I visited Aruba last week.On the first day,I mainly enjoyed comfortable sunshine on the beaches there. But I needed more than sunshine and sand to fill my week.

From the church I made my way to the California Lighthouse, named for the steamship California that sank nearby in 1891.After spending some time there,I went to La Trattoria El Faro Blanco,an Italian restaurant that sits on top of the hill and offers scenic views.

What does travel consist of?
Answers can be as varied(各种各样的) as worrying about your budget(预算),trying new dishes at meals, climbing mountains and riding on crowded local buses. But to Mishana Khot,a US travel fanatic(达人),travel is “more than just a stamp in your passport—it’s a stamp on your soul(灵魂)”.On the travel website Vagabondish.com,Khot listed some ways that you will change after taking a trip.Take a look.
Travel reveals the big picture.Khot believes we may lose ourselves in our own lives from time to time.Sometimes “we can’t separate our daily existence(存在) from the broader perspective(视角),”she argues.Travel provides a chance to get away from your routine(按部就班的生活).“It forces you to see your life from the outside,” she writes.
Travel makes you more grateful.Whether you travel from a big city to the quiet countryside,or vice versa(反之),there will come a moment when you are grateful for all you have.“When you meet someone with one leg who is hiking up a hill, you will close your eyes for a second and say,‘thank you,’” she said.
Travel improves your social skills.During travel, you’ll be forced to interact(互动) with many, many more people than you’re used to.And sometimes you won’t even be able to use your first language. So just throw away your shyness—that won’t guide you to your destination(目的地).Go and interact with people. They’re an important part of the experience.

Another man-made wonder of the US was built long before the nation was established.About 900 years ago,the Ancestral Puebloan people built villages high in the walls of canyons(大峡谷) in Colorado, where 600 cliff dwellings are now part of the Mesa Verde National Park.
Visitors can stand at the top and look into the dwellings almost hidden in openings of the rock walls. The Puebloan people cut small steps into the rock, which connected buildings containing hundreds of rooms.
The rock walls have protected the buildings from severe weather in the area;therefore, they remain mostly unchanged in the hundreds of years since they were built.
Our final man-made wonder is in the northwestern city of Seattle,Washington. The Space Needle was built as the central structure for the 1962 World’s Fair.
The 184-meter-tall structure was designed by Edward Carlson, which has a wide base on the ground, with its middle narrow and a large ring-like structure on top.The structure was meant to look like a “flying saucer”,a vehicle that was popular in science fiction space travel stories. The saucer includes an observation area and eating place. The restaurant slowly turns to provide visitors with a 360 degree view of Seattle.
The Space Needle was not very costly, and was designed and completed in about a year and opened on the first day of the World’s Fair.
Today, the Space Needle is the most popular place for visitors to Seattle. And it remains the internationally known symbol of the city.

When he was young,my father wasn’t sure what he wanted from life, but something told him to get out of his hometown and begin an adventure. He began travelling to cities in the US,before going on to Australia,New Zealand,New Guinea and the Philippines. He took the whole family along with him and went wherever the road took him.
It’s easy to feel lonely when you’re on the road.As my mother said repeatedly,“We made lots of new friends on our trip—most of them were mechanics(机修工)”,since we often spent hours in repair shops. There were times when we sat by the roadside while waiting for the engine to cool when it was 40℃ outside before a mechanic came.
Getting along sometimes seemed impossible. There were always a lot of arguments, especially among us children, the back-seat passengers about who had to sit in the middle.Even if it was hard,we did learn a lot about forgiveness.
When we were traveling in the Philippines,we drove to Quezon City one day.It should have been a one-hour drive but was nearly three, thanks to bad roads and worse traffic.“Did you put our suitcases in the car?” my father asked my mother as we arrived in Quezon City. From the back seat,we saw her slowly turn toward my father.“No,” she said.“I thought you did.” That was how a seven-hour car trip turned into a 16-hour car trip, which was mostly spent in silence.
On occasions like that,we had to learn to let go of our anger because we were stuck(困在) in a rolling box with the same people for the rest of the journey.
This is why road trips were like mobile(移动的) universities to us.We earned our PHDs(博士学位) in how to get along with other people just by travelling in that old car.

