Module 2 A job worth doing
As soon as Christiana heard from her STEP?UP job coach that she'd be doing her summer internship at Minnetonka Moccasin, she got excited. She was always looking forward to learning more about this family?owned international business.
Christiana's first day started with introductory meetings with a number of staff members, including top leadership and the CEO! Christiana took it in stride and was eager to get started with her work. “I was surprised by how friendly and helpful everyone was,” she says. “My co?workers were very welcoming and kind, and they were very glad to answer my questions and teach me how to work well.”
Christiana worked in the customer service department. She had already mastered the complex database systems for orders and returns and learned to be patient and kind to customers. “This is the first time I've ever been behind the scenes of a major company and have seen how it functions,” she says. “The customer service part is fascinating because of the sheer amount of work they do to keep the company going. People are really impressed by what I did this summer!”
Christiana has a very broad range of interests from meteorology and psychology to theater and literature. The University of Minnesota is one of her top choices for college after she finishes her senior year at South High. In terms of her major, she's keeping her options open, and she is looking forward to the annual STEP?UP Golden Gopher Day to explore the University of Minnesota campus and meet with admissions staff.
As for Minnetonka Moccasin, they could not be happier. Christiana's supervisor is thrilled with the quality and amount of work that she has been accomplishing, saying that she is careful, pleasant and ready to learn every day. David Knox, Human Resources Generalist, says, “It is wonderful to work with Christiana. If she is in STEP?UP next year, we will want to have her back.”

The Human Traffic Signal①
At 3,500 metres, La Paz, in Bolivia, is the highest capital in the world. Life is hard at high altitude, and the mountains make communications difficult. Many roads are in bad condition② and accidents are frequent③. One road in particular④, which goes north from La Paz⑤, is considered⑥ the most dangerous road in the world. On one side the mountains rise steeply; on the other side⑦ there is a sheer⑧ drop, which in places is hundreds of metres deep. Although there is not a lot of traffic, on average⑨, one vehicle comes off the road⑩ every two weeks?. The drop is so great that? anyone inside the vehicle is lucky to survive?. In theory?, the road can only be used by traffic going uphill from 8 in the morning, and by traffic coming downhill from 3 in the afternoon. But in practice?, few drivers respect? the rules.

But thanks to? one man, the death toll? has fallen. Timoteo Apaza is a gentle 46?year?old man who lives in a village near the most dangerous part of the road?, known locally as? la curva del diablo (the Devil's Bend). Timoteo has an unusual job — he is a human traffic signal. Every morning he climbs up to the bend with a large circular board in his hand. The board is red on one side and green on the other. Timoteo stands on the bend and directs the traffic. When two vehicles approach from opposite directions they can't see each other, but they can see Timoteo. Timoteo is a volunteer. No one asked him to do the job, and no one pays him for it. Sometimes drivers give him a tip, so that he has just enough money to live on. But often they just pass by, taking the human traffic signal for granted.

So why does he do it? Before he volunteered to direct the traffic, Timoteo had had lots of jobs. He had been a miner and a soldier. Then one day while he was working as a lorry driver he had a close encounter with death. He was driving a lorry load of bananas when he came off the road at a bend and fell three hundred metres down the mountain. Somehow he survived. He was in hospital for months. Then, a few years later, he was called out in the night to help pull people out of a bus which had crashed at la curva del diablo. This last experience had a profound effect on Timoteo. He realised that he was lucky to be alive himself, and felt that it was his mission in life to help others. And so every morning, week in, week out, from dawn to dusk, Timoteo takes up his place on the bend and directs the traffic.

A
My working life started as a fitter. Then I became a photocopier technician and went on to run a few businesses of my own and that was a sad story.
My telecoms (电信) career began when I got the chance to fix two?way radios in vehicles. I just found a passion (热情) for all things in that field.
I was happy and settled in a great company, doing the “telco” work I loved, when a new job approached me. While I was sure that I could do it, I was happy with my employer at that time and wasn't that interested. That was until I spoke to a friend who worked for that company — Nokia. Rather than focusing on his work tasks, Gary talked about the lifestyle he had lived through his career with Nokia. How he had grown as a person, travelled the world with his family and got to drop his kids off at school. My eyes lit up. Where do I sign up?
Working here has lived up to even my great expectations. They are humans. They understand that when my personal priorities (首要事情) are met, I can give back more than what is asked of me. All I need is to know that someone_has_my_back.
My average day starts with walking my dog and then I prepare breakfast for my daughter and myself. By 7:30 am I drop my daughter off at school and this allows me to start working at about 8:30 am. My work can involve emergency fault call?outs for the radio access network infrastructure and mobile telephone exchange faults. Being a technician really gives me a wide variety of areas to focus on what makes it extremely exciting on a day?to?day basis! Things wind down by 4:30 pm when I head off to pick up my daughter from afterschool care and we spend some time together.
I just love doing what I'm doing. I challenge myself to learn and do different things on a daily basis and at the same time, I enjoy being an active parent.

