A Beautiful Reminder
Clara Daly was seated on an Alaska Airlines flight from Boston to Los Angeles with her mother when a flight at-tendant asked an urgent(紧急的)question over the loudspeaker:“Does anyone on board know American Sign Language(ASL)?”
Clara, 15 at the time, offered to help. The flight attendant came by and explained the situation. “We have a pas-senger on the plane who's blind and deaf. He is flying home after visiting his sister. He is unable to make any kind of communication with the flight attendants,”she said. The passenger seemed to want something, but he was traveling alone and the flight attendants couldn't understand what he needed.
Clara had been studying American Sign Language for the past year and she knew she'd be able to finger spell into the man's palm(掌心). So she stood up, walked toward the front of the plane, and rested on her knees a-longside 64-year-old Tim Cook. Gently taking his hand, letter by letter, she unlocked his wishes. She signed, “How are you?Are you OK?” Cook asked for some water. When it arrived, Clara returned to her seat. She came by again a bit later because he wanted to know the time. On her third visit, she stopped and stayed awhile. She soon realized Cook didn't need anything. He was lonely and wanted to talk.
So for the next hour, that's what they did. She talked about her family and her plans of becoming a politician in the future. Cook told Clara how he had gradually become blind over time and shared stories of his days as a travelling salesman. Even though he couldn't see her, she looked attentively at his face with such kindness.
People on board thought it was cool. A passenger named Lynette Scribner took a photo and wrote about Clara's act of kindness on the Internet, calling it “a beautiful reminder in this time of too much awfulness that there are still good people who are willing to look out for each other.”24.The flight attendant wanted a person who ????.

