Module 5 单元加餐练
Ⅰ.阅读理解
Hundreds of years ago, news was carried from place to place by people on foot or by horse. It took days, weeks and sometimes months for people to receive news. Now it is possible to send words and pictures around the world in seconds. Billions of people learn about news stories of their own country and all over the world every day, either by watching TV or reading newspapers.
Newspapers have been an important part of everyday life since the 18th century. Many countries have hundreds of different newspapers. How do newspaper editors decide which news stories to print? Why do they print some stories and not others? What makes a good newspaper story?
Firstly, it is important to report news stories. TV stations can report news much faster than newspapers. Yet, newspapers give more about the same story. They may also look at the story in another way, or they may print completely different stories to those on TV.
Secondly, a news story has to be interesting and unusual. People don't want to read stories about everyday life. As a result, many stories are about some kind of danger and seem to be “bad” news. For example, newspapers never print stories about planes landing safely; instead they print stories about plane accidents.
Another factor (因素) is also very important in many news stories. Many people are interested in news in foreign countries, but more prefer to read stories about people, places and events in their own country. So the stories on the front page in Chinese newspapers are usually very different from the ones in British, French and American newspapers.

Weekends are normally a time for shopping and last Saturday was no exception. My son Henry and I were shopping in a neighborhood market. Henry was busy weighing each new bag of vegetables I selected. I gave him a bag of potatoes and he walked over to the scale and waited in line. Suddenly, a man rushed over from behind, and stepped before him, hitting him out of the way. Henry looked shocked and scared. Seeing this I left my shopping cart and walked over to Henry, saying loudly, “Are you OK, honey? I saw what that man did to you. That was very, very wrong.”
When the man finished weighing his bag, his sudden turning around made all his onions fall to the ground. The three of us stood there, frozen for a moment. And then I bent down on my hands and knees and started collecting onions. After I handed the onions to the man, he accepted them and put them into his bag. After Henry and I picked up all the onions, the man walked away without saying anything. We didn't discuss the event until we got back in the car.
On the way back home, Henry said through tears, “Mommy, I've a frustrating day. That man cut right in front of me. And we had to help him pick up his onions! Why did we do that? That didn't make any sense!”
I took a deep breath and said, “Henry, that man seemed to have a very bad mood today. We should forgive him. I was also angry with the man for treating you rudely. I really wanted to kick him. But doing that doesn't make any sense. If we hadn't helped him, we might have felt good for a moment, but then I bet we would have felt really sorry for a long time. You and I have a lot of love to share. Maybe that man doesn't have much. People who behave badly still need love.”
A cheerful smile appeared on Henry's face. It was a smile of promise kept. It was the best smile I had ever seen. It was a good moment. It may have been my best mommy moment ever.

If Confucius (孔子) were alive today and could celebrate his September 28 birthday with a big cake, there would be a lot of candles. He'd need a fan or a strong wind to help him put them out.
While many people in China remember Confucius on his special day, few people in the United States will give him a passing thought. It's nothing personal. Most Americans don't even remember the birthdays of their own national heroes.
But that doesn't mean that Americans don't care about Confucius. In many ways he has become a bridge that foreigners must cross if they want to reach a deeper understanding of China.
In the past two decades, the Chinese studies programs have gained huge popularity in Western universities. More recently, the Chinese government has set up Confucius Institutes in more than 80 countries. These schools teach both Chinese language and culture. The main courses of Chinese culture usually include Chinese art, history and philosophy (哲学). Some social scientists suggest that Westerners should take advantage of the ancient Chinese wisdom to make up the drawbacks of Western philosophy. Students in the United States, at the same time, are racing to learn Chinese. So they will be ready for life in a world where China is an equal power with the United States. Businessmen who hope to make money in China are reading books about Confucius to understand their Chinese customers.
So the old thinker's ideas are still alive and well.
Today China attracts the West more than ever, and it will need more to introduce Confucius and Chinese culture to the West.
As for the old thinker, he will not be forgotten by people in the West, even if his birthday is.

