be more active during the work day. Another survey revealed only one fifth of us leave our desks to go out for a while, and only three percent of us go to the gym.
Sammy Margo, a spokesman for the CSP, said, “Full?time workers spend most of their time at work. Finding ways to build in time to do at least 30 minutes of proper intensity physical activity, five times a week, can be a challenge.” And she added, “Using free facilities like outdoor gyms, or simply going for a leisure walk at lunchtime, can help people to be more active during the day. You could also consider getting off the subway a stop early or parking further away from work, walking meetings, standing desks and taking standing breaks.” Here, she reveals how to try and keep in shape while at your desk.

Starvation (饥荒) can be found everywhere and seems to be a never?ending battle. But it could be solved with the help from our country. If we took a look at any one of the third?world countries, we would realize how little effort it would take for us to save lives.
Although it exists all over the world, starvation is more common in areas like Africa where 30 million people are at risk of starvation or death from poor condition of nutrition. People should be aware of the amazing rate at which people die from starvation: every 3.6 seconds someone will die, a quarter of whom are children under the age of five.
This could change if Americans gave up a part of what we regard as a matter of course. Two of the items Americans abuse most, cigarettes and food, are the leading causes of death which can be prevented in our society. The money which could be used to save lives is spent slowly killing ourselves.
Obesity has risen rapidly in recent decades, resulting in over 300 million overweight adults globally. According to ABC News, “From 1960-1962, the average man weighed 166.3 pounds. By 1999-2002 the average had reached 191 pounds”. Not only did Americans waste money to put on this weight, they also had to pay for the results. Just a 10 percent decrease in body weight for obese people can reduce medical costs by D|S5,000 over their lifetime. Another luxury (奢侈品): cigarettes. Americans are, and always will be, willing to buy cigarettes at the shocking price of five dollars a pack. Over the course of a year, the costs of smoking?r
