When Lina was awoken by the sound of thunder, she was alone on the island. The air was cool and bullfrogs croaked. It was that brief moment when the summer sun had set but the stars hadn't yet appeared. Lina rubbed her eyes and looked around.
“Hello?” she called. “Celia? Marie? ”
There was no response.
The moon was rising now, shedding light on the island. They had always called it “Forgotten Island”because no one but they seemed to remember its existence. It wasn't on any of the maps they could find, and even the forest rangers(护林员) didn't know about it. Lina loved that the island, hidden in a heavily-wooded side stream of the river, was a secret between the three friends -her, Celia, and Marie.
But now Lina was here alone, and it was night. Worse still, it was her own fault. “Come on, Lina, let Marie row the boat.” Celia had said. Marie was two years older than Lina, but she was a hopeless rower. That's why Lina refused and rowed the boat to the island. The argument that followed the refusal(拒绝) took the usual form. Celia took Marie's side, as she always did. Lina had exploded and yelled at them to just leave. So they got back in the boat and left.
A bolt of lightning crossed the darkened sky, accompanied by a deafening thunder clap. The storm was here. As the first cold raindrop slid down her neck, Lina's mind returned to her current(当前的) problem. She was stuck here by herself. She just hoped she didn't become as forgotten as the island. The thought of it sent a chill(寒意)down her back.
Suddenly, Lina spotted something in the water. It was a boat, and inside it were Marie, Celia, and Marie's dad, who was steering through the fast flowing waters. As the boat approached, they saw Lina waving and the worried expressions on their faces turned to relief.
In her excitement Lina jumped into the river. Only once she was in the icy water did she remember how fast the water was moving. Luckily a strong arm reached into the water and pulled her out. She smiled weakly at Marie's dad and, without a word, hugged Celia and Marie. They didn't seem to mind becoming wet.
24.What can be inferred about the island?
A. It is very near the ocean. B. It is a popular place for boating.
C. It is surrounded by thick forest. D. It has never been reached by others.
25.Why did Lina get angry?
A. Marie would not help row the boat. B. Lina was left alone on the island.
C. Marie didn't know how to row the boat. D. Celia supported Marie in the disagreement.
26.What caused Lina to feel a chill?
A. Her shame about the unnecessary argument. B. The first raindrops of the approaching storm. C. The idea that no one would come to save her.
D. The drop in temperature as the sun went down.
27.Who pulled Lina out of the water?
A. Marie's father. B. Lina herself. C. Marie. D. Celia.

Young Americans Are Less Wealthy Than Their Parents
The cost of living in the United States is going up, notes writer Alissa Quartz. As is reported in New York Post, Quartz points to “the costs of housing, education and health care in particular.” At the same time, a new study, the report of which is called “The Fading American Dream” found that half of Americans born in the 1980s are falling behind their parents economically.
These findings show that many younger adults are experiencing “downward mobility(流动).” In other words, they are not doing as well economically as their parents were at the same age. The idea of downward mobility is especially troubling for Americans, writes Robert Samuelson in The Washington Post. He says most U.S. citizens believe that, over time, the amount of money they earn will rise and life will get easier.
Alissa Quartz wrote a book about the financial difficulties of Americans. In the book, Quartz tells about teachers who are struggling to pay for regular costs. One high school teacher drives for ride sharing service Uber at night to earn more money. He corrects students’ papers between riders. A college professor turned to government assistance to feed her child and pay for a doctor. Quartz says even lawyers increasingly cannot earn an income that enables them to meet their needs. The problem of decreasing incomes in their field is made worse by debt they may have from law school.
Quartz and the economists who studied these issues say many things have led to lower incomes and downward mobility. The economic recession of 2007 to 2009 is partly to blame, they say. Modern technology also plays a part. Quartz says robots threaten to reduce the earnings of health care workers, reporters, and people who work at supermarkets, drug stores and tax preparation services. In The Washington Post, Robert Samuelson noted that poor schools, a weak housing industry and too many government rules are also to blame.
With all these things, and more, partly responsible, what is the solution? These experts say the answer is complex. But all point to one issue that needs to be examined: economic inequality. Quartz writes that while America is one of the richest countries in the world, it also has one of the biggest divides between the wealthy and the poor.
The researchers in “The Fading American Dream” study make a similar observation. They say raising GDP will not significantly improve the economic situation of most Americans. A higher GDP may help only those who are already doing well. Instead, the economists say, the United States could try to repeat something Americans born in the 1940s experienced. As those children grew up, they almost all benefited from a better economy.
