The Chinese New Year is also called Spring Festival because it starts from the beginning of spring. But the origin is not like the name but of a monster beast. The beast was called ‘Nian’. It means ‘year’ in English. It had a very big mouth and ate a lot of people with one bite. People were very afraid. Later, an old man told people to put up red paper decorations on their windows and doors at the end of every year to make it away because Nian was afraid of the colour of red. Tet Trung Thu
This Vietnamese festival falls on the fifteenth of the eight month of the Chinese lunar year. It celebrates the full moon around September or October, a time whn the moon is at its fullest and most beautiful time. This festival has a history of hundreds of years.
People wait for the full moon so that the festival can begin. There is a special meal, including moon cakes, either sweet or salty.
Tet Trung Thu is also celebrated as Children’s Day in Vietnam. Children carry lighted lanterns in the streets. The lanterns come in all shapes and sizes. Some are shaped as full moons, others are like birds, fish, butterflies, or planes.

The Lantern Festival
The Lantern Festival is on the 15th day of the 1st lunar month. It is the end of the Chinese New Year, always 15 days after the Chinese New Year’s Day.
On the Lantern Festival, there are lantern shows and lion dances everywhere. One kind of food is the Tangyuan, it is another kind of dumplings made of sweet rice rolled into balls and stuffed with sweet or salty fillings.

Qu Yuan, Rice Dumplings and Dragon Boat Races
On the fifth day of the fifth lunar month every year, people in most places of China eat rice dumplings and have dragon boat races, to remember Qu Yuan. There is an interesting story:
One day after Qu Yuan had jumped and died in the Miluo River, many people in his hometown saw him coming back in their dreams. Wearing his usual clothes, he looked as dignified as in his lifetime. The excited villagers ran to meet him. ‘Thank you very much,’ Qu Yuan said, smiling. ‘My people haven’t forgotten me, so I can live in the other world without regret.’ The farmers found him in poor health. So they asked, ‘Sir, did you enjoy the rice we sent you?’ ‘Thank you,’ he replied. ‘But it was all eaten by the fish and prawns.’ They asked how the rice could be saved for Qu Yuan himself. He told the farmers to wrap the rice in bamboo leaves and make them just like water chestnuts to frighten away the fish and prawns.
The villagers tried this way on the Double Fifth the following year, throwing the wrapped rice dumplings into the river. Before long, however, Qu Yuan told them in their dreams, ‘I ate many of the rice dumplings you gave me, but quite a few were eaten by the fish and prawns as before.’ When asked what should be done to prevent this, he said, ‘You can drop the rice dumplings from a dragon-shaped boat while sounding bugles and drums. This would make the water animals think that the dumplings are for the Dragon King, who is the ruler of the water world. They would not take them.’
So the custom of eating dumplings and holding dragon boat races on the Double Fifth spread to more and more places and now it has become a nationwide festival.
If you visit places where Chinese live, you will see such dragon boat races. In some places, there are boat performances in the streets. Such places out of mainland China which we know are: Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan, New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Vancouver, etc.
A villager in Qu Yuan’s hometown had the following strange dreams. Complete the dialogues between him and Qu Yuan in his dreams.