Most people think if they are tired when they first wake up, they need more sleep. However, they are mistaken when they conclude that any sleep is good sleep. Sleeping is a process with different cycles. To feel fully rested, the body must go through all the sleep cycles. Falling back asleep after hitting the snooze button restarts the process, but when the alarm rings again several minutes later, the process is interrupted. The body has not gone through all the cycles, and this can cause the body to feel sleepy for the rest of the day. This sleepi-ness can affect memory, the ability to make choices, and performance at work or school.
Sleepiness may also happen if the body's biological rhythm(节律) is interrupted. People normally fall asleep at night and wake up in the morning because their rhythms are operating naturally. The rhythms are affected by re-peated use of the snooze button, which can cause feelings of sleepiness during the day and an inability to fall
asleep at night.Rather than depending on the snooze button, people need to consider developing different routines. The easiest choice is to put the alarm on the other side of the room. Having to get out of bed to turn it off decreases the pos-sibility of hitting the snooze button. Another choice, if your routine allows it, is to just reset the alarm. Setting your alarm for 30 minutes later will make the whole sleep process longer instead of always restarting it. Howev-er, it must be stressed that getting up 30 minutes later in the morning is not an excuse to stay up 30 minutes later the night before.
Though a few extra minutes of sleep may seem to promise a better start to the day, hitting that snooze button creates an unhealthy sleep pattern.
27.The second paragraph is mainly about ????.
A.what unhealthy sleep patterns most people have
B.what people should do to feel fully rested in the daytime
C.why people feel like going back to sleep after first waking upD.why a few minutes of sleep after first waking up causes bad effects
28.What can we learn from the passage?
A.Hitting the snooze button helps people fall asleep at night.
B.People wake up because their biological rhythms are interrupted.
C.Getting up several minutes later helps people feel more energetic.
D.Putting the alarm a bit far from the bed helps form healthy sleep habits.
29.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A.Don't Wake Up Late!
B.Don't Use Alarm Clocks!
C.Don't Touch That Button!
D.Don't Change Sleep Patterns!
第二段第一句“Though hitting the snooze button allows people a few more minutes of sleep, it causes unhealthy sleep patterns.”
根据第四段的第二句“The easiest choice is to put the alarm on the other side of the room.”和第三句“Having to get out of bed to turn it off decreases the possibility of hitting the snooze but-ton.”
I recently spent an evening trying to choose a cup on Amazon. Nearly an hour later, after having read count-less reviews about dozens of kinds, I felt tired and simply gave up. The next day, I happily bought the only kind
the local store offered.
Too many choices make us tired and unhappy and lead us to sometimes avoid making a decision. Researcher Barry Schwartz calls this “choice overload”. “As the number of options(可选择的事物) increases, the costs in time and effort of collecting the information needed to make a good choice also increase,”writes Schwartz. “The level of certainty people have about their choice decreases. And the possibility that they will regret their choice increases.”
Understanding how and why we make decisions can perhaps help us make better choices. We make poorer deci-sions when we are tired. The mind can only deal with so many options and make so many choices before it starts to lose energy. That's why buys like candy bars and magazines at the checkout(付款处) in the store can be hard to resist. We've used up all our good decision-making skills. The same goes for our workday. Making lots of decisions not only tires us, it can also put us in a bad mood. That's
why it's important to make your most important decisions in the morning rather than at the end of a tiring day.
When we're tired, we often save our energy by making choices based on a single factor(因素) like price, rather than considering all the other factors that go into making the best decision. Another study out of Columbia Uni-versity shows that this happens when people are given a lot of features(特点) to choose from when buying a car. After a while, people start asking for the common option rather than carefully weighing each decision.
This can also happen when faced with a decision in your creative work. Given endless options of which route to take, we sometimes end up going with the more usual path simply because it's the easier way to go. So it's im-portant to put limits on your options, which can develop your creativity and help you make a better decision.
In other words, letting yourself have fewer options to choose from can help you arrive at a more creative answer.
30.According to Barry Schwartz, the more options people have, ????.
A.the better choice they will make B.the more easily they will make a choice
C.the happier they will feel to make a choice D.the more likely they will regret their choice31.The word “resist” in Paragraph 3 probably means “ ????”.
A.explain B.avoid C.decide D.afford
32.When a person is tired from comparing many kinds of products, he is likely to ????.
A.consider the price most
B.choose a more common kind
C.read more reviews from others
D.weigh all the factors very carefully
33.The writer believes that ????.
A.people are unwilling to use energy to make decisions
B.people usually take the easiest way to save their energy
C.limited choices can help people reach a creative decision
D.spending more time thinking helps make better decisions
根据第二段最后的“And the possibility that they will regret their choice increases.”
根据第三段第二句“We make poorer decisions when we are tired”和第三句“The mind can only deal with so many options and make so many choices before it starts to lose energy.”
根据最后一段“In other words, letting yourself have fewer options to choose from can help you arrive at a more creative answer.”
Can you remember a time when somebody was kind to you?Maybe a stranger allowed you to go in front of him in a queue. Or perhaps a friend helped you in a much deeper way. There are a million ways to offer kind-ness.
Why should we be kind?
Being kind is a win-win situation. It brings happiness to both the receiver and the doer of this kind action. Let's imagine you have a workmate who always does a very good job. How about taking a moment to mention this to him?Your workmate will be happy to receive some praise, and you will probably feel good about yourself for having spread a little joy.
What are “random acts of kindness”?
Many organizations encourage people to do kind acts whenever and wherever possible. Their idea is that it doesn't take any plan to be kind, just a little bit of effort. Perhaps the strongest supporters of this idea are the Random yourself to a big meal. By being kind to yourself, you will be kinder to the world around you.
What is World Kindness Day?
World Kindness Day takes place on 13 November. People in many countries celebrate this day by being kind and having lots of fun. One typical event is to use“kindness cards”. You hand a kindness card to somebody when you do a kind act for him. Then it is his turn to pass on the card by doing a kind act for another person.
Being kind has a sort of ripple(涟漪)effect. This means that one kind action leads to more and more. So don't wait for kindness to find you, go and start a new ripple!

Li Hua题目②
Diligence is a must for us to reach our goals. I never realized it until I tried every effort to win the English speech competition last year.
It was quite a big challenge for me because I was not that confident about my oral English and I was shy to speak in public. To give a better performance, I made full use of my spare time to prepare for it. I recorded my lines and asked my foreign teacher to correct my pronunciation. Then I kept practising day and night. Besides, I seized every chance to speak in front of my family and friends. The more I practised, the more confident I be-came. In the end, I won the competition and got a prize.
It was so great that all my efforts paid off. I felt so proud of myself.

