How to solve the traffic jam?
Nowadays, it’s hard to imagine how often you are a victim of traffic jam. As is shown in the picture, the road is crowded with hundreds of cars and buses, turning it into a huge parking lot.
Why is the traffic so heavy these days? The reasons are complex. On the one hand, with the fast development of our economy and living standard, the number of vehicles is rising sharply. Worse still, the road condition needs improving badly. Having been in use for many years, our traffic system is now out-of-date.
When it comes to the solution to this problem, I have 3 suggestions. Above all, the government must take immediate measures to improve the road condition. New tunnels and overpasses must be built and old roads must be broadened. Besides, local government must improve the public transportation system. Finally, citizens must be encouraged to reduce driving and make more use of public transportation. Thus, not only can we relieve the pressure of transportation, but also we can contribute to environmental protection.
In short, both the government and citizens must take on their own responsibilities. Only in this way can our transportation become more efficient.
1、提出需要议论的议题;
2、摆出正反两方面的观点;
3、表明作者持何种态度;
4、论证自己观点的正确性从而使读者接受自己的观点;
How horrible the traffic is! The picture depicts a scenario of a terrible traffic jam in the street. In fact, the traffic jam is so heavy that it is more of a parking lot than a crowded street. Anxious passengers cannot take buses because there are few buses. Instead, the street is filled with too many private cars.
Exaggerated as it is, the phenomenon is not uncommon nowadays. With the number of private cars increasing, traffic jams in metropolitans are bound to happen. Heavy transportation pressure in large cities may bring much inconvenience to people and exert negative impacts on the environment. On the one hand, when traffic jam happens, short distance in the past now seems to become terribly long, and drivers could do nothing but to wait. Therefore, a lot of precious time has been wasted on the road. On the other hand, exhausted gas emitted by cars? has increased the burden of environment and caused carbon emission, which has diverted from the concept of living a low carbon life.
Therefore, effective measures should be taken to alleviate the traffic jam. Firstly, taxes levied on the sales of private cars?should be raised so as to restrict private car ownership rate. Secondly, public transportation such as buses and subways, which are low-carbon transportation means, should be encouraged and promoted so that we can have a smooth transportation.

Earlier, we explained how to begin a search for schools by going to one of the American educational advising centers around the world. We also discussed the rules for entering in the United States. And we talked about programs that can be completed online.
But if your goal is to come to the United States to study, then it is time to make a list of colleges or universities that interest you. Be sure to choose more than one. Directors of foreign student admissions say students should apply to at least three schools.
Some students want to attend a small college. Others want to go to a big university. If a really big university appeals to you, then there are ones like Ohio State. That university in Columbus,Ohio,in the Midwest, has almost fifty-two thousand students. There are students this year from around one hundred fifty countries.
Ohio State provides international students with an application on its website. You can pay the application charge online with a credit card. Or you can print the forms and mail them with the payment.
Many colleges and universities have their applications and also their catalogs(目录)online.
You should start on your applications at least two years before you want to begin studies.
Completing a college application can take some time. But answering all the questions is not enough. Another important step is taking admissions tests. The SAT is the college entry test that American high school students most commonly take. Another one is the ACT.
Colleges and universities may also require international students to take the TOEFL—the Test of English as a Foreign Language.
If you have a general question for our Foreign Student Series, write to special @voanews.com.

