One-point-two million international students attended American colleges and universities in 2018. That is an increase of 6.5 percent from the year before and the highest number ever. But the steady growth in the number of international students may not last. Applications from foreign students for the next school year are down.
A new report by the American Association of College Registrars and Admissions Officers says four out of 10 U.S. colleges reported fewer international applications. The number of undergraduate applications from countries in the Middle East fell by 39 percent. Michael Reilly said there may be fewer applicants because some people see America “becoming less welcoming of international students.” Reilly said colleges are telling students “their studies or travels will not be disrupted by future policy changes,” but it doesn’t help.
Wim Wiewel, president of Portland State University, said his school saw a 37 percent reduction in applications from India for the new school year. Most of the decrease, he said, is because of recent monetary(货币) changes in India. Those changes have some parents worried they might not be able to afford the cost of an American college education. But he said some parents also worry about their children’s safety after several recent attacks on Indian immigrants(移民) in the U.S. In the worst attack, two engineers from India were shot last month at a bar in the state of Kansas. The attacker told the two men they are not welcome in America, police said.
Twenty-two-year-old Mahamadou Sissoko is from Mali in West Africa. He is finishing his senior year at Portland State University. Sissoko said his experiences at Portland State have been mostly good -- after a difficult start as he worked to improve his English skills. He said the “anti-immigrant” message he hears from the president and others worries him. As Sissoko sees it, he and other international students benefit by learning about American culture. But, he said, they help American students learn about their countries’ cultures. “Some American students can’t or don’t want to travel outside the U.S.,” Sissoko said. “They don’t have to. We are coming to them. And they can get to know us.” As a Muslim, he said Portland State gives him a chance to practice his religion. “It isn’t perfect,” he said. Prayers are held in a room that is below a room used for musical performances. “It is supposed to be a silent place.”
58. Which of the following is NOT the reason for the decreased applications?
A. Religious convenience. B. Governmental policies.
C. Security concerns. D. Economic factors.
59. The underlined word “disrupted” in Paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to “_________”.
A. protect B. interrupt C. continue D. prevent
60. What is the benefit of accepting International students for America?
A. American students can make profits from their culture.
B. American students know about other countries’ cultures.
C. American students can save money from travelling outside.
D. American students learn how to develop economy for their country.

Every weekday, shortly after 11 a.m., a line forms at the Broadway and 38th Street location of Sweetgreen, the eco-conscious salad chain. By noon, the line has usually tripled(三倍) in size.
The scene is similar at the Chop’t, or the Dig Inn, or the Just Salad one block south. Greens, once so unattractive that parents all over the country had to beg their children to eat them, have never been hotter.
At Sweetgreen, the appeal is partly ethical. The ingredients(成分) are sustainably farmed, sourced from trusted partners and served with transparency(透明). There are vegetarian, gluten-free and “warm bowl” options. There are raw beets and organic carrots. It’s enough to make the most wasteful among us feel satisfied. Is it any wonder that Sweetgreen is the fastest growing salad chain in the United States?
The moral overtones extend even to the trash. As customers pay and head back toward their various workplaces, they pass an often overflowing garbage bin with a proud sign above it that says that all of the company’s utensils, napkins, bowls and cups are plant-based, “which means they go in the compost(分类) bin, along with any leftover food.” “Nothing from inside Sweetgreen goes to the landfill(垃圾填埋),” the sign declares further, virtuously.
But that’s far from the truth, although it’s not the chain’s fault.
Zara Watson, a lawyer who eats at Sweetgreen three times a week, throws the waste from her healthful lunch directly in the trash because she does not have to compost at her office. So does Sam Hockley, the managing director at the software company Meltwater, who is willing to eat a Sweetgreen bowl for breakfast, lunch or dinner.
Salad is appealing not only because the food is healthy for us but because it’s healthy for the world. But even as Sweetgreen and its marvelous effort, the compostable containers the chain puts such care into providing are, more often than not, going to a landfill.
Eric Goldstein, the New York City environment director, said that it typically takes a city about a decade to transition to successful composting. Now New York faces several challenges, one of which is educating people on how to compost in the first place. “If you were to stop a person in the street, I don’t know how many people could even tell you what composting really is,” he said. “We need a large-scale program to let New Yorkers know why this is important and how to participate in the program.”
And of course, composting itself is not the gold standard of eco-conscious lunch disposal. “it’s still best to use reusable things, even before composting and recycling,” Mr. Goldstein said. “But composting is an extremely valuable thing to do.”