Back in 2001,Pen Hadow and I traveled to the North Pole. One morning we’d just taken down our tent and started skiing.Pen was in front, and I was following him.Suddenly I got a strange feeling that something was behind us.I stopped, looked back and saw a polar bear, walking towards us.
Pen and I planned to stay where we were, try and look big,and frighten it away.Pen had a shotgun that we’d bought in Russia. That was his job.My job was to look big and to take off my skis, hold the skis in the air, make lots of noise, and frighten away the bear.Pen raised the gun and fired into the air. However,it jammed and failed to work.
The bear was walking towards us.Pen tried again, but again it didn’t work. Then he walked towards the bear, and I thought,“Wow,Pen’s gone completely mad. He’s going to get eaten. What should I do?”
I thought maybe I could throw a ski at it or stab(刺) it with a ski pole or something.Suddenly, the bear stopped.Pen stopped.Bang! The gun went off in the air. There was a big cloud of smoke that I thought surprised Pen and me more than it surprised the bear. The animal looked up,looked down, turned around and walked off.Pen turned round and said,“Quick, get the camera and take a photograph,” and that was when suddenly I felt really nervous.I couldn’t even undo the zip on our bag.
That was the morning of the second day of this journey. We were out there for two months—fifty-nine days, but we never saw another bear that close.

Now many young people are traveling around the world on their own,not because they have no one to travel with, but because they prefer to go alone.
Kristina Wegscheider from California first traveled alone when she was at college. She believes that it is something everyone should do at least once in their life.“It opens up your mind to new things and pushes you out of your comfort zone.” Wegscheider has visited 46 countries covering all seven continents.
In foreign countries, with no one to help you read a map, look after you if you get ill,or lend you money if your wallet is stolen. It is challenging. This is what drives young people to travel alone. It is seen as character building and a chance to prove that they can make it on their own.
Chris Richardson decided to leave his sales job in Australia to go traveling last year.He set up a website,The Aussie Nomad,to document his adventures. He said he wished he had traveled alone earlier.“The people you meet, the places you visit,or the things you do,everything is up to you and it forces you to grow as a person,” said the 30-year-old man.
Richardson describes traveling alone like “a shot in the arm”,which “makes you a more confident person that is ready to deal with anything”.He said,“The feeling of having conquered something on my own is a major part of what drives me each day when I’m dealing with a difficult task.I walk around with my head up because I know deep down inside that nothing is impossible if you try.”
The great 19th century explorer John Muir once said,“Only by going alone in silence can one truly get into the heart of the wilderness.”

第二部分 阅读理解(共两节,满分35分)
第一节 (共10小题;每小题2.5分,满分25分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
A
One summer my friend and I decided to go to Italy for a holiday and we decided to travel there without going through a travel agency. You know, you would be submerged(淹没) in crowds of tourists and lose lots of opportunities to get familiar with the country more closely. We started to think over our trip and managed to come up with a free tour of Italy.
The trip was not very long but it was still very impressive(印象深刻的).We look forward to going there again! Of course,we spent lots of time arranging(安排) the trip, but it was well worth it! Of course I was afraid that something would go wrong and I was especially anxious about my visa, but everything went quite smoothly in the end.
The most difficult part was getting a visa without an invitation. In the Italian consulate(领事馆),one must hand in some official papers proving that one has a hotel booked for oneself in order to get the visa. Then we had to solve the ticket problem.Airlines often sell cheap tickets and we bought ours far in advance. The next step was to book a hotel. We finally booked a hotel about 30km away from the heart of Rome and it was the perfect choice for our trip.
Every day we took a train that carried us to the heart of Rome. Our big house, which was surrounded by the forest, was a rare place for the fresh air and absolute silence, beautiful views, hospitable hosts, comfortable living conditions delighting us to no end.Besides this,we were very lucky that our mistress(女主人) was a Russian. She gave us a lot of advice that was of great use.She told us what transport to choose and where the best places to go.
Don’t be afraid to arrange your trip by yourself. It’s not difficult! The only thing I’ll say right now is that we really enjoyed traveling by ourselves. We walked with a map and a guide-book to wherever we wanted and we even met some of our fellow countrymen on the way just two or three times. So,if you’re also planning a “single” trip, don’t forget to take a Russian-Italian phrasebook as people in Italy prefer to speak in their native tongue.
21.What is the most difficult thing for the author to prepare for his trip to Italy?
A.Buying cheap airline tickets to Italy before the traveling.
B.Getting a visa without an invitation from the Italian consulate.
C.Booking a comfortable hotel on his own in Rome.
D.Solving the ticket problem far in advance.
答案 B
解析 细节理解题。根据第三段第一句“The most difficult part was getting a visa without an invitation.”可知,最难的事情是在没有邀请函的情况下向意大利大使馆申请签证,因此选B。A、C、D三项虽然文中都涉及了,但是都不符合题干。故选B。
22.Which of the following questions has NOT been answered in the passage?
A.Why did the author decide to go to Italy for a holiday for the first time?
B.Why did the author decide not to follow a travel agency?
C.How did the author prepare for his trip?
D.What tools did the author use for his traveling?
答案 A
解析 细节理解题。文章第一段第二句讲述了他不愿意随旅行社出游的原因,B项被提到了;文章第二、三两段讲述作者是怎么准备他的旅行的,所以C项被提到了;最后一段的“We walked with a map and a guide-book to wherever we wanted...”提到了D项。纵观全文,作者并没有提到第一次他去意大利旅游的原因。故选A。
23.From the text we can know the author ????????.
A.enjoys traveling everywhere in the world
B.likes being accompanied by tour guides
C.advised us to arrange trips by ourselves
D.met with a lot of his countrymen in Italy
B
Three-quarters of a million tourists flock to the white beaches every year, but this booming industry has come at a price.Poisonous smoke rising from open fires, rubbish made up of plastic bottles,packets...it’s?a?far?cry?from the white sands, clear waters and palm trees that we associate with the Maldives(马尔代夫),the paradise island holiday destination set in the Indian Ocean.
Of its 200 inhabited islands, which are spread across an area of 35,000 square miles,99 are good resorts(旅游胜地).So many tourists come every year, more than double the local population.Of these tourists, over 100,000 travel from the UK.The capital,Malé,is four times more densely populated than London.Given these facts,it’s hardly surprising that the Maldives has a waste disposal problem.
Years ago, when the tourists left, the government had to deal with a stream of rubbish.Their solution was to turn one of the islands into a dumping ground.Four miles west of Malé is the country’s dumping ground,Thilafushi. What you are seeing here is a view of the Maldives on which no honeymooners will ever clap eyes. Each visitor produces 3.5 kg of waste per day.The country dumps more than 330 tons of rubbish on the island every day.
Now,since many waste boats, fed up with waiting seven hours or more, directly offload their waste into the sea,the government of the Maldives has banned the dumping of waste on the island. So,the waste boats ship the rubbish to India instead.
24.What is the main cause of the waste disposal problem?
A.The big local population.
B.Too many waste boats.
C.The large number of tourists.
D.Open fires on the islands.
答案 C
解析 细节理解题。由第二段的“So many tourists come every year, more than double the local population.Of these tourists, over 100,000 travel from the UK.The capital,Malé,is four times more densely populated than London.”可知,马尔代夫面临的垃圾处理难题主要是由大量的游客造成的。故选C。
25.The underlined part can probably be replaced by “????????”.
A.it’s quite similar to
B.it’s a long distance from
C.it’s a loud shout from
D.it’s totally different from

