Module 5 The great sports person
For many in their 40s, going jogging around the park is enough to cause a hot sweat. And then there’s Li Ning, who at the age of 44, was able to fly through the air and then “run” a lap around the Birds Nest’s vertical (垂直的) wall at least, according to the China Daily.
After his retirement from gymnastics, Mr Li set his sights on gold of a different kind. In May 1990 he founded the Li?Ning sportswear company. Throughout his life, he has enjoyed new challenges. Not satisfied with sitting back and watching the gold coins roll in, he set about a new learning program for himself that would take his business to an entirely different level. He studied law at Peking University. But that was merely one phase of his preparations. He said in 1998: “After finishing my studies at Peking University, I’ll continue to do the MBA programme. I am preparing myself for competition in the global market.” After graduating with an MBA, the prince of gymnastics then made ambitious growth plans that would make him a corporate king.
According to a financial report, Mr Li is chairman in a company that has over five thousand stores in China, which has a revenue (收入) of more than 4.35 billion yuan each year — up 36.7 per cent year?on?year. Revenue from footwear alone was 1.86 billion. It means that in a region of seven and a half million people, if a pair of shoes was sold for 250 yuan, everyone bought a pair of “Li Nings” last year.
However, Li Ning was facing an intractable (很难处理的) situation. Plans to build on top of its success in China with expansion into overseas markets were below expectations. He was also facing increased competition in its home market from other Chinese brands like Anta. Li Ning is acutely aware of this, and has been working hard to improve his brand’s image.

Li Ning’s sports clothes came onto the market at just the right time . The number of young people with money to spend was on the increase — and sport had never been so popular. Li Ning’s designs were attractive, and they had a major advantage over their better?known rivals — they were cheaper. A pair of Nike trainers, for example, could cost up to five times as much as a similar Li Ning product. Success for Li Ning was guaranteed, and it came quickly.
In just a few years, Li Ning won more than fifty per cent of the national market. Today a Li Ning product is purchased every ten seconds. But the clothes are not only worn on the athletics track or the football pitch. If you go into a school or university anywhere, the chances are you will see students in Li Ning tracksuits with the familiar logo. The company has also grown internationally. The Spanish and French gymnastics teams wear Li Ning clothes, while Italian designers are employed by the company to create new styles. Whenever Chinese athletes step out onto the track during the 2008 Olympics, they will be wearing Li Ning tracksuits.

But Li Ning’s goal when he retired was not to make money. His dream was to open a school for gymnasts. He was able to do this in 1991. Since then, he has continued to help young people to achieve their sporting ambitions. Like Pele and Muhammad Ali before him, who have worked with the United Nations for children’s rights and peace, Li Ning has discovered that the work of a great sportsman does not finish when he retires from the sport. It starts. And if you are a great sportsperson, anything is possible, as Li Ning’s advertising slogan says.

“Football is a very short?term career. Football really prepares you for almost nothing. The only thing I got out of football was the ability to work hard,” says Gales Sayers. So what do you do after your glory days on the field are over? Here’s what one of the top players, Gales Sayers, did after he_put_down_the_pigskin.
Gales Sayers: 40, Chicago Bears, Running Back.
Gales Sayers became famous in 1965. After recovering from a serious knee injury in 1968, Sayers returned to the Bears in 1969 and was awarded the George Halas Award as “the most courageous player in professional football”. At the award ceremony, he owed his prize to his friend and teammate Brian Piccolo who was dying of cancer.
Sayers couldn’t get away from the injuries, though, and another blow to his knee put an end to his football career in 1971. His personal life was unfortunate as well, as he and his wife, Linda, split up that year. Shortly after that, Sayers started a new life and career as an assistant athletic director in the University of Kansas. By 1976 he was moving up the ladder at Southern Illinois University, becoming the first African?American athletic director at a major university.
Sayers started a computer supplies company in 1984 with his second wife, Ardie, whom he married in 1973. The couple was looking for a field with a future, and computers seemed to have it all. Seventeen years later, the company that bears his name is a national provider of technology solutions, with 10 locations and over 350 employees across the country. Just like in the old days the honors started rolling in. Sayers was listed into the Chicago Area Entrepreneurship (企业家) Hall of Fame in 1999.

B.Only once as a businessman.
C.Twice in all.
D.We are not quite sure.

