Module 3 Adventure in literature and the cinema
I remember dreaming for years about living abroad. First it was Italy where I could discover my roots. Then it was Fiji because it seemed like the furthest place from Los Angeles.
After Fiji, my daily routine involved waking up early, working all day, and studying all night. As I'm writing this, I could picture myself a year and a half ago, sitting in my office, gazing out of the 20th floor, and wondering what it would be like to live in another country. Then one day I chose to stop dreaming. Instead, I chose to start planning.
I gave myself eight months to save enough money and plan where I would go. My goal was to live abroad for a year. I did two jobs, sometimes three, so I could save enough money for the school loans and credit card bills which I would still have to pay while I was gone. I had no social life, but I knew that I was working toward a life?changing experience.
I wanted to get over the fluency hump in Spanish, so I looked into countries in Latin America. In September of 2011 I quit my job and moved to Costa Rica. I volunteered to teach English at a local school in a poor neighborhood for two months. It was rewarding beyond belief.
Suddenly, panic struck. In December my money was going to run out and I would have to go home. As fate would have it, two weeks before I was due to leave, a friend told me about a job in a local company where she had just started working. She knew my background was in marketing and social media, and they just happened to have a Social Media Manager opening. I interviewed and got the job!
Then, as fate would have it again, the Director of Communications quit the day I started. After the initial shock, I decided that my journey didn't end there and applied for her position and then I became the new Director of Communications for a multimillion dollar company in Costa Rica!

“It looks as if⑨ it'll go under soon,” Jim said, after a couple of⑩ minutes.
“Let's go and take a look?,” I said.
“I don't want to board? a sinking ship,” said Jim, but when I suggested that we might find something useful on the boat, he agreed to go?. So we paddled? over and climbed on to the steamboat, keeping? as quiet as mice?. To our astonishment?, there was a light in one of the cabins. Then we heard someone shout?, “Oh please boys, don't kill me! I won't tell anybody!”
A man's angry voice answered, “You're lying?. You said that last time. We're going to kill you.”

When he heard these words, Jim panicked? and ran to the raft. But although I was frightened, I also felt very curious, so I put my head round the door. It was quite dark, but I could see a man lying on the floor, tied up with rope. There were two men standing over him. One was short, with a beard. The other was tall and had something in his hand that looked like a gun.
“I've had enough of you. I'm going to shoot you now,” this man said. He was obviously the one who had threatened the man on the floor. And it was a gun he had in his hand.
“No, don't do that,” said the short man. “Let's leave him here. The steamboat will sink in a couple of hours and he'll go down with it.”

threaten vt.
he had in his hand为定语从句,其前省略了关系词that/which,关系词作从句中had的宾语。
go down下沉

When he heard that, the frightened man on the floor started crying. “He sounds as if he's going to die of fright!” I thought. “I have to find a way to save him!”
I crawled along the deck, found Jim, and told him what I had heard. “We must find their boat and take it away, then they'll have to stay here,” I said.
Jim looked terrified. “I'm not staying here,” he said. But I persuaded him to help me, and we found the men's boat tied to the other side of the steamboat. We climbed quietly in and as we paddled away we heard the two men shouting. By then we were a safe distance away. But now I began to feel bad about what we had done. I didn't want all three men to die.

过去分词短语“tied to the other side of the steamboat”作后置定语,修饰boat,可换成定语从句“which/that was tied to ...”。
feel bad about对……

THE BRONTE FAMILY
Yorkshire in England was the setting for two great novels of the 19th century. These were Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre and Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights. The youngest sister, Anne, was also a gifted novelist, and her books have the same extraordinary quality as her sisters'.
Their father was Patrick Bronte, born in Ireland. He moved with his wife, Maria Bronte, and their six small children to Haworth in Yorkshire in 1820. Soon after, Mrs. Bronte and the two eldest children died, leaving the father to care for the remaining three girls and a boy.

