6. Bring Ms. Steen to the party without telling her so that she can be surprised.

(1) without prep. “没有;不(做某事)”
其后跟v-ing、人称代词宾格或名词,用来表示伴随或假设的情况。
He left the room without saying a word.

(2) so that “以便;为的是”
引导目的状语从句
I study hard every day so that I can catch up with my classmates.
为了能赶上我的同学,我每天努力学习。
Speak loudly so that everyone can hear you
clearly.
大声点儿说,以便大家都能听清楚你的话。
so …that “如此……以至于……”
引导结果状语从句
The film is so educational that we want to see it again.
这部电影很有教育意义,我们想再看一遍。
The girl is so cute that we all like her so much.
这个女孩如此可爱, 我们都很喜欢她。
拓展:
当so that 从句的主语和主句的主语一致时,可用in order to 或不定式短语替换从句的开始部分,其意义基本不变。
他们早起以便能够赶上第一班公交车。
They got up early so that they could catch the first bus.
→They got up early in order to catch the first bus.
→They got up early to catch the first bus.
(3) surprised adj. “感到意外的;惊奇的”
be surprised to do sth.
对做某事感到意外
be surprised at sth.
对某事感到惊讶
be surprised that从句
因…..而惊讶
1. She is surprised to receive his invitation.
收到他的请柬她感到很意外。
2. We were surprised at the news.
我们听到这个消息后大感意外。
3. I’m really surprised that you remember
my birthday.
我真的很吃惊你竟记得我的生日。
【拓展】surprising adj. “令人惊讶的;出人意料的”常用来说明或修饰事物

【例】The news is surprising.
这则消息令人吃惊。
We got some very surprising results.
我们得到了一些非常出人意料的结果。

【拓展】surprise n. “惊奇;惊讶”
v. “使吃惊”
【例】The result is a big surprise.

The ending of the story really surprised me.

短语:to one’s surprise “使某人惊讶的是”
in /with surprise “惊讶地”
give sb. a surprise “给某人一个惊喜”
【例】To my surprise, she gave him her

我期盼收到你们所有人的答复。
(1) look forward to “期待;盼望”
注意: 这里的to为介词,后接名词、代词或v-ing
The students are looking forward to an English party.
学生们正在盼望着(举办)一个英语聚会。
区别:look forward to 和 expect 都可意为“期待”
? look forward to指带着愉快的心情期待着某事的发生
The students are looking forward to their holiday.

学生们盼望着他们的假期。
?expect指确信某事必将发生,多用于好的事物,也可用于不好的事物。
I didn't expect to meet you here.
我没有预料到会在这儿遇到你。
forward adv. “向前地”,修饰动词,在句中作状语。
The seats face forward.
这些座位面朝前方。
She hurried forward to meet him.
她急忙走上前去迎接他。

(2)hear from 收到某人的来信其后接人名或表示人的代词,意为“ 收到某人的来信”, 相
当于receive/get a letter from sb.。
We often hear from him.
我们经常收到他的来信。
hear from本身有“信件”的意思,不能再接letter。
hear of=hear about 听说
I heard of the story.
我听说过这个故事。
8. Hope you can make it!
make it 是一个在口语中使用频率较高的习语,具有较强的交际功能。
?在约定时间内赶到(相当于arrive in time)
If we run, we should make it.
我们如果跑的话,应该来得及。
?办成某事(相当于succeed)
After years of hard work, he finally made it.
多年的辛勤劳动后,他终于成功了。