Imagine, one day, getting out of bed in Beijing and being at your office in Shanghai in only a couple of hours, and then, after a full day of work, going back home to Beijing and having dinner there.
Sounds unusual, doesn’t it? But it’s not that unrealistic, with the development of China’s high-speed railway system. And that’s not all.China has an even greater high-speed railway plan to connect the country with Southeast Asia, and eventually Eastern Europe.China is negotiating to extend its own high-speed railway network to up to 17 countries in 10 to 15 years, eventually reaching London and Singapore.
China has proposed three such projects. The first would possibly connect Kunming with Singapore via Vietnam and Malaysia.Another could start in Urumqi and go through Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, and possibly to Germany. The third would start in the northeast and go north through Russia and then into Western Europe. The new system would still follow China’s high-speed railway standard. And the trains would be able to go 346 kilometers an hour, almost as fast as some airplanes.Of course, there are some technical challenges to overcome. There are so many issues that need to be settled, such as safety, rail gauge(轨距),maintenance of railway tracks. But the key issue is really money.China is already spending hundreds of billions of yuan on domestic railway expansion.
China prefers that the other countries pay in natural resources rather than with capital investment.Resources from those countries could stream into China to sustain development. It’ll be a win-win project. For other countries, the railway network will definitely create more opportunities for business, tourism and so on,not to mention the better communication among those countries.
For China, such a project would not only connect it with the rest of Asia and bring some much-needed resources, but would also help develop China’s far west.We foresee that in the coming decades, millions of people will migrate to the western regions, where the land is empty and resources unused. With high-speed trains, people will set up factories and business centers in the west once and for all.And they’ll trade with Central Asian and Eastern European countries.