If you haven't played games with an 80?year?old couple, you're missing out. Each week, my best friend and I hang out with senior citizens. Volunteering at a retirement village provides us with a great opportunity to meet new people and enrich the lives of the people we meet. We have learned so much from talking with senior citizens, and we are blessed to have this opportunity to reach out to those in our community. Nothing is more rewarding than seeing the faces of the elderly light up when we walk into the room.
Though my school only requires 10 community service hours, I have continued to volunteer throughout high school. While our 10?hour requirement is a good start, schools should require more volunteer hours. Volunteering offers students an irreplaceable way to help their communities and expand their knowledge of the world.
Some believe that forcing students to volunteer is defeating the purpose of volunteering, because it's not volunteering if you are required to do it. However, sometimes students need an extra push to reach out to their communities. It's because some students don't know the benefits of volunteering. After they start volunteering, they'll realize that volunteering can benefit them a lot and they will want to volunteer more.
Through volunteering, I've learned many valuable life skills. Besides teaching valuable life skills, volunteering may lead to a part?time job opportunity as well. If students prove their reliability (可靠性) and hard work ethic while volunteering, employers may take that into consideration and offer them a job. My best friend got her summer job after volunteering several summers at the Boy Scout camp.
There are various other benefits of volunteering. Besides making a difference in people's lives, students develop communication skills and acceptance of others. What's more, reaching out to others who are less fortunate teaches us to be grateful for what we have.
All in all, volunteering is an extremely rewarding activity which should be required.

C
There has been some discussion that all high school students may soon be required to get involved in their communities. So will students benefit from community service enough when school districts make it a requirement of graduation? Or is it just more stress added to the already busy schedules of most students?
Such a requirement actually has its advantages. Most teenagers have a lot of energy and are eager to take on a project to help the community or the world. They like to do group projects and they like to create ideas for new projects. Community service may help teenagers build leadership skills and learn that they have the ability to start a project that will help people greatly. When community service is required for graduation, it sparks creativity in students and propels (驱使) them to create projects that may have a deep impact on the local community. What's more, when students work with community leaders in public service they start to make connections that may help them later in their careers or life.
However, it also has its disadvantages. Some students have to work after school and at weekends to help support their family or to buy the clothes and supplies they need for school. Many high school students have very busy school, work, and sport schedules that barely leave time for sleep. Adding community service requirements would severely put stress on some high school students who work long hours simply to keep their family out of debt.
Also take into account students who may just want to volunteer for the sake of helping others and not to get something out of it. To some degree, requiring someone to volunteer takes away the whole purpose of volunteerism.
To conclude, I'd say community service not only benefits the community but also benefits the volunteers themselves. However, not everyone is able to do that. So high school students should just be encouraged to volunteer.

9.According to Paragraph 3, why are some students unable to do volunteer work?
A.Because they aren't supported by their parents.
B.Because their living conditions don't allow it.

D.Because they're the ones who need help.
根据第三段的“Some students have to work after school and weekends to help support their family”以及“work long hours simply to keep their family out of debt”可知,是因为一些学生的生活条件不允许。

