The idea of Christmas with the royal(王室的)family may make people think of images of all the royals gathered around the tree with mountains of presents on the morning of December 25, but it turns out that their holiday is structured in a different way than you might expect. According to their official website, the royal family hold their gift-giving celebrations on December 24 by putting their gifts on tables and opening them after teatime.
According to the Mirror, name tags (名签)indicating each member of the family are placed on the white tables in the house’s red living room. The royal family’s former chef Darren McGrady told Express that this tradition followed their German descent (血统).“The royals are of German descent so they weave German traditions into their celebrations,” he said. “After afternoon tea, they open gifts on Christmas Eve, as is the German tradition.
Exchanging gifts on Christmas Eve frees up the family’s Christmas morning to attend the annual church service at the Church of St. Mary Magdalene in Sandringham Estate. McGrady told Cosmopolitan, “The service is followed by a big lunch consisting of roast chicken, salads, and traditional sides. They then regroup later for afternoon tea and fruitcake, followed by a buffet-style dinner later in the evening,”
The queen also has a few special traditions of her own to ensure the holiday spirit reaches everyone around her. Each year she personally hands out gifts to members of the royal family in Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle. She also purchases about 1,500 Christmas puddings for the staff throughout the palaces, which she pairs with a greeting card from herself and Prince Philip. So gift-giving certainly seems to be a huge part of the royal family’s holiday celebrations, just not necessarily on Christmas Day.
21. When do the royal family open their Christmas gifts?
A. On the morning of December 24. B. On the morning of December 25.
C. On die evening of December 24. D. On the evening of December 25.
22. The underlined word “weave” may mean________.
A. include B. turn C. change D. connect
23. What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A. How the royal family prepare for Christmas.
B. How the royal family spend Christmas Eve.
C. How the royal family spend their Christmas Day.
D. How the royal family send their Christmas gifts.
24. Which word can best describe the queen?
A. Selfless. B. Hard-working. C. Intelligent. D. Considerate.

Cash is king, or so they say. In one form or another, human beings have been carrying around money for hundreds of years. Metal was first made into cash between 700 and 600 BC by the Lydians (吕底亚人),and banknotes (钞票)have been in circulation since their first use in China around 1000 AD. These days, though, habits have changed. Modem technology means that while money is still widely used, it’s more likely to be in a digital form than a lot of notes and a handful of small change. If cash is the king, then it may eventually be dethroned(废黜).
In 2017, the banking trade body UK Finance reported a 15% fall in the use of cash. Since their first use, debit card(借记卡)payments have given cash a run for its money. Last year, for the first time ever, the use of debit cards and digital payment became the most popular method of paying. In fact, if it continues like this, the use of cold hard cash would end by 2026, says the report.
Many businesses decide not to take cash. For example, the Boot pub in Freston opened last year as a cashless pub. In a BBC article, its owner Mike Keen stated that, in this way, he could provide a quicker speed of service and save a lot of time as he needn’t cash up each day or put money in the bank several times each week.
However, according to the Access to Cash Review, an independent body measuring the need for cash in the UK, those living in rural areas with poor Internet connectivity and people who have physical or mental health problems are among those that find it difficult to use digital services. In addition, many service providers, such as window cleaners, are still paid cash in hand.
Is cash dead? Not yet it would seem, though as more technological solutions to payment, such as smart watches, become commonplace, its use is likely to decrease more. What's important is, the report concludes, to put in place infrastructure (基础设施)to ensure that those who still need to pay for the goods in an old-fashioned way can get their money’s worth,
25. From the first paragraph we know that_______.
A. Lydians invented banknotes
B. China first made metal into cash
C. modem technology has changed paying habits
D. cash is important in our lives
26. Mike Keen thinks that_______.
A. being cashless makes him earn less money
B. being cashless benefits him a lot
C. paying in cash is not safe
D. paying in cash has its advantages
27. What conclusion can we draw from Paragraph 4?
A. Some people in the UK still need cash.
B. People in rural areas are not wealthy.
C. Digital services are hard to use for most people in ttie UK.
D. People in rural areas have more health problems than those in cities.
28. What is the author’s attitude toward the future of cash?
A. Cash is too old-fashioned to be used.
B. We still need cash, although we use it less.
C. Cash payment will become more popular in rural areas.
D. Cash payment will be totally replaced with technological solutions.
