Module 4 单元加餐练
Ⅰ.阅读理解
Have you ever been sad because of failure? Please remember, for quite often achieving what you set out to do is not the most important thing.
A boy decided to dig a deep hole behind his house. As he was working, a couple of older boys stopped by to watch.“What are you doing?” asked one of the visitors.“I want to dig a hole all the way through the earth!” the boy answered excitedly. The older boys began to laugh, telling him that digging a hole all the way through the earth was impossible. After a while, the boy picked up a jar. He showed it to the visitors. It was full of all kinds of stones and insects. Then he said calmly and confidently,“Maybe I can't finish digging all the way through the earth, but look at what I've found during this period!”
The boy's goal was far too difficult, but it did cause him to go on. And that is what a goal is for — to cause us to move in the direction we have chosen, in other words, to cause us to keep working!
Not every goal will be fully achieved. Not every job will end up with a success. Not every dream will come true. But when you fall short of your aim, maybe you can say,“Yes, but look at what I've found along the way! There are so many wonderful things having come into my life because I tried to do something!” It is in the digging that life is lived. It is the unexpected joy on the journey that really makes sense.

A
Vincent Van Gogh, for whom colour was the main symbol of expression, was born in Groot-Zundert, Holland in 1853. He was brought up in a cultured family. Vincent was highly emotional and wasn't self?confident. Between 1860 and 1880, when he finally decided to become an artist, Van Gogh had two unhappy love stories and worked unsuccessfully in Belgium. He remained there to study art, and decided to give happiness by creating beauty. Of the works of his early Dutch period, the most famous is The Potato Eaters.
In 1886 he went to Paris to join his brother Theo, the manager of Goupil's gallery. In Paris, Van Gogh studied with Cormon, later met Pissarro, Monet, and Gauguin, and began to lighten his very dark palette (调色板). His nervousness made him a difficult person to get along with and night-long discussions and painting all day undermined his health. He decided to go south to Arles where he hoped his friends would join him and help to set up a school of art. Gauguin did join him but with bad results. Near the end of 1888, Van Gogh ran after Gauguin with an open razor (剃须刀) but ended up cutting a part of his own ear off. It led Gauguin to finally leave Arles.
In the May of 1890, Van Gogh seemed much better and went to live in Auvers-sur-Oise under the eye of Dr. Gachet. Two months later he was dead, having shot himself “for the good of all”. During his life he had sold one painting. Van Gogh's finest works were produced in less than three years.

At times my mom has been uncomfortable seeing these qualities in me. For example, when I was 12, I went to Puerto Rico all by myself to stay with my grandmother for the summer. My mom was extremely nervous about it. She kept telling me how things were different in Puerto Rico, to always put on sunscreen, not to wander away from my grandmother, and other warnings. She helped me pack and did not leave the airport until she saw my plane take off.
But despite her worries, she let me go on my own. As I moved into my teens, she continued to give me space to grow and learn, even when it might have been difficult for her. When I reached my senior year, I decided to move away for college. Once again I found that I differed from my peers: While many of them wanted to stay close to home, I couldn't wait to be out in the world on my own. While my mom may not have been happy at the thought of my going away, she was supportive and excited for me.
One big thing I realized during my senior year, as my mom granted me more freedom, was that she actually believes in me and trusts me. That means a lot. Most of my life, and especially when I was little, the main person I tried to impress in my schoolwork or other things was my mother. I knew she expected nothing but the best from me. Sometimes it was hard to live up to her standards; getting a single B on my report card would make me feel bad because I knew she wanted me to have all A's.
I know that her high standards have helped me stay focused on what's important, like education, and made me who I am. I am thankful for her support and involvement in my life. Most of all I respect her. She is the strongest woman I know and that's why I have turned out so strong and independent.

6.We can learn from the third paragraph that the author's mother________.