28. The author mentions two reports in Paragraph 1 in order to .
A. explain the results of two researches B. introduce his own opinions about the issue
C. attract readers’ attention to health care D. lead to the topic of downward mobility
29. What’s the main idea of Paragraph 4?
A. The causes of downward mobility.
B. The influences of government rules.
C. The negative effects of modern technology.
D. The results of economic recession in America.
30. The author indicates in this passage that__________.
A. raising GDP will greatly help all the poor
B. American economy has a very bright future
C. young Americans will absolutely repeat their parents’ experience
D. it’s vital to narrow the gap between the rich and the poor
31. We can learn from the passage that in America, ___________.
A. people miss the good old days in the 1940s
B. people are suffering from a downward economy
C. people are unconcerned about future economy
D. people complain a lot about economic changes
C
Even as Google plans to test its fleet(车队) of self-driving cars on public roads this summer, its business model remains a bit of a mystery. By 2025, as many as 250,000 self-driving vehicles could be sold each year globally, according to a study by an industry research firm.
“Vehicles that can take anyone from A to B at the push of a button could transform mobility for millions of people,” said Chris Urmson, director of Google's self-driving car project. For now, Google has no plans to sell any of its self-driving cars. They are strictly for research. But they will hit public roads this summer near Google's headquarters in Mountain View, California. Previous testing has taken place only on closed courses.
The cars are built to operate without a steering wheel, accelerator(油门) or brake pedal. “Our software and sensors(传感器) do all the work,” Urmson said. “The vehicles will be very basic—we want to learn from them and adapt them as quickly as possible—but they will take you where you want to go at the push of a button.” The prototypes(雏形) are the first of a 100-car fleet the tech giant is building.
In the long run, Urmson sees a future of safer roads — the majority of auto accidents are caused by human error — and fewer traffic jams. Robotic cars could also shuttle(往返运送) people who can't drive because of age or illness.
Google has said that self-driving cars could launch new business models in which people buy the use of vehicles they don't own. The company has already tested other types of self-driving cars on public streets, including modified Lexus sport-utility vehicles, under a special permit program by the California Department of Motor Vehicles that requires a human driver at the controls.
The state has issued six other companies permits to operate such cars, including Delphi, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, Tesla, Bosch and Nissan. The vehicles that will be tested on open roads this summer will have removable steering wheels, accelerator and brake pedals to allow “safety drivers” to take control if needed.
Google says the cars are safe. The vehicles have sensors that “can detect objects out to a distance of more than two football fields in all directions, which is especially helpful on busy streets with lots of intersections,” Urmson said. “We're looking forward to learning how the community understands and interacts with the vehicles, and to uncovering challenges that are unique to a fully self-driving vehicle,” Urmson said.
32. The passage informs us that self-driving cars ________.
A. will probably decrease traffic jams
B. have never passed any necessary tests
C. have been purchased by some companies
D. will be able to communicate with drivers
33. According to Chris Urmson, ________.
A. software and sensors are vital for self-driving cars
B. self-driving cars can give driving orders to humans
C. self-driving cars are specially designed for the elderly
D. ordinary vehicles will be replaced by self-driving cars
34. The underlined word “intersections” in the last paragraph probably means ________.
A. accidents B. buildings C. crossings D. vehicles
35. What is the best title for this passage?
A. Self-driving Car Avoids Human Errors
B. Self-driving Car Meets No Challenges
C. Google's Self-driving Car Enjoys Global Popularity
D. Google's Self-driving Car Graduates to City Streets

How to Turn Your Goals into Habits
First we make our habits, then our habits make us. It’s such a simple concept, yet it’s something we don’t always do.
I believe that having ONE goal to focus on is much more powerful than having many goals. By putting the belief into practice, I have achieved a lot of personal goals over time. 36 . My answer takes a little explaining. I try to turn my goals into habits, and in doing so, I put my goals on autopilot. Turning a goal into a habit means really focusing on it for at least a month. The more you can focus, the more it'll be on autopilot. 37 . You’ll still do it, but you only have to use minimal force to maintain it, and you can focus on your next goal or habit.
Take my marathon goal as an example. I was just starting running and had the brilliant idea to run a marathon within a year. So that was my goal. 38 . First, I had to make running a daily habit. Second, I had to report to people in order to have accountability (负责) so that I could not quit easily. I focused on the daily running habit for about a month, and didn’t have any other goals or habits. When the running habit stuck, I started reporting to people I knew and blogging about my running every day.
39 . I could focus on new goals without having to worry about the marathon. I still had to do the running, of course, but it didn’t require constant focus. 40 . I was able to achieve this because, all year long, I had daily running and accountability habits. I put my marathon goal into autopilot, so instead of struggling with it daily for an entire year, I focused on it for one month and was able to accomplish it while focusing on new habits and goals.
A. And eventually, I ran the first marathon in my life
B. At the beginning, it was very difficult for me to achieve this goal
C. But in order to achieve it, I broke it down into two habits
D. With this accountability, there’s no way I could stop running
E. Once you put it on autopilot, you don't have to focus on it much
F. My readers asked me how I was able to achieve them while working on different projects
G.. Once those two habits were established, my marathon goal was pretty much on autopilot
