I have recently begun my year abroad working as an English language teacher in Italy and for my first lesson I was asked to prepare a speech about my life in the UK.Then the students asked me questions to find out more and many of them asked, “Do you play any sports?”,to which I replied, “Yes, I play netball.” Each time, they were astounded as none of the students had heard of netball!
Netball is very popular in the UK, Australia and New Zealand. It is a team sport which is similar to both basketball and handball. There are seven players on each team.Players must throw the ball to one another and the goal of the game is to pass the ball to the “Goal Shooter” who can throw the ball into the net to score a goal. However, the key parts of netball are that you cannot bounce(使……弹跳) the ball and you cannot move your feet when you have the ball. This is called the footwork rule and it can be quite difficult to learn for young children playing the game! A full match lasts for one hour and in a single match often about 100 goals are scored, which shows what a fast-paced and exciting game netball is!
Netball is usually played by women and girls. However, at many universities, there are mixed netball leagues in which teams must have both men and women players. In the UK, there are many different ways of trying to encourage people to play netball. One such way is called “Back to Netball”,which encourages women who have not played netball since they were at school to rediscover their love for the sport! Walking netball is another form of the sport aimed at older women and those who want to exercise in a gentler way.So, why not watch a video of netball online and then have a go for yourself?

Walking across the stage at graduation was more than just a personal achievement for Cody Sullivan, 22, as he became Oregon’s first student with Down syndrome(唐氏综合征) to complete four years of college.
Cody’s mom, Ann Donaca-Sullivan, said that as he and all his friends were graduating from high school, he kept asking her, “Which college can I go to?” After realizing there weren’t any higher education programs for people with intellectual disabilities(智力缺陷) in the state, Donaca-Sullivan worked with Concordia University to make sure her son would get the college education that he wanted so much.
On his first day of college, Cody fit in with others.“Everyone likes studying together with Cody,” Eastley, 27, told InsideEdition.com.
Eastley explained that on his first day of college, he was surprised when he kept hearing “Cody” being called across the restaurant.“I see Cody is in the center of attention and I came up to him and told him my name was Cody Eastley,” he said.“That’s how we became friends.”
Sullivan has even become a guide to other students who want to find their way.“I met him two years ago — he was my baseball coach,” said Matt Schweitz, one of Sullivan’s friends.“He has been a part of all the sports teams, so I think that’s how a lot of people meet him.”

A recent study followed nearly 1,500 old people for 10 years. It found that those who had a large network of friends lived longer than those with fewer friends by more than 20%.This study isn’t the only one that shows friendships can be good for our health.
Lots of research has shown social support and good health are connected. One recent study focuses on people with ovarian cancer. It says those with lots of social support had much lower levels of a protein connected to more dangerous cancers. This made their treatments(治疗) work better. In another study, women with breast cancer in a support group lived twice as long as those not in a support group. They also had much less pain.
Sheldon Cohen, a professor at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, says strong social support helps people deal with stress.“There may be more benefits as well,” Cohen says.“Friends encourage you to look after yourself better. And people with more friends have higher self-confidence, so they feel they have more control over their lives.”
Other studies show people with fewer friends are likely to die sooner after having a heart attack, compared with people having a strong social network.Having lots of friends may even lower your chance of catching a cold.“People with social support have fewer immune(免疫的) problems and lower levels of stress,” says Tasha Howe, who works at Humboldt State University.“We are social animals, and we were born to be in groups,” Howe says.“We have always needed others to survive better. It’s in our genes.People with a big social group are likely to be more at peace, which leads to better health.”

There may be something in your food that you cannot see and cannot taste. But it could be killing you.It is an artificial(人造的) oil commonly called trans fat.Trans fat has been added to our food supply and causes more than 500,000 deaths every year.
The World Health Organization(WHO) has decided to develop a plan to help countries remove(去除) trans fat from the world’s food supply within the next five years.Artificial trans fat is made by adding hydrogen to vegetable oil.Food makers use this low-priced oil to make food stay fresh longer.
Trans fat can be found in food such as cakes, cookies and deep-fried food.Studies have found that trans fat increases the risk of heart disease.
Frieden, head of the public health organization Resolve to Save Lives, said the move was unprecedented(空前的).
“The WHO has taken action to remove diseases that are communicated like polio or small pox, but this is the first time that the WHO has had a plan to make the risk of a disease that is communicated fall. This is an unprecedented move. And it’s really important that government and communities around the world change artificial trans fat for healthier oils,” said Frieden.
Some countries have been preventing trans fat from being used because of its connection with heart disease.Denmark has stopped trans fat from being used in their food many years ago.In the U.S., the Food and Drug Administration(FDA) has called for food makers to stop using it.
The World Health Organization is asking governments of other countries to do the same.Where trans fat hasn’t been used, heart attacks and deaths from heart disease have dropped greatly.
The WHO plan calls on governments to take some steps. They include changing trans fat for healthier oils such as olive oil, letting the public realize trans fat can damage one’s health, and carrying out anti-trans fat laws.
If people stop eating products made with trans fat, more than 17 million lives could be saved over the next 25 years. Also a major source of heart disease will be removed.