A week later, the father was sent to hospital because of his heart problem. While the son was cleaning up the old man's desk, he noticed an old diary. On the first page, it read, “For My Beloved Son”.
Out of curiosity, the son sat down by the desk and read through the diary. On one page, it wrote, “Today my lit-tle son aged three was sitting with me on the sofa. When a crow was sitting on the window, my son asked me 23 times what it was, and I replied to him all 23 times that it was a crow. And each time I hugged(拥抱)him loving-ly. I didn't feel troubled at all. I just simply wish all his questions answered, and all his dreams achieved.”Reading all of this, the son felt something so wrong with his impatience and shouting at his father the other day. The brain has a large pool of clean, clear fluid(流体) called cerebrospinal fluid. Biologists call it the CSF. The CSF fills the space that surrounds the brain, and wastes from inside the brain make their way out to the CSF, which gets the waste into the blood. What was surprising to them was that the fluid on the outside of the brain didn't stay on the outside. Instead, the CSF goes into and through the brain along the outsides of the blood vessels(血管), and it was actually helping to clear away and clean the waste from the spaces between the brain's cells(细胞). It's only happening in the sleeping brain.
Recent research suggests that what's happening is that when the brain is awake and is at its most busy, it puts off clearing away the waste from the spaces between its cells until later. When we go to sleep, it gets into a kind of cleaning mode to clear away the waste from the spaces between its cells. We go to sleep every single night, but our brains never rest. While our body is still and our mind is off walking in dreams somewhere, our brain is hard at work. Like our housework, it's a dirty and thankless job, but it's also important. In your house, if you stop cleaning your kitchen for a month, your home will become completely un-
livable very quickly. But in the brain, the situation is much more serious, because when it comes to cleaning the brain, it is the very health and fun_ction of the mind and the body that's at stake. That is why understanding these very basic housekeeping functions of the brain today may prevent and treat diseases of the mind tomorrow.
27.What does the underlined phrase “at stake” in the last paragraph mean?
A.In a healthy situation. B.In a dangerous situation.
C.In an amazing situation. D.In an unlivable situation.28.What can we learn from the passage?
A.Sleeping makes our brain feel murky.
B.The CSF can clean the waste in our brain.
C.Our brain can clean the waste at any time.
D.Sleeping makes our brain have a good rest.
29.What is the main purpose of this passage?
A.To teach us how to have a good sleep.
B.To show the new research of the brain.
C.To introduce how CSF works in our brains.
D.To tell us the importance of sleeping.
But in the brain, the situation is much more serious和前一句的类比关系可知,此处表示“面临危险”,故选B。
D。when they were 16 years old. The research team was interested in this question because home library size can be a good sign of “book-oriented socialization.” Participants were able to choose from a given range of books that included everything from “10 or less” to “more than 500.”
The surveys, which were taken between 2011 and 2015, showed that the average(平均的)number of books in participants' childhood homes was 115, but that number varied widely from country to country. The average li-brary size in Norway was 212 books, for example; in Turkey, it was 27. In all, however, it seemed that more books in the home was linked to higher proficiency in the areas tested by the survey.
The effects were most marked when it came to literacy. Growing up with few books in the home resulted in be-low average literacy levels. Being surrounded by 80 books raised the levels to average, and literacy continued to improve until libraries reached about 350 books, at which point the literacy rates leveled off. The researchers saw similar things when it came to numeracy;the effects were not as pronounced with information communica-tion technology tests, but skills did improve with increased numbers of books.
So, what does the new study tell us? Take, for example, an adult who grew up with hardly any books in the home, but went on to get a university degree compared to an adult who grew up with a large home library, but only had nine years of schooling. The study found that both of their literacy levels were almost the same. “So, literacy-wise, bookish childhood makes up for a good deal of educational advantage,” the study authors write.
Further research is needed to decide exactly why exposure to(沉浸在)books in childhood encourages valuable skills later in life, but the study offers further evidence to suggest that reading has a powerful effect on the mind. And so home library size might be important because, as the researchers note, “children emulate (模仿)parents who read.”
30.The second paragraph is mainly about ????.
A.what the study found out
B.how the study was carried out
C.who were invited to the research
D.why the researchers did the study31.The phrase “leveled off” in Paragraph 4 probably means “ ????”.
A.backed to average B.started falling
C.continued to grow D.stopped rising
32.The example in Paragraph 5 shows ????.
A.the disadvantage of having little school education
B.the effect of having a home library in childhood
C.the necessity of raising people's literacy level
D.the importance of getting a university degree
33.What can we learn from the passage?
A.The study explained why bookish childhood encouraged valuable skills.
B.Adults benefit more from a home library than children.
C.Home library size has little to do with numeracy levels.
D.Parents who love reading benefit children a lot.
根据前面的“Being surrounded by 80 books raised the levels to average, and literacy continued to improve until libraries reached about 350 books”中raised...to...
根据第五段最后一句中的“So, literacy-wise, bookish childhood makes up for a good deal of educational advantage”可知选B。
D。friends decided to make a bike rack by themselves.
They came up with a design. They calculated how much wood they might need. They measured how long the boards should be. They used power tools to cut them and put them together safely. And they did all this in their school's makerspace.
Makerspaces are workspaces where kids can learn to create objects using technology, engineering, art and de-sign. These spaces often feature a mix of high-tech machines, such as 3D printers and robotic kits(工具箱), and simple materials like clay and cardboard.
Izzy goes to the Harley School in New York. It is one of a growing number of schools across the United States with makerspaces. Makerspaces are largely inspired by Maker Faires(创客盛会), which are events that give people a chance to share their creative projects. Each year, about 250,000 people attend the Maker Faires in San Mateo, California, and Queens, New York. Maker Faires have also spread to countries around the world, includ-ing Egypt, France and Thailand.
Schools are introducing makerspaces to the curriculum(课程)because makerspaces give kids a way to have ideas and build something from those ideas. Kima Enerson is a makerspace teacher at the Harley's Lower School(pre-kindergarten to Grade 4), where students learn about the basics of computer software. By third grade, they study coding and how electricity works. In sixth grade, they learn to safely use tools such as drills and saws. When students get to high school, Enerson shows them how to apply their skills to solve global problems. “Through-out the process of designing, students are learning to create something to better the world,” she says.

