I. Useful words and expressions
1. Bread tastes nice with jam.
2. Let’s buy some bread and a bottle of jam.
a bottle of jam
a packet of nuts
3. – Have you got enough money?
– I’ve got twenty-one yuan.
I’ve 是I have 的缩写形式。
have/has got sth.
4. How much money do you need from Mr Li?
need sth. from sb.
5. Here you are.
Here it is.
Here they are.
II. Word study
salt n. 盐
→ salty adj. 咸的
spice n. 辣
→ spicy adj. 辣的
chilli n.
→ chillies n.
taste v.
→ tasty adj. 美味的
fun n.
→ funny adj.
III. Language explanation
1. Let’s have a picnic tomorrow.
Shall we have a picnic?
How about having a picnic? = What about having a picnic?
2. Shall we buy some soft drinks?
shall表示此含义时,后面通常只跟第一人称的代词,e.g., Shall we/I …?
That’s a good idea.
这里用some是因为Shall we …
3. – Why do you like oranges?
– I like them because they’re sweet.
4. – Why not?
– They’re too spicy?
5. May I have some chicken wings, please?
6. Would you like some cola, Kitty and Peter?
Would you like some … ?

Different Eating Customs
The ways people eat are really different between western and eastern countries. The reason for that is the different dining tools and menus.
Easterners use chopsticks, or sometimes even grasp rice straightly with hands as Indians do. The thin and long chopsticks can’t be used to cut food, so we usually use our teeth to act as knives. We hold our food, meat or vegetables with the chopsticks. That’s the usual way we eat. We are also used to(习惯于) hold up our bowls when we are having rice or soup. Japanese hold bowls to have miso(日本豆面酱) soup without spoons. But all those habits are rude in western countries.
In the West, when you are eating, bowls and plates can’t leave the tables. Food should be cut by knives. Of course your mouth can’t touch the plates and bowls. So the regular process(程序) is like that. You cut the meat on the plate with fork and knife, send the meat cube into your mouth with fork and nothing will be returned back but the fork alone.
Read and decide True (T) or False (F).
( ) 1. The ways people eat are the same between western and eastern countries.
( ) 2. Indians use their hands to grasp rice straightly.
( ) 3. Easterners use teeth to cut food.
( ) 4. In the West, you can cut food with teeth.
