Bill Bowerman was a track coach. He wanted to help athletes run faster. So he had learned how to make running shoes. He had also started a shoe company with a friend. It was 1971. Running shoes at the time were heavy. They had spikes (鞋钉) on the sole (鞋底). The spikes tore up the track and slowed down runners.
To make a lighter shoe, Bill tried the skins of fish. To make a better sole, he wanted to replace the spikes. Bill dug through his wife Barbara's jewelry box. He hoped to find a piece of jewelry with an interesting pattern. He would then copy the pattern onto the new soles. Nothing worked. Bill was defeated.
Then, one Sunday morning, Barbara made Bill waffles (华夫饼) for breakfast. Bill watched her cook. He studied the criss-cross pattern on a waffle iron.
Inspiration struck. The pattern on the waffle iron was just what Bill was looking for. The squares were flatter and wider than sharp spikes. The pattern would help the shoes hold any surface without tearing into it.
When Barbara left the house, Bill ran to his lab. He took the liquid chemicals that, when mixed, would harden into the sole of a shoe. He poured the mixture into the waffle iron---and the Waffle Trainer was born.
Bill's company put the Waffle Trainer on market in 1974. It was a huge hit. Maybe you’ve heard of that company---it's called Nike. And today it's worth around $100 billion.
It was the waffle iron that had changed the course of Bill’s life---and helped turn Nike into a well-known name. Today, the waffle iron is kept at Nike headquarters. It serves as a reminder that if we keep trying, we can find a solution to even the most difficult problems. And those solutions can come from unlikely places, even the breakfast table.
24. What shortcomings did the old-style running shoes have?
A. They were hard to wear. B. They were impractical.
C. They were too large. D. They were easy to break.
25. Where did Bill get the inspiration to invent the famous Waffle Trainer?
A. From the skins of the fish. B. From his wife’s jewelry.
C. From the color of the iron. D. From his wife’s cooking.
26. What can we learn from Bill's success?
A. Where there's a will, there's a way. B. Two heads are better than one.
C. A cheer wife is the joy of life. D. A bad workman quarrels with his tools.
27. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. A Great Inventor B. Inspiration and Invention
C. Waffles and Nike D. A Well-Known Company

Breakfast is not only the most important meal of the day, it is also the most neglected. Common reasons for not eating breakfast include lack of time, not feeling hungry, traditional dislike for breakfast, and dieting.
Breakfast simply means “break the fast”. Your body spends at least 6 to 12 hours each night in a fasting state. In the morning your body needs energy for the day’s work ahead.
A good breakfast should provide up to 1/3 of your total calories needed for the day. On average(平均), we eat 400 less calories for breakfast than for dinner. If breakfast doesn’t attract you in the morning, try to eat a little.
If you aren’t hungry in the morning, start with something small like juice or toast or have a nutritious mid-morning snack later when you are hungry.
So, you say you’re on a diet. Some people fear eating breakfast will make them hungrier during the day and they will eat more. It is true that eating breakfast is likely to make you eat more. That’s because your body is working all day long.
Not eating breakfast can also cause you to overeat, since a fall in blood sugar often makes you feel very hungry later. To make matters worse, since your body is in a slowed state it will not be able to burn those extra calories very quickly. If you feed your body healthy snacks and meals through the day, you are less likely to become hungry and fill yourself as soon as you begin to eat. Since breakfast is the first and most important meal of the day, choosing the right fuel is important. The best breakfast foods are fruits, juice, lean meat, and grain products such as bread, rice, noodles.
28.Which of the following statements is NOT the reason for not having breakfast?
A.Their time is limited. B.They want to lose weight.
C.They don’t feel hungry. D.They want to have a rest.
29.What’s the meaning of the underlined word “fast” in Paragraph 2?
A. Certain kind of food. B. Movement. C. Going without food. D. Quickness.
30.If you don’t want to have breakfast in the morning, the author suggests you .?
A. have some snacks when hungry B. have a good dinner
C. see a doctor to have an examination D.go to a restaurant to enjoy a good meal
31.From the passage, we can know the author believes .?
A.it’s OK not to have breakfast B. it’s necessary to have a right breakfast
C.you can decide whether to have breakfast D. it’s important to go on a diet at breakfast
D
Vitamin B could help lessen the effects of the most dangerous type of air pollution, according to a new study published recently. In the first study of its kind,a team of international researchers looked at the damage caused by one of the pollutants that has the most severe impact on health:PM2.5.
Particulate matter,or PM, is a type of air pollutant consisting of small particles of different sizes. PM2.5 has a diameter of fewer than 2.5 micrometers, about 30 times smaller than a human hair. These particles are so small that they can go into our respiratory system (呼吸系统), resulting in lung and systemic inflammation (炎症) and stress.
The team found that something as simple as a daily vitamin B supplement could potentially reduce the impact of the tiny particles on the human body, although they stressed that the research was in its early stages and the sample size was small.
For this study,10 volunteers were initially exposed to clean air and given a placebo(安慰剂) to check their responses. The group then took another placebo for four weeks before being exposed to heavily polluted air from downtown Toronto, where an estimated 1,000 cars pass every hour. The bad air was delivered to the volunteers through an “oxygen-type” face mask. The experiment was then repeated, with each volunteer taking a B vitamin supplement daily made up of 2.5 mg of folic acid, 50 mg of vitamin B6,and 1 mg of vitamin B12.B6 can be found in liver, chicken and nuts, and B12 in fish, meat, eggs, milk and some cereals.
The researchers found that four weeks of B vitamin supplements reduced the damage of PM2.5 exposure by 28%—76%. The results highlight how prevention at an individual level could be used to fight the harmful effects of PM2.5.
32. Why is PM2.5 harmful to our health?
A. It pollutes and poisons the air. B. It is too much to be got rid of.
C. It carries viruses and diseases. D. It is easily breathed in and damages our body.
33. What can we infer from Paragraph 3?
A. The process of the research was not scientific.
B. This kind of research has been done many times.
C. Further studies are needed to confirm their findings.
D. Vitamin B is hard to obtain in people's daily life.
34. What is the text mainly about?
A. International researchers have a new finding.
B. Vitamin B could reduce the damage of PM2.5.
C. Particulate matter does great harm to our health.
D. Emission control and regulation are badly needed.
35. The new study was probably published________.
A. in a science journal B. on a government website
C. in a fashion magazine D. in a medical textbook