Charlotte was born in 1816. Emily was born in 1818 and Anne in 1820. Their brother Branwell was born in 1817. Left to themselves, the children wrote and told stories and walked over the hills. They grew up largely self?educated. Branwell showed a great interest in drawing. The girls were determined to earn money for his art education. They took positions as teachers or taught children in their homes.
As children they had all written many stories. Charlotte, as a young girl, alone wrote 22 books, each with 60 to 100 pages of small handwriting. Therefore, they turned to writing for income. By 1847, Charlotte had written The Professor; Emily, Wuthering Heights; and Anne, Agnes Grey. After much difficulty Anne and Emily found a publisher, but there was no interest shown in Charlotte's book. (It was not published until 1859.) However, one publisher expressed an interest in seeing more of her work. Jane Eyre was already started, and she hurriedly finished it. It was accepted at once; thus each of the sisters had a book published in 1847.
Jane Eyre was immediately successful; the other two, however, did not do so well. People did not like Wuthering Heights. They said it was too wild, too animal?like. But gradually it came to be considered one of the finest novels in the English language. Emily lived only a short while after the publication of the book and Anne died in 1849.
Charlotte published Shirley in 1849, and Villette in 1853. In 1854 she married Arthur Bell Nicholls. But only a year later, she died of tuberculosis (肺结核) as her sisters had.

A.Jane Eyre was published in 1847
B.Charlotte Bronte wrote 22 books in all
C.the Bronte sisters received a good education
D.Patrick Bronte helped his daughters with their writings

3.Which of the following was published after the death of its writer?
A.Shirley. B.Villette.
C.Agnes Grey. D.The Professor.

A.Their novels interested few publishers.
B.None of them had more than two books published.

A 12?year?old girl from California became the winner of the 90th Scripps National Spelling Bee after spelling 35 words correctly.
Ananya Viany spent 45 minutes and 21 rounds going back and forth with 14?year?old Rohan Rajeev, of Edmond, Okla. But Rohan finally misspelled the word “marram”, and Ananya went on to win after coolly spelling two more words correctly. The winning word of this year was “marocain”. Ananya will take home more than D|S40,000 in cash and prizes.
Formed in 1925, the Spelling Bee is the nation's largest and longest?running educational contest (竞赛). It aims not only to encourage children to perfect the art of spelling, but also to help widen their knowledge of the English language. Participants cannot be older than fourteen, nor can they be past the eighth grade. To qualify for the Bee, a speller must win a regional (地区的) contest.
Ananya's win was the first single victory in three years at the Bee, with the contest previously ending in_a_tie since 2013. The bee added a test this year to break the situation. Ananya is the 13th Indian?American to win the bee in a row. She stood out as a newcomer last year. Her score on the written spelling and vocabulary test would have been high enough to make the top 50, but she missed a word “multivalent” on stage. As a sixth?grader, she could have come back for two more years, had she failed. Now, she'll return only to help present the trophy (奖杯) to next year's winner.
Among the other standout spellers this year was the youngest contestant ever, 6?year?old Edith Fuller, from Tulsa, Okla. But she was sent home in tears despite spelling all of her words correctly. The girl did not get a high enough score in a required written exam, forcing her to fail to qualify for the final round.

B.It encourages foreigners to learn English.
C.The first Spelling Bee was held in 2013.
D.A fourteen?year?old child in ninth grade can't participate in it.
根据第三段“Participants cannot be older than fourteen, nor can they be past the eighth grade.”
6.What does the underlined part “in a tie” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A.Being not attractive.
B.With two winners achieving the same scores.
C.Being criticized by the public.
D.With two players quitting the competition.
根据画线词前一句“Ananya's win was the first single victory in three years at the Bee”和后一句“The bee added a test this year to break the situation.”
7.From the passage, we know that Ananya ________.
A.is the first Indian?American to win the Bee
B.is the smartest speller in the contest
C.failed to make the top 50 last year
D.will come back to the contest for next two years
根据第四段“Her score on the written spelling and vocabulary test would have been high enough to make the top 50, but she missed ...”可知,她去年原本可以进50强,但因为拼错一个词而惜败,故选“failed to make the top 50 last year”。
8.Edith Fuller didn't enter the final round because ________.
A.she didn't perform well in the written exam
B.she is not Indian?American
C.her family didn't support her
D.she failed to spell all the words correctly

I have been a huge fan of Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean movies since the first one. While I was disappointed with the second and third movies, I was surprised at how much I enjoyed On Stranger Tides. The fourth movie is more focused on the characters and many parts reminded me of the first movie in the series, The Curse of the Black Pearl.