Many independent Chinese women like to earn their own bread, even if their husbands are already bringing home the bacon. But a recent survey suggests that such women find more joy from relationships, rather than successful careers.
About 73 percent of the 7,000 women surveyed in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou said they would choose to work even if their husbands earned enough for the family. The survey also found that 77 percent define happiness as “enjoying a relationship”.
But striking a balance between career and family can bring challenges to the woman's career advancement.
“In my company, women usually have an equal or even a higher starting salary than men,” said Li Hua, general manager of Beijing Chuangjiashe Book Circulation Company. “However, as they begin to climb up the career ladder, women often meet problems along the way, while men can climb the ladder more easily.”
Both physical and emotional differences can prevent some women from taking tough positions, Li said. But family life is often the main difficulty for Chinese career women.
Despite these challenges, however, some experts believe it's reasonable for some women to want to be breadwinners.
“In this way, the roles of a family are decided by the parents' abilities rather than their gender (性别),” said Gu Donghui, a sociology professor at Fudan University.
Gu says women should have the freedom to decide if they want to stay at home or work to support the family. “Everyone has a different interpretation (解释) of what it means to find self?worth.”
Wang Haibin, an economic expert from Renmin University shares that view:“Traditionally, we tend to regard the family as the cell unit of society. Some members have always been expected to make sacrifices for it. But, it really doesn't matter who earns more. Economic independence and personal choice are essential for both sexes in the family.”

1.A.broke B.lacked
C.demanded D.misused
第3题空后的the lack of ...
2.A.as much B.rather than
C.more than D.less than
more than表示非常令人满意;rather than表示“而不是”。
3.A.problem B.doubt
C.fact D.reality
4.A.Besides B.Otherwise
C.Still D.Instead
5.A.favorite B.headache
C.topic D.pride
解析:选A 从第四段的“And I, like everyone else, truly loved his mother.”
6.A.ridiculous B.funny
C.polite D.tough

7.A.annoyed B.terrified
C.frustrated D.impressed
8.A.unreasonable B.unbelievable
C.unpredictable D.unbearable
9.A.suspected B.accused

16.A.silence B.satisfaction

17.A.checking up B.keeping watch
C.picking up D.dropping in
解析:选A 前文有提示,作者以为这位儿子又来查岗,keep watch on sb.“一直监视某人”;pick up on“了解;注意到”;drop in on“顺便拜访”,均不合语境。
18.A.decorating B.carrying
C.holding D.covering

A young man approached the foreman (工头) of a logging crew and asked for a job. “That depends,” replied the foreman. “Let's see you fell this tree.” The young man stepped forward and skillfully felled a great tree. Impressed, the foreman exclaimed, “You can start from Monday.”
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday rolled by — and Thursday afternoon the foreman approached the young man and said, “You_can_pick_up_your_paycheck_on_the_way_out_today.”
Startled, the young man replied, “I thought you paid on Friday.”
“Normally we do,” said the foreman. “But we're letting you go today because you've fallen behind. Our daily felling charts show that you've dropped from first place on Monday to last place today.”
“But I'm a hard worker,” the young man objected. “I arrive first, leave last and even have worked through my coffee breaks!”
The foreman, sensing the young man's integrity (耿直), thought for a minute and then asked, “Have you been sharpening your axe?”
The young man replied, “No sir, I've been working too hard to take time for that!”
Our lives are like that. We sometimes get so busy that we don't take time to “sharpen the axe”. In today's world, it seems that everyone is busier than ever but less happy than ever. Why is that? Could it be that we have forgotten how to stay sharp?
There's nothing wrong with activity and hard work. But we shouldn't get so busy that we neglect the truly important things in life. We all need time to relax, to think and meditate, to learn and grow. If we don't take time to “sharpen the axe”, we will become dull and lose our effectiveness.
1.The young man got the job by ________.
A.showing skills
B.giving promises
C.defeating others
D.answering questions
2.By saying “You can pick up your paycheck on the way out today” in Paragraph 2, the foreman means ________.
A.you'll be fired
B.you'll get a vacation
C.you can go home now
D.you can have a rest now
3.Why was the foreman unsatisfied with the young man?
A.Because he wasn't clever enough.
B.Because he didn't sharpen his tool.
C.Because he didn't obey his orders.
D.Because he wasn't good at felling trees.
4.What's the aim of the last paragraph?
A.To give a warning.
B.To introduce a theory.
C.To give a suggestion.
D.To make a comparison.

