转述结构/非谓语动词的被动语态
概念引入
转述结构,又称为间接引语,我们在必修5已经学习过。在本单元再复习一下,先看下面句子:
1. They claim that in the last 50 years, gases pumped into the Earth’s atmosphere by the factories and vehicles have been speeding up the process of global warming and affecting our climate.
2. Recent reports warned that global warming will cause terrible climate changes including more frequent flooding, heat waves and droughts.
3. Many people believe that they are simply not prepared to sacrifice the amount of money they make from industry to save the Earth.
这些句子中的黑体词就是要复习的转述结构之一。另外,我们还要小结一下非谓语动词的被动结构。先看下面的句子:
Christo manages to do all this without being given any money—his projects are financed completely by the sale of his drawings through galleries and over the Internet.
However, his work still tends to be criticized.
这两个句子中斜体部分是谓语动词的被动语态,而黑体部分是非谓语动词的被动语态,第一个是动名词的被动语态,第二个是不定式的被动语态。使用被动语态,尤其是非谓语动词的被动语态要注意什么呢?下面我们就这两方面的内容进行详细复习,其中同时有主动语态和被动语态的句子时,只翻译含被动语态的句子。
用法讲解
转述结构1
定义:
转述结构:在转述他人的话、观点或看法时,常使用转述结构,转述结构也叫间接引语。
几种转述结构:
结构1:动词+ (sb. +) that从句(转述的话是陈述句时)
He said, “I’ll give you an examination next Monday.” →
He told us that he would give us an examination the next Monday.
他告诉我们他下周一要给我们一次考试。
(用于此结构的转述动词有:
add, agree, repeat, admit, believe, boast (自考), claim, whisper (低语), answer, reply, explain, announce, declare, think, complain, deny (否认), insist, remind, suggest, warn, etc.
He complained that he was paid too little.
他抱怨给他的钱太少。
He explained to us that he was late because of the heavy traffic.
他向我们解释因为交通拥堵他迟到了。
The judge declared that they were innocent and should be set free right away.
法官宣布他们是无辜的而且应该立刻被释放。
结构2:动词+if/whether从句(转述的话为一般疑问句时)
(用于此结构的转述动词主要有ask, wonder, inquire (询问)等。
He said, “Do you have any difficulty with pronunciation?” →
He asked (me) whether/ if I had any difficulty with my pronunciation.
他问我是否在发音方面有困难。
We inquired him whether Russians enjoyed playing golf or not.
我们问他俄国人是否喜欢打高尔夫。
结构3:动词+what/ when等引导的从句(转述的话为特殊疑问句时)
(用于此结构的转述动词主要有ask, wonder, inquire (询问)等。
She asked me, “When do they have their dinner?”→
She asked me when they had their dinner.
她问我他们什么时候吃正餐?
结构4:动词+sb. to do sth. (转述的话为祈使句时)
( 用于此结构的转述动词有:ask, advise, tell, warn, order, request等。
“Never come here again!” said the officer nearby. →
The officer nearby ordered them never to go there again.
附近的军官命令他们不许再去那里。
( 带有let的祈使句(表示请求,建议或命令),可用suggest + -ing形式或suggest +that从句来表示其相应的意思。
“Let’s go for a walk,” said the girl. →
The girl suggested going for a walk. 女孩建议去散步。
The teacher said, “Let Lily tidy the classroom.” →
The teacher suggested that Lily should tidy the classroom. 老师说莉莉应该打扫教室。
结构5:动词+ to do sth.
( 常用于此结构的转述动词有:agree, offer, refuse, threaten, etc.
“I’ll take legal action.” he threatened. →
He threatened to take legal action. 他威胁要采取法律行动。
结构6:动词+ doing sth.
( 常用于此结构的转述动词有:admit, deny, suggest, etc.
