(共28张PPT)
What is happening in the picture?
A cyclone is
blowing.
What is cyclone?
A tropical cyclone is the general term for a low pressure system over tropical or sub tropical waters, with organised convection and low level winds. They can circulate either clockwise (in the northern hemisphere) or anticlockwise (in the southern hemisphere). The whole storm may be five to six miles high and 300 to 400 miles wide although sometimes even bigger.
What would it be like to be in a house when a cyclone was overhead?
Where might you shelter during a cyclone?
Listen and write 1-7 beside the events to show the order in which they happened.
The wind stopped for a short while.
They got out of the bath and looked around their house.
The family prepared food for Christmas and put presents under the Christmas tree.
Christine’s father put a mattress over the top of the bath.
They heard loud noises and the walls of the house began to shake.
The cyclone moved away.
Christine and Brian got into the bath.

Why did they hide in the bathroom rather than anywhere else?

Why didn’t leave the house?
What do you know about floods?
What causes them?
What do people do to minimize the floods’ effect?
How are people rescued from floods?
Read and answer the questions.
Who told Sara to go to her mother’s house and why?
What was the first sign Sara had that she was in danger?
Who was in the house with Sara?
Why did Sara climb onto the roof of her car?
Who told Sara to go to her mother’s house and why?
Sara’s husband Tony told her because he was afraid the valley would become flooded. Sara’s mother’s house was on higher ground so it was less likely to be flooded.
2. What was the first sign Sara had that she was in danger?
A sound like water going down the drain in the bath.
3. Who was in the house with Sara?
Her baby, a dog and a cat.

4. Why did Sara climb onto the roof of her car?
The water was rising and she had to get somewhere above it.
Read carefully and discuss the following questions.
Do you think Sara did the right thing?
Is there anything else that you think Sara should have done?
Make your suggestions.
She would have waited quietly upstairs in the house. If she had done this:
She would have been above the level of the flood water.
She would have saved her car opening the door to climb onto the roof meant that the car was ruined by the flood water.
Make your suggestions.
She could have left the house before the water came.
Her husband knew about the water and had told her to go to her mother’s house.
Sandbags had been put as a barrier to the water so a flood was expected.
Make your suggestions.
She could have left the house as soon as her husband phoned.
She had not prepared well in advance.
She was too slow in her preparations once she had decided to leave.
Imagine you are Sara. Tell your partner what happened on the day of the flood. Use your imagination to invent an ending to the story.
I was in the house by myself. Tony phoned
and told me to leave the house right away
because the river was going to flood.
Suddenly I noticed that water was coming
into the house. I was really worried because
I knew that the house would soon be
flooded. I put Brian into his backpack and
the cat in its basket and we rushed out the
front door as fast as we could, the dog
swimming beside me. At first I couldn’t
think what to do, then I ran over to the car.
First I pushed the cat and dog onto the
roof then I climbed up on it myself. I
looked down and saw the water was still
rising. I was frightened. We stayed on the
roof for about two hours and all the time
the water was getting higher and higher. I
didn’t know what to do next. Then all of a
sudden I saw a motor boat coming
towards us. It was Tony! We were going to
be rescued.
Can you retell Sara’s story in the flood?
What’s your idea for ending the story?
Listen and say how Sara was rescued.
By a helicopter.
Listen and notes about the main events in the story. Then use your notes to make a timeline, starting at 9:40 am when Sara climbed onto her car and ending at 6 pm when she arrived at the hospital.
Make a timeline.
Sara climbed onto the roof of the car
climbed onto the roof of the house
found a place to sit and took James out
Of her backpack
Rosie climbed up the house roof to join
Sara
saw a helicopter coming
arrived at hospital
Choose one of the natural disasters or any other disaster you know about. Make a timeline to show the order in which the events happened. For example:
10am left the holiday house to walk in the mountains
12am saw dark clouds in the sky, started to go back
12:30pm snowstorm started
1:00pm we were completely lost
… …
Work with your partner. Take turns to tell your story. When you listen to your partner’s story, ask questions about how he / she felt at different time.
Imagine you are safely back home. Write a dairy entry about your experience.
A Sample
December 15, 2013
Jane and I were walking in the mountains when we noticed some dark clouds coming down the mountain. We decided to turn around and go home.
As we walked the clouds got nearer and nearer and it grew darker. Then all of a sudden it began to snow. It was soon snowing so hard we couldn’t see very far in front of us. Holding each others’ hands so we couldn’t get separated, we continued down the mountain.
The snow on the ground got deeper. Walking became harder and harder. We began to get very tired and very frightened.
After a while the path became buried under the snow and we didn’t know which way to go. We were completely lost. We found some shelter behind a big rock. Hugging each other for warmth, we stayed like that until the storm was over.
Luckily it only lasted an hour or two. Then the sun came out again and we could see our house in the distance. We were so relieved that we both burst into tears.