第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
On a bright, warm July afternoon,Mac Hollan,a primary school teacher, was cycling from his home to Alaska with his friends. One of his friends had stopped to make a bicycle repair, but they had encouraged Mac to carry on,and they would catch up with him soon.As Mac pedaled(骑行) along alone,he thought fondly of his wife and two young daughters at home.He hoped to show them this beautiful place someday.
Then Mac heard quick and loud breathing behind him.“Man,that’s a big dog!” he thought. But when he looked to the side,he saw instantly that it wasn’t a dog at all,but a wolf, quickly catching up with him.
Mac’s heart jumped. He found out his can of bear spray. With one hand on the bars,he fired the spray at the wolf.A bright red cloud enveloped the animal, and to Mac’s relief,it fell back, shaking its head. But a minute later,it was by his side again. Then it attacked the back of Mac’s bike, tearing open his tent bag.He fired at the wolf a second time, and again,it fell back only to quickly restart the chase(追赶).
Mac was pedaling hard now.He waved and yelled at passing cars but was careful not to slow down.He saw a steep uphill climb before him.He knew that once he hit the hill,he’d be easy caught up and the wolf’s teeth would be tearing into his flesh.
At this moment,Paul and Becky were driving their car on their way to Alaska. They didn’t think much of it when they saw two cyclists repairing their bike on the side of the road.A bit later, they spotted what they, too, assumed was a dog running alongside a man on a bike.As they got closer, they realized that the dog was a wolf.Mac heard a large vehicle behind him.He pulled in front of it as the wolf was catching up fast, just a dozen yards away now.

I love travelling, but it hasn’t always been my passion. In my first year of university,I started to travel during the holiday.During the Christmas holiday I went to Paris, and during the spring vacation,I visited Athens and various cities in Italy.I was very excited because this was the first time I had travelled abroad with just my friends. This desire to travel started off simply as a way to have something to look forward to after exams, but I soon discovered how important it is to travel.
On my travels I have had the opportunity where I not only experience new and exciting cultures through the art, history, language and food, but also communicate with people who have different views on life.Travelling is a learning experience for both yourself and the people you meet. Some people I met during my travels had never heard of Gambia and it was very delightful to share my African roots with them. When you travel you will meet people who have different cultural backgrounds and as a result, sometimes your own ideas and opinions might be challenged. It’s important to learn to see things from other people’s perspectives(视角) and challenge your own.
This is how I realized that travelling is the realization of home. When you travel you can see a different setting,a different language and a different way of living. All these factors(因素),mixed with a new and exciting adventure, make you realize your own home. Not just the physical location of home, but also your way of life and your outlook.
Travelling is truly an enriching experience and I am always excited about the discoveries that wait for me in my next adventure!

Ⅰ.阅读理解
A
Some people prefer travelling alone, while others want to share it.
Sharing-focused travel
The desire to share our experiences has led to an increase in technology becoming a primary reason for travel, with research finding that two-fifths of the youths born around the year 2000 are actually choosing their travel destination based on how convenient it is for them to share travel experiences through the Internet.
An added factor leading people to use technology on holiday is the new laws which came into play on 15th June. These new laws mean roaming charges(手机漫游费) across Europe are removed,so phone users no longer need worry about costs involved in making calls or using the Internet when abroad—making it easier than ever to keep in touch and share content with those at home.
Whether it’s to research must-see things in the area, compare hotel prices,or simply use digital maps to help us get around, there is no doubt that technology plays an increasing role in our travels. As a result,it’s increasing the travel experience by making it simpler to plan visits and stay safe.
Living like a local
With GPS it’s never been easier to explore hidden locations, while staying confident that you’re safe off the beaten track.AroundMe is an app that locates the user’s position and shows recommendations, reviews and attractions, along with distances from where they are, offering up a whole new side of a destination that otherwise may go unknown.Having access to regularly updated travel reviews opens up plenty of choices, meaning travelers can be free to choose destinations as they will be able to access recommendations as they go.Holiday-goers don’t have to worry about too carefully planning a trip and can concentrate on enjoying the experience.

I was born and raised in England in a culture where privacy and “keeping yourself to yourself” were valued as traditions.Speaking to strangers was not encouraged.People were most hospitable(好客的) and friendly.
However,I have been lucky enough to spend some time in both Italy and the US,where I found traditions of hospitality and politeness to be very different.
I experienced Italian hospitality first-hand on a crowded railway carriage travelling, one afternoon, from Genoa to Florence.Sinking gratefully into an empty seat,I was scolded in rapid Italian by a gentleman who was returning to this seat—it had not been “spare” after all.I apologized in English, and got up to allow him back into the seat. The gentleman obviously had no understanding of the English language, but he,too, realized my genuine(真诚的) mistake. He smiled and gestured for me to remain in the seat, and he himself remained standing in the corridor for the remainder of the journey. The other occupants of the carriage smiled and nodded at me and made me feel quite welcome amongst them.I feel that if this had been in England,a foreigner who made a mistake would not always be so kindly treated.
Transport also featured in the differences I noticed between English and American culture.I flew to New York on a plane with mainly English passengers. We sat together in near silence.Nobody spoke to me nor,as I expected,to anyone else they did not know. They felt it was not polite to interrupt someone else’s privacy. However, when I travelled across the United States, whether by plane or Greyhound bus,I was never short of conversation.Conversation was going on all around me and whoever sat next to me was happy to introduce themselves and ask me about myself. They obviously felt it would have been rude not to speak to another person, whether they were strangers or not.