“Shall we all go to the film tonight?” said Michael. →
Michael suggested going to the film tonight. 迈克尔建议今晚去看电影。
注意:转述的话形式上是疑问句,有“请求,建议”意义时,可用ask sb. to do sth /suggest doing/advise sb. to do sth. 等形式转述。
“Would you mind opening the door?” he asked. →
He asked me to open the door. 他请我打开门。
“Why not go out for a walk?” he asked us. →
He advised us to go out for a walk. 他劝我们出去散步。
He suggested going out for a walk. 他建议出去散步。
结构7:动词+ 介词+ doing sth.
( 常用于此结构的转述动词有:accuse of, succeed in, etc.
He has been accused of pick-pocketing. 他被指控是扒手(掏包的)。
转述结构2
在转述过程中,要注意时态、指示代词、时间状语、地点状语和动词等变化。
时态的变化
1. 转述内容是以宾语从句的形式出现,则应注意保持从句和主句谓语动词在时态方面的一致性。主句中的谓语动词如果是过去时,从句(即转述部分)的谓语动词在时态方面要变成过去时的相应时态(即宾语从句的时态要求),直接引语中的一般过去时多改为过去完成时。
He told me that he would take two days off work. 他告诉我他会请两天假。
The boy admitted that he had made a mistake. 那个男孩承认他犯了一个错误。
2.从句时态无须改变的情况:
1) 当主句的谓语动词是一般现在时的时候:
He always says, “I am tired out.” →
He always says that he is tired out. 他总说他累极了。
2) 当直接引语部分带有具体的过去时间状语时:
He said, “I went to college in 2004.” →
He told us that he went to college in 2004. 他告诉我们他2004年上了大学。
3) when,while,since等引导的时间状语从句中。
He said that it was many years since he came to live there.
他说他去那里住已经许多年了。
4) 当直接引语是客观真理或自然现象时:
Our teacher said to us, “Light travels faster than sound.” →
Our teacher told us that light travels faster than sound. 我们老师告诉我们光比声音传播得快。
5) 当引语是谚语、格言时:
He said, “Practice makes perfect.” →
He said that practice makes perfect. 他说熟能生巧。
6) 当直接引语中有情态动词should, would, could, had better等时:
The doctor said, “You’d better drink plenty of water.” →
The doctor said I’d better drink plenty of water. 医生说我最好大量饮水。
注意:转述中的变化要因实际情况而定,不能机械照搬。如果转述的时间没有发生多大的改变或所转述的内容是一个事实时,宾语从句中的谓语动词所用的时态不必改变。
Our teacher told us that the sports meet will take place next Monday.
我们老师告诉我们运动会下周一举行。
(“告诉”时还没有到下周一,所以宾语从句时态和时间状语不变。)
人称的变化
常用的规则:一随主,二随宾,三不更新。但是具体使用时要针对具体情况调整。
“I’ll let you know as soon as I get the tickets,” he told me. →
He told me that he would let me know as soon as he got the tickets.
他告诉我他一买到票,就让我知道。
对比下面对话:
Tom: I’ll let you know as soon as I get the tickets, Alice.
Alice: What did Tom say, Ben?
Ben: He told you that he would let you know as soon as he got the tickets.
语序的变化
转述的部分是一般疑问句、选择疑问句和反义疑问句,要改为陈述句语序。
“You haven’t been to Beijing, have you?” asked he. →
He asked me if/whether I had been to Beijing. 他问我是否去过北京。
“Do you like this one or that one?” Tom asked. →
Tom asked me whether I liked this one or that one. 汤姆问我我是喜欢这一个还是那一个。
指示代词、时间状语、地点状语和动词的变化
地点状语:here → there
指示代词:this → that; these → those
方向性动词:come → go;bring → take
时间状语:
now → then
today → that day
this evening/ tonight → that evening/ that night
yesterday → the day before
three days ago → three days before
the day before yesterday → two days before/earlier
next week → the next week
tomorrow → the next day
the day after tomorrow → in two days’ time
被动语态:使用被动语态的场合
主语是动作的发出者,谓语动词用主动语态;主语是动作的承受者,谓语动词用被动语态。而非谓语动词的被动语态指不定式和动词-ing形式的被动语态,其动作的承受者是不定式或动词-ing形式的逻辑主语,此时不定式或动词-ing多用被动语态。
注意:只有及物动词和可以接宾语的动词短语才可能有被动语态。
使用被动语态的场合
1. 当关注的是事情或事物本身而不是动作的执行者,或者根本不知道动作的执行者时。
My bike was stolen last night. 我的自行车昨晚被偷了。
2. 动作的执行者很明确时或强调承受者时。
I was given only ten minutes to decide whether I should accept the offer.