61. The reasons why Sweetgreen is so popular include _____.
① the products it offers are attractive to children
② the ingredients it uses are safe and reliable
③ the products it offers meet the needs of different customers
④ there is a growing trend toward eating greens
A. ①②③ B. ①②④ C. ①③④ D. ②③④
62. Which of the following statements is true according to the sign above the garbage bin at Sweetgreen?
A. The tableware that Sweetgreen uses is environment-friendly.
B. The containers that Sweetgreen uses are reusable.
C. The leftover food from the shop will be sent to landfill.
D. The shop encourages customers not to waste food.
63. Why does Zara throw the waste in the trash after eating Sweetgreen’s salads?
A. Because the material Sweetgreen uses isn’t compostable.
B. Because she thinks it is wrong to compost waste.
C. Because composting is unnecessary where she works.
D. Because she is unwilling to walk to the compost bin.
64. What can we learn from Eric Goldstein’s words?
A. The transition to successful composting in New York is a tough task.
B. The biggest challenge in composting is the objection from customers.
C. Most Americans have realized the necessity of composting.
D. The best way to deal with leftover food is to turn it into compost.
D
When I was a young girl living in Ireland, I was always pleased when it rained, because that meant I could go treasure hunting. What’s the connection between a wet day and a search for buried treasure? Well, it’s quite simple. Ireland, as some of you may already know, is the home of Leprechauns -- little men who possess magic powers and, perhaps pots of gold.
Now, although Leprechauns are interesting characters, I have to admit that I was more interested in the story of their treasure hoard(藏宝屋). This, as all of Ireland knows, they hide at the end of the rainbow. Leprechauns can be frightening people but if you can discover the end of the rainbow, they have to unwillingly surrender their gold to you. So whenever it rained, I would look up in the sky and follow the curve of the rainbow to see where it ended. I never did unearth any treasure, but I did spend many happy days dreaming of what I could do with the fortune if I found it.
As I got older, and started working, rainy days came to be just another trouble and my childhood dreams of finding treasure faded. But for some people the dream of striking it lucky never fades, and for a fortunate few, the dream even comes true! Such is the case of Mel Fisher. His dream of finding treasure also began in childhood, while reading the great literature classics “Treasure Island” and “Moby Dick”. However, unlike myself, he chased his dream and in the end managed to become one of the most famous professional treasure hunters of all time. In 1985, he fished up(打捞出) the priceless cargo of the sunken Spanish galleon(船) Atocha, which earned him an incredible $400 million dollars!
After the ship sank in 1622 off the coast of Florida, its murky waters became a treasure of precious stones, gold bars and silver coins. Mel Fisher, who ran a commercial saving operation, had been trying to locate the underwater treasure for over 16 years when he finally hit the jackpot! His dreams had come true but finding and keeping the treasure wasn’t all plain sailing. After battling with hostile conditions at sea, Fisher then had to battle in the courts. In fact, the State of Florida took Fisher to court over ownership of the find and the Federal government soon followed suit. After more than 200 hearings, Fisher agreed to donate 20% of his yearly findings for public display, and so now there is a museum in Florida which displays hundreds of the objects which were saved from the Atocha.
This true story seems like a modern-day fairytale: a man pursues his dream through hardship and in the end, he successes over the difficulties --- they all live happily ever after, right? Well, not exactly. Archaeologists object to the fact that with commercial saving operations like Fisher’s, the objects are sold and dispersed(失落的) and UNESCO are worried about protecting our underwater heritage from what it describes as “robbery”.
The counter-argument is that in professional, well-run operations such as Fisher’s, each piece is accurately and minutely recorded and that it is this information which is more important than the actual artefact, and that such operations help increase our wealth of archaeological knowledge. Indeed, as in Fisher’s case, they make history more accessible to people through museum donations and information on web sites.
Whether these treasure hunters are saving or robbing our underwater heritage may not be clear, but what is clear is that treasure hunting is not just innocent child’s play anymore but profitable big business. I have learnt that the end of the rainbow is beyond my reach, but in consolation(安慰), with just a click of the mouse, I too can have a share in the riches that the Atocha has revealed. As Friedrich Nietzsche so wisely said: “Our treasure lies in the beehive of our knowledge.”
65. Why did the author like the rainy days when she was young?
A. Because she was engaged in treasure hunting.
B. Because she dreamt of possessing magic powers.
C. Because she was fascinated in the Leprechaun story.
D. Because she wanted to enjoy the end of the rainbow.
66. What does the underlined “this” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A. The Leprechaun. B. The treasure hoard.