Dear Sir or Madam,
I'm Li Hua, a 17?year?old boy from No.1 Senior High School. Having learned that volunteers are wanted for the coming international tourism festival in our city, I'm writing to be one of them.
I have been learning English for eight years, during which I studied in London for two years, where I improved my oral English. Therefore, I believe I have no difficulty communicating with foreigners in English at all. Furthermore, I know about our city quite well, both about its past and present, which contributes to my spreading of our city culture as well as Chinese culture.
Were I accepted, I would work hard with other volunteers to make the festival successful.
I'm looking forward to your early reply.
Yours sincerely,

Module 2 A job worth doing
My neighbour, Mr Lee, used to be a barber and had a satisfying job. But three years ago, he suffered from a terrible accident at a crossroads near his home because a truck driver didn't respect the traffic rules. The crossroads was very busy, in particular at rush hours. Mr Lee had a close encounter with death and the accident had a profound effect on him. Thanks to his outgoing personality, he didn't lose heart. He felt it was his mission to make people obey the traffic rules.
After recovery, Mr Lee applied for a post as a traffic policeman but got refused, because he wasn't qualified for the job. But he was allowed to be a temporary rather than permanent worker. Mr Lee signed a contract, but now doesn't earn much. Mr Lee realises that it's essential for everyone to respect the traffic rules. Every day, Mr Lee takes up his place in the street directing the traffic. Some people who pass by take notice of him and feel very strange, but with time going by, they take it for granted that Mr Lee does this. Sometimes, he helps the elderly or kids cross the street and they are grateful to him. He also requires everyone to obey the traffic rules. In response to his work, people who often pass by the crossroads never break the rules. In practice, the toll here has dropped to zero.

Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

Bill Gates, an American inventor, computer programmer and businessman, is reportedly worth nearly $80 billion, making him one of the wealthiest people in the country today. He founded and was head of Microsoft for years.
Gates was born into a rich family in the state of Washington. His father was a lawyer; his mother was a banker. He is famous for being taken as the father of the modern computer. He studied at Harvard University but did not graduate because of his desire to develop new software.
As a 13?year?old student, Gates was introduced to computer programming. In 1975, Gates spoke to a company called Micro Instrumentation and Telemetry Systems (MITS). He convinced the owner of the company that he had written a program that would work well and make big money. The owner bought into Gates' inventions, and the two men reached an agreement to develop software for the company. Then the Microsoft Company was born.
Gates went on to develop the Windows operating system with then partner IBM. The two companies had differences though, and their partnership ended quickly. Gates worked as CEO until 2000. He remained active with the company for several years before leaving the company in 2008. In 2014, Bill Gates became the technical advisor of the firm.

A person's name is very important. Some names also have special meanings in popular American expressions.
An average Joe was walking down the street and was lost. An average Joe is a common person — either male or female. He did not know Jack about where he was going. By this, I mean he did not know anything about where to find things in the city.
So average Joe asked John Q. Public, also a common person — male or female, for directions to the nearest bank.
“Jeez Louise,” said John Q. Public. This is an expression of surprise. “Jeez Louise, don't you know that all banks are closed today? It is Saturday.”
“For Pete's sake, I do not believe you,” said average Joe. This is also an expression used to show a feeling like surprise or disappointment. He was being a doubting Thomas, someone who does not believe anything he is told.
At that moment, Joe Blow, also an expression for a common man, was walking down the street with a woman. Now this Joe Blow was not walking next to a plain Jane, meaning a woman who is neither ugly nor pretty. She is simply plain. No, the woman with Joe Blow was a real Sheila — a beautiful woman.
Average Joe asked the woman. “No way, Joe, many banks are open on Saturdays,” she answered. This is a way of saying “no”.
Average Joe did not know either of these two people from Adam. That is, he did not know them at all. But he followed their directions to the nearest bank.
When he arrived, he walked to the desk of the chief bank employee. Now this man was a true Jack of all trades. He knew how to do everything.
“I am here to withdraw some money so I can pay my taxes to Uncle Sam,” said average Joe. Uncle Sam represents the United States government. The banker produced some papers and told average Joe to sign his John Hancock at the bottom. A John Hancock is a person's signed name — a signature. Historically, John Hancock was one of the signers of the United States Declaration of Independence. Hancock had a beautiful signature and signed his name larger than all the others.
As average Joe left the bank he began to sing. But sadly, average Joe was not a good singer. He was a Johnny One Note. He could only sing one note.