Do you love Beats headphones, True Religion jeans, and UGG shoes? These are some of the most popular brands (牌子) around. They are also expensive. But some experts say they are not much better than cheaper brands.
For example, Jim Wilcox works for Consumer Reports. He tested all kinds of headphones. He says that D|S80 Koss Pro headphones provide basically the same quality and comfort as Beats. So why do people pay twice or even 10 times as much for the hottest brands?
Experts say it's because fashionable, expensive brands send a message. Brands say “I belong” or “I can afford it”.
Some people think that expensive brand names are worth the price. They say that some designer clothes really are top quality and that they last longer than cheaper brands. Some teenagers choose to wear popular brands because these brands make them feel good about themselves.
Alexandra Allam, 17, likes to buy brand?name products.“I'd rather spend the extra money to get something I know I'll be satisfied with,” she says. Her friend Emmy Swan agrees, saying “As long as you can afford it, it seems reasonable to buy what you want.” But not all teenagers agree.“Spending hundreds of dollars for designer sunglasses is stupid and unreasonable,” says Daniel Steinbrecher, 16.“It's fake (假的) happiness.”
People who are against wearing expensive brand names say that many designer brands aren't any better.“It's wasteful to buy things just because they are popular,” says Edmund Williams, 15.“You'll feel better if you buy things because you like them. If you have extra money to spend, it would be better to give it to people in need.”
语篇解读:文章讨论的是昂贵品牌值不值得的问题。
8.The example of Jim's report wants to tell us ________.

He says that D|S80 Koss Pro headphones provide basically the same quality and comfort as Beats.” Jim Wilcox为消费者报告。他测试了各种耳机。他说,80美元的耳机Koss Pro和Beats提供基本相同的质量和舒适。由此可知消费者们对于品牌了解不够,lesser-known brands may offer the same quality as name brands 一些鲜为人知的品牌可以像品牌商品一样提供相同质量的。故选D。
9.According to experts, people choose the hottest brands probably ________.
A.to show off
B.for their better quality
C.for their better designs
D.to belong to a special group
解析:选A 推理判断题。根据第三段的“Brands say ‘I belong’ or ‘I can afford it’.”可知,人们选择最热门的品牌是出于炫耀心理,故选A。
10.What does Edmund think of expensive brands?
A.They are not worth the price.
B.They make him feel confident.
C.They need to improve their quality.
D.They pay too much attention to personal likes.
解析:选A 推理判断题。根据最后一段Edmund所说的“It's wasteful to buy things just because they are popular.”仅仅因为它们受欢迎而买东西是一种浪费。可知他认为昂贵品牌并不值那个价,故选A。
11.The text is mainly about ________.
A.how to buy things reasonably
B.the competition between brands
C.the different values of teenagers
D.whether expensive brands are worth high prices

Sunday, 31 August
We've been in China for a month now. Dad, Mom, Harry and I moved to Tianjin on 25 August. We're not very far from Beijing. Two days ago, we celebrated my 16th birthday. It was great celebrating in China; the only thing that was strange was the cake — here they're not as sweet as the ones in New York. On Monday school starts — I wonder what it will be like.
Monday, 1 September
On my first day I was looking around for a locker to put my books in. However, here all the students keep all of their books at their desks — we stay in the same classroom because apparently we don't have to go from class to class — teachers come to us!
Today we selected teacher assistants for each subject.Their duties are to collect homework, make announcements, and do other stuff for the teacher and the students. It's kind of a big deal here! Since I am from the US, I was asked to be the English assistant. I felt so proud but quite nervous at the same time because I wasn't sure what I had to do, but I accepted the job anyway.
Friday, 3 October
Boy, what a week! Now we have nine classes every day, including the morning class, a combination of our American schools'“Homeroom”and“Study Hall”. I think Chinese students work too much! I have to do my homework when I get back home. I don't even have time to watch TV or surf the Internet like before. I sometimes miss New York and my school because we didn't have to study so much. We had more time to hang out with our classmates and neighbors; here, besides their usual classes, students are involved in weekend classes in subjects such as English, Chinese and math.
I get a lot of attention, being from another country. Everyone wants to practice English with me! A really cute girl even asked me for my phone number on my second day and sent me a text message! I'm making a lot more friends now. I just need a lot of help to improve my Chinese. Some students want to do a language exchange program with me. Nice!

12.The passage mentions all the following points EXCEPT ________.

Why Do People Like Traditional Chinese Painting?
Most people agree that the traditional Chinese painting is very beautiful. First, the Chinese painting is known for its brush drawings in black inks and natural colours. Traditional Chinese painting styles are closer to reality and easier to understand while most western modern paintings are too strange to be understood. Besides, there are many famous traditional Chinese painters, one of whom is Qi Baishi. His paintings of little shrimps are loved by many people.
Another China's best known artist is Xu Beihong. He also follows the traditional Chinese style. He is most famous for his lively paintings of horses, which look so alive. What's more, an important feature of traditional Chinese paintings is the perfect coordination of pictures, poems, calligraphy and seals. This also adds beauty to the paintings.
So most people like traditional Chinese paintings.

