The Greatest show on Earth
The Olympic Games are the greatest festival of sports in the world. Every four years, many countries send their best sportsmen to compete for the highest honour in sport. As many as 6,000 people take part in over 20 sports. For the winners, there are gold medals and glory. But there is honour, too, for all who compete, win or lose. That is in the spirit of the Olympics — to take part is what matters.
The Olympic Games always start in a bright colour and action. The teams of all the nations parade in the opening ceremony and march round the track. The custom is for the Greek team to march in first, for it was in Greece that the Olympics began. The team of the country where the Games are being held — the host country — marches in last.
The runner with the Olympic torch(火炬) then enters the stadium and lights the flame. A sportsman from the host country takes the Olympic oath(宣誓) on behalf of all the competitors. The judges and officials also take an oath. After the sportsmen march out of the stadium, the host country puts on a wonderful display.
The competitions begin the next day. There are usually more than twenty sports in the Games. The rule is that there must be at least fifteen. The main events are in track and field, but there are a few days before these sports start. Each day the competitors take part in different sports, like riding, shooting, swimming, and cross — country running. Points are gained for each event. Medals are awarded for the individual winners and for national teams.
More and more women are taking part in the Games. They first competed in 1900, in tennis and golf. Women’s swimming events were introduced in 1912. But it was not until 1928 that there were any track and field events for women. Now they compete in all but half a dozen of the sports. In horse riding, shooting, and boat racing, they may compete in the same events as men.
26. Why is there honour for the losers as well as for the winners?
A. Because losers and winners should be equally treated.
B. Because failure is the mother of success.
C. Because losers need encouragement.
D. Because what really matters is to take part in the Olympic Games.
27. Which of the following is a long-established practice in the opening ceremony?
A. Runners enter the stadium with torches.
B. Each team puts on a wonderful display.
C. The Greek team marches in first.
D. Sportsmen and sportswomen wear magnificent clothes.
28. Who takes the Olympic oath?
A. A judge from a foreign country. B. A sportsman from the host country.
C. An officer from the host country. D. A Greek sportsman.
29. When did women start taking part in the Olympic Games?
A. In 1912. B. In 1900.
C. In 1928. D. In 1924.

Unit2 The Olympic Games
A
For athletes and volunteers, next year’s Tokyo Olympics could become known as the Get-Up-Early Games.
Hoping to beat the summer heat in the Japanese capital, organizers said on Tuesday they will start the men’s 50-kilometer race walk final at 5:30 am, while the men’s and the women’s marathon finals will go at 6 am. The men’s and the women’s triathlon(三项全能运动) start at 7:30 am. The women’s softball(垒球) has games scheduled for 9 am, but no men’s baseball games will start before noon.
“A 9 am start is early. That’s my impression,” said Reika Utsugi, head coach of Japan’s women’s softball team. “But we will have one year for the preparation. Softball cannot decide the times.” Softball and baseball were dropped after the 2008 Olympics, and are appearing because of their popularity in Japan.
The 1964 Tokyo Olympics were held in the autumn and did not face heat problems. Modern Olympics which are held every four years can no longer be held during that time, avoiding Europe’s crowded soccer schedule, and year-round scheduling of baseball, basketball and hockey in the US. Koji Murofushi, sports director of the Tokyo Games, said organizers had consulted about scheduling with the International Olympic Committee(IOC), the governing bodies of the individual sports, athletes and medical experts. He said athletes would be able to adapt.
“When we look at the Olympic Games as a whole, of course we need to consider the global audience, adjust and control the overall schedule,” Murofushi said. “Athletes, when they know the schedule in advance, can make adjustments to their preparations.”
As previously announced, the swimming finals will begin at 10:30 am. The swim schedule has nothing to do with the heat and will follow the pattern of the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Organizers say the first gold medal event will be the women’s 10-meter air rifle, which will take place on July 25 — the day after the opening ceremony. Organizers have labeled Aug 8 — the day before the closing ceremony — as “Super Saturday”, with about 30 finals, the most of any single day. Finals will include the men’s basketball, the men’s soccer and the men’s baseball.
The most difficult event to schedule might be surfing. Organizers have blocked out eight days for the event, hoping surf’s up for at least four of them. It’s a four-day competition. “The schedule is subject to change depending on the wave conditions,” organizers said.