Magazines have been around for many years. The actual history of magazines can date back to the newspaper industry. The newspaper industry wanted to do more indepth articles and articles that needed much more research. From time to time, the larger newspapers included weekly insert sections (插入版块) that were smaller. These inserts would include longer stories, indepth interviews, and of course, photographs. It was in these inserts that the first magazines were born.
Of course, this was an idea that soon took off. The readers loved having these small inserts which were convenient for them to take and read when they were free. As time went by, people became more interested in the world around them. Magazines began to realize that they would benefit (受益) from being specialized. For example, as voting numbers grew in the United States, magazines that were only about election news and politics began to come out. Nowadays, magazines can be found on many different topics. Schools put out magazines for various reasons, so do companies and businesses. The industry has completely grown and succeeded.
The other side of the magazine industry is known as gossip magazines. These are magazines that focus on the people that are well-known. These magazines sometimes contain correct information about their private lives, and sometimes contain information that doesn't come from facts.
All in all, magazines work together to fill an important position. Unlike non-fiction books that can take months to be put out into the market, and unlike newspapers that need to be put out each day, magazines are put out each week, every two weeks, each month, or in longer periods. This means that they can still put out news that is fresh, but that their reporters can take the time that they need to provide their readers with well written stories.

The Internet, together with laptops (笔记本电脑) and cellphones, makes it possible that almost everyone can at any time and in almost any place get some news for free or for few fees.
You'll browse the computer newspapers or magazines just like switching on TV. An electronic voice will tell you stories about the latest events. You'll even get to choose the kind of voice you want to hear. Want more information on the brief story? A simple touch makes the entire text appear.
There are the predictions (预言) from experts working on the newspapers of the future. Pictured as part of home?based media and entertainment systems, computer newspapers and magazines would unite printed and broadcast news, offering information and analyzing (分析) video images of news events.
The continuing loss of readers will result in a small number of advertisements in newspapers. It makes no sense to spend millions of dollars to print ads.
With the development of technology, more and more electronic medium have been created until now, but replacing the traditional newspapers and magazines has a long way to go, because the resistance to computer newspapers and magazines from journalism (新闻业) may be much stronger. Don't be surprised if you see a group of people dancing or shouting on the square. They are a flash mob (快闪族). Confused by their name? Actually, a flash mob, organized with the help of the Internet or other digital communications networks, is a group of people who gather suddenly in a public place, do something unusual for a period of time, such as exchanging books, coming together to look at the sky, waving their hands and shouting something at the top of their lungs for 30 seconds, and then quickly disappear before the police can arrive.
Bill Wasik, senior editor of Harper's Magazine, organized the first flash mob in Manhattan in May 2003 and the first successful flash mob gathered on June 3, 2003 at Macy's department store involving 100 people gathering on Macy's Department Store. Following this, about 200 people flooded the lobby of the Hyatt hotel, applauding in one voice for fifteen seconds, and next participants pretending to be tourists on a trip invaded a shoe shop in Soho. A later mob saw hundreds of people in Central Park making bird noises.
Wasik claimed that he created flash mobs as a social experiment designed to tease hipsters (追逐时尚的人), and highlight the cultural atmosphere of agreement and of being part of “the next big thing”. Many web logs, chat rooms and Web groups are devoted to the craze. Though flash mobs were originally regarded as useless, the concept has already developed for the benefit of political and social events. Flash mobbing takes advantage of the efficiency of communicating information on Websites and by email, and protesters can similarly use the “on and off” concept to be involved in political events. Such flash mob gatherings can sometimes shock or frighten people who are not aware of what is taking place. They also have enormous economic potential, such as using flash mobs to advertise a product.
The flash mob is now becoming more and more popular. People use it to do many things. For example, in 2009, hundreds of Michael Jackson's fans took part in a flash mob to remember him, gathering outside the railway station in Liverpool, singing and dancing Michael's famous song, beat it together. In another example, some people took part in a flash mob to warn people against negative words. Flash mobs give people from all walks of life an opportunity to come together to create a memory.