We believe that there is more to education than preparation for a job. Children must be prepared for all aspects (方面) of their future work, personal relationships, creative activities, dealing with money matters, independence, and parenthood.
But it would be unrealistic (不现实的) to provide an education which took no consideration of the needs of employers.
What type of training does the business world regard as important?
Many young people applying for jobs were,in the employers' opinions, very weak in the basic skills of handwriting, grammar and spelling. “Though additional education at university level improved the students' general ability,” a report states, “in basic skills the standards remained stubbornly low.”
There are different opinions about whether standards have gone down in recent years. What is certain is that employers do not believe the standards are now high enough. Do technological changes make greater demands upon the students' abilities?
We should also remember that the job expectations of young people have increased. Girls who would have once become shop assistants or hairdressers now want to be secretaries. Boys who sought an apprenticeship (学徒工作) 20 years ago now desire to have an engineering degree. But it is still the_same_girls_and_boys with the same degree of ability. No wonder there are problems in reaching the “necessary standards” of the business world.
Many employers believe that it is important for teachers to have experience outside the world of college and school. They should work for a while at some other kinds of job “to see how the world of business is different from their own”. The teaching occupation and society in general need a greater understanding of manpower needs and therefore of “the desired” direction of the education system.

He runs from explosions, drives over waterfalls and jumps from tall buildings. That might sound like Superman, but stuntman (特技演员) Vince Deadrick Jr. is very much human.
As a stuntman in movies and television shows, Deadrick admits he's no stranger to getting hurt. He has suffered broken bones, bled, gotten knocked out and nearly fallen to his death, but he considers himself lucky to be alive after some of the stunts he has performed.
Deadrick has been a stunt coordinator (协调员) for the Nickelodeon channel for 12 years. He has worked with famous actors, directors and producers, and he has traveled all over the world. But that doesn't mean his work is easy.
It took him years of hard work to get where he is today. Deadrick's father, Vince Deadrick Sr., was also a stuntman, but his family connection didn't give Deadrick a free pass into the movie business. He learned from his dad how to set up cardboard boxes and fall pads for high falls, and he started training on his own once he decided to follow in his father's footsteps.
As a stunt coordinator, Deadrick takes danger seriously. When he hires a new stunt performer, he looks for a professional.
“You're only as good as the people you hire,” he says. A stuntman needs to know his own abilities and limitations so he won't shy away from doing his best but also won't be such a daredevil (铤而走险的人) that he could hurt himself or others.
When the actors and stuntmen are going to do something dangerous, they need to know they're trusting the right person. With over 40 years in the business, Deadrick is an expert at making stunts both realistic and safe.
Though he has a large amount of responsibility, Deadrick loves his job.
“I'm in a position where I have to make decisions on risk factors, keeping the actors and stuntmen safe while still making it look impressive. I love my business, and I love the excitement.”
32.It can be inferred from Paragraph 2 that Deadrick is ________.

33.What do we know about Deadrick's path to success?
A.He picked up his stunt skills from a stuntman.
B.He made it with hard work and great effort.
C.His dad offered him great encouragement.
D.His dad led him into the movie business.
34.When hiring stuntmen, Deadrick ________.
A.can't be too careful
B.prefers the fearless ones
C.likes those with no limitations
D.puts experience above all else

35.What does Deadrick think of his job?
A.Hard and boring. B.Easy and attractive.
C.Skilled but relaxing. D.Challenging but exciting.

Ever since college, it has been harder and harder to meet and keep friends. Here are five secrets to making lifelong friends.
Say “Yes”. When your friend calls, pick up. Get a message? Call back. If it's texting, respond in time if at all possible. __36__ It takes time and energy to build a deep and lasting connection. So put in the time and say “Yes” as much as you can. If you have made many plans and often find yourself saying “No” to invitations from friends, reassess (重新评估) your primary things and clear some time and space for your social connections.
Bring a gift. Did you know that some people's main love language is gifts? The cost of the gift doesn't matter much. __37__ If you're far away, sending a package is a super sweet way to reach your friends over the miles. If you're going to dinner, bring some flowers or a bottle of wine. When you're thoughtful and generous toward your friends, you'll be the one that they want to stick around.
Get curious. __38__ Ask questions about your friends' life, their dreams and desires, and their struggles. And instead of jumping in to fix their problems for them, try asking clear questions and listen to their process as they figure things out for themselves.
Share something weak. If you're too scared to tell your friend how you truly feel, you're not allowing your friendship to mature (成熟) to the next level. __39__ We can only develop a deep and lasting connection if we're able to share our true thoughts and feelings.
__40__ If you feel there's something wrong, talk about it. Most often, there's been some sort of miscommunication and by bringing it up, you can solve it quickly before too much upset builds.

Introduction & Reading — Pre-reading
A
My working life started as a fitter.