On Stranger Tides begins in London, where Jack has lost the hope of finding the Fountain of Youth. However, when he learns that the Spanish and British are racing each other to the fountain, his sense of adventure is renewed. He sets sail and the exciting race to the fountain follows. Because the plot is based on a race, it stays focused and kept me wondering what was going to happen next. I think this was a great change from the plots of Dead Man's Chest and At World's End. In this movie the characters are heading for a clear goal and I could focus more on them than what was happening in the plot.
While I missed some of the old characters, like Will and Elizabeth, I was also glad that they weren't brought back for this movie because I think it would have made the plot too complicated (复杂的). The only character I wish I had seen more is Jack Sparrow's father, played by Keith Richards.I expected more of Sparrow's past to be shown in this movie because there had been hints (暗示) of his dark past in the other movies.
My favorite part is the ending because there is a direct tie to the first movie when someone ends up getting left helpless on an island. I love this part because it reminds me of why I fell in love with Pirates of the Caribbean in the first place.
9.From Paragraph 1 we know that the writer________.
A.enjoyed watching On Stranger Tides
B.loved every movie of Pirates of the Caribbean
C.thought On Stranger Tides was the best of the four movies
D.thought The Curse of the Black Pearl was very disappointing
根据第一段的“I was surprised at how much I enjoyed On Stranger Tides”可知作者很喜欢看《惊涛怪浪》这部电影。
10.In On Stranger Tides, what does Jack mainly want to do?
A.To find his father.
B.To find Will and Elizabeth.
C.To find the Fountain of Youth.
D.To help the Spanish find a fountain.
根据第二段的“where Jack has lost the hope of finding the Fountain of Youth. However ... the exciting race to the fountain follows.”
11.Dead Man's Chest and At World's End are________.
A.the first and third movies of Pirates of the Caribbean
B.the first and fourth movies of Pirates of the Caribbean
C.the second and third movies of Pirates of the Caribbean
D.the second and fourth movies of Pirates of the Caribbean
根据第一段的“the first movie in the series, The Curse of the Black Pearl”可知《黑珍珠号的诅咒》是这个系列的第一部,又根据“While I was disappointed with the second and third movies, I was surprised at how much I enjoyed On Stranger Tides”可知《惊涛怪浪》是第四部,那么剩下的两部就是第二部和第三部。
12.Why does the writer like the ending of On Stranger Tides best?
A.Because it is the most exciting part of the movie.
B.Because it brought him hope when he was once hopeless.
C.Because it reminded him of watching the first movie with his loved one.
D.Because it reminded him of why he started loving Pirates of the Caribbean.
根据最后一段的“I love this part because it reminds me of why I fell in love with Pirates of the Caribbean in the first place.”

The Life of Mark Twain
Often the lives of writers resemble① the lives of the characters they② create③. Mark Twain, who wrote The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer④, was no exception⑤. To start with⑥, the author's name, Mark Twain, is itself an invention, or “pen name”. Twain's real name was Samuel Clemens. “Mark Twain”, which means “watermark two”⑦, was a call used by sailors on the Mississippi to warn shipmates that they were coming into shallow⑧ water.

Like Huck, Mark Twain led an adventurous life⑨. He left school early, and as an adolescent⑩, determined? to make his fortune? in South America, set off? from his home in Hannibal, Missouri, for New Orleans. He wanted to take a boat to
the Amazon, where he thought he could get rich quickly?. He arrived in New Orleans without a penny? in his pocket? only to find? that there were no boats for South America. Forced? to change his plans, he worked for several years as a pilot on a steamboat, taking passengers up and down? the Mississippi?, the great river which flows from the north of the US near the Canadian border, down to the Gulf of Mexico.
Later he became a journalist and began writing stories about life on the river. Twain's vivid and often amusing descriptions of life on the river quickly became popular, and established the reputation he still enjoys today as one of America's greatest writers.

Audrey Hepburn won an Academy Award as Best Actress for her first major American movie, Roman Holiday, which was released in 1953. But she is remembered as much for her aid work as for her acting.