1. The organizers of the Tokyo Olympics will start some events earlier EXCEPT ________.
A. the women’s marathon finals B. the men’s triathlon
C. the women’s softball games D. the swimming finals
2. What can we infer from the passage?
A. The softball game is usually held in the late afternoon.
B. It’s impossible for athletes to deal with the new schedule.
C. The baseball game was cancelled at two Olympic Games.
D. The organizers changed the schedule without consideration.
3. The IOC changed the time of the Olympics Games to ________.
A. beat the summer heat B. meet the needs of athletes
C. avoid famous competitions D. give athletes time to prepare
4. As to the events and awards at the Tokyo Olympics, we can know that ________.
A. the men’s 10-meter air rifle will be the first event
B. Aug 8 will be the day with the most gold medals awarded
C. surfing which is easy to schedule will be a four-day competition
D. the men’s basketball will take place before “Super Saturday”

Roger Federer, who recently became the oldest man to hold the No. 1 ranking in men's tennis at the age 36, will bring a 12-match winning streak(连胜) to the BNP Paribas Open, which starts this week at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.
Federer, a five-time winner of the hard-court event and a 20-time Grand Slam singles champion, on Tuesday was seeded No. 1 in a field that has been given up by injuries to several excellent players. Among those missing are world No. 2 Rafael Nadal (hip injury), Stan Wawrinka (knee), who lost to Federer in the 2017 final, David Goffin (eye) and Andy Murray (hip surgery).
Federer, who has spent 305 weeks of his career at the top the Assn of Tennis Professional world rankings, must reach the semifinals(半决赛) at Indian Wells to keep his No. 1 status. If he exits sooner than that, Nadal would regain the top spot. Federer has a first-round bye(轮空) and a seemingly easy projected route to the quarterfinals, where he likely would face No. 5 seed Dominic Thiem of Austria.
Five-time Indian Wells champion Novak Djokovic, who had a small medical intervention(干预) on his troublesome right elbow earlier this year, was seeded 10th in the tournament(锦标赛). Djokovic has played only four matches this year because of his elbow problems and hasn't played a tournament since he lost to Hyeon Chung of South Korea in the round of 16 at the Australian Open in January.
Maria Sharapova of Russia will face Naomi Osaka of Japan on Wednesday with their match scheduled for not before 5:00 p.m.
On Thursday, Serena Williams will play Zarina Diyas of Kazakhstan and Victoria Azarenka of Belarus will play Heather Watson of the United Kingdom during the evening session (7 p.m. start).
5. What can we infer from paragraph 2?
A. Federer gave up the match on Tuesday due to the injury.
B. Many excellent players took part in the match including Rafael Nadal.
C. Federer was lucky enough seeded No. 1 on Tuesday.
D. Stan Wawrinka beat Federer in the 2017 final.
6. Why does Federer have a seemingly easy projected route to the quarterfinals?
A. Because he is seeded No.1.
B. Because he has a first-round bye.
C. Because many excellent players are missing.
D. Because he is well enough to beat any player.
7. Who is most likely to be the seed next to Federer among the players who can play in the BNP Paribas Open?
A. Rafael Nadal. B. Maria Sharapova.
C. Novak Djokovic. D. Dominic Thiem.
8. What is the best tittle of the text?
A. Roger Federer, seeded No.1
B. Roger Federer, to bring a 12-match winning streak
C. Roger Federer, beat everyone in the tournament
D. Roger Federer, the oldest No.1
Benefits of Sports
Doing sports is a physical, mental and social adventure. It’s a great way for children to take a break from academics and release extra energy. It also helps them lead fuller and happier lives as regular sports have proven to improve overall well-being.
The physical benefits of doing sports are probably the most obvious. Regardless of your fitness level when you start playing sports, you’ll notice an increase in your overall fitness once you’re involved. 9. Basketball players focus on strength training; football players work on speed while track athletes train through longer runs. The training process helps promote physical fitness and performances in competitions.
10. Playing sports contributes to mental health, helping to increase confidence and self-worth. A pat on the back, high-five from a teammate, or handshake after a match really boosts a child’s confidence. Words of praise and encouragement from the coach, parents and other players raise the self-worth. 11. So after a game, it’s a better idea to ask “Did you enjoy the game?” rather than “Did you win?”
