Teaching Objectives:
By the end of this period, students will be able to
1. identify the meanings of some words and expressions (get to, each other, family name, given name, country, nationality, British, Australian, telephone number, e-mail address, etc.)
2. use the sentence patterns to talk about names, countries, nationalities, telephone numbers and e-mail addresses.
3. get to know each other and know some Western culture and customs.

I. Pre-task activities
Step 1
Greet the students and ask them to do quick response.
Respond to the teacher using the sentence patterns they’ve learnt in U1L1.
To review the
sentence patterns of greetings and lead students into the topic “Getting to Know Each Other”
II.
While-task procedures
Step 1
Show pictures of the characters from the text
book and talk about names.
Look at the pictures and tell the family/last names and
given/first names.
To learn new words “family/last name, given/ first name”.
Step 2
Read the dialogues in Tuning In and ask students to repeat and act out.
Read the dialogues after the teacher, work in pairs and act out according to the true information.
To practise the sentence patterns of names.
Step 3
Show national flags of six countries. Read the countries and correct the mistakes of pronunciation. And then play a game.
Match the flags with the countries
and tell the
nationalities. Play a game: Which
flag is missing?
To broaden
students’ mind and arouse their interest in learning new words of countries and nationalities.
Step 4
Show a table of names, countries and nationalities with some words missing. Then check the answer.
Fill in the blanks with countries and
nationalities.
To go over some words and enrich their vocabulary.

Give a model and ask students to make up
conversations according to the table.

Play a game: Don’t touch the bomb!
Read the words quickly on the
screen and avoid the bomb. If someone touches the bomb, throw him a bomb.
To arouse students’ interest and consolidate the new words.

Post-task activities
Step 1
Show a table of Tuning In Ex.2 and ask: What will people ask and talk about when they meet for the first time?
Read the words and tick what people will ask and talk about for the first time.
To know some Western culture and customs.
Step 2
Play another game: Show pictures of different
mooncakes and ask students to choose one.
Choose one kind of mooncakes and tell the sentence patterns behind them.
To arouse students’ interest and put the key words and sentence patterns into practice and get to know each other.