We should protect the environment because the earth is our home, so it's our duty to protect it. Everyone must do something to protect the environment. I do some things in my daily life.
First, I turn off the lights at once when I don't need them and I spend less time on computer games to save elec-tricity. What's more, I use cloth shopping bags instead of plastic bags when I go shopping. Finally, I use both sides of paper as much as I can.
In a word, I try my best to protect the environment. I'm sure that everyone can help make the earth a better place to live in.

1.—Hi, Mike, is this ????storybook?
—Oh, yes. It's a birthday gift from my uncle.
A.my B.your C.his D.her答案????B 句意:——嗨,Mike,这是你的故事书吗?——哦,是的。 B。2.I would like to take part in the volunteer work ????May Day.
A.in B.on C.at D.for答案????B 句意:我想在五一劳动节参加志愿服务。
3.— ????is it from here to the shopping center?
—It's about ten minutes' walk.
A.How far B.How long
C.How much D.How soon答案????A 句意:——从这儿到购物中心有多远?——步行的话大概十分钟的路程。 A。4.—Excuse me, ????I take a photo of this beautiful drawing?
—I'm afraid not. There is a sign “No Photos”.
A.may B.must C.should D.need答案????A 句意:——请问,我可以给这幅美丽的画作拍张照吗?——恐怕不行。 根据下文提示“I'm afraid not.” 因此选A。
5.Car racing is exciting, ????it's very dangerous.
A.and B.or C.so D.but答案????D 句意:赛车激动人心,但也非常危险。 D。6.Nowadays people wish to eat ????food than before to keep fit.
A.healthy B.healthier
7.—How does your father go to work every day, David?
—He usually ????to work by bike.
A.goes B.is going
C.will go D.went
A。8.—Where are the kids?
—They ????basketball on the playground now.
A.play B.played
C.will play D.are playing
9.I ????Mr. Smith since he moved to Shanghai.
A.didn't hear from B.don't hear from
C.won't hear from D.haven't heard from
D。10.—Did you watch the basketball match on TV last night?

A.watches B.was watching
C.will watch D.has watched答案????B 句意:——昨晚你在电视上看篮球比赛了吗?——我想看来着,但是我妈妈那个时候在看她最喜欢的电视节目。
11.I think more and more work ????by robots in the future.
A.does B.will do
C.is done D.will be done答案????D 句意:我认为将来越来越多的工作会交给机器人去做。 D。12.—Can you tell me ????the prize, Tom?