只给了我10分钟来决定是否接受这个工作。
3. 为了更好地安排句子。
The monitor entered the classroom and was immediately surrounded by her classmates.
班长走进教室,立刻被同学们围住了。(一个主语就够了,上下文连接紧密、流畅)
His projects are financed by the sale of his drawings through galleries and the Internet.
他通过美术馆和因特网卖了他的画,为他的计划筹集了资金。(避免主语过长)
被动语态的时态变化
被动语态由“be+过去分词”构成,be随时间的变化而有不同的时态。例如:
Visitors are requested not to touch the exhibits.(一般现在时)
要求参观者不能触碰展品。
All the preparations for the task have been completed, and we’re ready to start.
任务的准备工作都已经完成了,我们可以开始了。(现在完成时)
A new cinema is being built here.(现在进行时)
这里正建造一家新的电影院。
This book was written in 1969. (一般过去时)
这本书是1969年写成的。
He said the factory had been opened. (过去完成时)
他说这家工厂已经开张。
A meeting was being held when I was there. (过去进行时)
我在那儿时,一个会议正在进行。
Hundreds of jobs will be lost if the factory closes. (一般将来时)
如果这家工厂关了门,成百上千的人会失业。
The news would be sent to the soldier’s mother as soon as it arrived. (过去将来时)
消息一到,就会被送给那位士兵的母亲。
被动语态的特殊结构
1. 带情态动词的被动结构:情态动词+be+过去分词。
The baby should be taken good care of by the baby-sitter.
婴儿应该受到临时保姆的很好的照顾。
2. 使役动词have, make, get以及感官动词see, watch, notice, hear, feel, observe等后面不定式作宾语补语时,在主动结构中不定式to要省略,但变为被动结构时,要加to。
Someone saw a stranger walk into the building. →
A stranger was seen to walk into the building. 有人看见一个陌生人走进了楼里。
3. 某些表示“据说”或“相信”的动词如believe, consider, expect, report, say, suppose, think等可以用于句型“It+be+过去分词+that从句”或“主语+be+过去分词+to do sth.”。
It is said that the boy has passed the national exam.
=The boy is said to have passed the national exam. 据说那个男孩通过了全国性考试。
We are thought to win the game.
=It is thought that we could win the game. 大家认为我们会赢得比赛。
不定式的被动式:
1. 当不定式的逻辑主语是此不定式动作的承受者时,一般要用不定式的被动式。不定式的被动式可以在句中作主语、宾语、表语、定语、状语等。
2. 不定式的被动式有两种形式:
to be done 表示动词不定式的动作在谓语动词之后或同时发生。
to have been done 表示不定式的动作发生在谓语动词之前。
It is a great honor to be invited to attend the opening ceremony of Asian Games.
被邀请参加亚运会开幕式,是一大荣幸。
He pretended to have been beaten by his stepfather.
他假装被他的继父打了。
3. 不定式逻辑主语的确定:
用不定式的主动形式还是被动形式取决于不定式动作与其逻辑主语的关系,所以找出不定式的逻辑主语很重要。
1)一般是句子的主语。
The clerk wouldn’t like to be laughed at by her customers.
这位职员不希望被她的顾客嘲笑。
He hurried to the booking office only to be told that all the tickets had been sold out.
他匆忙赶到订票处却被告知所有的票都卖完了。
2)作宾语补足语的不定式的逻辑主语是其宾语。
The disabled child expected the cinema to be designed by the chief architect.
