The Vieira family moved to the United States in 1981. At that time, they decided to stop speaking French at home and communicate only in English. This was because they were living in an English-speaking country.
Now, the Vieira children have grown up. They sometimes travel back to France to visit their friends. However, they can’t communicate with them. This, regrettably, is quite common. When people move to a new country, they often leave their own customs and mother language behind. This is a mistake because there are many advantages of knowing more than one language.
One advantage of speaking more than one language is that you can communicate directly with people from around the world. You do not have to depend on others to talk for you. People who know only one language usually need a translator to help them communicate.
Moreover, speaking a second language allows people to experience other cultures and customs better. Local expressions, words and even jokes can help a person understand another culture. So, knowing more than one language helps you gain knowledge of other cultures.
Finally, having more speakers who know more than one language improves relationships between countries. If people from different countries can communicate well, the world can become more peaceful. Countries will have more respect for each other and will better understand each other’s problems.
The advantages of knowing more than one language are clear. In fact, there are no disadvantages. It is very sad that many people don’t try to learn another language. It is even worse when people choose to forget their mother language.
(?? ??? ?)54. The passage begins with the experience of the Vieira family in order to .
A. discuss the need for teaching a second language
B. show the problems of speaking only one language
C. describe the advantages of moving to another country
D. introduce the passage’s main characters to readers

C. understand history better D. communicate more independently?
(?? ??? ?)56.?According to the last part, which of the following is the most terrible?
A. Not knowing a foreign language. B. Forgetting one’s mother language.
C. Refusing to learn foreign languages. D. Failing to communicate with others.
(?? ??? ?)57. What is the passage mainly about?
A. The advantages of knowing many languages.
B. The reasons why people visit America.
C. The importance of learning English.
D. The methods of learning foreign languages.

For years, it has been said that newspapers are at death’s door. Every year brings more
news of closing. But why is the situation so terrible for newspapers?
Newspapers have a long history. The first newspaper was printed in the 1600s. The
industry witnessed its most successful periods in the early 20th century.
With the appearance of radio and TV, however, the number of copies of newspaper that
were sold began to fall. By the mid-20th century, radio and TV had become so popular that people no longer had to depend on newspapers for news. That was especially true of breaking news.
Afternoon newspapers were the first to become worse. People coming home from work
increasingly turned on the TV, instead of opening a newspaper. But generally, newspapers still managed to survive. Although TV had the advantage of speed, newspapers could provide in-depth reports that TV news could not.
But newspapers became worse after another heavier blow in the 1990s. With the
appearance of the Internet, large numbers of information became free. Many newspaper readers realized that they could easily read news online for free. There seemed to be little reason to pay for a newspaper.
So what does the future hold? Will newspapers die? Maybe not. Many newspapers are
now changing. Some are going digital. Some are going farther and taking the industry to places it has never been to. After all, people still want the news. And many agree that newspapers are
still an important source of in-depth news, analysis(分析) and ideas. If newspapers disappear
completely, there will be nothing to take their place.
(?? ??? ?)58. The underlined part “breaking news” probably means news of events that .
A. make people sad B. have just happened
C. are about famous people D. happen in other countries
(?? ??? ?)59. How did newspapers manage to survive against competition from TV?
A. By going digital. B. By working with TV.
C. By including more pictures. D. By centering on in-depth reports.
(?? ??? ?)60. Newspapers became worse again in the 1990s because .
A. people lost interest in reading news B. newspapers became more expensive
C. TV started to center on in-depth news D. people could read news online for free
(?? ??? ?)61. Which of the following would the author agree with?
A. The future of newspapers is very bright.
B. The future of newspapers is still uncertain.
C. Many newspapers will die in the near future.
D. Afternoon newspapers will become popular again.
D
I was raised in a house where my sisters and I weren’t trusted by our mother
to manage our own appearance. As a result, there were rules, and fashion was
largely ignored (忽视).
A few years ago, I was home for a visit when my mom, now in her early 70s, called me into her bedroom. We were about ready to leave for dinner. “I don’t know what to wear,” she complained from her seat. “You girls always look so good.”
I paused in the doorway and looked at her, wondering if I’d misheard. “What do you mean?” I asked her. “You know what to wear.”
“No,” she answered. “I don’t. Can you pick something?”
I was so surprised. This was the same woman who, in 1989, told me I wasn’t allowed to leave the house wearing a pair of ripped jeans; the same woman who, in high school, called my younger sister while she was out at a party to ask if her hair was up. “You look better with it down,” she told the girl, before she could answer.
I realized, suddenly, that my mother --- always so strong --- not only wanted my opinion, but needed it. I pulled a pair of blue jeans from the closet and a light blue sweater from her drawer.
“Wear these with your black shoes,” I told her. She did as I suggested. My mother certainly doesn’t need anyone to take care of her. In fact, she still cares for my grandmother who lives with her. But with that one question, my mother and I started the role change that happens with all parents and all children, from care giver to receiver.
Now, if I’m visiting or we’re together, it’s rare for her to wear anything without checking with me first. But sometimes, it seems that she asks me just to be able to disagree with my answer and pick out something on her own. And when she does, I just tell her what I think of the way she looks. Sometimes it’s “great”. And sometimes it’s “awful”.
( ) 62. When the writer was young, she ______.
A. could never know what to wear B. was not allowed to go to parties at night

D. had to pick her clothes according to her mother’s rules

A. was unhappy to do something for her mother
B. began to realize her mother needed her care
C. had no idea what was suitable for her mother
D. was worried that her mother was too old to live alone
( ) 64. When the writer gives her opinion about clothes, her mother ______.
A. always accepts her advice happily B. is still uncertain about what to wear

D. sometimes chooses to follow her own ideas

A. show what it is like to have a strict mother

八、阅读与回答问题(本题共5题;每小题2分,满分10分)
There are some problems that today’s society is facing. One of them is who should be responsible(负有责任的) for our elderly and how to improve their lives, and this is a serious one. I would like to suggest several possible ways.
First, bosses should think about their retired workers. At least they should leave a percentage of gains. But when it comes true, the company may be troubled because of higher costs.
? Another way is to return the responsibility to everyone. This means each person must save during his working years to pay for his years of retirement. Some people find that it’s difficult for them to have pay for their daily life without trying to get extra to cover their retirement years. This means the government might have to step in to care for the poor.
? The government can provide more money through government taxes(税) to increase the level of pensions (养老金). And some organizations should provide a comfortable life for them. However, as the present situation in our country shows, this is not a truly?practical?answer. The government doesn’t have enough money to care for the elderly, especially when it is busy trying to care for the young.
One further solution is that the government or social organizations set up some working places especially for the elderly.
In short, all these solutions have advantages and disadvantages. So we are expecting to put these solutions together so that we can provide the care we hope to give to our elderly.
96. What is the serious problem for today’s society?
97. How many possible ways are mentioned?
98. What may happen to a company when it leaves 1% of gains?
99. How can the government increase the level of pensions?
100.What can you do for the elderly in your daily life? (请自拟一句话作答)

The person who has influenced me most
Mother Teresa is my hero. She has influenced me most. She was born in Europe , on August 27, 1910 and died on September 5,1997. She is thought the kindest person in the world.
You will not find anything unusual about her until you learn more about her She was always kind and helpful. She devoted all her life to helping people in need. She often gave the food and clothes to people who could not afford them. When she had money left, she gave it the the poor. She still worked in India when she was in her eighties. She got Nobel Peace Prize at last.
At first, I could not understand why she always seemed to be kinder to others than to herself. Now I realize that she has a heart full of love. I think she is the most beautiful person in the world. I should learn from her.