Just like humans, dogs can get overweight. You might think your fat friend is so cute, but in fact, you’re really harming your dog by allowing it to be overweight. If your dog is overweight, it will have difficulty living a healthy and long life because it may suffer from illness like heart disease.
Your dog became overweight because you fed them with too much food.Unlike humans, dogs will eat until they burst. When dogs don’t always know where their next meal is coming from, their natural instinct(本能) is to eat everything that they can find in case they cannot find food again later. In this way, they are unlike cats because cats will control their intake of food and stop eating when they’re no longer hungry.Besides, if you are not walking or exercising your dog, there is a good chance that they’ll gain more weight than necessary.
What can you do for your overweight dog? First, be sure that your dog gets exercise every day.For example, play games in the yard, or take your dog for runs or long walks. These activities add up to lots of fat burning, and they’re good for you, too.Second, stop giving your dog treats. We often don’t think much of treating our dogs, but that can really be the most important cause of the_problem.If you must give your dog treats, do try healthier foods like carrots.
Finally, be sure to measure(测量) your dog’s meals exactly by using a measuring cup. You’ll need to know exactly what your dog is eating every day to make sure that the portions(份量) are becoming smaller and smaller.

Chocolate is good for your heart, skin and brain.Usually, people think that chocolate is bad for their health. They describe chocolate as“something to die for”or say“death by chocolate”.Now they should bite_their_tongues! Evidence is showing that some kinds of chocolate are actually good for you in the following ways:
A happier heart
Scientists at Harvard University recently examined 136 studies on cocoa—the main ingredient in chocolate and found that it does seem to strengthen the heart.Studies have shown heart benefits from increased blood flow. These benefits are the result of cocoa’s chemicals, which seem to prevent both cell damage and inflammation(炎症).
Better blood pressure
If yours is high, chocolate may help.Jeffrey Blumberg from Tufts University recently found that people with high blood pressure who ate 3.5 ounces of dark chocolate per day for two weeks saw their blood pressure drop quickly.

Although I had wanted to quit smoking, I never made up my mind until New Year’s Day last year.I was having a terrible headache.I knew it was time to quit.
Searching for methods to quit smoking on the Internet is like searching for weight loss tips—there are thousands of different ways that are said to be the best, but not all are right for you.One approach that did draw my interest was apps.Along with cigarettes(烟), my phone was the only other thing I couldn’t leave my apartment without.
There are hundreds of apps for quitting smoking.I downloaded an app called QuitIt because it was said to be good.It was free and didn’t cost much time as some others. You input the amount of cigarettes you smoke, the cost per pack and the time you decide to quit smoking. The app does the maths and then gives you information based on the information given by you.It tracks the amount of time since you decided to quit, the money you’ve saved, and the danger you’ve avoided. The app also includes a number of health goals.
Quitting smoking was one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do.Like most stories of quitting, I did get a little sick and I felt terrible, but the most difficult part was the empty feeling I was left with.Any time I felt like a cigarette, I would open the app and track the progress I had made.If I wanted to smoke while I was on the computer, I’d immediately go to stopsmoking to read a success story, or to offer support to someone else having a harder time than me.
I quit smoking 1 year 2 months and 27 days ago.I did not smoke 6, 771 cigarettes and saved $4, 062.84.

Physical education, or gym class, isn’t required for all high school students. In some schools, it isn’t offered for some different reasons. But should high school students have physical education? The answer is certainly “Yes”.
Today many people don’t do sports. But as is known to all, doing sports is very important for an adult.Teaching teens the importance of a healthy lifestyle and making fitness plans now can help teens put exercise in the first place as an adult.
High school isn’t that easy. Many students are under a lot of stress.Stress can be harmful to a student’s studies and life.Doing sports can help them deal with stress better, helping them live a happier life at school.
The American Heart Association says that 10 million kids and teens suffer from obesity(肥胖症).Teens should get 60 minutes of physical activity per day to control their weight and to help their bones get stronger. The increase in activities that don’t get teens to move around, such as video games and computer activities, means many teens don’t get their required exercise.Physical education classes act as a public health measure to encourage activity and help teens have healthy weights.
Inactivity increases teens’risk of developing many diseases. An active lifestyle offers a good way of protection from these health problems. As much as 75 percent of health-care spending goes toward treating medical conditions that can be hindered by lifestyle changes, according to the American College of Sports Medicine.
According to the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition(PCFSN), students who performed five hours of physical activity each week improved their academic(学业的) performance.Students from programs with no physical activity, who used the extra time for classroom study, did not perform better on tests than those who gave up some study time in support of physical education.