这个残疾的孩子希望由这个主建筑师来设计这座电影院。
3)作定语的不定式的逻辑主语多是定语所修饰的词。
He is proud of the Olympic Games to be held in his country.
他对即将在他们国家举行的奥运会感到骄傲。
4)有时需要添加of/ for引出不定式的逻辑主语。
It is an honor for me to be invited to speak here.
我很荣幸被邀请在这里讲话。
动词-ing形式的被动形式:
当动词-ing形式的逻辑主语是-ing所表示的动作的承受者时要用-ing形式的被动语态。
I noticed his face being hit black and blue. 我注意到他的脸被打得青一块紫一块的。
(hit的逻辑主语his face与hit是被动关系)
如何确定-ing形式的逻辑主语:
1. 一般是句子的主语。
Having been punished many times, he still made the same mistake.
已经被罚了好几次了,他仍然犯同样的错误。
2. 动词-ing形式作定语时,其逻辑主语可以是所修饰词。
The question being discussed at the meeting makes everyone excited and puzzled.
正在会上讨论的问题使每个人兴奋而困惑。
3. 动词-ing形式作宾语补足语时,逻辑主语一般是其宾语。
As we approached the village we saw new houses being built.
走近村子时,我们看到人们正盖新房子。
4. 如果-ing形式有自己的逻辑主语,有两种形式:
1)一般在-ing形式前加形容词性物主代词或名词的所有格,如果不在句首,也可以用代词的宾格或名词;
What made her upset was her not being allowed to go out alone at night.
使她心烦的是晚上不允许她出去。
2)在-ing形式前加名词或代词的主格,构成独立主格结构,此形式只作状语。
All the exam papers having been handed in, the teacher sent the class home.
所有的试卷都收完了,老师就让学生放学了。
动词-ing形式的被动语态的构成:
一般式:being done
完成式:having been done
1)一般式多表示-ing形式的动作正在发生或与谓语动作同时发生。
Being punished by the teacher makes him unhappy. 被老师罚了使他很不高兴。
2)完成式表示-ing形式的动作在谓语动作之前完成。
Having written the letter, John went to the post office. 约翰写完了信,去了邮局。
注意:有时虽然动词-ing形式的动作在谓语动作之前已经完成,但是不强调完成时,也可以用一般式的被动形式代替,以免显得累赘。
非谓语动词主动表示被动
不定式的主动表被动
1. 在句型“主语+be +adj. +to do”中
能用于此句型的形容词有:difficult, easy, comfortable, fit, hard, pleasant, tiresome, interesting, nice, heavy, dangerous, light, important等。
The chair is very comfortable to sit on. 这把椅子坐着很舒适。
2. 不定式的动作的执行者在句中出现时。
不定式作定语与被修饰词构成动宾关系时,如果句中有此不定式动作的执行者,一般不用被动语态。
Please lend me a pen to write with. 请借给我一支钢笔写字。
(to write with是“me”做的)
3. 在“疑问词+不定式”结构中。
Who do you think can tell us what to do? 你认为谁可以告诉我们做什么?
4. 在“too...to do; enough...to do”结构中。
The story was not interesting enough to publish. 这部小说趣味性不够,不能发表。
5. 有些不定式,如:to let, to blame, to rent等常用主动结构表示被动含义。
Who is to blame for starting the fire? 引起这场火灾应由谁负责?
6. 在there be结构中,用不定式的主动和被动式来修饰主语,区别不大。
There is nothing to fear/to be feared. 没有什么可害怕的。
动词-ing的主动表被动
1. want,need,require,deserve等动词后作宾语的动词,常用动词-ing形式的主动语态表示被动意义。
Your car needs filling. 你这车要充气了。
This city deserves visiting. 这座城市值得光顾一下。
2. (be)worth后面只能用动名词的主动态来表示被动意义。
His suggestion is worth considering. 他的建议值得考虑。