Two newspapers that revealed government secrets about spying by the National Security Agency — The Washington Post and The Guardian — will share the Pulitzer Prize for public service, announced Monday.
The Pulitzers are the best known and most honorable awards for the arts and journalism in the U.S. The Washington Post and Guardian stories were based on thousands of documents handed over by NSA leaker Edward Snowden. American and British lawmakers criticized the newspapers for revealing government secrets, but the Pulitzer judges, mostly journalists, praised what they called “authoritative and insightful reports that helped the public understand how the revealing fits into the larger system of national security.”
The Pulitzer for fiction goes to Donna Tartt for her best-selling novel The Goldfinch. The Pulitzer judges called Tartt's The Goldfinch “a beautifully written coming?of?age novel that touches the heart”. It follows a sad boy's involvement with a famous painting which he takes from the Metropolitan Museum of Art after a terrorist bombing. USA TODAY named it one of our 10 favorite books of 2013. In a 4?star review for USA TODAY, Kevin Nance called the novel a “very entertaining, darkly funny new book, that goes a long way toward explaining why its author is finally securing her place alongside the greatest American novelists of the past half?century, including John_Updike,_Philip_Roth,_Toni_Morrison_and_that_other_latter?day_Dickensian,_John_Irvine.”
The annual prizes, begun in 1917, are named for publisher Joseph Pulitzer and are administered by Columbia University in New York City. In 20 of the categories, each winner receives D|S10,000. The winner for public service in journalism is awarded a gold medal.

In choosing a friend, one should be very careful. A good friend can help you study. You can have fun together and make each other happy. Sometimes you will meet fair?weather friends, who will be with you as long as you have money or luck, but when you are down, they will run away. How do I know when I have found a good friend? I look for certain qualities (品质) of character, especially understanding, honesty and reliability (可靠).
Above all else, I look for understanding in a friend. A good friend tries to understand how another person is feeling. He is not quick to judge. Instead, he tries to learn from others. He puts himself in the other person's place, and he tries to think of ways to be helpful. He is also a good listener.
At the same time, however, a good friend is honest. He does not look for faults (过错) in others. He notices their good points. In short, a friend will try to understand me and accept me.
Another quality of a friend is reliability. I can always depend on (信赖) a good friend. If he tells me he will meet me somewhere at a certain time, I can be sure that he will be there. If I need a favor, he will do his best to help me. If I am in trouble, he will not run away from me.
There is a fourth quality that makes a friend special. A special friend is someone with whom we can have fun. We should enjoy our lives, and we would enjoy our friendship. That is why I especially like friends who are fun to be with. A good friend likes the same things I like. We share experience (经验) and learn from each other. A good friend has a good sense of humor (幽默), too. He likes to laugh with me. That is how we share in the joy of being friends. And I know that he is looking for the same quality in me.

Michael J.“Crocodile Dundee”(also called Mick), played by Paul Hogan, is the main character in the fictional Crocodile Dundee film series consisting of Crocodile Dundee, Crocodile Dundee Ⅱ, and Crocodile Dundee in Los Angeles. The character is a crocodile hunter, hence the nickname.
In the first film, Crocodile Dundee, Mick is visited by a New York reporter, Sue Charlton, who travels to Australia to investigate a report she heard of a crocodile hunter, who had his leg bitten off by a crocodile in the outback. The hunter supposedly walked more than a hundred miles back to civilization and miraculously survived his injuries. However, by the time she meets him, the story turns out to be a somewhat exaggerated legend where the “bitten-off leg” turns out to be just being some bad scarring on his leg; a “love bite” as Mick calls it. Still interested by the idea of“Crocodile Dundee”, Sue continues with the story. They travel together out to where the incident occurred, and follow his route through the bush to the nearest hospital. Despite his old?fashioned views, the pair eventually become close, especially after Mick saves Sue from a crocodile attack.
Feeling there is still more to the story, Sue invites Mick back to New York with her, as his first trip to a city (or “first trip anywhere” as Dundee says). The rest of the film depicts Dundee as a “fish out of water” showing how, despite his expert knowledge of living outdoors, he knows little of city life. Mick meets Sue's boyfriend, Richard, but they do not get along. By the end of the film, Mick is on his way home, lovesick, when Sue realizes she loves Mick, too, and not Richard. She runs to the subway station to stop Mick from leaving and, by passing on messages through the packed?to?the?gills crowd, she tells him she won't marry Richard, and she loves him instead. With the help of the other people in the subway, Mick and Sue have a loving reunion as the film ends.