I am a long distance runner. When I was thirty?one, I was in a serious car accident. The doctor told me that they would try to get me to walk “normally” but I would never run again — terrible news for someone who views running as the oxygen she breathes. The doctors were right. For the next nine and a half years, I was unable to run more than twenty?five feet.
In 2006, I began self?training to take part in a 60?mile walk.Three months into preparing, I realized that walking 4-5 hours a day was too long.If only I could jog part of it — that would cost me less time.I started jogging without my knees aching. Slowly, I increased the distance. The doctors were proved wrong — it only took nine and a half years to do so.
While practicing, I suffered a loss — a dear friend suddenly died. His work had been to help women to accept themselves and reach their fullest potential. He believed that people should let nothing hold them back from achieving their goals.Soon after his death, a crazy thought entered my mind: what if I could run the LA Marathon? I knew that if I didn’t train to my fullest, the doctors would win.So I trained seven days a week. And I succeeded in crossing the finish lines of many marathons all over the United States to the astonishment of my doctors. They never believed I would achieve that.
The aches and pains I experience while training and racing are nothing compared to the suffering people whom I respect must accept.

Terry Evanshen was one of Canadian football’s greatest receivers. He played every down (进攻) as if it was his last. Though he had made great achievements, Terry’s memories of his playing days have been completely lost.
It was in the summer of 1988 after he retired from playing that his career in sales was taking off. One day in July, Terry, on his way home from work, had a terrible car accident. He was knocked unconscious, and within minutes he was rushed to the nearby hospital.
Three weeks later, he woke up. However, it became obvious that Terry’s injuries were far more serious than whatever damage had been done to his body. A lifetime of memories had been completely wiped clean. He had been all but reduced to the level of a baby; everything from his ability to talk and walk to his understanding of what it meant to be a husband and a father was all gone.
At age 44, Terry Evanshen would be starting all over again. Luckily he had the support of his family, helped by small victories and a renewed bond between him and his three daughters like when they taught him how to play football again.
In 1992, his recovery really began to pick up steam. It has taken years to rebuild his shattered (破碎的) life, but today, more than 20 years since his playing days, Terry is a popular public speaker. He tells his inspiring story of perseverance (坚持不懈) and courage. “Never forget, we’re all in this game of life together. We will get to the finish line, one day at a time, one moment at a time, but celebrate the journey. Seize today, because yesterday is gone and is never coming back.” As the subject of the most watched Canadian movie of 2005, The Man Who Lost Himself, Evanshen says his family has been his most important treasure. He refuses to be a victim saying he is a survivor.

11.What’s the best title for the text?
A.A Great Football Player
B.What’s Persevering Person Like?
C.The Man Who Lost Himself
D.Terry Evanshen’s Life

We all can suffer from stress in this day and age. Stress can affect our life and health. How can we better deal with it? Here are a few suggestions and methods.
__1__ Dealing with stress can’t be done all at once. There will be several things that have led to your stress, so it is important to clear one or two things from your life at a time. Get moving. __2__ It could be walking, hiking or a bike ride. Boxing or yoga might be useful for relieving (缓解) stress, too. You just need to find out what is fun and what works for you. So don’t choose something that seems a real burden to you.
Do something calming. When you feel stressed, it can be hard to sit down quietly, as you might be thinking of so many other things that you need to do. But doing something calming is really important. It might be reading a book, having a bath or doing some coloring. Try to do something like this every day. __3__
Simplify (简化) your life. If you find it hard to take time to do everything that you need to, then you need to simplify your life. __4__ Clear your schedule of unimportant things and focus on the things that you need to do, as well as the things that will make you happy.
Do some cleaning. Going through things in your home that are just taking up space and that you no longer use is so important. __5__ When your home isn’t a mess, it will help your mind to feel less messed up, too.

The marathon has been an Olympic event since the modern games started in 1896⑩. At first? the distance was 40 kilometres — the distance between Marathon and Athens. In 1908, however, at the London Olympics, it was changed. The King of England wanted the runners to leave from his castle? in Windsor and arrive in a new stadium in central London. The distance was 26 miles — about 42 kilometres. In fact, the 1908 marathon ended dramatically?. When the leader, an Italian, entered the stadium he turned the wrong way? and fell onto the ground. Officials picked him up? and helped him to the finishing line?, just as the second runner, an American, entered the stadium. The Americans protested? and in the end? the American runner was declared? the winner. Since then?, there have been many more exciting marathons.