One of the most popular literary figures in American literature is a woman who spent almost half of the long life in China,a country on a continent thousands of miles from the United States. In her lifetime she earned this country’s most highly acclaimed(称赞)literary award-the Pulitzer Prize, and also the most prestigious form of literary recognition in the world, the Nobel Prize for Literature. Pearl S. Buck was almost a household word throughout much of her lifetime because of her prolific literary output, which consisted of some eighty-five published works, including several dozen novels, six collections of short stories, fourteen books for children, and more than a dozen works of nonfiction. When she was eighty years old, some twenty-five volumes were awaiting publication. Many of those books were set in China, the land in which she spent so much of her life. Her books and her life served as a bridge between the cultures of the East and the West. As the product of those two cultures she became as she described herself, “mentally bifocal(双焦点的)”.Her unique background made her into an unusually interesting and versatile(多才多艺的) human being. To Lauder Exchange Program:
Gaia Filicori was a student in my Humanities class for the 2002—2003 year. From the first week of classes it was obvious that Gaia was an excellent student and a very sociable young lady. She was always eager to join in class discussion. Gaia’s ability to communicate her own ideas is a skill that many of us work for a very long time to achieve.
Gaia also has a deep curiosity about the world around her. The simple fact that she desires to spend a year in another country is proof enough. I have also seen her show this curiosity in class. She asked some of the most interesting and thoughtful questions of any of the students in her class. When others were content to accept a point, Gaia would see from a new angle that none of us had tried.
As a student in Humanities, Gaia was required to complete a group project. The project was to write a page for a Humanities textbook using text and multi-media. It was a challenging task and Gaia’s group was experiencing some difficulties. Yet, they had an easier time of it because they did not hesitate to come to me with their problems and try to work them out. As a result,Gaia and her group had one of the more successful projects. The ability needed to recognize a problem and ask for help to solve it will be of great value if she is selected to be a Lauder Exchange student.
Gaia’s interest in the world around her will serve her well as a Lauder Exchange student. The ease with which she gets along with others and the ease with which she makes new friends will also help her as she tries to learn in a foreign setting. I have no doubt that Gaia would be a wonderful representative of the Lauder Program,Stuyvesant High School, and the United States.

It is quite reasonable to blame traffic jams, the cost of gas and the great speed of modern life, but manners on the road are becoming horrible. Everybody knows that the nicest men would become fierce tigers behind the wheel. It is all right to have a tiger in a cage, but to have one in the driver’s seat is another matter.
Road politeness is not only good manners, but good sense. It takes the most cool-headed drivers great patience to give up the desire to beat back when forced to face rude driving. On the other hand, a little politeness goes a long way towards reducing the possibility of quarrelling and fighting. A friendly nod or a wave of thanks in answer to an act of politeness helps to create an atmosphere of goodwill and calm so necessary in modern traffic conditions. But such behaviors of politeness are by no means enough. Many drivers nowadays don’t even seem able to recognize politeness when they see it. However, misplaced politeness can also be dangerous. Typical examples are the driver who waves a child crossing the street at a wrong place into the path of oncoming cars that may not be able to stop in time. The same goes for encouraging old ladies to cross the road wherever and whenever they want to. It always amazes me that the highways are not covered with the dead bodies of these grannies.
An experienced driver, whose manners are faultless, told me it would help if drivers learnt to correctly join in traffic stream without causing total blockages that give rise to unpleasant feelings. Unfortunately, modern drivers can’t even learn to drive, let alone master the roadmanship. Years ago, experts warned us that the fast increase of the car ownership would demand more give-and-take from all road users. It is high time for all of us to take this message to heart.
16. Which of the following statements is false according to the passage?
A. Some modern drivers are not good at driving.
B. Road politeness is good sense as well as good manners.
C. It is also right to have a tiger in the driver’s seat.
D.A friendly driver should nod or wave thanks in answer to an act of politeness.

A. traffic jams
B. the behavior of the drivers
C. great speed
D. terrible road conditions
19. According to the writer,a good driver should .
A. beat back when forced to face rude driving
B. be able to recognize politeness when he sees it
C. encourage old ladies to cross the roads whenever they want to
D. join in traffic stream quickly however other people feel
20. The underlined phrase “give rise to” in the last paragraph probably means .

1. later?
2. until?
3. sitting?
4. was pretending?
5. mentally?
6. whom?由talk to sb.
7. they?指代the people。
8. on?因定词组on one’s own (=alone)。
9. an?短语搭配have a?conversation (谈话)。
10.?both?作made宾语用代词;又由上文 "We (指I and the mentally man) had an amazing conversation"可知,作者和那个弱智者“两人都”很高兴。
One possible version:
In China, traffic accidents happen frequently, which have a bad effect on the whole society. In view of the existing situation,we held a heated discussion on it.
We all share the opinion that the cause of accidents is mainly due to careless drivers, who don’t follow the traffic laws as they ought to. Could you imagine what will be waiting for a heavy drinker if he drives his car at a high speed? The injuries and possible deaths will teach him an unforgettable lesson, let alone the compensation to be paid. It is obvious to us that crowded roads lead to traffic accidents as well.
In conclusion, we suggest that people should make sense of traffic law and regulations and strengthen their sense of safety.
