There are some places that have few or no Earthquakes, but most places in the world have them sometimes. The most talked-about earthquake in the United States was in San Francisco on April 18th, 1906. Over 500 people died in it. The"strongest one in North America was on March 28th, 1964. It happened in Alaska. On September 1st, 1923, a very terrible earthquake hit the Tokyo area of Japan, 140,000 people died. Most of them died in fires which followed the earthquake. Besides earthquakes, other kinds of things also make people afraid and they are very dangerous. But they probably don't worry people as much as earthquakes. The reason is that we often know when they are coming: we have some warning. But so far, no sure way is known to tell when an earthquake is coming.
