Mr Hu took his students to the SPCA and they met an officer there. He told them that the SPCA means the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
The officer found the dog and her puppies in the street. Someone left them there. When he saw them, they had no food or water. They felt hungry and thirsty. So he took them back to the SPCA.
People can keep animals as their pets from the SPCA. The children think the puppies are lovely. Jill prefers the black one. Peter prefers the yellow and brown one and Joe likes the white one.

The SPCA also helps animals find new homes. If people want a pet, they can go to the SPCA. However, they must promise to take care of their new pet.
There are clinics for sick animals in the SPCA. The vets in the clinics take care of them.
