I. Teaching objectives
1. Knowledge and Skill Objectives
(1) Students know more about the information of English, such as its history and development.
(2) Students can grasp some important events happened to English, for example, American
English and British English were different in spelling at first.
(3) Students can grasp the main ideas of the 5 paragraphs.
(4) Students can grasp the reading strategies: skimming, scanning and detailed reading.
2. Process and Method Objectives
(1) Students can grasp the main ideas by reading the topic sentences of each paragraph and
matching.
(2) Students can get a better understanding of the development of English by applying reading
strategies such as scanning and detailed reading to finish the time table.
(3) Students will strengthen their independent thinking abilities and form a reasonable and
scientific thinking habit through the pair work and group work to analyze the last sentence
of the text.
(4) Students' self-study and cooperative learning abilities will be enhanced through the group
discussions.
3. Emotional attitude and Values Objectives
(1) Students' interest in English can be enhanced by performing to finish the interview task
that they can experience as a reporter and interviewers.
(2) Students will strengthen their patriotic feelings because of the goal that how they can make
Chinese English become one kind of the world English one day.
(3) Students can have a better understanding of the differences between Chinese and English.
(4) Students can understand the importance of learning English better.
II. Analysis of students studying situation
Most of students in this class are not very good at English. Also, they are so quiet that only several students are active in class. So we have more group work in order that students can help one another to finish the task better. And try to stimulate their learning motivation step by step and cultivate their spirit of cooperation and independent thinking abilities. Give them some chances to show their own self so that they can show their thoughts out. And this may help them to enhance their confidence and interest in English.
III. Key points and Difficulties
1. Key points:
(1) Let students have a better understanding of the development of English and the importance
of learning English.
(2) Let students be brave enough to show their own thoughts during group work.
2. Difficulties:
(1) How to train students reading and speaking skills like skimming and interviewing through
learning this text and discussion.
(2) How to arouse students' enthusiasm of learning English by different kinds of activities.
(3) How to help students comprehend the development of English well.
IV. Teaching Procedures
Step 1 Lead in (2 minutes)
Have a free talk about how much students know about English.
Step 2 Pre-reading (1 minute)
Ask students to read the title of the text to predict the content and guess the meaning of
the "Road". And keep the guessing in their mind.
Step 3 While-reading (20 minutes)
1. Fast reading
Task 1: Ask students to go through the text quickly in 3 minutes and match the main
ideas with each paragraph.
Para. 1 A. English now is also spoken in South Asia.
Para. 2 B. English was settled by the 19th century.
Para. 3 C. English has changed over time.
Para. 4 D. Native speakers can understand each other.
Para. 5 E. English began to be spoken in many countries because of voyages.
Task 2: Divide the text into to parts, and ask students to have a try to summarize the
main ideas of each part.
2. Detailed reading
Task 1: Ask students to read Para. 1 carefully and answer the question in 1 minute and
then ask some students to share their ideas..
Q: How did English begin to be spoken in many other countries?
A: Because of the voyages that Englishmen made to conquer other countries.
Task 2: Ask students to work in the group of sit to read from Para. 3 to Para. 5 and
finish the chart on development of English in 4 minutes.

Only time will tell. Ask students to have a discussion with each other about what
the writer wanted to tell us with this ending in 4 minutes. The following sentence
structures may help them:

Step 4 Post-reading (15 minutes)
Task: an interview on why people learn English
1. Ask students to ask and answer as a reporter and interviewers in group of six about what
they think of English and why people learn English in 6 minutes.
2. After group work, ask some groups to act their interviews out.
Step 5 Summary (5 minutes)
(1) With the help of PPT, ask the whole class to summarize the development of English
by filling the blanks.
(2) Help students have a better understanding of the tittle by choosing the right answer.
(3) Share my views on learning English to help students know the importance of learning
English. And call on them for trying their best to learn English.
Step 6 Homework (2 minutes)
(1) Learn more about the history and development of English by using the internet or
through books.
(2) Make a plan about how to learn English better, and finish the plan with at least 5
sentences.

Feedback: Students are a little shy at first, so they are not active enough to answer the
questions. It takes a long time in Lead-in part. And they are not so good at
skimming that they are not able to catch the main ideas of each paragraph
as quickly as I thought. Maybe I need to focus more on how to improve their
reading skills. And it's hard for them to summarize the main ideas in one word.
But while having discussion, they have various thoughts. And they hope they will
make Chinese English become one kind of world English one day. Their shows
are good where I can find their hard work on the practice.