I was never very neat, while my roommate Kate was extremely organized. Each of her objects had its place, but mine always hid somewhere. She even labeled (贴标签) everything. I always looked for everything. Over time, Kate got neater and I got messier. She would push my dirty clothing over, and I would lay my books on her tidy desk. We both got tired of each other.
War broke out one evening. Kate came into the room. Soon, I heard her screaming, “Take your shoes away! Why under my bed!” Deafened, I saw my shoes flying at me. I jumped to my feet and started yelling. She yelled back louder.
The room was filled with anger. We could not have stayed together for a single minute without a phone call. Kate answered it. From her end of the conversation, I could tell right away her grandma was seriously ill. When she hung up, she quickly crawled (爬) under her covers, weeping. Obviously, that was something she should not go through alone. All of a sudden, a warm feeling of sympathy rose up in my heart.
Slowly, I collected the pencils, took back the books, made my bed, cleaned the socks and swept the floor, even on her side. I got so into my work that I even didn't noticed Kate had sat up. She was watching, her tears dried and her expression one of disbelief. Then, she reached out her hands to grasp mine. I looked up into her eyes. She smiled at me.“Thanks.”
Kate and I stayed roommates for the rest of the year. We didn't always agree, but we learned the key to living together: giving in, cleaning up and holding on.

A Christmas Carol was written by Charles Dickens. The first 6,000 copies of the book were sold out in a week. And the book has inspired many plays and movies. The first play was put on in 1844. The first two movies were silent films made in 1901 and 1908. Since then, the story has been remade more than 60 times for television and cinema.
What makes such a tale so appealing? Audiences have always loved a good plot, a villain (反面人物) who harms other people or breaks the law, and the ending of right over wrong. The book offers all three.
The book tells the story of a man named Ebenezer Scrooge. He is mean and cruel to his clerk and turns away his only living relative. One night, Scrooge is visited by three spirits. The first reveals scenes from Scrooge's youth that led to this current state. The second takes him to the homes of his clerk and his nephew. Here Scrooge sees that people can be happy without lots of money. The spirit also shows him the desperate poor people of London. The final spirit shows Scrooge will die alone, and no one will care if he continues to live as he has. At last the message is understood, and Scrooge_repents. He becomes generous and caring to all around him, especially to his clerk's sick son, Tiny Tim.
Every year, thousands of people watch A Christmas Carol again. Why? They may be touched by its lessons on the true meanings of wealth and happiness. They may enjoy the special effects and feelings or watching every year may be just a habit. Viewers never seem to grow tired of the old miser, Scrooge, and his dramatic message of hope and change.

Can dogs and cats get along well in the same home? People who are thinking about getting a dog as a friend for their cat are worried that they will fight. A recent research has found that if the cat is taken back home before the dog, and if they are introduced when still young (less than 6 months for cats, a year for dogs), it is highly probable that the two pets will get along swimmingly. In two?thirds of the homes cats and dogs have a good relationship.
However, it wasn't all sweetness and light. There was a reported coldness between the cat and dog in 25% of the homes, while aggression(侵略,好斗) and fighting were found in 10% of the homes. One reason for this is probably that some of their body languages are just different. For example, when a cat turns its head away it means aggression, while a dog doing the same means submission (顺从).
In homes with cats and dogs living peacefully, researchers observed a surprising behavior. They are learning how to talk each other's language. It is a surprise that cats can learn how to talk “Dog”, and dogs can learn how to talk “Cat”.
What's interesting is that both cats and dogs have appeared to become smarter. They can learn to read each other's body languages, suggesting that the two may have more in common than was previously expected. Once familiar with each other's body language, cats and dogs can play together, and enjoy sleeping together on the sofa.
The importance of this research on cats and dogs may go beyond pets — to people who don't get along well, including neighbors, colleagues at work, and even countries. If cats and dogs can learn to get along, surely people have a good chance.