In fact, you don’t have to wait for the Olympic Games to run or watch a marathon, as there are marathons in over sixty countries and hundreds of cities around the world today. One of the most famous marathons is in New York, and is watched by two million people around the streets and across the bridges of the city’s five boroughs, and past New York’s famous landmarks. But perhaps one of the most beautiful and extraordinary marathons ever is the Great Wall Marathon, which most competitors find is the toughest course to run.
The marathon is the final Olympic event because it is thought to be the hardest. But experts believe that most people — even people who are not particularly good at sport — can run a marathon, if they train for it.

Sir Roger Bannister was the first man to run a sub?four?minute mile — one of the most athletic milestones (里程碑).
Born in 1929, he studied medicine at Oxford University, and represented Great Britain in the 1952 Olympics in Helsinki. At the Olympics, Roger Bannister finished 4th in the 1,500 meters. However, inspired by the intensive training and three gold medals of Emil Zatopek, Bannister decided to make an effort to beat the magical four?minute barrier for the mile.
At that time, Bannister was working as a doctor and only had limited time for training. He focused on short intervals, anaerobic training and the use of block training (building up for certain weeks).
In 1954, Roger Bannister saw an opportunity at an athletic meeting between Oxford University and Amateur Athletics Association on 6 May. The day was cold, wet and windy and the record attempt was nearly called off. However, at the last moment, the wind died down and Bannister decided to take his chance. He was led out by two pacemakers who led him for the first three laps. Then Bannister made his last effort for the line. Clearly on the edge of tiredness, Bannister almost fainted (晕倒) over the line, before the time keeper read out his time.
The seconds were not heard as the 3,000 audiences cheered the historic moment. Six weeks later in Finland, Australian John Landy became the second person to beat the four?minute mile setting a new world record of 3 minutes 57 seconds. However, who remembers the second person to run a sub?four?minute mile? Bannister held the one?mile record for the shortest time.
After breaking the record, Bannister concentrated on his medical career and remained modest about his groundbreaking achievement. He also served as Master (院长) of Pembroke College, Oxford, before retiring in 1993. He later said there was an element of luck in being the first person to break the four?minute mile. It remains one of the great milestones of athletic history.

I will not go on about the causes of sunburn because you probably already know. If you get sunburnt, you may be feeling a bit embarrassed about it. Once you have sunburn, the damage is done. So try the following ways to ease the discomfort.
Cool it down by taking a bath or shower. Keep the water and room warm, especially for children, as they may easily feel cold. Some people like to add 1/2 cup of baking soda to the bath water. This may help reduce your pain. You could also place a wet and cool cloth on the burnt area for about 15 minutes. Do that several times a day.
Apply moisturizer (润肤膏). You can choose some cream that makes your skin not that dry. Apply aloe, either the plant form or gel. Aloe contains active things that help reduce pain. Over the next few days, the skin may peel (脱皮). This is the body’s way of eliminating the dead skin, so keep using such cream to help make your skin comfortable.
Leave any blisters (水泡) complete. This helps speed healing and avoid infection as burst blisters can easily get infected. You can cover blisters to protect them if needed and definitely do not wear clothing that will cause friction (摩擦) as this can “pop” the blisters. Damaging the blisters can, and probably will cause more pain with rubbing on soft skin and also cause infection.
Give pain relief if needed. The medicine aspirin is not recommended for children.
At this point, the person may not be comfortable, so do not make it worse by applying something that can prevent healing and increase or lock in the heat under the skin, therefore causing more burn damage.
See a doctor if:
·it covers a large part of the body or is severe in nature.
·there is a high fever, chills, rash, nausea, and severe pain.
·feeling faint or dizzy, rapid pulse or quick breathing.
·extreme thirst, little or no urine output or sunken eyes.

Hi, Tom,
How are you doing? I’m writing to share my experience in our school sports meet with you.
The sports meet was held in the sports ground from September 10 to 13. I took part in the 1,500?meter race and competed with other 19 competitors. At the beginning, I was of the top five; but after two rounds, I found it hard to catch up with them, and soon I became the last one. Seeing that, I nearly gave up. However, the continuous “come on” from the audience encouraged me to go on. Finally, I ended up rushing the finishing line.
Through this experience, I have understood that making it to the end is as important as being the winner in a way.
Best wishes!
Yours truly,
Li Hua

In the end, we drove to a service station but waited there until the road was clear. In the car park there, Gina nearly knocked over as a car drove out far too quick from behind a lorry.
Hi, Tom,
How are you doing?

Introduction & Reading — Pre-reading
A
“Football is a very short?term career.