Bats(蝙蝠) can fly a great distance, but they also have another ability. Many bats live a very long time, which makes some scientists surprised.
European researchers are studying bats to understand why they can live so long. They hope to make discoveries aimed at fighting the aging process in human beings.
The group studied bat chromosomes(染色体), a line of genes found in the nucleus of cells. The scientists were most interested in structures connected to the ends of the chromosomes. They are called telomeres(端粒).Telomeres protect the ends of chromosomes, which shorten each time a cell divides.Scientists believe this shortening process causes cells to break down. They say this is what causes aging.
A report on bats was published recently in the journal Science Advances.Emma Teeling is the leader of the study. She said that studying bats enables scientists to learn more about the processes that drive healthy aging.
The European researchers studied 493 bats from four bat species. The group used information that had been gathered over more than 60 years.Of these animals, the greater mouse-eared bat generally lived the longest, an average of 37 years.
The scientists said this and a related species, which are grouped together under the name Myotis, had telomeres that did not shorten with age.Another Myotis bat holds the record for the oldest age, reaching 41 years.
The scientists’ findings suggest that these bats’ cells have the ability to keep and repair their telomeres. This, they said, helps protect against the aging process.
Based on its body size, a bat like the greater mouse-eared bat would be expected to live four years. However, they have been found to live nearly 10 times longer than that.
The scientists found that only 19 species of mammals live longer than humans when their body size is considered.Eighteen of these are bats.

第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Many years earlier, my_mother knew that she could not send me to college and pay for it.She worked in a retail store and made just enough to pay the bills and take care of the other children at home.If I wanted to go to college, it was up to me to find out how to get there.
I found that I qualified for some grants because of the size of our family, my mom’s income and my SAT scores. There was enough to cover school and books, but not enough for room and board.I accepted a job as part of a work-study_program.While not attractive, it was one I could do.I washed dishes in the school cafeteria.
Just when I thought I was going to drop out of my college career, an angel appeared.Well, one of those that are on earth, without wings.“I heard that you need some help,”he said.“What do you mean?”I asked, trying to figure_out which area of my life he meant.“Financially, to stay in school.”“Well, I make it okay.I just have trouble working all these hours and finding no time to study.”“Well, I think I have a way to help you out.”
He went on to explain that his grandparents needed help on the weekends. All that was required of me was cooking meals and helping them get in and out of bed in the morning and evening. The job paid four hundred dollars a month, twice the money I was making washing_dishes.Now I would have time to study.I went to meet his grandparents and accepted the job.
My first discovery was his grandmother’s great love of music. She spent hours playing her old, off-key piano. One day, she told me I didn’t have enough fun in my life and took it upon herself to teach me the art.Grandma was impressed with my ability and encouraged me to continue.Weekends in their house became more than just books and cooking, they were filled with the wonderful sounds of the out-of-tune piano and two very out-of-tune singers.
注意:1.所续写短文的词数应为150左右;
2.至少使用5个短文中标有下划线的关键词语;

Paragraph 1:
When Christmas break came, Grandma got a chest cold, and I was afraid to leave her.I hadn’t been home since Labor Day, and my mother was anxious to see me.I agreed to come home, but for two weeks instead of four, so I could return to see Grandma and Grandpa.I said my good-byes, arranged for their temporary care and returned home.As I was loading my car to go back to school, the phone rang.“Grandma died last night.I’m sorry.”I hung up the phone feeling like my world had ended.I had lost my friend, and that was far worse than knowing I would have to return to washing_dishes.I went back at the end of four weeks, asking to begin the work-study_program again. The financial aid advisor looked at me as if I had lost my mind.I explained my position, then he smiled and slid me an envelope.“This is for you,”he said.
Paragraph 2:
The envelope was from Grandma. She had known how sick she was.In the envelope was enough money to pay for the rest of my college year and a request that I take piano lessons in her memory.Moved to tears, I determined to learn piano lessons by heart and my memory of grandma motivated me to practice day and night. Now, years later, when I walk by a piano, I smile and think of Grandma. She is playing the piano smilingly in heaven, I am sure.
