My name is Deirdre Veneracion and I am a paraglider pilot. I’ve been paragliding since I was 11.
My dad and I arrive at our local fly site on a June morning. We meet our instructor and spend the first 20 minutes watching the wind cycles. I go through my pre-flight steps and turn on my radio. At last, I take a step and feel the ground under me fall away. I feel the pressure of my weight on the canopy (伞衣).
After 15 minutes of playing with the wind, my father radios me from the place where he is about to take off. “How is the wind?” “Perfect!” I say. Dad takes off behind me.
I have done almost 100 flights and yet every flight amazes me just as much or even more than my first. I love the unpredictability of each flight. Every flight is different. After 15 minutes, I decide to land.
Now, I’m over a rice field. It is a much smaller landing than most landing zones but it’s possible. Out of nowhere, I feel my canopy become unstable (不稳定的). It loses pressure and falls directly in front of me. I am falling. I have butterflies in my stomach. I pull my brake line, in the hope that my wing will get pressure again but it doesn’t. I look towards my dad and see that he is also in trouble. It’s as if we were inside a washing machine being thrown up and down. I won’t make it to the landing zone in front of me. To my right is a narrow stream with hardly any water in it. I make my decision: the narrow stream is my best chance of landing safely.
As I touch down, I check on my dad and am glad to hear that he is fine. Local villagers come to check on me but, surprisingly, I am uninjured.
This is one of those times when we are reminded that no preparation can prevent Mother Nature from surprising us.
24. What does the author do before taking off?
A. She has a talk with her father. B. She watches the weather.
C. She turns off the radio. D. She gives instructions.
25. What does the attraction of paragliding lie in the author’s eyes?
A. The pleasant wind.
B. The success of each flight.
C. The excitement of landing.
D. The uncertainty of each flight.
26. What kind of feeling does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 5 probably show?
A. Nervousness. B. Happiness. C. Anger. D. Luck.
27. What happens in the process of the author’s landing?
A. She hurts herself.
B. She asks her dad for help.
C. She sees a washing machine below.
D. She changes her mind about the landing site.
C
It’s early morning, and Katie Smith hears a rooster crowing (报晓). It’s time to get up and start working. She and her husband, Chris Cashen, start the day early. They own and run the Farm at Miller’s Crossing, in Hudson, New York.
With the help of 10 workers and, sometimes, the Cashen kids?—?Lael, 12, Connelly, 10, AnneMae, 8, and Christopher John, 6?—?Smith and Cashen harvest (收割) crops during much of the year. They grow vegetables and other plants. They also raise and care for some animals.
Because the Farm at Miller’s Crossing grows different kinds of crops, Cashen says the biggest challenge is timing. Several times a year, workers prepare the soil and plant crops. At other times, they transfer (转移) plants from the greenhouse into the fields. The farmers store the fall vegetables in coolers and sell them throughout the winter.
Cashen and Smith grow their crops without the use of chemicals. When crops are ready to be harvested, workers pick them daily, wash them, and put them in boxes. In June, they work up to 70 hours a week. As fall nears, workers try to finish the daily harvesting while there is still daylight. The crops are sold through programs that provide buyers with fresh produce weekly.
Living on a farm has its?perks. The Cashen kids swim in a river from which the crops get their water. They ride their bikes in wide-open spaces. When harvesting tomatoes, they sometimes have exciting tomato fights. They have a big family with which to share their adventures.
Everyone takes part in the business. The kids feed the horses. The boys care for the pigs. Lael says she likes transferring plants and selling produce. “It’s fun and really busy,” says Lael, “but it’s just a part of life.”

We interviewed two people, one who went from the country to the city and one who did the opposite.
Janet Lincoln is a salesgirl who moved to St. Louis five years ago. Here’s what Janet told us:
“Five years ago I used to live in a small town called Lemon Falls. I grew up and went to high school there. After I graduated I worked in a supermarket. Lemon Falls had a population of about 800 people, and I knew every single one of them. They all knew everything about me, too. You couldn’t do anything without everyone in town knowing about it. The first chance I got I moved to St. Louis and I love it. I don’t know as many people now as I used to, but that’s OK. I have a few good friends, and I see them when I want to. I kind of like being anonymous. I’d never go back to Lemon Falls.”
Troy Henson had the opposite experience. He and his wife, Darla, and their two children moved from St. Louis to Bloomfield three years ago. Here’s what Troy told us:
“The best thing we ever did was get out of St. Louis. Don’t get me wrong; St. Louis is as good a place as any other city, I suppose — if you like cities, that is. We don’t. Both Darla and I grew up in St. Louis. We met at college and got married. Then the kids came along and life got difficult. We didn’t know any of our neighbors. We both had good jobs, but it always seemed like there was never enough money. That all changed when we moved to Bloomfield. I don’t make as much money as I used to, but then we don’t have as many expenses as we did. We know our neighbors. Life is good. We’d never leave Bloomfield.”
32. What troubled Janet when she was in Lemon Falls?
A. She had no friends.
B. There was no privacy.
C. There was a lot of competition.
D. She couldn’t find a well-paid job.
33. What does the underlined word “anonymous” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Alone. B. Prepared. C. Sociable. D. Unknown.
34. Different from Janet, Troy _____.
A. prefers country life
B. moved to a bigger city
C. grew up in a smaller town
D. knows little about his new neighbors
35. What is Troy’s opinion on living in Bloomfield?
A. It is a little boring.
B. It is quite comfortable.
C. It costs a lot of money.
D. It creates a safe environment.