A.when you got B.when did you get
C.when will you get D.when you will get答案????A 句意:——Tom,你能告诉我你什么时候获的奖吗?——去年。 A。One time, when I misheard what he said three times in a row, he 15???? that I had become too old and started to hear worse. An Unforgettable Experience
It was the week before Christmas, and there were a lot of people waiting in a long queue at the post office hall. It seemed that no one was moving. I came to the self-service machine where the queue was much shorter.
I don't like self-service because I'm not good at it. The machine always asks me something I don't know how to answer. I hate this. I like the old-fashioned way: hand to hand, human to human. I think it is fast and friendly.
The woman in the front of the queue was clicking away at the screen. And the clicks were surprisingly loud. There were many signs of hesitation(犹豫)on her part. I felt sorry for her. The machine could smell fear and ner-vousness. The next person took a long time, too. I breathed deeply. By the time it was my turn, I was so nervous that I felt the beat of my heart.
I felt a growing pressure and I tried to minimize(减少)the seconds between clicks. Finally, it was time to slide in a credit card. The machine didn't take it. “Trying putting it in the other way,” the gentleman behind me sug-gested. No good.“I've got a different card,” I said, and looked for it in my handbag, beginning to sweat. The machine wanted a PIN(个人密码), but not the one I suggested.
“Start over,” I clicked; I tried the first card again.
Oh, no. I had to start all over again.
“I'm sorry,” I said, looking back, embarrassed. “You all go ahead.”
“Don't give up,”said the nice man behind me.“Try it again. We're all friends here, right?”
Seeing smiles on their faces, I tried again, clicked carefully and introduced my credit card as if I were presenting it to the queen. Finally, I made it!
I couldn't have been happier. Everyone burst into applause(鼓掌). Comfort and joy!24.Before Christmas, the post office ????.

Are people less happy or more happy the older they get? If you answered more happy, then you were right. Based on a study published two years ago, people generally become happier and experience less worry after age 50. In fact, the study found that by the age of 85, people are happier with their life than they were at 18.
The findings came from a Gallup survey of more than 340,000 adults in the USA in 2008. At that time, those adults were between the ages of 18 and 85. Professor Arthur Stone from Stony Brook University led the study. His team found that levels of stress were highest among adults between the ages of 22 and 25. Stress levels
dropped sharply after people reached their 50s. Happiness was highest among the youngest adults and those in their early 70s. But the people least likely to report feeling negative(消极的)emotions were those in their 70s and 80s.
The survey also found that men and women have similar emotional patterns(模式)as they grow older. However, women at all ages reported more sadness, stress and worry than men did.The researchers also considered possible influences like having young children, being jobless or being single. But they found that influences like these did not affect the levels of happiness and well-being related to age.
So why would happiness increase with age? One point is that, as people get older, they become more thankful for what they have and have better control of their emotions. They also spend less time thinking about bad expe-riences.
Aging can bring other obvious improvements. In a study, people in their 80s reported the fewest sleep problems. Researchers surveyed more than 150,000 American adults. The study was led by Michael Grandner at the Uni-versity of Pennsylvania. The original goal of the study was to prove the popular belief that aging is connected
with increased sleep problems. The survey did find an increase during middle age, especially in women. But ex-cept for that, people reported that they felt their sleep quality(质量)improved as they got older. And a better sleep quality brings a deeper sense of happiness.27.What is the writer's main purpose in writing this passage?
A.To discuss how aging may affect people. B.To prove people are happier as they get older.
C.To offer advice on how to improve sleep quality. D.To encourage old people to become more thankful.
28.What can we learn according to the findings mentioned in this passage?
A.50-year-olds have the highest stress level.
B.Being single may make people feel less happy.
C.Men always feel sadder and more stressful than women.
D.Comparatively speaking, 70- or 80-year-olds feel happier.
29.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?

