And very soon I had my stepfather, Dan. Even though I wasn't very nice to him, he never gave up on me.
As time went on,I realized that we had something in common. We liked to talk about movies and TV shows. We began to spend a lot of time hanging out together. It gave us a chance to get to know each other.

In the 1950s, a female swimming athlete set a goal for herself. She decided to swim across the English Channel before she retired. If she could make it, she would be the first person in the world who did it.
On that day, she jumped into the sea without any hesitation and swam towards the opposite bank.
In the journey, she faced heavy fog, heavy rain and heavy waves.Though she was very tired, she carried on swimming.
But in the end, she gave up.And what she didn't know at the moment she gave up was that the opposite bank was only 1 mile away.
Later people asked her about the reason. And she said, "The reason why I gave up is that I could not see the destination which I was so close to."
Too many success stories have been lecturing us about courage, and persistence(坚持).But they never told us where to find courage and persistence.
You can have courage only when you know where your goal is.You can manage to persist only when you know where your goal is, and prepare yourself well mentally(心理上).

Passage 11[2018潍坊改编]
Researchers in the 1960s found bilingual(双语的) people scored higher on intelligence(智力) tests than monolingual people who speak only one language. The latest studies show that being bilingual does not necessarily make people cleverer, but it probably does make you better at certain skills.
Imagine driving down the highway. There're many things that could attract your attention and you really need to be able to watch all of them. Why would bilingualism make you any better at that?
The answer is that bilingual people are often better at controlling their attention — a function(功能) called the executive control system. It's quite possibly the most important system you have because it's where all of your decisions about what to attend to, what to ignore(忽视), what to process are made.
The best method to measure(测量) the executive control system is called the Stroop Test. Suppose you would have the word "blue" written in red, but you have to say the colour red. But "blue" is so eye-catching, and you really want to say "blue". You need to ignore it so that you can say the colour red. That's the Stroop Test.
Bilingual people continually practice this function. They have to, because both languages are active in their brain at the same time. They need to ignore one to be able to speak in the other. This exercise might help in other ways, too. Researchers say bilingual children are more likely to have friends from different cultures. Bilingual adults are often four to five years later than others in developing Alzheimer's disease.
1.What did the recent research find about bilingual people?
A. They can safely drive their cars.
B. They can well manage their attention.
C. They can have a better control of imagination.
D. They can easily pick out the colours they want.
2.What does the underlined word "it" in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A. Red. B. Blue. C. Test. D. System.
3.What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. Bilingualism may do harm to people's health.
B. Bilingualism helps children make more foreign friends.
C. People must practice speaking two languages continually.
D. People use more active words from their mother languages.
4.What might be the best title for the text?
A. How does the Stroop Test work?
B. What is executive control system?
C. Are monolingual people smarter?
D. Are bilingual people better at some skills?
5.Where is the text probably from?
A. A shopping poster.
B. A school introduction.
C. A science report.
D. A guidebook.

Some scientists have been searching for answers. They've studied what happens in our brains as habits form. They've found answers to why bad habits are so difficult to kick. And they're developing ways to help us make the changes we'd like to make.
Habits are a normal part of life, and are often helpful."We wake up every morning, comb our hair or brush our teeth without being aware of it,"Volkow says.We can drive along familiar routes without really thinking about the directions."When behavior becomes automatic(无意识的),it gives us an advantage, because the brain does not have to perform the action on purpose,"Volkow says. This frees our brains to focus on different things.
One way to kick bad habits is to focus on your unhealthy habits. Then try your best to stop them. For example, habits can be linked in our minds to certain places and activities. You could develop a plan to avoid walking down the hall where there's a candy machine.Try to avoid going to places where you used to smoke.Stay away from friends and situations linked to drinking problem.
Another helpful way is to replace unhealthy habits with new and healthy ones. "It doesn't work for everyone,"Volkow says."But certain groups of patients who used to smoke can do something else like running and it helps them stay away from smoking."
