Lesson 12The Snowman
Teaching goals
1. Ss will be able to understand the story by listening and reading activities.
2. Ss will be able to retell the story with the help of the key words and pictures.

Teaching Procedures
Step1Pre-reading
Activity1. Song
Ss will sing a song about seasons on Page27
Activity2. Talking about the seasons
We will talk about seasons, especially the winter.
e.g. What’s your favourite season?
Why? Do you like winter?
Why or why not?
What do you like to do in winter?
Activity3. Talking about the snowman
T shows the picture of a snowman.
T:What’s this?
S1:It’s a snowman.
T: Can you make a snowman?
S2: Yes, I can.
T:What can your snowman do? Can he sing a song?
Ss: No.
T: This lesson we are going to meet a different snowman.
T: What is the difference?
Ss try to guess.
Step2 While-reading Ss will learn the story from general to specific, and then to general. Activity 1. Reading in the overall perception
Students read the whole story quickly and think about the question:
What could the snowman do in the story?
Ss: The snowman could talk and skate.
Activity2. Reading in details Ss learn the details of the story with teacher picture by picture.
Picture1 1.
Ss listen to the tape about picture 1 and answer the following questions:
Who are talking?
What does John’s mother tell him to do?
What did John do?
2. Ss simulate dialogue between John and his mum.
Picture2
Ss look at the picture2 and predict what comes next in the story.
T:Why does John give his hat to the snowman?
Ss: Because it is cold and snowy.
T: What happened after the snowman got the hat?
Ss: It talked to John.
T: How does John feel?
T:How do you feel if a snowman talk to you.
Picture3-picture5
Ss read text about picture3-5, tick or cross.
(T) The snowman could go because he had two feet.
(T) It was easy for the snowman to skate fast when he put on John’s skates.
(F) The snowman can skate forever.
Check the answers and find the reasons.
Picture6 Ss guess the ending of the story.
Ss look at the picture6 and talk about the question:
What did John do for the snowman ?
How does the snowman feel?
How does John’s mother feel?
What will she do?
Activity3. Listen and imitate
Ss watch the video about the story again as a whole and imitate the story to improve their correct pronciation and proper intonation.
Part3. Post-reading
Activity1. Group work
Students work in group and choose one of the following activities:
a. Read the story in roles.
b. Act out the story.
Activity 2. Retell the story
Ss will learn how to retell or write a story by the following questions:
Activity3. Summary
T: What do you think of John? Is he a good boy? Why?
Ss: Because he likes to help others.
T: Do you want to make friends with John?
Activity4. Homework
1. Students will retell the story to their parents or friends. Try to write the story in their own sentences.
2. Ss will do the activity book.