Born in Belgium in 1929, Audrey's father was British and her mother was Dutch. Audrey was sent to live at a British school for part of her childhood. During World War Ⅱ, she lived and studied in the Netherlands. Her mother thought it would be safe from German attacks. Audrey studied dance as a teenager and during college. But when she returned to London after the war she realized she wasn't going to be a ballerina So she began taking acting parts in stage shows. Later she began to get small parts in movies.
But it was Audrey Hepburn's move to America in 1950s that brought her true fame. In 1951 she played the character “Gigi” in the Broadway play of the same name and received great critical praise. Two years later, Roman Holiday made her a star at the age of 24.
Audrey made more than 25 movies. Among her roles, the most popular one was Holly Golightly in Breakfast at Tiffany's in 1961. Three years later she played Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady.
She was married two times and had one child with each husband. In 1989, the UN Children's Fund named Audrey a goodwill ambassador. She travelled all over the world in support of UNICEF (联合国儿童基金会) projects. The UN agency said she was a tireless worker. She often gave 15 interviews a day to gain money and support for UNICEF projects.
Audrey Hepburn often said her loyalty to UNICEF was the result of her experiences as a child during World War Ⅱ. She said she knew what it was like to be starving and to be saved by international aid. She was a goodwill ambassador until her death in 1993 from colon cancer.

Life doesn't always turn out the way we'd like. When situations take an unfriendly turn, we become upset, frustrated, and angry. When others don't agree with us, live their lives the way we think they should not, or act in a manner we find disturbing, anger is a typical reaction. It seems that we feel anger gives us the momentary feeling of power in a situation where we feel we have lost authority (权威). However, in fact, with the exception of a few cases, an angry reaction rarely improves the situation. It only makes the situation worse. Thoughtful consideration of what feelings and replies are most advantageous actually restores our real power. So consider the following alternatives (替代) to anger.
One is compassion, which consists of both understanding and empathy. If we view an individual whose behavior we find unacceptable, we should think each person has a right to live life according to their beliefs, dreams, needs and so on. Even if someone is acting improperly, you should understand them rather than get bent_out_of_shape. If they are struggling, lost, or in pain, you should choose to feel empathy for their suffering, hoping that they soon pass through their current challenge to a more joyful place. If you do so, your anger will disappear.

Humor is another powerful tool for stopping anger because it can help you stay calm when things get bad. Sometimes we take life far too seriously. That is bad for us and anger is easy to happen. We need to use humor to turn any serious situation into a light one. Humor acts as a protective barrier to emotional pain.
Therefore, when others behave badly, find it in your heart to forgive them for their unwise behavior rather than complain them. When life hands you the exact opposite of what you requested, take no notice of it instead of getting angry. After all, the bad situation is only temporary. So choose these alternative reactions to soften our heart and prevent anger from happening so that we can enjoy our life to the fullest.
1.What can we infer from Paragraph 1?
A.Anger can make people powerful.
B.People are all easy to get annoyed.
C.Anger always makes situations worse.
D.Anger can do some good in a few cases.
根据第一段中的“with the exception of a few cases, an angry reaction rarely improves the situation”可推出,愤怒在某些情况下也可以带来好处。
2.What does the underlined part in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Bored. B.Angry.
C.Excited. D.Worried.
3.What should we do if life lets us down according to the last paragraph?
A.We should complain about it.
B.We should ignore it.
C.We should show mercy to it.
D.We should get mad.
根据最后一段第二句“When life hands you the exact opposite of what you requested, take no notice of it instead of getting angry.”
4.What is the best title for this passage?

Module 3 Adventure in literature and the cinema
Mark Twain, one of America's greatest writers, established his reputation for his great works. His novel, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, set in the USA in the 19th century, is in fact his auto?biography rather than a fiction he created. That is, his own life resembled the lives of the characters he made up. As an adolescent, Mark Twain was determined to make his fortune. He set off from his hometown for South America. Unfortunately, he was forced to stay on a steamboat to work as a pilot for several years. Twain's vivid and amusing accounts of life on the river still make people feel in the mood to read the novel now. The novel has won countless good reviews in the world. Here is a part of this novel.
The main character, Huck, and his companion, Jim, ran away. They sailed down the Mississippi River on a raft. Because the rain poured down, they were staying inside the shelter when Huck saw a steamboat in the middle of the river. He also heard a man's angry answer “You're lying”. Jim felt very frightened and panicked, while Huck felt a little curious and crawled to the steamboat. He saw a man with beard beating another man, tied up with rope. Huck decided to save the injured. He played a trick on and disturbed that man with beard. The two boys and the injured man paddled away to a safe place.

Introduction & Reading — Pre-reading
A
THE BRONTE FAMILY

A.the first and third movies of Pirates of the Caribbean
B.the first and fourth movies of Pirates of the Caribbean