Children who participate in sports might also benefit from the social aspect, feeling part of a group, building up accountability and leadership. 12. Teamwork involves both being dependable as a teammate and learning to rely on your teammates to achieve a positive outcome. Teamwork breeds accountability and challenges you to be responsible for your actions. Being part of a team gives you an opportunity to be a leader.
Discipline is another social advantage. Most organized sports require a strict training and practice schedule. As a student-athlete, you need to balance academics and athletics. 13.
There is no shortage of reasons to find a sport to get involved in. Are you ready to go? Pick one and get moving!
A. It’s not just your body that benefits from sports.
B. Therefore, playing sports is going to make you more fit.
C. But remember, a child’s self-worth should not be distinguished by victory or loss.
D. If you play group sports, you’ll be part of a team that takes direction from a coach.
E. Nearly every sport requires physical activity and the skills needed to be competitive.
F. Among these, learning how to fun_ction as part of a team is the most important advantage.
G. Only with strict discipline can you be successful both in the classroom and in the sports field.

A
根据第三段最后一句“Softball and baseball were dropped after the 2008 Olympics, and are appearing because of their popularity in Japan.”(垒球和棒球在2008年奥运会后被取消,但由于它们在日本的受欢迎程度而再次出现。)以及第四段第二句“Modern Olympics which are held every four years…”
根据第四段第二句“Modern Olympics which are held every four years can no longer be held during that time, avoiding Europe’s crowded soccer schedule, and year-round scheduling of baseball, basketball and hockey in the US.”
根据倒数第二段第二句“Organizers have labeled Aug 8 — the day before the closing ceremony — as “Super Saturday”, with about 30 finals, the most of any single day.”(主办方将8月8日——闭幕式前一天——定为“超级星期六”,有30场决赛,是单日决赛最多的。)
根据第二段中“Among those missing are world No. 2 Ratacl Nadal (hip injury), Stan Wawrinka (knee), who lost to Federer in the 2017 final, David Goffin (eye) and Andy Murray (hip surgery).”
根据文章第三段最后一句“Federer has a first-round bye(轮空) and a seemingly easy projected route to the quarterfinals, where he likely would face No. 5 seed Dominic Thiem of Austria.”
根据文章第二段最后一句中“Among those missing are world No. 2 Rafael Nadal (hip injury)”可知 Rafael Nadal 因伤退赛。根据文章第四段第一句 “Five-time Indian Wells champion Novak Djokovic, who had a small medical intervention(干预) on his troublesome right elbow earlier this year, was seeded 10th in the tournament.” 根据文章第三段最后一句中“where he likely would face No. 5 seed Dominic Thiem of Austria”可知 Dominic Thiem 排名第五,故他最有可能成为仅次于 Federer 的种子选手。故选D。
根据文章第一段“Roger Federer, who recently became the oldest man to hold the No. 1 ranking in men's tennis at the age 36, will bring a 12-match winning streak (连胜) to the BNP Paribas Open”(年龄最大的网球选手Roger Federer以36岁的年龄重返男子网球世界第一,这将为本周在Indian Wells tennis Garden开幕的BNP Paribas Open带来12连胜。)

根据后句“Playing sports contributes to mental health, helping to increase confidence and self-worth.” 故选A。
11. 根据前句“Words of praise and encouragement from the coach, parents and other players raise the self-worth.”(来自教练、家长和其他运动员的赞扬和鼓励提高了自我价值),和后句“So after a game, it’s a better idea to ask ‘Did you enjoy the game?’ rather than ‘Did you win?’ ”(所以在比赛结束后,最好问一问“你喜欢比赛吗?”而不是“你赢了吗?”)可知,这里句子为转折关系,但是请记住,一个孩子的自我价值不应该以胜利或失败来区分。故选C。
12. 根据前句“Children who participate in sports might also benefit from the social aspect, feeling part of a group, building up accountability and leadership.”(参加体育运动的孩子也可能从社交方面受益,感觉自己是群体的一部分,建立责任感和领导力),和后句“Teamwork involves both being dependable as a teammate and learning to rely on your teammates to achieve a positive outcome.”(团队合作包括做一个可靠的队友和学会依靠你的队友来取得一个积极的结果),可知,这里为承上启下句。
13. 根据前两句“Discipline is another social advantage. Most organized sports require a strict training and practice schedule. As a student-athlete, you need to balance academics and athletics.”
