I. Useful words and expressions
1. This person makes sick people better.
make sick people better 让生病的人好起来。
better在本句中是well(健康的)的比较级。
sick people 病人,区别于ill people 品德败坏的人。
2. This person puts out fires.
put out fires 灭火
3. This person cooks food for people.
cook food for people 为人们煮饭烧菜。
cook既可以作动词(烧煮),课可以作名词(厨师),而cooker解释为炊具,蒸煮器。
4. I’d like to be a policeman because I want to make our city a safe place.
make our city a safe place 使我们的城市成为一个安全的地方。
5. Kitty is interviewing Samuel Han. She wants to find out if he likes his job.
Kitty正在采访Samuel Han。她想要弄清他是否喜欢他的工作。

would like 意为“想要;原意”,是用以提问或谈话间有礼貌的表达方式。
would的缩写形式是’d,e.g., I’d like to meet her.
一般疑问句中,would 提到句首,e.g., Would you like a cup of tea?
肯定回答:Yes, I would. 否定回答:No, I wouldn’t.
否定句中,would改为其否定形式wouldn’t,e.g., I wouldn’t like to be a cook.
would like to do sth. 相当于want to do sth.
e.g., I would like to be a cook. = I want to be a cook.
Why … ? 用于对原因的提问,答句中要使用B cause。
Why not? 为什么不?在本文中是对“为什么你不想成为一名厨师”的简略提问。

How can you practise to become a good actor?
Would you like to become a TV or a movie star? Or act on the stage? Here are some things to do right now. They will help you think about skills you will need for acting.
1. Look at yourself in the mirror. Do you stand up tall and straight? If you don’t, practise walking with a book on your head.
2. Make faces at yourself. Look happy, sad or angry. Use your mouth, eyebrows and every part of your face.
3. Talk to yourself. Repeat words, saying them as clearly as possible. Then learn a poem and repeat it.
4. Pretend(假装) you are talking to someone. Have a quarrel, or ask someone for a favour.
5. Take a walk, pretending to be different people. Be an old man going up a steep hill, or a young child skipping happily.
6. Tell a story and act it out.
Two last hints: Use every part of your body when you act, and believe you really are the person you are pretending to be.