The beauty of confidence is that it is possible to learn it, no matter who you are! Follow these simple steps to be confident.

38 Failure is the mother of success. When you fail, view it as a learning experience. Often we have to fail on our own to gain experience. By failing, you have at least taken a chance.
Pick a role model. Pick a role model that is always confident and always learn from them. Study their action, their manners of speaking and how they communicate with others. 39 However, it's a great place to start.

A:You can get a monthly income of $5,200. 5200*12=62400;B:An expected first year income of $45,000;C:You can get at least $50,000 in your first year;D:Weekends off, except during sowing and harvest periods. $39,000 a year。
由“Your role will be to provide the best possible service to customers, Monday to Friday. You must have……. Please call Stuart 0427-111105 or email to stuart@boekemans.com.au if any further information is needed”可知,车间主任工作时间星期一到星期五,并且对工作经验没有特别要求。
24. 细节理解题 根据第一段 “Running shoes at the time were heavy. They had spikes (鞋钉) on the sole (鞋底). The spikes tore up the track and slowed down runners.”
A 选项 Where there's a will, there's a way.
根据第1段中的“Common reasons for not eating breakfast include lack of time, not feeling hungry, traditional dislike for breakfast, and dieting.”
根据第2段中的“Your body spends at least 6 to 12 hours ……for the day’s work ahead.”
根据最后一段中的“Since breakfast is the first and most important meal of the day, choosing the right fuel is important.”
根据第二段中的“These particles are so small that they can go into our respiratory system(呼吸系统),resulting in lung and systemic inflammation(炎症)and stress”可知,PM2.5(细颗粒物)很小,能进入我们的呼吸系统,导致肺部和全身炎症。
根据第三段中的“although they stressed that the research was in its early stages and the sample size was small”可知,该项研究处于初级阶段且样本规模小,因此还需要更多的研究来证明研究团队的发现。
Consider your strengths and success想一下自己的优点和缺点,故下文提到如果有可能的话,把它们写下来,这样你以后可以回头看他们.
38.A 概括题.从下文Failure is the mother of success失败时成功之母,建议我们从失败中吸取教训.
Pick a role model.Pick a role model that is always confident and always learn from them建议我们要有一个学习的楷模,但不是要求一生都在模仿别人.