C. The treasure story. D. The treasure dream.
67. Which is NOT the difficulty Fisher met?
A. fishing up the priceless cargo of the sunken Atocha
B. being accused over the ownership of the treasure
C. being taken to court by the Federal government
D. donating 20% of his yearly findings for public display
68. According to Paras. 5 and 6, about commercial saving operations, __________.
A. actions should be taken to stop the robbery behaviors
B. attention should be paid to the finding’s educational value
C. UNESCO’s view is different from archaeologists’
D. people hold entirely different views on the issue
69. How did the author feel about the treasure from the Atocha?
A. She was glad that people can have a chance to see the treasure.
B. She was sad that she was unable to discover and save treasure.
C. She was angry that treasure hunters were damaging heritage.
D. She was unconcerned about where the treasure came from.
70. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. The author will use her knowledge to investigate the distinction.
B. The author will learn more knowledge about treasure hunting.
C. The author will start her own big business with her computer knowledge.
D. The author will try her best to enrich her knowledge to realize her dream.
No matter what kind of job you have, you will, at some point, have to respond to an e-mail. A study on emails found that several factors affect whether or not you get a reply to your email.
The company Boomerang did the study. One of Boomerang’s goals is to help companies be more productive. One of its main products is a smartphone app that helps companies manage all of the emails they get each day. They found that many factors affect your email response rate.
Remember the subject line
The subject line is what people will see first. Boomerang says that subject lines with three to four words are the best for getting a response. The response rate goes down, they found, with each word you add. So, remember when writing your subject line --- less is more.
Write simply
The reading level of the language you use in your emails is important. Boomerang found that a third-grade level works best and gets the most responses. So, use simple words in simple sentences. Do not use complex words when simple ones will work just fine.
Keep it short. But not too short!
Boomerang found that the “sweet spot for email length is between 50 and 125 words.” Experts say the response rate for emails of this length is above 50 percent. But, do not write all 125 words into one long paragraph. Break them up into a couple short paragraphs. It is much easier to read this way. The brain and the eyes like to see “negative” spaces.
Ask a question
Now, remember. You are trying to get a response to your email. So, a good way to do that is to ask the reader a question. It gives them something to do. Boomerang found that the emails that asked no questions had the lowest response rate. Emails that ask between one to three questions are “50 percent more likely to get a response than emails asking no questions.” However, don’t ask too many questions. With each extra question you ask in your email, your response rate drops.
Show some feeling. But not too much.
The tone of your email matters very much. The tone is the feeling, or attitude expressed by the words that someone uses in speaking or writing. When writing an email, be positive (but not too positive) or negative (but not too negative.) Being neutral --- neither positive nor negative --- gets you nowhere.
So, if you really want a response to an email, remember these writing tips. And remember that usually, less will get you more.

第五部分: 书面表达(满分25分)
请阅读下面短文,并按照要求用英语写一篇150词左右的文章。
Artificial intelligence is taking over many human jobs. For instance, planes are being flown much of the time by automatic pilots. And the complex problem of controlling air traffic around large modern airports is also achieved by artificial intelligence that operates well beyond the capability of mere human air traffic controllers.
As machines get smarter, they will do more of our thinking for us and make life easier. At that point, our long struggle with challenging technologies is at an end. We can take it easy knowing that the hard work of planning and organizing is being done by a better brain --- the electronic assistant.
Usually changing technology stimulates the brain and increases intelligence. But that may only be true if technology challenges but not replaces us. In a world mostly run by intelligent machines, our lives could get a lot simpler. Would that make us less intelligent?

五、书面表达
Nowadays, many aspects of our life have undergone considerable changes thanks to artificial intelligence. However, when people enjoy the benefits and convenience, they also worry whether our brain will become lazy.
In my opinion, artificial intelligence will enable our brains to get more creative. With intelligent machines, people can expand their creative energy and bring about innovations. Simply speaking, when people are free from repetitive, sometimes even dangerous work, work efficiency will undoubtedly be improved. As a result, people can spare more time to do what they want and pursue what they dream of. Moreover, creativity originates from knowledge and thinking. Once people have the opportunities to do more thinking and learning, their intelligence would be enhanced rather than weakened.
Artificial intelligence is like a double-edged sword. The sensible choice is to embrace its advantages and cope with the problems. This is what an advanced and rational society should be like.