I became a teacher at 55 years of age. Things were going on so well during my first two periods. Then came my 3rd period class — the 8th graders with only one girl in the class. I thought the class was bad until the intercom (内部通话系统) came on and the office was asking if I was in my classroom. “Of course,” I responded. A student who knew he was going to be late for class had informed the office I was not in my classroom — 10 minutes after class began.
When the student came in and I walked over to greet him, he said, “Don't touch me.” He then put his head on his desk and did not seem to listen to a word I said. I did not confront (使面对) him with the “lie” to the office.
The next day he came into class on time. This time instead of listening or following instructions on keyboarding software, he played Internet games. I walked over to him. He looked at me ready to snap back (没好气地顶撞) at anything I said. I asked him, “Where did you learn to use a computer like that?” he looked at me surprised. I repeated, “You are really good at that. Where did you learn so much?” He began to tell me his father “used to” buy him games to play, but not anymore. I could feel the pain.
Instead of blaming him for being off task, I surprised him and praised him for his skills. Then, I asked him to show me what he could do in our software. He was amazed.
On a Friday night at a high school football game, I really got my breakthrough (突破). From about five feet away, in front of his friends he came over to me and gave me a big hug saying, “Hi, Ms. Marie.” We talked for a while and before he walked away, he had hugged me two more times. This was a long way from “don't touch me” on that first day.

NEWSPAPERS have certainly been around for a long time. Many New Zealand newspapers are now heading towards their 125th anniversary (周年纪念) of the first publication and some New Zealand papers are more than 140 years old.
However, some people think that newspapers are yesterday's medium (传媒) and that new media, like television and even the Internet, will in the very near future cause newspapers to die. What is clear is that the growth of new media, and in particular the Internet, will cause newspapers to change themselves and change their product to meet customers' needs.
People read newspapers because of their unique (独特的) strength. They_have_a_large_audience_and_yet_a_certain_appeal_(吸引力). They reach the majority of the population each day through covering national and international news and yet they offer interest to gardeners, cooks and even slaves to fashion.
Newspapers also remain strong because of people's continued love of reading. Reading is an active and involving (专注的) process, but people are able to read at their own speed and return to newspapers for reference purposes.
Newspapers will certainly not stop the Internet being a competitor (竞争者). But no newly-introduced news medium has ever killed an old one, and if best guesses are to be made then it is likely that this will be the case with this new medium as well.

There are many useful suggestions that can help one to improve English. Here are some of them to increase one's English language vocabulary.
Learning English vocabulary is about much more than just learning the right words. It is based on understanding important words and expressions.
Learning a word will not help very much if you quickly forget it. Researches show that it takes from 10 to 20 repetitions (重复) to really make a word part of your vocabulary. Since most words are learned from how they are used in context (上下文), the more words one is shown, the better vocabulary one will have. Keep a piece of paper close to you. When you read, pay close attention to the word you do not know, write the word down and try to understand its meaning from the context. Then look up the word in a dictionary.
Remember that if you do not use English words that you have just learned in conversation or writing, you will forget them very quickly. So the best way to learn new words effectively is just by trying to use them in conversation and writing. Remember also that practice is the key to fluent spoken English.

