四、阅读理解(每小题2.5分,共10分)
The American newspaper has been around for about three hundred years. In 1721, the printer James Franklin, Benjamin's older brother, started The New England Courant, and that was what we might recognize today as a real newspaper. He filled his paper with stories of adventure, articles on art, on famous people, and on all sorts of political subjects.
Three centuries after the appearance of Franklin's Courant, few believe that newspapers in their current printed form will remain alive for long. Newspaper companies are losing advertisers, readers and market value which would not have been imaginable just several years ago. The chief editor of the Times said recently, “At places where they gather, editors ask one another, ‘How are you’ as if they have just come out of the hospital or a lost law case.” An article about the newspaper appeared on the website of The Guardian, under the headline “NOT DEAD YET”.
Perhaps not, but the rise of the Internet, which has made the daily newspaper look slow and out of step with the world, has brought about a real sense of death. Some American newspapers have lost 42% of their market value in the past three years. The New York Times Company has seen its stock (股票) drop by 54% since the end of 2004, with much of the loss coming in the past year. A manager at Deutsche Bank suggested that stockholders sell off their Times stock. The Washington Post Company has prevented the trouble only by changing part of its business to education; its testing and test-preparation service now bring in at least half the company's income.
26.What can we learn about The New England Courant?
A.It is mainly about the stock market.
B.It carries articles by political leaders.
C.It remains a successful newspaper in America.
D.It marks the beginning of the American newspaper.
27.What can we learn from the Times editor's words?
A.Editors are fond of health stories.
B.Newspapers face great difficulties.
C.Editors are friendly with each other.
D.Newspapers often deal with law cases.
28.Which newspaper seems to have found a new way for its development?
A.The Washington Post.
B.The Guardian.
C.The New York Times.
D.The New England Courant.
29.How does the author seem to feel about the future of newspapers?
A.Cheerful. B.Hopeful.
C.Worried. D.Confused.

Things You Should Stop Doing to Be Successful
Are you a happy person? How often do you think of reasons why everyone around you is successful though they are not better than you in general? What do you do wrong? Here are some things you should stop doing to be successful.
? 30
Different people may interpret “success” in different ways: some of them measure it in money, other ones—in positive changes to people around them and the world in general. 31 Don’t worry about what other people think but care about what makes you happy.
?Do not believe anything without questioning it.
32 They are critical thinkers, and they understand that we all are ruled by our prejudices, so they will always question new information.
?Do not worry about all unpredictable things that may happen to you.
If you want to be successful, stop thinking about everything that MAY happen to you. 33 Be ready to improve and change your deeds and decisions when things suddenly don’t go according to your plan.
?Do not care about what other people think of you.
34 Your attempts to become “good” for everyone will turn into nothing but new worries, stresses, and problems. Successful people do not concentrate on the quantity of people to please, but worry about their quality and focus on developing friendships with people they really care about.
A.Do not wait for the “right time” to do anything.
B.Do not let others decide what “success” is for you.
C.Successful people do not just accept any new information to be true.
D.As far as we all know, it’s impossible to please all the people who surround us.
E.Try to feel comfortable with the reality and accept the fact that your future can’t be predicted.
F.If you want to be successful, do not let others force their interpretation of success on you.
G.Successful people never ignore or avoid problems, no matter how big and awful they seem.

必修五 Unit4 Making the news
英 语 (二)
(本卷满分100分)
一、阅读理解(每小题2分,共16分)
A
Every year, millions of Americans see their personal information leak into the wrong hands. Maybe there’s spyware on their computer, or a service they use suffered a security reach, leaving customers at the risk of exposure. Or perhaps their password is easy to guess.
Don’t fear: you can easily set up proper defenses. Here’s how.
?Clean Your Computer and Smartphone
Before you put new security measures into place, make sure your devices are as spotless as possible. This means installing a good antivirus program and taking the time to clear out any spy—or malware that may have already infected your system. These days, it’s also worth it to make sure your phone is safe from viruses. iPhones are less likely to be targeted by spyware, but Android users should download the Lookout app to scan their devices and ensure everything is as it should be.
?Secure Your WiFi
It’s fairly easy for potential criminals to gain access to your information if they’re able to share your connection—that’s why you want to be careful when using public WiFi. Even though you put security measures into place a couple of years ago, it’s a good idea to refresh your settings.
?Use passwords
What you’ve heard is true: passwords should use a variety of special characters, numerals, letters, and cases when possible.
?Check the shopping security
Take care when shopping online. Always check the security symbols when using an online site for shopping. If the lock icon encryption(加密) is not there, do not give out credit details. Also, check that the site is legal—never go to a site from a random e-mail and start shopping online.
Keep a separate credit card just for online shopping. This will make it easier to cancel if something bad does happen and your other credit card for “in real life” can still be used uninfluenced.
Don’t store information on any store’s website. It may be convenient but it’s also a possible loss to you if the site is hacked.
1.This passage is mainly about .

A.the applications of antivirus programs
B.the practice of using public WiFi

A.Adopting a unique password for every website.

I was browsing through different websites and almost all of them had headlines like, “Simon Cowell's TV show ‘Red or Black?’ loses more than a million viewers,” “Pay TV losing thousands of viewers!”, “Are TV shows doomed (注定) to lose viewers?” and so on.
The Web is taking over
There are a couple of reasons why TV has been losing viewers. The major contributor to this is the Internet. Everything you find on TV can be found on the Web, but not vice versa. Computers are more interactive (交互的) and are broadly used compared to the television. Videos of one's favorite songs and soaps can be downloaded and seen whenever one desires to. So, who really needs the TV now?
________
Ideally, if one is not employed, then he/she would spend more time watching TV. However, what if the financial state of that unemployed person makes him/her unable to afford to watch TV? That's the kind of financial state many people are in today. Those who had taken a housing loan and were hit by the economic crisis moved back to live with their families.
A lot of questions have been raised on how the decreasing TV viewership is going to hit the television industry. There has been a shift in television advertisements to other carriers. Restaurants, newspapers and websites are now receiving more advertisements. This will definitely decrease the money earned by the TV industry. But in the long run, because of the increasing competition with the Web, there will be more creativity. This will only improve the content seen by the viewers.
However, TV will always remain as a must-have thing in every home. A TV brings people together. A TV will always be preferred for enjoying live soccer matches, new TV series and your favorite movies. A computer may be your personal equipment but a TV serves to be a family attraction.
5.It can be inferred in the first paragraph that ________.
A.surfing the Internet is more popular than watching TV
B.watching TV is harmful to our health
C.there are many different creative programs on TV
D.TV is losing its popularity
6.What's the best title for the third paragraph?
A.There are more choices for entertainment.
B.Unemployment is affecting TV viewership.
C.More people are living together.
D.Busy life and less free time are influencing the situation.
7.We can learn from the last paragraph that ________.
A.TV is still the most popular medium
B.the TV industry needs more competition
C.TV won't be replaced by the Internet
D.the TV industry has more creativity than other media
8.In which part of a magazine would you most probably find the passage?
A.Education. B.Entertainment.
C.History. D.Figures.