Over the past decade, an increasing stress has been placed on the importance of Science, Technology, Engi-neering and Mathematics (STEM) related classes in primary, middle and high school education in the US. The reason for this trend is well founded: research and test scores from the 1980s and 1990s showed that our students had fallen behind their international peers in all of these subject areas. Education officials, teachers and parents all felt that the situation needed to be changed, and quickly. However, in the rush to play catch-up in STEM-re-lated areas, there's one important aspect that is being neglected (忽略): the Fine and Performing Arts, particular-ly drama.
It's long been understood that a study of drama at the primary, middle and high school level helps students im-prove in many areas, such as self-confidence, self-expression, communication skills, teamwork, and imagination. Most educators and parents agree that all of these are important for students to develop at any age, but it is diffi-cult for the same parents and teachers to prioritize (优先安排) study time and classroom time to a subject like drama over subjects like Math, Physics or Computer Science. It's even more difficult for policymakers and school officials to channel funds (资金) towards classes like drama, when the skills arts subjects develop are considered “soft skills.” When the modern world is calling out for “hard” skills, like those needed to suc-ceed in the tech-driven 21st century, how can they possibly prove it is reasonable to spend their funds that are becoming smaller and smaller on anything but STEM subjects?
The short answer to the question “Why spend time and money on drama?” is that drama education has been scientifically proven to improve students' achievement, especially in communication skills that are very impor-tant to a STEM education. As we develop students with highly refined skills in STEM subjects, it's equally im-portant that we train the teachers that will support continued growth in these areas. An active, communicative
teacher is the best way to get students on board in the study of STEM subjects, which can be unbearably dry. The best way to develop active communication skills? Drama. The next area in which the communication skills can be developed is publication and conference presentation. Drama improves students' public speaking skills necessary for STEM students to effectively present papers in conferences and their writing skills necessary to publish papers. It's also very important for students to be able to work well with one another. In the real STEM world, almost all scientific work happens in teams. Without the “soft ” interpersonal skills necessary to navi-gate (导航) all of these interactions, no matter how technologically skilled one becomes, he or she will be at a disadvantage without the ability to communicate and work in teams.
While the nationwide trend (趋势) to focus on playing catch-up in STEM education is reasonable, practical, and absolutely necessary, it's important not to forget the huge effect arts, specifically drama education, have on the overall education of our children. The question parents, educators, and policymakers should be asking them-selves is not “Can we afford to support arts education in schools?” but rather “Can we afford not to?”
30.Why did Americans start to stress STEM-related classes?
A.Because the world has moved into a tech-driven century.
B.Because STEM classes have long been neglected in America.C.Because education officials prefer STEM classes to arts classes.
D.Because US students are expected to be at an advantage in these areas.

You can study the English language for years but still not understand a native speaker of English(以英语为母语的人) when you meet one. Native speakers say a lot of things, but you can't find them in any dictionary. Well, don't worry. Here's a secret: a lot of British people can't understand each other either!
There are different local accents(口音)across the UK, and a number of areas have several different accents. That
is, they have their own vocabulary and expressions. There were at least six different accents born to London the last time I counted.
Worse than that, it is not just where a person is born in the UK that decides his accent. For example, a language and its accents often change across class or level of education. Another example is how languages can differ a-mong age groups in the UK. The words and pronunciation used by young people in the UK can be completely different compared with those used by adults. They are creating a “yoof culture.”
The word “yoof” is a slang(俚语) spelling of “youth”. Some people don't consider “yoof” to be a posi-tive(积极的) term since its pronunciation is easier and lazier than“youth”. Other people see the term as posi-
tive, because it describes how young people are creating their own language, idea and culture.
When parents find it difficult to understand their children, the children can say more things without the examin-ing of their parents. In this way, young people are starting to find freedom, independence and self-expression. Even though certain groups of society worry about “yoof culture”, new words keep appearing in our daily life.
So learners should have no fear about communication with native speakers. Even British people don't speak
English properly! The UK no longer owns the English language.34.What's the secret according to the passage?

Li Hua题目②
I still remember that unforgettable experience. Last Friday, on a P.E. class, my classmate Tom knocked me down while we were running in the playground. I felt so hurt on my leg. When I struggled up, I saw Tom still in a great shock, without saying sorry. I got angry and almost started shouting at him. At the very moment he said,“I am so sorry, Li Hua. I didn't see you running towards me. Someone in front of me blocked my view. Shall I go to the school clinic with you?”Hearing his words, I understood and forgave him. After school, we went home together.
From this, I understand that listening is the best way to avoid misunderstanding and argument. Listening to and understanding others makes not only others comfortable but ourselves happy.