Mass media are tools of commun-
ication.Mass media allow us to record and pass information rapidly to a large, scattered (分散的) audience. They extend our ability to communicate with each other by helping us overcome barriers caused by time and space.
There are various ways in which mass media make daily life easy for us. First, they inform and help us keep a watch on our world. They gather and pass on information we would be unlikely or unable to get on our own.
Second, mass media help us to arrange time and life. What we talk about and what we think about are greatly influenced by the media. When people get together, they tend to talk about certain happenings in the newspapers or on TV. Because we are exposed to different points of view through different kinds of media every day, we are able to evaluate (评价) all sides of a certain issue.
Third, the media are used to persuade people. A good example is advertisements through the media. Newspapers, magazines and TV are filled with all kinds of colorful, persuasive (说服的) advertisements. Though many advertisements may not say openly that they want you to buy a certain product, they describe their products in such a way that you may want to buy them.
Fourth, the media also entertain. All of the media make some efforts to entertain their audience. For instance, even though the newspaper is primarily a medium of information, it also contains entertainment features. Television, motion pictures, fiction books and some radio stations and magazines are devoted mainly to entertainment. People often ask me how I became successful in that six?year period of time while many of the people I knew did not. The answer is simple: The things I found to be easy to do, but they found to be easy not to do.
I found it easy to set the goals that could change my life. They found it easy not to. I found it easy to read the books that could affect my thinking. They found that easy not to. I found it easy to attend the classes. They said it probably really wouldn't matter. Six years later, I'm a millionaire and they are all still blaming the economy, the government and company policies. They neglected (忽视) to do the basic, easy things.
In fact, the primary reason most people are not doing can be summed up in a single word: neglect. It is not the lack of money — banks are full of money. It is not the lack of opportunity — the government continues to offer the most opportunities. It is not the lack of books — libraries are full of books and they are free! It is not the schools — the classrooms are full of good teachers. We have plenty of good advisors. The major reason that so few take advantage of all that we have is neglect.
Don't do the things which cause us to feel guilty (感到内疚的) and guilt erodes our self?confidence. As our self?confidence reduces, so does the level of our activity. And as our activity goes down, so do our results. And as our results suffer, our attitude begins to weaken. And as our attitude begins changing from positive to negative, our self?confidence becomes even less ... and on and on it goes.
So my suggestion is that when giving choice of “easy to” and “easy not to”, do not neglect to do the simple, basic, “easy” but potentially life?changing activities.

The summer vacation is just around the corner and many parents and children are looking forward to the months when alarm clocks don't sound in the early morning, bed times are pushed back a bit in the evening, and schedules relax in between. For many families, it is meaningful to participate in some summer camps. Consider the following seven tips to help you make the most of your experience.
__1__
If your child plays sports or dances throughout the school year, why not explore other opportunities in the summer months? Maybe your son has an interest in science that he'd like to investigate beyond the classroom. Perhaps your daughter has an interest in nature she'd like to explore.
Put the friend system into action.
Inquire if other parents (neighbors, parents of your child's friends) would be interested in having their child participate in the same camp. Having a friend take part in the camp can make the adjustment easier, and parents can share a car together.
Don't be surprised by additional fees.
__2__ In addition to registration fees, are there equipment fees, snack fees, or other expenses for which you'll be responsible?
Check the weather forecast.
__3__ Fast-forward to three months and possibly add 20 degrees to the temperature. Will your child enjoy running the soccer field under the hot August sun? Perhaps an indoor camp during the late summer months might work better.
Prepare for outdoor activities.
Apply sunscreen before camp begins. Provide your child with a large water bottle and a healthy snack.__4__ Ask camp counselors or assistants how many breaks are permitted.
Arrive early to observe.
Pick a day to arrive early or stay a few minutes late so you can see the camp in action. Doing so gives you hands-on observation as to how the camp is organized.
__5__
Don't view day camp as simply a summer babysitting service. Ask your child about his or her day. Engage in a conversation about what activities they did.
A.If permitted, have your child wear a hat or sunglasses.
B.Be aware of the starting and ending times of the camp.
C.Show interest.
D.Town recreation departments, local schools, and churches are just some of the many places where you can find a variety of activities to fit your child's interests.
E.Use the summer to discover different interests.
F.When you are doing your camp research in May, an outdoor soccer clinic in August sounds great.
G.Know the entire cost of the camp before signing up.
